Book Description
1928. Bernays, regarded by many as the father of public relations, has compiled a collection of essays that place in the hands of the youth of this country information concerning all phases of professional and industrial life, so that they may choose their careers with a broad as well as detailed understanding of what each branch of activity may hold in store for them. The authors have tried to present such accurate information that the young men and women who read this book will be impelled to select their occupation on a basis of its suitability to them, in terms of scholastic training, length of the apprenticeship, personal predilections, and opportunities for monetary and honorary rewards. A partial list of the Contributors includes: A.C. Ernst on Accountancy; John Hays Hammond on Engineering; Julius Henry Cohen on Law; Edward Walter Eberle on Military-Navy; Jesse L. Lasky on Motion Pictures; Edward L. Bernays on Public Relations; Vernon Kellogg on Scientific Research; and Mary Roberts Rinehart on Writing.
Book Description
This volume examines higher education's apparent overreliance on policy and shows how we can redirect our attention to the ethical and developmental issues that underlie the undergraduate experience. Authors discuss how learning communities and creeds can help achieve balance between policy and personal responsibility; how to deal with student misconduct in a way that both reduces the risk of litigation and furthers student development; and how to promote multiculturalism without compromising individual rights and freedoms. This is the 82nd issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Student Services.

A lot of fun along the way.......2001-06-14
Ms Patron has written a terrific book. "Learning" is supposed to be work. She has made it fun. Bible stories are serious stuff, but not in her book. Nothing but laughs and cute turns in the story lines. Prospective readers will be relieved to know that understanding the stories does not require having read the Bible. But having seen the movie versions would be helpful. As in the movies, sex has a central role in each story. It's a quick read and a lot of fun along the way.
I laughed all the way to the temple.......2001-02-28
It's not that Rachel Patron doesn't respect the Bible. Only someone with deep knowledge of the power of the patriarchs could have this much fun with their stories. Who knew how Moses felt about that flimsy reed boat, what happened at Samson's bachelor party, and of course, whether or not sex is good for the Jews? I heartily recommend this for Buddhists, Baptists, and everyone in between.

Book Description
In the fall of 1969, the story seemed to come out of nowhere. Was Beatle Paul McCartney dead? This was no ordinary death rumor. It was believed that McCartney had died years earlier and been replaced by a lookalike. What's more, the surviving Beatles were thought to have planted "clues" to his death on their record albums. "Paul-Is-Dead" mania swept the United States as people attempted to solve the riddle of Paul's alleged demise. How did all of this happen? Beatles scholar and journalist Andru J Reeve has gotten to the bottom of this intrigue. After years of research, Reeve has assembled TURN ME ON, DEAD MAN to tell the strangest tale ever in the history of rock 'n' roll.

Some good facts and recollections in this.......2007-05-17
This was an entertaining recount of the "Paul is Dead" rumor that spread like wildfire in the late 60's and still persists to a certain degree to this very day.
The biggest fault this book has is, while it does contain lots of great info and recollections on the subject, the author does not even for one second even entertain the idea that The Beatles intentionally perpetrated the rumor. He more or less just looks at it as an urban legend started by over imaginative acid taking pot smoking hippies that snowballed once a few self serving radio disc jockeys and journalism students got a hold of it. He totally discounts and laughs off, not only the idea that "Paul is Dead", but also that the Beatles were in on the whole thing. Reeve even lists most of the hints and clues that appeared on Beatles records and goes out of his way to discount them, more often than not in a very illogical and unconvincing way. The funny thing is one of the biggest hints that people fed off of is easy to discount and the writer (or anybody else) does not even attempt to debunk it. The one I am referring to is that people were saying the Walrus was considered a death omen in Viking times in Scandinavia. I have to tell you all I have studied Viking history and read Norse and Icelandic sagas obsessively studying Norse Pagan beliefs for years. I am an Odinist. I have even lived in Scandinavia for the past few years and I am married to a Danish woman. The belief that the Walrus was or is a death omen has never once surfaced in any of my studies of the past or in my day to day life here.
As conspiratorial minded as I am I think that its very, very unlikely McCartney died and was replaced by a doppleganger but I do believe that the band was in on the whole thing. There were just too many hints and clues that they put into their lyrics, music and the art of their albums for it to be an accident.
Great Hoax.......2007-01-23
I absolutely loved this book until about half way when it lost a lot of steam. The beginning was packed with information that I had never heard, it even reminded me of things that I had forgotten. Despite knowing that it all was a hoax you still were able to get that eerie felling, kudos to the author.. the first half is worth the read, save your time on the second half.
Decent sociohistorical study of odd phenomenon.......2006-04-09
This is actually a revamped version of a great book by Reeve originally released in the early 90s by Popular Culture, Ink. Thus some of the interviews, text and photos are from the late 80s, when Reeve was doing the meat of his research. It should be stated straight off that the intent of this book is not as a clue-finder. Clues are listed through out the text, and there is an appendix with a long list of them (though surprisingly missing some of my faves- including the sunlight skull on the back cover of Abbey Road, the lyrics of "Only A Northern Song", and any clues from the Let It Be album, just to name a few). But the aim of this book is first and foremost to 1) Determine the origins of the hoax 2) Theorize about why it was so fascinating from a sociohistorical context, and 3) Mention how the hoax has become an enduring part of popular culture. In fact, the book gets a smidge long in the tooth once it starts listing various publications and websites having to do with Paul-Is-Dead, pop culture references over the years, as well as a "where are they now" section regarding the main figures in the original hoax. But Reeve's dedication to the subject is flawless. Almost a third of the book is dedicated to appendices, endnotes and an index.
Throughout the narrative, the author attempts to build tension like a murder-mystery/thriller, with tongue firmly in cheek (or maybe not), with varying results. But all in all, a fun study of an odd phenomenon. Great pics too. Recommended.
Turn me on Dead Man.......2006-03-27
This book is great.
It has lots and lots of Beatles Clues.. It goes thur step by step the series revolving Paul's > so called death> back then.
I never believed that Paul had died in an automobile crash. I knew it was all a Publicity stunt. The Beatles made it up themselves.. It helped their "Record Sales" at the time.
They had stopped tourning "Live" , cos they were "Burned out" with the live audiaunces. They could not tolerate all the "screaming and yelling" from their fans anymore.
John stated, "They can't even hear us on stage , so what's the point of being there." So they stopped in 1966.
that was the year I saw them twice on stage. > Wow.. nothing like it since...>
But this book covers all the clues and all the little things about Paul that you may not know, when they were "planning his dimise".
I would pick it up, it is very Intresting to read.
I learned some things I did not know...
Read it. It is "Enlightning"
"Beatles Bird"

Best Look at The 'Paul Is Dead' Hoax.......2006-02-19
Looking for a great all-in-all treatsie of the hoax? Look no further! This book has every clue imaginable - including clues that have sprung from the internet age. This is an exhaustive look at the hoax from many different angles. One of the most pleasurable aspects of the book (beyond the guilty pleasure of the subject matter) is the short and easily digested chapters, making this a perfect nightstand read.
The author, to his credit, doesn't have an axe to grind here. He doesn't try to convince you to accept any theory (Is Paul dead? Was it all coincidence? Was it a hoax by the Beatles to sell more records?), but just presents the historical facts and on-the-record comments as best they are known. A first-rate read that you'll love!

If it's a philosophical discussion of how community is changing in the digital age that is needed, you need go no further than Andrew Feenberg and Darin Barney's collection Community In The Digital Age: it updates and extends debates about who we are when we're online, discusses differences between online and offline realities, and provides critical assessments of the Internet's relationships to public life. A 'prophet' is rarely..........2004-10-17
Of all the books on the 'eternal Truths' of man, this may not win kudos for superlative style...yet for 'our age', for 'our senses', this is a work which will resonate for years to come. People come and they go, but David Lane will live long in the hearts and minds of his Folk. Whoever 'gives his life' for a concept, or belief system is at least worth the consideration and time spent in reading what motivates them 'entire'. If you cannot cope with the entire contents, then at least take to heart the very core of this work, THE EIGHTY EIGHT PRECEPTS, and you will be that much ahead of the rest. If you care about the Nation in which resides your legacy, and if you care, REALLY CARE, about the future of your children, then this is a MUST.
Get Glasses.......2003-03-06
Anyone claiming to be Pagan can't deny that it comes from their roots. Ancestry is a very important part of your culture-it IS the birth place of your culture. There is no racism in nature, culture comes from every race, stay true to it and you can't fail. Anyone "heathen" claiming that this book is racist is not doing such a good job of standing up for their heritage. D,D, and D is on my top 5 list. There is no denying the facts enclosed therein, pick it up and see for yourself. Being PC and being truthful are two totally different things. All heathens can bash christianity all they want huh? But when it comes to their race/heritage it's too daring a feat. Stay true to your blood, it won't steer you wrong.
One out of three ain't bad........2001-07-31
I'll agree with the "Damned" part...
racist propaganda.......2001-07-31
It needs to be said that this book and others from 14 words press are racist. They are way outside the mainstream of Asatru and Nordic/Germanic heathenry, and their ideas should not be taken as typical of these folks. Most of their support comes from prisons, and is considered to be extremist and radical by most other heathens. The only reason to read this book is to familiarize yourself with the morally corrupt ideas of the enemy.
A must read!.......2001-06-12
I read this book. Some of the content seemed a little out there. Maybe a bit to much detail with the math. Excellent readining for the white male/female who must know the truth.
Book Description
As a Web developer, you’ve probably heard a lot about Jakarta Struts, the popular open source framework for creating Web applications in Java. Struts is the de facto standard for Java-based Web applications; in fact, some people consider it the yardstick by which all other Web application frameworks are measured.
The Struts framework is based on a classic Model-View-Controller (MVC) design paradigm that combines Java servlets, Java Server Pages (JSP), custom tags, and message resources into a unified framework. Jakarta Struts For Dummies will get you up and running with Struts in a hurry, so you can
- Control the business logic of your applications
- Design the view for JavaServer Pages
- Validate data
- Use tiles to dynamically create pages
- Secure and troubleshoot your applications, and more
Jakarta Struts saves you coding time and helps you create an extensible development environment. Jakarta Struts For Dummies provides the information you need when you need it, and even lets you get your feet wet right away by creating a special “jump start” application in Part I. Jakarta Struts For Dummies helps you
- Understand and apply the Model-View-Controller (MVC) design pattern
- Integrate Struts into a Web application environment
- Use tag libraries to simplify your JSP pages
- Maintain control with effective security features
- Internationalize Web applications with a feature that creates easy-to-update text content, so international viewers can see pages in their own languages
- Represent all types of data, from one or two items to a huge and complex database
- Extend Jakarta’s functionality with plug-ins
- Use logging to help you troubleshoot an application
Loaded with tips, examples, and explanatory sidebars, this plain-English guide to Jakarta Struts will have you creating Web applications with Struts before you can say “Java”.

winner for beginners.......2006-09-26
I read this book way back and it's a winner for beginners! Except the name of the book (dummies?!?!) this book is an excellent start for the struts audience (again, beginners only!). Let me put it this way, if you have 0 knowledge about struts, take this book, read it and *implement* the examples - you'll understand everything, guarantee!
Robinson and Finkelstein did an excellent job explaining the intricacies of the struts framework and implementation. Well done guys!
Simple, elegant, (sometimes funny), bottom line and excellent examples!
4 stars!
intelligent, smart, brilliant.......2005-09-06
Thank you Mike, Ellen. You did an excellent job. This is one of the rare technical books that I enjoy
Remarkably good.......2004-07-27
I was surprised at how clear this book is. I was expecting less from a "for dummies" book. I had to get a struts-based web application up and running in four days flat and I bought both this book and the more highly regarded "Programming Jakarta Struts" by Chuck Cavaness (an O'Reilly book). I used both books, but relied extensively on the example applications in the "for dummies" book. When crunch time came I found myself consistently turning to the "for dummies" book.
Frankly, I thought it was a darn good book.
A Fast Way to Get Started.......2004-06-26
I like the Dummies books.
OK, so I'm not sophisticated, professional, or even very smart. But so many computer books seem to forget the first twenty pages that explain just what the hell you are trying to do. Perhaps the Dummies books take 40 pages to explain what could have been done in 20, but that's not a problem. I can read fast.
It has often happened that I first read a Dummies book and then once I'm deep into doing something with that language I need to go get a more complete Bible type book. I haven't gotten far enough into Java yet to know if this is true, but my newest task is moving a web site over to Unix (BSD), Postgre, Apache, and Java Servlets to provide server side dynamic pages; I don't have the time to read a Bible on each one of these. This book, along with some other Dummies books is getting me started a lot faster than I thought possible.
Jakarta Struts for Dummies.......2004-05-06
I did not think this book was very good. The first two
chapter start out with the introduction and overall
description of Struts and do a good job, but the third
and largest chapter discusses creating a application
using Eclipse. This is by far the
most important chapter but the user gets lost in Eclipse.
There should be another way to present the information. Also
why use Eclipse? It would be better to use notepad, TextPad
or some other simple editor so the user gets the feeling
of everything that must be done to use Struts. A better
editor would be NetBeans if you can not use Notepad or
TextPad. Hence the third chapter and the most important
one is a loss. The fourth, fifth and sixth chapter talk about
Struts MVC (Model, View, Controller) structure. Anyway
I was hopping for a better book. One that I could learn
Struts from easily. If you want to learn Eclipse and Struts
then this is the book for you. If you want to learn Struts
quickly and easily look someplace else.
