        Book Description

In an analysis of recent immigration patterns in Washington, D.C., Terry A. Repak documents the unusual predominance of women among Central American immigrants. Two thirds of the arriving immigrants in earlier decades have been women, many of them recruited by international diplomats and U.S. government employees to work as housekeepers and nannies. Repak considers the labor force participation patterns for women compared to men, the effect of immigration laws—particularly the IRCA's uneven impact on women versus men—and the profound adjustments in gender roles and identities that accompany migration.

Showing an extraordinary amount of autonomy, most of these immigrant women decided to migrate without consulting either fathers or partners, and they gained even greater independence once settled. Repak plots the career trajectories of numerous Central American immigrant women and men to illustrate the array of the women's responses, gender differences in the migration and assimilation experience, the availability of work, and the possibility for upward mobility and higher wages. Providing social, economic and political context, she looks at the conditions that set the stage for this migration, including the rapid expansion of service jobs in the 1960s and 1970s in Washington, D. C. and the political strife in such Central American countries as war-torn El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala.

        5 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2005-06-17

I found this book to be quite good. Particularly the chapter Papa was a Gamblin Man. Very funny, and I am hoping that another John Boe classic is just around the corner.

5 out of 5 stars Changed the way I feel about myself.......1998-02-21

Author John Boe writes with a witty, engaging style, marrying deep philosophy and insightful humor in this wonderful collection of essays. The title piece, "Messiness Is Next to Goddessness," helped me overcome my guilt about not being neat like all the other women in my family. This may sound trivial, but said guilt was preventing me from inviting my friends and family over. After reading this book, I stopped trying to be someone other than who I was. That's a tall order for one essay! My other favorites include "Don't Dream It, Be It," which likens the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show to a Dionysian ritual. Boe draws from his extensive knowledge of Jung and Shakespeare to comment on the absurdities of everyday life and The Human Condition. Good stuff.

Mixing humor with the insights of Jungian psychology, nationally known lecturer and storyteller John Boe tells anecdotes of his family and of ordinary life. A breezy read which will catch you off-guard with its insights

MIDNIGHT RIDERS is the definitive book about one of America's definitive rock bands. The Allman Brothers Band rose out of Macon, Ga., to become the most critically-acclaimed and popular group of its era even as tragedy haunted them.Based on extensive interviews with band members and their intimates, MIDNIGHT RIDERS tells one of the most riveting stories in all of rock 'n' roll. It is a story with all the elements of great drama: love and death and courage and betrayal and survival. And most of all, music so capitivating that it could feel as if it was caressing your very soul.

4 out of 5 stars WHERE IT ALL BEGAN.......2007-09-30

Sad that this book ended up being kind of polarizing, because it's a great book. Well-written and amazingly well-researched, Midnight Riders provides a detailed history of the band from it's founding in 1969, up through the early 90's.

This is a MUST have for any Allman Brothers Band fan. And highly recommended for anybody who likes their music books. This band has a very interesting history and you will enjoy reading about it!

        4 out of 5 stars a good book about a great band.......2007-08-15

The book is well written and has the facts correct. One may wish for more detail of the early years and less discussion of all of the drug problems, but that was the truth. Still a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Hey Little, Brown, and Co.: How About an Updated Edition?.......2007-06-24

I'll admit that I begin reading popular music nonfiction (especially ones pertaining to rock) with much lower expectations than I would almost any other genre. But Scott Freeman's account is noteworthy as being a book that would stand out as an admirable accomplishment compared with ANY nonfiction endeavor.

As for Freeman's subjects, what separates the Allman Brothers Band from its peers isn't just its unique combination of blues, jazz, and Southern rock. The sheer size of the group (with rotating members) means that there is a rogues' gallery of personalities to enjoy.

The tale's only downfall is that the middle third is vastly less interesting than the band's beginnings. That is, the Allman Brothers story follows the familiar pattern of a VH1 "Behind the Music" episode:

        1.) Band forms and struggles
2.) Band achieves fame and fortune.
3.) Band wallows in excesses of drug use, fleshpots, stupidity. Internecine warfare breaks out over petty nonsense. (I had no idea Greg was such a horse's arse or that Dicky Betts was slightly nuts).
        4.) Band disintegrates.
5.) (Optional) Band re-forms with a new sense of purpose.

Given this book's density of details, its masterful organization, and its many primary sources, it's incredible that it was apparently written without the cooperation of the ABB. Freeman really outdid himself; I'd love to see him release an updated edition covering recent releases and Betts's firing from ABB in the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars Midnight Riders: The Story of the Allman Brothers Band.......2007-03-10

This was a thorough study in the history of one of the greatest Rock-N-Roll bands ever to grace this planet. If you are an ABB enthusiast, or even a casual listener to the classic rock radio station, this is a biography that will make it all clear.

            Book Description

There are movies we love, but only one movie in a thousand actually changes the way we live, the way we look at life, or the way we define entertainment.

Broadcast journalist Nick Clooney, best known as the silver-haired movie host on the cable channel American Movie Classics, has selected twenty movies that changed us, some for the better, some for the worse.

He starts with the recent past: Saving Private Ryan, a movie that changed the way people across the world view the American generation that fought World War Two; Star Wars, a motion picture so important that a missile defense system was named for it; and The Birth of a Nation, not only the first film to be hailed as the artistic equivalent to opera, literature, and painting, but also the first film to give a cloak of respectability to racial prejudice.

Clooney's debate-starting distinctions will engage, delight, and challenge everyone who loves movies: Did Taxi Driver change the way we view individual violence? Did The Graduate change the way we view romance? Did Dr. Strangelove change the way we contemplate mass destruction? Did The Best Years of Our Lives alter our behavior toward veterans? And did Triumph of the Will almost help the Nazis win the war?

Clooney ends with an epilogue on "The Movie That Never Was": the film that could have spurred the civil rights movement if only it had been made. "Sports changed things, the military changed things, and eventually the federal government changed things," Clooney writes, but in the matter of race, he concludes, the movies changed nothing.

Thought-provoking, entertaining, and compulsively readable, The Movies That Changed Us will delight film fans of every generation.

            Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A Nifty Concept, Poorly Executed.......2005-09-16

Few movie fans will dispute Nick Clooney's underlying point: That some movies change the way we, the audience, looks at the world. A wonderful book could be written around that idea, each chapter tracing the impact of a different movie. _Movies That Changed Us_ is, unfortunately, not that book.

Clooney's grasp of historical context--or, to be charitable, his presentation of it--is too narrow and too shallow to do justice to the points he's trying to make. If you're going to make the case that a movie "changed us" you have to be able to draw the Before and After pictures in convincing detail. You also have to be able to show that the movie itself was a catalyst for change . . . not just an indicator of larger forces that actually brought the change about. Clooney (especially when writing about changes outside of the movie business) frequently fails to do this,

The chapter on _The Graduate_ suggests that Clooney recognizes this problem. He argues that the movie (with its jaded view of romance, sex, marriage, and social norms) "killed the romantic comedy." It's an interesting argument, but what if the same shift in attitude that made _The Graduate_ incomprehensible to the middle-aged parents of 1967 made the romantic comedies of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s incomprehensible to their kids? Clooney never even considers the possibility.

The same problem sinks the chapter on _The Big Parade_, one of a cluster of films from the twenties and early thirties that painted war as bleak, unheroic, and tragic. Clooney credits such films with making the West slow to move against Hitler . . . but couldn't the too-fresh memories of 10 million young lives lost in a pointless war have been behind *both* the films and the hesitancy to go to war again? Clooney never stops to ask.

The book also suffers from sins of omission: Connections that seem so obvious and important you can't imagine why Clooney doesn't mention them. Why argue that the "Omaha Beach" scene in _Saving Private Ryan_ is powerful because of its realism, and *not* contrast it with the far more "Hollywood" battle scenes later in the picture? Why spend a chapter on the 1964 anti-war movie_Dr. Strangelove_ and not connect it to the nuclear-disarmarment movement that had been gaining strength since 1946? Why write about the impact of _Star Wars_ and talk only about computer-controlled cameras . . . not the "summer blockbuster" category that it (and _Jaws_) more or less created?

I study and write about popular culture for a living, but when I bought this book I *wasn't* expecting a scholarly tome. I was looking for something entertaining and thought-provoking to read at lunch . . . unfortunately, it isn't even a good lunchtime book.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Go To The Movies with Nick!.......2004-05-24

This is a marvelous book written by a fabulous guy. He told me the film which changed him was FRANKENSTEIN! But I really think he was pulling my leg a little. In case he was really telling me the truth, I'd suggest he see VAN HELSING. This is a good addition to anyone's library if he has the slightest interest in the film world. Nick had insider information and a life-long interest in movies. After all, his sister Rosemary made many films, as has his son George. I'd love to see this fab guy in one of his own.

The choices made for this publication were excellent and the accompanying photos added to Nick's commentary. The movie he looked for in vain has been written several times. At least,it seems like I've seen that storyline in more than one film through the years. His personal story of growing up as he did (similar to Civil War times) has been portrayed, but I'd love to see his version put on the big screen. Now that his son, George, is a producer and director, perhaps he could do the script as well and show his dad and two sisters as they were in childhood. All Nick Clooney fans would mob the theater to see the old days.

I miss Nick on the radio. Whatever happened to his Marine Sgt.? Now what was his name?

            1 out of 5 stars Poorly written and edited . . ........2003-06-19

After hearing the NPR piece about this book, I thought that it had great potential, and my friends and I actually began a movie series to watch all 20 movies on his list. We bought the book to encourage conversation about each work. Unfortunately, Clooney writes poorly and seems more interested in writing about the studios (and their heads) than about the actual impact the movies may have had on the U.S. Other than one or two short paragraphs directly relating to each movie, Clooney rambles on about other, uninteresting topics. It's painful to read. He tries to wrap up each chapter with a momentous sentence, which only ends up seeming hyperbolic.

In addition, this book ought to have been edited more carefully. Clooney roams from topic to topic, without any understandable reason, and there are some egregious errors (e.g. the synopsis for "The Great Dictator" is incorrect). Practically every film has to do with war, and I'm hard-pressed to believe that they are the only ones that impacted our culture. It is also surprising that his list contains nine movies from the '30s and '40s, but only one from the past 25 years.

Underneath it all, there may be some merit to his choices, but the book certainly doesn't help understand why. I learned more from reading the reviews on IMdB.com.

5 out of 5 stars An Unforgettable Pleasure.......2003-02-28

For me to say that Nick Clooney is a skilled, authorative writer, is to say nothing in as much as that is his main occupation, and he certainly doesn't need my approval to keep doing what he seems to have a gift for.It seems meaningless to comment on his choice of subject matter by acknowledging the years he spent hosting a TV production relating to just that subject. However to state that on picking up the book, opening it randomly, and not being able to put it down for two chapters might give you an indication of his ability to captivate the reader. The easy flow of the narrative was as though he was sitting there telling you the story in person. The last time I was so absorbed by a book, It was written by his sister, Rosemary (Girl Singer). Perhaps it's in the genes.

5 out of 5 stars Clooney changes our ways of looking at movies.......2003-02-02

To be truthful, Nick Clooney doesn't really change the way we look at movies. Rather, he provides some profound insights into movies and how they affect us. By doing so, you'll never see a movie as you formerly did after reading the book. For he spotlights how certain movies, special movies that stand alone, change the way that we see the world, conduct our lives, create our moral benchmarks, even peer into our own souls.
If you're seeking movie reviews, this book will take you beyond the ordinary parameters that we've come to expect and thrust you into a realm where you will ponder the immense power of this medium.
For me, personally, one of the most telling chapters dealt with Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver." The movie has always been high on my list of well-made, powerful expositions on the seamier side of our political and social underbelly. But, after reading Clooney's insights into this "movie that changed us", I can clearly see the reverbrations that it has wrought in our world.
Clooney writes with verve and wisdom, two qualities not always joined together. For the film aficianado and those intrigued by social history, this book is a must. It is a book that will provoke discussion and argument, but for which we are all richer for having read it.

4 out of 5 stars Elves have pointy ears........2000-04-13

If that is your general knowledge on elves, you need this book!

I bought this book myself because I felt I could have use of the background information for a campaign into Cormanthor and Myth Drannor. Well, this book is GREAT for that, but while reading it I got a sudden urge to bring a REAL capaign into this world.

THIS world, which is 700 years back in time from the official Forgotten Realms campaign year, is a world very much alive in the elven forests, a world of high magic in the elven cities, and a world about to see the darkest days.

In this Arcane Age product you will find all the help and information you need to start a true native Cormanthyran campaign, or a destination for unweary time-travelers.

Deatiling the Elven Mindset, the Elven Ages, Cormanthyr's Civilization, Magic of the People, Mythals and magical items, and places such as Myth Drannor - City of Song, Semberholme the Elven Court and the Tangled Vale, aswell as their histories!

But most importantly this book deals with people, the elves. I believe this book should be read by anyone planning on playing an elven character, whether as a player or as a DM's NPC, to fully understand what elves are all about. (DM's descretion needed if they plan a campaign in this age.)

Included is a map of Cormanthyr and one of Myth Drannor.

Nice artwork but could use more maps.

Warmly recommended with the accessory "The Fall of Myth Drannor" for adventure ideas, plots and campaigns leading to the Fall.

              Have fun gaming!

5 out of 5 stars You wanna talk about insight into elven culture? It's here........2000-04-08

Cormanthyr: Empire of the Elves is one of the best references for elven culture I've found. This book goes over elven high magic, dualists they're like specialist mages only they study one school of magic AND it's opposite), how one becomes an elven high mage, and the laying of mythals. MYTHALS! (You can make your own Myth Drannor!) It also has background on the elven court on the main land of Faerun (as opposed to Evermeet), and lot of information on what clans mainland elves might belong to, plus the most prolific members of each listed clan. I just don't understand how someone could say that this book is anything but amazing!

1 out of 5 stars Cormanthyr - Land of Tolkeen's Silly, Dying Elves.......2000-01-06

I don't know who at TSR seems to think that elves are little more than slothful, frivolous flakes, but it has permiated every aspect of their product line for a long time. This supplement goes into vast detail about how elves can't do anything quickly, it takes them years, even centuries of debate to figure out what to do about a problem; and how they view themselves as real "People" and everyone else is merely "Not People", racism in other words. They also seem to be a very LAWFUL society for a group that has been, since day 1 of AD&D, listed as CHAOTIC. It may even be worse than material written for Dragonlance's own band of of racist elves, the Silvanesti, who are listed as also being CG...yet they kept the Kagonesti Elves as slaves, because the Silvanesti believed they were superior...uh-huh, I see... The author talks a lot about magic, art and food, but says nothing about it! No concept of recipes for elven food, except that non-elves aren't advanced enough to taste the subtlties of it. That elves use waterfalls to shape their sculptures through erosion...hope they're not making these things for their human pals, because they will be years dead before it's finished. Plus the overriding concept that the elves are retreating and dying out seems to alude to the destruction of the fantasy element of the whole AD&D millieu, and that somehow magic is fading from the land. This book is not worth the money.

              Book Description

OK, why a book of nothing but tips? Because that's where all the really slick, really useful, and really fun stuff is. It's true! If we're looking through a book and we see the word "Tip" we're all immediately drawn to it, because we know we're about to learn something great. Maybe it's an undocumented keyboard shortcut, a hidden inside secret, or just a faster, better way to do something we do every day. The only problem with the tips in these books is, there's never enough of 'em. That is, until now.

That's because this book is packed cover-to-cover, wall-to-wall with nothing but those cool Photoshop CS sidebar tips. Every tip is designed to make you work faster, smarter, and have more fun using Photoshop CS. There's no detailed descriptions of CYMK separation set-ups, or long boring discussions on color management theory--it's just tips--short, sweet, and to the point.

But we've done the "tip" idea one better, because every tip has a full-color graphic to make the tips even more accessible, even more fun, and even easier to use. Most importantly, to get in this book they've got to be "Killer Tips" The kind of tip that makes you smile, nod, and then call all your friends and "tune them up" with your new status as Photoshop guru.

If you've wondered how the pros get twice the work done in half the time, it's because they know all the tips, all the tricks, and now with this book--so will you.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of useful tips.......2007-07-25

I have used Photoshop for several years. Nonetheless this book taught me many useful techniques and time-saving tips I had not learned elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars An old classic........2007-01-11

Read it again and again.Especially for the ones who are familiar with the CS2 killers!

5 out of 5 stars Paid for itself in a weekend!.......2004-03-23

Picked it up this weekend, and although I've been on CS since the release, have saved myself enough time, to have more then paid for the book! I can't wait to get through more of it. Found many tips that just help me work faster. Worth a read.

5 out of 5 stars Right tool for the right job.......2004-03-13

I love it when people buy a book that's clearly labeled as "nothing but tips", then go online and express shock and dismay that the book is, ehhh, nothing but short tips, and not what they expected.

(Sorry for the misanthropic outburst. I'll lighten up from now on, promise.)

I use Photoshop about every day and my books are divided into 2 categories, the ones I dip into all the time while I'm working and the tutorials I rarely get the time to explore. Scott kelby writes both kinds of books, but I've liked Killer Tips best and used them since the PS 6 version because they teach reams of useful aspects of using PS. Some of the tips I already know or don't apply to how I use PS, but for the most part I get better at PS using these books than I do any other. It's like, 20-some bucks and you get over 300 tips, so it's less than a dollar a tip. I spend more on toner every month, and the advanced tips chapter alone is worth the price.
