        Book Description

Social trends over the past 25 years strongly indicate the significance of occupational pursuits in the plans and lives of women. In the future, most women will work outside the home and this work will play an increasingly important role in their lives. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (1989) estimates that by the year 2000, the labor force is expected to grow 18% -- an increase of 21 million workers. It is also estimated that women and minorities will account for a large percentage of that growth. A significant question that needs to be asked is how will counselors help women prepare for making career choices in the future? The models, strategies, methods and information on career counseling described and elaborated in this volume may help to show the way. br br Devoted to presenting important advances and new information in the field of career counseling for women, this book focuses primarily on identifying, reporting, and evaluating significant applied developments in the field -- counseling theories, concepts, and techniques utilized in career planning and decision making for women. It is an ideal collection for counselors, counseling and industrial psychologists, management scientists focusing on career counseling, and sociologists specializing in women and work. br

                  Book Description

Combining attention to lived experience with the critical tools of ethics, Karey Harwood explores why many women who use high-tech assisted reproduction methods tend to use them repeatedly, even when the results are unsuccessful. With a compassionate look at the individual decision making behind the desire to become pregnant and the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART), Harwood extends the public conversation beyond debates about individual choice by considering the experiences of families and by addressing the broader ethical problems presented by these technologies.

"I'm Drunk" has gotten the most use, while "Quit Picking Your Nose," "Eat Me!" and "Are You Available?" are three of my personal favorites. Buy two now!

4 out of 5 stars Maybe The Author Is Correct.......2007-06-27

I almost laughed when the read the parts about the melancholy nature of Swedes but as I'm in the process of reading a Garbo biography, maybe the author's point is correct - blast me if you want and call me un-PC, etc. but maybe it's the Swedish way. It was a joy to read this book and learn some of how they song crafted, and the trials and tribulations they went through in the throes of stardom - the opening chapters on each member were a delight, too, and I'm glad Palm didn't skimp on their formulative era either - I was especially surprised to read about the scorn and negativity ABBA felt from their own country, as if the whole nation had decided collectively that they weren't "cool," taking their cues from the country's music press. A must for ABBA fans or even anyone who has a mild interest in them.

It's fun to know the background of all of the members of ABBA, and to find out what happened to them after the group disbanded.

I very highly recommend this book for those who are interested
not only in the public but private sides of A,B,B, and A. I was especially interested in tracing the paths each member took to
finally arrive at their music we love.
I also learned what a difficult business selling music was and is,
as well as something about Sweden and her people. Very enjoyable
                          reading.

                          1 out of 5 stars ABBA story.......2007-01-31

The book is very well written. It is the detail description of somehow mysterious pop group, which is placed just after Elvis and Beatles, as far as the number of sold records is concerned.
You will not find here something completely unexpected. Insteed, you will find a lot of details which are not easly available.
So, for anybody who is a real fan of ABBA - this book is a must !

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Account of ABBA and Sweden.......2007-01-12

This book is not a quick read, but if you love ABBA it is more than worth the time. Carl Magnus Palm did an amazing job of researching the members of ABBA and in painting a vivid picture of each member as an individual. I also learned a lot about the history of Sweden, the evolution of the music business in Sweden, and about the music business in general. It is amazing how different our imagination of what ABBA's life was like is from the truth. I appreciate the time he took to pull this book together and help me really understand the band. They really went through a lot to bring their music to us, and for that I will be eternally greatful!!

... well she was a little odd. I found the book to be a little too far-fetched, even for someone as open-minded as myself. She attended one or two of our weekly UFO meetings in Pine Bush, NY back in the early 90s (when we used to have them) - in fact, she and her book were the reason for the meetings being formed! She brought with her videotapes which she claimed were of an alien craft flying over Pine Bush. Sadly it was actually a C5A Galaxy Aircraft used by the military to transport cargo. If you've never seen or heard one fly over, you WOULD think it was something weird. But we see them all the time in this area. Regardless, she is the person who got me interested in "looking up" to see what might be there. Because of that, I have witnessed some very strange things in the sky. So I thank her for peaking my interest in UFOs. So for curiosity sake, I would give the book a read through.

While writing this note, I did a search for her on the Internet and discovered that she passed away on 12/16/2002 from a long battle with pancreatic cancer. My sympathy goes to her and her family.

She brings up the old looney canards about the Trilateral Commission and the Bildebergs ( read Jews} who control the world. She claims there are aliens in her photos. See for yourself and strain your imagination. I truly beleive thet strange things are happening in Pine Bush but Ms. Crystall offers nary a solid piece 0f documentation in her book.

                          1 out of 5 stars A waste of paper........1999-04-16

(4/15/99) A little late, but better late... Ms Crystall claims we're being invaded and she's part of it. She claims that aliens are noisily constructing underground installations in Pine Bush, NY. She pursues alien craft. The book is full of questionable assertions. 27 photos and sketches that should have been the strongest part of the book turn out to be its weakest. She claims that she was a prof'l photographer by the time she wrote the book and that she had taken photos of "...crafts, visitors, and related phenomena depicting a technology far beyond the limits of human science." Yet we don't see a single one of those photos! The 27 photos are in B&W yet she used color film! No photos by the other witnesses. "...clear photos of the crafts and/or the visitors are virtually impossible to take with glass-lensed cameras."! Because some rock music groups wrote songs about UFOs Ms Crystall believes that they REALLY saw UFOs also. She gives a couple of examples of large-crowd events in which UFOs were (supposedly) seen by everyone yet this never made the news! Playing "sky-games", indeed! She theorizes that the aliens may be a dying race and they're mutilating cattle for their blood! She includes Barney & Betty Hill, MJ-12 documents, auras, spirit guides, Kirlian photography, channeling, abduction-hypnosis, Roswell, etc. You name it, it's in the book.... Edward Lopez, NYC.

                          5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......1999-03-28

People write about abductions and the military. This book covers what most people who have seen UFOs have had to deal with--sightings of things in the sky while driving and while taking garbage out at night to find a large something-or-other hovering near the house.

If this book is true we are all in trouble. Why hasn't this author been on Oprah showing the photographs and video? I want to see this video she has taken.

4 out of 5 stars "An Insult To Intelligence"? I think not........1998-04-04

Though the author of this book does make inferences without much evidence, most of ufology does the very same thing. After all, ufologists have not been able to produce any substantial physical evidence of the existance of extraterrestrial life, yet many people unquestioningly believe that such beings not only exist but visit our planet and abduct people with which to experiment. I feel that this book is valuable, despite its lack of scientific method. SILENT INVASION is more of a "what if?" scenario than cold hard factual evidence, but this has value as well. If a book does nothing more than cause its readers to question "truth" and "reality", what a valuable contribution that book has made! Read SILENT INVASION if only for entertainment purposes...it's quite interesting.

A great book on computer chess from two of the field's pioneers.

5 out of 5 stars State-of-the-art, clear and entertaining computer chess book.......1997-09-22

This excellent book was and still is one of the state-of-the-art books in computer chess literature, dealing with both a very interesting history of computer chess, including many rare examples of the play of early programs, and several recent examples of the best actual programs, as well as discussing in sufficient detail the quite complex technical aspects of programming a computer to play chess.

In "The Challenge Is World Champion Kasparov", we are introduced to one of the first encounters between Garry Kasparov and the former incarnation of Deep Blue, then called Deep Thought, through the detailed discussion of the proceedings and analysis of both games. A game between Karpov and Deep Thought is also carefully analyzed.

Next, "The Early Ideas" present historically the pioneer works of Shannon, Turing, Zuse, and many others, whose theorical works provided the basement for writing procedures to allow a machine to play chess.

Then, in "The First Working Programs", we see Bernstein, Kotok, McCarthy, and other AI specialist, as they struggled to implement Shannon's ideas to make Jurassic computers play some passable chess. Several games between both computers and humans are discussed.

After these preliminary attemps, "The Formative Years" discusses more advanced programs, such as Greenblatt's MacHack VI program, Botvinnik's Pioneer, and specially Slate & Atkin's Chess program and soviet Kaissa, focusing both on the internal of the programs and on relevant sample games.

The following chapter, "The Challenges for the Levy Bet", tells us all the details of the famous Levy bet, nicely commented by co-author David Levy himself. The best games between him and Chess are commented, as well as a particularly beautiful miniature of Blitz against Belle.

As the field advances, "The Computer Becomes a Master" discusses the ever increasing achievements of the new generation of stronger hardware-assisted chess programs, such as Belle (written by Ken Thompson, who also has developed many Endgame Databases) and Cray Blitz (written by Bob Hyatt, who is also the author of Crafty, a strong freeware chess program), which use their incredibly fast underlying hardware to compensate for their lack of chess sophistication. We can also read all about how the first International human Masters began to know defeat against them on a regular basis.

The next step, the defeat of strong human Grandmasters, is introduced in "Eyeball to Eyeball with Grandmasters", where we see several commented games between the strongest chess programs, such as Deep Thought and Hitech, and human grandmasters such as Miles and Larsen. Also, microprocessor commercial chess program Mephisto has a close encounter of the 3rd kind against macroprocessor non-commercial Deep Thought, and far from ashamed, beats him hands down !

Once those historical details have been dealt with, the book enters into a discussion of the more advanced chess techniques there are, such as "Endgame Play and Endgame Databases", an area pioneered by Ken Thompson's Belle, where computers have conquered new grounds, and become invincible players. The development of a K+R vs K database is discussed in detail enough to allow anyone to program it, and then both games of the mini-match between grandmaster Walter Browne and Belle, the former trying to mate the computer with K+Q against K+R, are commented in detail.

A very technical chapter follows, "Search Techniques Used by Chess Programs", where the most advanced techniques are explained, such as Minimaxing, Alpha-Beta prunning, Iterative Deepening, and a large, detailed, and complete explanation of Hash tables, with many diagrams and examples, to make it crystal clear. Other aspects such as Time management, Evaluation functions, Move generation, etc. are thoroughly discussed as well.

The next chapter, "The Evolution of Computing Systems for Chess Programs", explains what lies ahead: faster processors, chess-specific hardware, multiprocessors, and makes dire predictions on the increment of playing strength all these advances will bring.

Once these almost unearthly machines have been shown, it is the time for down-to-earth-ones, the ones everyone can buy, and "Commecially Available Chess Computers and Software" introduces them all, from the primitive, very early Chess Challenger, to Mephisto Almeria announcing mate in 7 to a 2350 ELO player under tournament conditions.

On "Writing a Chess Program" gives a concise advice on how to write a chess program oneself, and by way of comparison shows a table with the ELO rating of the best chess programs as compared to that of their programmers and more chess-profficient technical advisors.

Finally, closing the book with a gem, "Stop Press" shows commercial program Mephisto Portoroz defeating former World Champion Anatoli Karpov during a simultaneous exhibition. That such a machine, which anyone could buy, without any special ultrafast hardware, can defend successfully against as superb a grandmaster as Karpov, says much about how far computer chess has progressed.

The book closes with an extensive bibliography given in "Additional Reading", and some information on the ICCA, given in "Appendix A: The International Computer Chess Association", and a table with complementary data in "Appendix B: Results of Major Tournaments".

5 out of 5 stars A book for the Computer and Chess Enthusiest........1997-05-13

If you like to program computers and you love chess then "How Computers Play Chess" is for you. This easy to read and intuitive book by Chess Master David Levy takes you on a tour guide of man's attempt to create a machine that can master that ancient game of strategy, Chess. You'll gain an introductory view of how computers go about playing the game of chess including the types the algorithms that are used and the general theorys behind these "thinking machines". Levy also introduces some of his own thoughts on the strenghts of computer chess and even includes a few pradictions on when a computer will be able to defeat a human world champion. I read this book in an attemp to satisfy a life long desire I've had to create a computer program that could be me in chess. I've found that this book as gotten me off to an excellent start

4 out of 5 stars Interesting history, technically simple.......1996-07-14

This book is a definitive history of computers and chess up through Deep Thought in 1990. Largely a survey, it rarely takes a strong point of view of its own. For someone looking for such a history, or for a basic consideration of chess algorithms from alpha-beta pruning through hash tables, killer move tables, and quiesence, it is a fine book. For my money, though, it did not go into enough depth either in technical issues such as the details of even a simple evaluation function or move generator, or in the philosophical issues raised by computer chess.

Over 75% of network attacks are targeted at the web application layer. This book provides explicit hacks, tutorials, penetration tests, and step-by-step demonstrations for security professionals and Web application developers to defend their most vulnerable applications.

This book defines Web application security, why it should be addressed earlier in the lifecycle in development and quality assurance, and how it differs from other types of Internet security. Additionally, the book examines the procedures and technologies that are essential to developing, penetration testing and releasing a secure Web application. Through a review of recent Web application breaches, the book will expose the prolific methods hackers use to execute Web attacks using common vulnerabilities such as SQL Injection, Cross-Site Scripting and Buffer Overflows in the application layer. By taking an in-depth look at the techniques hackers use to exploit Web applications, readers will be better equipped to protect confidential.

5 out of 5 stars Good read for the security conscious.......2007-03-17

When I came across this book on the O'Reilly website I was immediately interested, as web applications are becoming more and more prevalent. And other than thinking it covered methods of securing web applications I had no preconceived assumptions. My main aspiration for this book was to give me better awareness of security in the area of web applications and to provide me with some tools. After having read this book I can say that it has done both.

Each of the chapters in this book seem to follow a pattern of first defining the topic, second giving real world examples, and finally providing the reader with solutions. The book begins by providing a history of the hacking methodology and defining the various types of hacking. It was interesting to learn about some of the various hacks and hackers. For example, I had no idea Steve Jobs (Apple Computers) used to be a hacker.

In chapter two the author discusses what he calls a "Code Grinder", and how to not become or produce a code grinder. A code grinder is someone who works in a highly regulated environment where creativity is discouraged. I found it interesting that a code grinder environment typically produces more unsecure code then an environment that is open and promotes creativity.

Chapter three discusses the risks associated with mobile code. Chapter four covers vulnerable CGI scripts and introduces the reader to some tools such as Nikto and Web Hack Control Center to scan your website to find vulnerabilities. The author goes on to discuss the issues faced by the various CGI scripting languages, and then provides an outline of rules to writing secure CGI scripts.

Chapter five covers hacking techniques and tools. This section gets you into the mind of a hacker, what are their goals, how are those goals achieved and what tools do they use. In chapter six the topic is "Code Auditing and Reverse Engineering." This chapter I found exceptionally interesting and helpful. The author takes you through various types of vulnerabilities and with each weakness explains how it affects each of the more popular programming/scripting languages. And to take it a step further the author also provides the reader with the functions/methods for each programming/scripting language that are vulnerable to attack and then explains either how to use those functions securely or gives an alternative function/method that is more secure.

Chapters seven through ten cover securing code in specific languages; Java, XML, ActiveX, and ColdFusion. Chapter eleven discusses developing security enabled applications using such technologies as PGP, SSL, and PKI. Finally in chapter twelve the author wraps up the book by taking the reader through creating and working with a security plan.

                          CONCLUSION
                          --
I found this book to be interesting and a good read. I plan to make use of some of the tools it introduced in hardening applications I work with and develop. And as I mentioned before, the chapter on code auditing will be extremely useful to me in cleaning up existing apps and developing new ones. I liked this book and I would recommend it to anyone who is writing code.

5 out of 5 stars Great Overview of a complex subject!.......2007-02-20

With the increasing number of incidents of crime that is occurring on the world wide web it behooves every programmer to become fluent in all aspects of information security. This book provides a great overview of the various methods a hacker uses to penetrate various forms of web architectures. The author's goals it seems was to cover a broad subject by touching on all important aspects of securing a website.

Throughout the book a hacker mindset is presented and how to design your website to overcome the tools and tricks of the hacker. For instance in many of the chapters the manner of attack that a hacker would use to exploit a piece of technology is covered. Overall I believe this book to be a good introduction to the field of securing websites. Since security in of itself is such a broad subject and the Internet is also a broad subject it is unfair to expect one book to cover all aspects of a complex and dynamic environment

                          Book Description

In today's market, secure software is a must for consumers. Many developers, however, are not familiar with the techniques needed to produce secure code or detect existing vulnerabilities. The Software Vulnerability Guide helps developers and testers better understand the underlying security flaws in software and provides an easy-to-use reference for security bugs. Most of these bugs (and the viruses, worms, and exploits that derive from them) start out as programmer mistakes. With this guide, professional programmers and testers will learn how to find, fix, and prevent these vulnerabilities before their software reaches the market. Detailed explanations and examples are provided for each of the vulnerabilities, as well as a summary sheet that can be referenced quickly. Tools that make it easier to recognize and prevent vulnerabilities are also explored, and source code snippets, commentary, and techniques are provided in easy-to-read sidebars. This guide is a must have for today's software developers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for software developers.......2006-05-30

Every month, hundreds of security vulnerabilities and warnings are announced. Although they cover a wide set of products and programs, the underlying reason for them is generally the same: insecurely written software. When software is written in insecure code (which includes most software programs written today), serious security flaws are inevitable.

The Software Vulnerability Guide was written to help software developers acquire the methods necessary to write secure code and find existing problems in current software. After making a persuasive case for secure code in part one, the book progresses into the areas that are crucial to writing secure software.

Part two of the book covers system-level attacks and details important topics such as passwords, scripts and macros, and dynamic linking and loading (DLL). Part three plunges into attacks on the software, exploring heady concepts such as buffer overflows, format-string vulnerabilities, and integer overflow vulnerabilities. Most of these attacks have been known for decades but are only receiving wide-scale attention now.

Further chapters delve into securing data and Web servers. For each of the vulnerabilities mentioned, the authors describe how they occur and how to prevent them.

An enclosed CD-ROM contains software examples described in the text, plus various open-source security software testing tools, including Ethereal, Nessus, and Nmap. Any business serious about writing secure software should ensure that all of its code writers receive a copy of this book

I've maybe three or four books on the subject of software security and this is the best so far. Very concise and well organized and covers just about every facet of software vulnerabilities that I've ever heard of. Very helpful too because at the end of each chapter it gives detailed advice on how to avoid the vulnerability that they dicussed. Also, the CD comes with some nice tools and source code. I definately learned a lot from this book and highly recommend it to both web application and desktop application developers.

Herbert H. Thompson and Scott G. Chase's Software Vulnerability Guide comes from a security director and a security architect, drawing upon their combined expertise to consider techniques developers need to use to produce secure code in modern software. Developers and testers receive both tools and assessments of tools designed to help recognize and prevent common vulnerabilties in source code. Commentary and code examples pack a guide which includes a CD-ROM with source code and many tools described within.

If you consider yourself a solid developer but know you probably don't give the security of your software/databases as much attention as you should, then you need to get your hands on The Software Vulnerability Guide.

Unlike a lot of other security books, this one isn't full of a bunch of vagure generalities. It gives you solid details on some of the most common (and perhaps some less common) holes that exist in the software you just released. The information contained in each useful chapter is easily digestable by beginners.

Buy the book and spare yourself the embarrassment from some twenty something who stole some script off the web and deleted all the data in your intranet application.
