Career Development Theory.......2001-07-19
This text starts with a forward by John Krumboltz. Could you ask for a more respected career development theorist to endorse a book? The text addresses the career development of African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans and Native Americans. This is one of the few texts that offers the practitioner a guide toward a multicultural theory of career development, and ideas for reliable career assessment and intervention with racial and ethnic minorities.

Book Description
In the first political analysis of unemployment in a socialist country, Susan Woodward argues that the bloody conflicts that are destroying Yugoslavia stem not so much from ancient ethnic hatreds as from the political and social divisions created by a failed socialist program to prevent capitalist joblessness. Under Communism the concept of socialist unemployment was considered an oxymoron; when it appeared in postwar Yugoslavia, it was dismissed as illusory or as a transitory consequence of Yugoslavia's unorthodox experiments with worker-managed firms. In Woodward's view, however, it was only a matter of time before countries in the former Soviet bloc caught up with Yugoslavia, confronting the same unintended consequences of economic reforms required to bring socialist states into the world economy.
By 1985, Yugoslavia's unemployment rate had risen to 15 percent. How was it that a labor-oriented government managed to tolerate so clear a violation of the socialist commitment to full employment? Proposing a politically based model to explain this paradox, Woodward analyzes the ideology of economic growth, and shows that international constraints, rather than organized political pressures, defined government policy. She argues that unemployment became politically "invisible," owing to its redefinition in terms of guaranteed subsistence and political exclusion, with the result that it corrupted and ultimately dissolved the authority of all political institutions. Forced to balance domestic policies aimed at sustaining minimum standards of living and achieving productivity growth against the conflicting demands of the world economy and national security, the leadership inadvertently recreated the social relations of agrarian communities within a postindustrial society.

Funny and down right comedy.......1999-06-29
I was A really good book I can't stop lauaging!
Very funny!.......1997-09-29
I really enjoyed the third installment of this hilarious series of books! Althought it was entertaining, it was not as good as the first two, Snaps and Double Snaps. I find these books particularly interesting because i used to live in the city and play "snaps" with my friends and see who came up with the best insult.
Book Description
Now you can add authentic rock licks to your vocabulary. Here are 101 definitive phrases, plus a demonstration CD, from every major rock guitar era, neatly organized into easy-to-use categories. They're all here! Includes licks from the Early Rock era, and the '60s through the '90s, plus a listing of suggested recordings.
Customer Reviews:
This is worthless.......2006-05-02
I bought this expecting to get 101 generic rock licks that I could use while improvising, but that's not what this book is. It's just a variety of very recignizeable bits and pieces of various songs, some rhythm parts, some solo parts. I would only recommend this if you're interested in learning three or four bars of a Nirvana song, two or three bars of a Pink Floyd song, etc. Like, "Impress your friends by knowing the first two bars of Lithium by Nirvana". You may as well just buy the songbooks for your favorite albums and get the whole songs - it's not like there's any analysis of anything in here. I can't see any purpose in this book existing except maybe if you're thinking of buying a Fender Cyber-Twin amp, this is a great demonstration of all the sounds that it can produce.
Rock Licks review.......2005-09-19
This is a great reference guide but beginners will find it a little advanced. Still all in all a good book to have on hand, beginner or not.
Not up to the previous 2 volumes.......2005-03-31
I have and enjoy the previous 2 books of the series, 101 must know blues licks and 101 must know jazz licks. The licks choosen and the quality of the recording of those 2 books are beyond and above what you will find here.
The author decided to use a modeling amp for this recording. I have nothing against modeling amps and amp pluggins, but the settings used to record this book are really bad. Also the licks sellected are uninspiring. Still is not completely garbage there are sone nice licks, yet the bar was raised high by the previous 2 books and I have to judge accordingly.
Book Description
Lawyers in the United States are frequently described as “hired guns,” willing to fight for any client and advance any interest. Claiming that their own beliefs are irrelevant to their work, they view lawyering as a technical activity, not a moral or political one.
But there are others, those the authors call cause lawyers, who refuse to put aside their own convictions while they do their legal work. This “deviant” strain of lawyering is as significant as it is controversial, both in the legal profession and in the world of politics. It challenges mainstream ideas of what lawyers should do and of how they should behave.
Human rights lawyers, feminist lawyers, right-to-life lawyers, civil rights and civil liberties lawyers, anti-death penalty lawyers, environmental lawyers, property rights lawyers, anti-poverty lawyers—cause lawyers go by many names, serving many causes. Something to Believe In explores the work that cause lawyers do, the role of moral and political commitment in their practice, their relationships to the organized legal profession, and the contributions they make to democratic politics.

Nice place to start and nice place to return.......2007-07-07
The average beginner thinks that the kind of magic Longe teaches is "a good place to start", and nothing else. When the reader lacks performing experience, he is impressed by "advanced methods" because the lack of performing experience leads him to misjudge the value of the final product an entertainer delivers to his audience. Therefore, every dabbler focus on technique alone, and blames lack of technical skill for his failures when he performs for a real audience. Some years latter, after buying and studying the more expensive books in card magic, such as the professional books sold by Hermetic Press, and maybe even working as a semi-professional magician for some time, the reader rediscovers Bob Longe and Karl Fulves. Then he realizes how good these authors are. Even Peter Duffie has worked on ideas by Karl Fulves. The merit of Bob Longe is that he worked very hard at creating effective ways to perform the same effects that were extremely complicated when other authors conceived them. However, the dabbler lacks the acting and timing skills to use subtlety effectively, and cannot perform so called "automatic tricks" correctly. Sleight of hand techniques that afford coverage are more effective for the dabbler, as he does not need to worry about misdirecting an audience with his acting. Additionally, the difficult manipulations force the student of card magic to practice seriously and dedicatedly before being able to perform for an audience. The reason why you read so many negative comments about the books by Longe and Fulves is simply because someone performed the tricks without careful study and practice, failed in front of the spectators because of his lack of dedication and discipline, and then blames the books! Experience teaches you how to control your spectator's attention and you can then simply leave something on a table, as Tommy Wonder used to do, while your audience watches something else, and then, surprise them with the startling production of the item you put on the table without coverage of any kind (check the "Visions of Wonder" videos and the Books of Wonder).
My advice is: Buy this book to discover effective card magic you can perform if you lack previous experience, without a lot of practice (you don't need a lot of practice, but be sure you know the trick well before performing for an audience, learn one trick at a time, and practice it enough, remember you want to amaze and mystify your friends) If you really like card magic after trying these tricks, buy the Royal Road to Card Magic. If card magic becomes your new passion, buy Card College, by Roberto Giobbi. Then, read Bob Longe again and understand that the reason why you failed with some of these tricks is because you lacked practice (you were simply beginning, you had not rehearsed your performance enough, you were not able to remember what to do next, did not understand how to cover a move with misdirection, etc.). Then, you will discover that you can do the same things you achieve with complex sleight of hand in very clever and effective ways, practically under the nose of the spectators and you like it!
Easy tricks, easy to learn, good book........2006-02-14
I liked this little book. I like to play around with cards a bit and picked this up looking for some easy tricks that even a dolt like me could do. The book fills the bill admirably. I can't comment on what a more professional magician would think - maybe these are useful for eighth graders only - I don't know. The tricks are well explained and should be easy to figure out for anyone with more than a passing interest. Good book.
Card Magic.......2003-04-21
This book is a great one for some sleights and the illustrations aren't very descriptive, but just enough so that you can understand the basic concept. The order of the tricks was put together well. If you want a book that will start you on the intermediate scale for magic with cards, get this book.
Not for anyone remotely interested in magic.......2001-09-13
This book is a collection of silly, obvious tricks requiring nothing but the most primitive sleight-of hand. I bought this book when I was first starting out in magic, but even with little experience I understood the worthlesness of these effects. If someone wants to demonstrate puzzles, that are cumbersome and may amuse but do not at all mystify this is the book for him. In addition I found the writing style obnoxious and condescending.
Yes, now _you_ can do it!.......2000-03-27
As a very bad amateur magician dealing exclusively with card tricks, I can't recommend this book (or any of Longe's books) highly enough. He shows you just how _simple_ card tricks really are. The illustrations are as clear as they can be. In fact, after reading this book some years ago, I was able to put the different techniques together and create my own tricks! So. . .if you want to amaze people (and _amaze_ yourself with what you can do), then Longe is that place to start.

Book Description
The Object-Oriented Thought Process, Second Edition will lay the foundation in object-oriented concepts and then explain how various object technologies are used. Author Matt Weisfeld introduces object-oriented concepts, then covers abstraction, public and private classes, reusing code, and devloping frameworks. Later chapters cover building objects that work with XML, databases, and distributed systems (including EJBs, .NET, Web Services and more).Throughout the book Matt uses UML, the standard language for modeling objects, to provide illustration and examples of each concept.
Download Description
The Object-Oriented Thought Process is a concise and readable primer. Matt Weisfeld's years of programming, teaching, and writing have given him a flair for presenting highly technical topics in a clear and interesting manner. He is able to blend abstract concepts with ingenious examples and clear illustrations to quickly teach powerful OOP techniques. The code examples are written in Java and UML but are designed in such a way that a reader with no previous experience will still understand them. The Object-Oriented Thought Process is a clear and accessible alternative to the often dry and overly dense books available on the market today.
Customer Reviews:
Just great!.......2007-06-29
This book is the OOP concepts starting point with clear definitions of oop terms and practices. Just don't try to get into oop without getting the idea first.
Only explanation of OOP that made sense to me.......2007-05-21
I am a relative newcomer to object-oriented programming (OOP), though I am an experienced programmer in non-OOP languages (Fortran 90, IDL). I've had several people try to explain to me what OOP is and isn't, but thier explanations never made sense. I picked this book up and read it and everything clicked the first time through. The author does a great job of explaining OOP and why it is important.
I highly recommend reading this book cover-to-cover BEFORE learning an OOP language. And, although the examples all use Java code and I was learning Ruby, I found that it didn't matter. So, don't think you have to know or be learning Java to get something from this book.
Excellent Book.......2007-05-14
This is an excellent book. Its perfect for anybody looking for a book to get a little further insight into how object oriented concepts are used. I have read a few reference books that describe object oriented concepts such as classes, interfaces, objects, ect. And although they explain the concepts and how to code them they do not go to far in regards to the underlining meaning of the concepts and how they all fit together or how to use them. This is what the books about.
A big picture book: OT concepts not just syntax.......2007-03-24
If you're looking for detailed coverage of UML, Java or C# syntax, you should look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for a conceptual description of OT (object technologies) then this is definitely the book for you.
This book starts at a very high level, and for the most part stays there. This book will be a good starting point if you learn best by studying high-level concepts first, then delving into detail later. If you like all the nitty-gritty detail first, then save this book for later when you are tying everything together into the big-picture.
This book falls into the big-picture category. It provides a wonderful foundation of not just HOW but more importantly WHY. It covers all the significant OT topics such as Encapsulation, Inheritance vs. Composition, Polymorphism, Inheritance, Interface, etc. etc.
The key with this book is it doesn't get lost in the details. Instead it uses just the right amount to go along with the powerful concepts being presented.
This is a must have for software developers.......2007-03-11
Many people think they learned Object-Oriented development in school or on their own, but most of these people are mistaken. Here's a quick test - what is it? If you said anything along the lines of "a way of programming ..." or worse yet quoted the four buzzwords, then there's a good chance you could learn from this book. Object-Oriented development is most fundamentally a way of designing software, and as such a way of thinking. One the design is done (properly), the programming aspects are mostly straightforward.
This book is the best I have seen at explaining that thought process, why it came about, and what benefits it can provide. As a software development manager, I have recommended this book to numerous staff who were able to learn from it.
