Book Description
A key component of social life, discourse mediates the processes of class formation and social conflict. Drawing on dialogic theory and building on the work of E. P. Thompson, Marc W. Steinberg argues for the importance of incorporating discursive analysis into the historical reconstruction of class experience. Amending models of collective action, he offers new insights on how discourse shapes the dynamics of popular protest. To support his thesis, he presents studies of two English trade groups in the 1820s: cotton spinners from Lancashire factory towns and London silk weavers. For each case, Steinberg closely examines the labor process, industrial organization, social life, community politics, discursive struggles, and collective actions. By describing how workers shared experiences of exploitation and oppression in their daily lives, he shows how discourses of contention were products of struggle and how they framed possibilities for collective action. Embracing work in literary theory, sociocultural psychology, and cultural studies, Fighting Words claims a middle ground between postmodern and materialist analyses.

Idealistically simple, built on utopian, solid principles..........2006-02-07
I enjoyed this quick read, it is comparable to Suzuki becoming Yoda, and teaching us to see through eyes that will save future generations through music. The truisms are often self-evident, but nice to be reminded of. I completely agree with the underlying emphasis of conscious though and passionate devotion as fodder for developing a musicality born of compassion and sensitivity not limited to the musical staff, but sprouted and spread to the scape of of ones entire lifestyle.
Light but fulfilling reading.......2003-12-20
This is very easy and light reading. It is a glimpse into the heart of the man who proved a good deal regarding education methods. The genuine feelings conveyed by Suzuki in this book refresh the soul...for parents and non-parents.
A must read for every parent!.......2003-02-22
I read this book thinking it would give me information about my son starting Suzuki violin. Instead, it spoke only briefly about music lessons, and quite a bit about parenting and nuturing children. I loved Sukuki's thoughts about how important it is to be a good role model for your child. So many parents forget this. This book is easy to read in a weekend. I have gone back to it numerous times. I recommend it to every parent.
Inspirational, although weaker than "Nurtured by Love".......2003-01-21
This book is similar in message to Suzuki's earlier book, "Nurtured by love". Suzuki-humanist and philosopher is more evident here than in that other book. Praise from the parent, developing child's concentration and setting fun tasks that can be accomplished are some of advises on rearing children. Suzuki strongly believes that the real education is at home and therefore advocates for parents' self-reflecting: you reap what you saw, therefore you should strive to be a fine person yourself to raise fine children.
As in "Nurtured by love", some of the life philosophy sounds a bit out of place: "act quickly on what you think", while an excellent advice, should have been tied in with the rest of the book. The same goes for other maxims, such as "do not cheat yourself". Both "Nurtured by Love" and "Ability Development" suffer from the lack of directed studies and critical analysis of much that Suzuki postulates. Intuitively though, his theories sound very appealing, while the great optimism and love for children shine through the imperfections of the books.
The book reads like a somewhat watered-down version of "Nurtured by Love", which I would recommend instead of this one.

Touching, a great learning trip for me as a Suzuki teacher and parent. Good to read again and again.

Now in 1963 a new force arose. Tigran Petrosian was a super subtle strategist who could make even an extra half a square tell in the balance. In this match , which finally broke Botvinnik's dominance for good, Botvinnik was cast in the role of impatient aggressor while the younger challenger eventually triumphed by a combination of extreme patience and the most exquisite endgame play ever witnessed at world championship level.
Bob Wade OBE, Britain's expert on Soviet chess, was ideally placed to comment on the games of this extraordinary contest and to delve into the preparation methods and psychology of both sides. Soviet Chess, his classic work on chess in the USSR, is a companion volume in this series.

petrosian beat botvinnik in moscow 1963 to become the 9th world chess champion. in this book international master bob wade annotates every game with great care and also takes into account the best soviet sources of information.for lovers of endings this book is a must-the fifth game -won by petrosian - is probably the most subtle endgame ever played in a world chess championship. i also very much liked the inclusion of training games played by botvinnik which otherwise might have been lost to chess history!

A solid introduction to OneNote 2003.......2007-03-14
Microsoft OneNote 2003 is a surprisingly rich application. And this entry in the Visusal QuickStart Guide series, which is typically above average, maintains the series' reputation. It is a concise, profusely illustrated guide to the basics of OneNote. Whether it delves deeply enough into the application might be a matter of individual opinion, but the book will certainly take you way past the starting the point.
Some of the directions are a bit too terse, but still get the point across.
The nicest part of the Visual QuickStart Guide series is that they are generally free of fluff and this one is no exception.
Overall, a pretty good introduction to Microsoft OneNote 2003.

This book is rather short but I guess that is by design. a Long book would not really be a QUICK start. It covered the basics though.
better than a Newton.......2005-01-24
OneNote might remind you of earlier efforts to make tablet PCs, or Apple's ill-fated Newton of ten years ago. Here, Microsoft is following a familiar pattern of waiting for a field to shake out and settle down, before introducing its product.
The book shows OneNote as having nice usability. Integrating the capture of handwritten notes with text and diagrams is pretty neat. No big surprises in innovation are revealed. The accessibility of the information that you store is also important, and well done. There are simple shortcuts, like opening the notebook at the last page you were looking at.
