    5 out of 5 stars Discussion of a cutting-edge concept.......1999-03-18

The Virtual Workplace was carefully reviewed and compiled by the editors. It discusses a wide range of topics on the virtual workforce. It provides a source of ideas through analytical, empirical, and case-based studies and helps in advancing the understanding of "the virtual workplace in relationship to the new computer and communication information technologies, people and organizations in the world" (preface). The text will undoubtedly provide discussion for professionals and students in business management and sociology.

Art and Innovation contributor Craig Harris writes that "[b]oth scientists and artists are converging ... in such issues as artificial life, teleprescences, and multimedia and immersive environments." But this connection is often overlooked, and as niche computer technologies become more standard, the groups may be becoming more entrenched and separate. Xerox PARC, now recognized as the hotbed of computer technology development in the latter half of the 20th century (and discussed in books such as Dealers of Lightning), took a new turn in the 1990s. Because of its interest in the "Office of the Future," Xerox paired Bay Area artists with its in-house team of computer scientists (as well as anthropologists, philosophers, linguists, interface designers, mathematicians, and cryptographers) and closely documented their discoveries. At the center of the PAIR Program's mission lies the future of digital media and the thesis that artists should be fundamentally involved with the development of these tools rather than just be consumers of them. Two more diverse and entrenched disciplines could hardly be found, and the surprising results are painstakingly detailed here.

Precursors to the 1990s incarnation of the artist-researcher pairing brought about technical innovations such as the first bitmapped graphics editor, a result of the combined efforts of a mathematician and a sculptor. The roughly half-dozen experiments conducted within the PAIR Project are discussed in detail in this book, including a chapter about work on LambdaMOO, the social virtual-reality site that seeks to transcend the Web's use as primarily an information provider. Another particularly strong section of the book, titled "Endless Beginnings," owes much to Jenny Holzer, with multiple lines of thought on one hypertext-based project wrapping through the pages.

While this book is limited by the need to present every speck of information (much like a conference paper), the ideas are substantive and worthy of consideration. Computer professionals working on the Web and in software development can read this notebook of ideas to facilitate their own expansive thinking beyond just the merits of clean code. --Jennifer Buckendorff

        Book Description

The idea behind Xerox's interdisciplinary Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) is simple: if you put creative people in a hothouse setting, innovation will naturally emerge. PARC's Artist-in-Residence Program (PAIR) brings artists who use new media to PARC and pairs them with researchers who often use the same media, though in different contexts. This is radically different from most corporate support of the arts, where there is little intersection between the disciplines. The result is both interesting art and new scientific innovations.

Art and Innovation explores the unique process that grew from this pairing of new media artists and scientists working at the frontier of developing technologies. In addition to discussing specific works created during several long-term residencies, the artists and researchers reveal the similarities and differences in their approaches and perspectives as they engage each other in a search for new methods for communication and creativity.

From the supplier: The Concord Career Institute in Kansas City decided to implement a multimedia center to provide for the technical research needs of its students. The needs and learning behaviors of the students were taken into consideration when constructing the Learning Resource Center as a library resource area. Most students at the institute do not learn in the traditional classroom setting, and they are tactile or visual learners, so the library needed to be designed accordingly. The library chose materials on CD-ROM, film and other software to coordinate with the technical curriculum of the college and the unique needs of its students. The media center is still changing and developing, but the feedback thus far has been positive.

                    Book Description

Distinguished professor John H. Schuh edits this critical look at the financial situation in higher education today. Contributors discuss seven specific issues concerning the financing of student affairs on contemporary college campuses and explore effective strategies student affairs professionals need to ensure that programs and services that serve students and other important stakeholders survive and thrive. Topics addressed include the differences in financing student affairs in public and in private institutions, as well as challenges in financing student unions and activities, health and counseling services, student housing and campus recreation.

Examining contemporary problems in selected areas of student affairs finance, this volume is one of several in this series on managing resources in student affairs. Others addressing related topics include Issue 89, The Role Student Aid Plays in Enrollment Management; Issue 92, Leadership and Management Issues for a New Century; Issue 96, Developing External Partnerships for Cost-Effective, Enhanced Services; and Issue 101, Planning and Achieving Successful Student Affairs Facilities Projects.

As state governmental support for public institutions continues to erode, student affairs units operating in the current financial environment have to be nimble and creative to sustain their viability. Drawing from his own twenty-seven year career as a student affairs practitioner and the contributions and research of leading student affairs professionals in the field, John Schuh provides an outstanding resource for student affairs professionals facing the serious financial challenges of today and tomorrow.

This is the 103rd issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Student Services.

                      Book Description

Market Reforms in Mexico examines Mexico's reform experience in privatization, deregulation, and environmental policy. More than simply a book on Mexican politics, this study speaks to the broader political dynamics behind the success or failure to implement reforms; first, by assessing new policy initiatives in multiple arenas across presidential administrations in Mexico, then by comparing Mexico's privatization experience to that of Argentina's. Through structured, focused comparison of select case studies, the author argues that the fate of dramatic reform initiatives turned on coalition politics (both inside and outside the state), and explains how institutional dynamics and the capacity to solve the problem of policy costs strongly affected reformers' prospects of success.

This book wasn't quite what I expected. For some reason, I expected little stories or anecdotes. (Maybe I've read too much Garrison Keillor or heard too much Paul Harvey.)

However, this book was 15 short chapters of quotations. Good quotations, but entirely quotations.

Thus, I'll summarize this way: if you like READER'S DIGEST's "Quotable Quotes" feature, you'll like this book; if you hate READER'S DIGEST's "Quotable Quotes" feature, you'll hate this book.

This book was written in 2003, and whereas it gives a pretty solid THEORETICAL overview of using ProTools in film, video and multimedia settings, and some historical background on audio/video synchronization, it is not at all useful for hands-on modern day applications. Personally, I have resorted to online / streaming instruction (or interactive DVD instruction) at any number of places on the web (search for pro tools tutorials).

This book was highly recommended to me by a Supervising Sound Editor and Mixer working in North Hollywood as the best book on Pro Tools. I would have to agree.
From the very, very basic, to the extremely detailed, it will cover just about anything you need.
I am a student currently studying Sound Editing, and I have recommended it to not only my peers, but also my instructors.
Stop thinking considering other books, buy this one.

I also highly recommend The Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound, by David Lewis Yewdall M.P.S.E.

5 out of 5 stars A practical and "user-friendly" introduction to Pro Tools.......2003-11-13

A practical and "user-friendly" introduction to Pro Tools, whether by itself or in conjunction with compatible softwares such as QuickTime, Pro Tools For Video, Film, And Multimedia by Ashley Shepherd is an excellent and very nicely organized guide to the features of Pro Tools software, including how to make optimal use of it when working on the phases of a multimedia soundtrack project. Meticulous and down-to-earth examples and suggestions make Pro Tools For Video, Film, And Multimedia a first-rate and highly recommended guide for music engineers making the transition into multimedia, as well as independent filmmakers doing their post-production in-house; web designers adding audio content to their web pages; musicians composing for film, TV, or the Internet.

                      5 out of 5 stars A must-have for budding recordists!.......2003-08-25

This is a terrific guide that covers all the basics of how to set up a ProTools audio system to for syncing and mixing to picture. Whether you're doing a soundtrack for a low-budget film, amateur DV video, or a big-budget TV show or feature film, there's a lot of information covered here. And it's much more thorough than the Digidesign manuals, and deals with "real world" situations that come up on a daily basis for anybody in the business.

The book is not intended for a ProTools novice -- you'll need to already have a reasonable grasp of all the basics before you dive into Shepherd's book -- but the information covered there is concise, to the point, and best of all, it's very current (at least as of Summer 2003).

I'd consider this book to be a must-have for anyone considering doing any mixing of sound effects, dialog, and/or music to video or film. Along with David Yewdall's excellent "Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound" (which covers a much broader scope of information), both books should be on the shelves of anybody in the movie/TV sound business. Highly recommended.

                        Book Description

"Most of the contributions strongly project the authors' perceptions of the role of race on their subjects, and essays should elicit lively discussions in the classroom."
                        —CHOICE

Frederick Douglass liked to say of West Indian boxer Peter Jackson that "Peter is doing a great deal with his fists to solve the Negro question." His comment reflects the possibilities for social transformation that he saw in the emerging modern sports culture. Indeed, as the twentieth century developed, sports have become an important cultural terrain over which various racial groups have contested, defined, and represented their racial, national, and inter-ethnic identities.

Sports Matters brings critical attention to the centrality of race within the politics and pleasures of the massive sports culture that developed in the U.S. during the past century and a half. The contributors collected here address such issues as popular representations of blacks in sports. They consider baseball—from Nisei players in Oregon to Mexican-Americans in Los Angeles. And they look at the use of warrior imagery in representations of Native American athletes and the evolution of black expressive style within basketball.

Sports Matters challenges our presumptions about sports, illuminating in the process the complexities of race and gender as they relate to popular culture.

Contributors include Amy Bass, John Bloom, Annie Gilbert Coleman, Gena Caponi, Montye Fuse, Randy Hanson, Michiko Hase, George Lipsitz, Keith Miller, Sharon O'Brien, Connie Razza, Sam Regalado, Greg Rodriguez, Julio Rodriguez, Michael Willard, and Henry Yu.

                            Book Description

The truth is, the database is the computer world's best-kept secret that everyone really knows about. Everyone knows about them because everyone uses them – from the little database you use to keep track of addresses and phone numbers on your computer to huge databases that banks use to house the financial information of millions of people. However, nobody talks about databases because they're so darned complicated to set up and use; quite frankly, nobody but the geeks who design and build them really know how they work!

How does this apply to you? Well, being a normal human being (translation: not a computer geek), you probably have work to do. In fact, you may have lots of work piled up precariously around your office. Someone, possibly your boss (or, if you work at home, your Significant Other), suggested that a database may help you get more organized, eliminate the piles, and generally make the safety inspector happy. Good advice, except for the fact that you, like most other people, don't know thing-one about setting up a database. And you have this program called Access 2002 on your computer that's supposed to do all that for you.

But how do you get started with Access 2002 and have it set up the kind of database you need? Well, you've come to the right place.

Written in plain, understandable English (try to find that in your typical software manual), Access 2002 For Dummies shows you how to make sense of that whole complicated database thing without boring you silly or turning you into a world-class computer geek. Here are just a few of the topics you'll find covered in Access 2002 For Dummies:

So no matter what you want to use your database for – whether it's to store inventory information, to feed information dynamically to a Web site, or simply to track your business contacts (so you can get rid of that drawer full of business cards) – you can find all the information you need in Access 2002 For Dummies.

3 out of 5 stars A good guide for beginners.......2006-05-12

This book would be good for beginners. This book, unfortunately, focuses too much on basic computer functions and doesn't give enough detail about building databases using Access. It is easy to read and follow, but entirely too basic for most users, especially those already familiar with Access and what it can do.

1 out of 5 stars Not useful at all.......2005-02-07

I normally like the Dummies series of books, but even for a Dummies book, this was just far too elementary. The first 65 pages (4 chapters) are a complete waste, as they are written for people who have never used a computer before. As a whole, this book only teaches you about 5-10% of what Access can do - both overall and on each of the very few topics that it does touch upon. There are constant annoying references to how "nerdy" any relevant information is. Instead of explaining this "nerdy" info in an easy to understand matter (which I thought was the point of a Dummies book), the author just mentions that it exists, makes a bad joke about it, and then ignores it and moves on.

The truth is, if you're going to learn about databases (which is what Access is all about), then you'd better be ready to get a little "nerdy". Just like if you're going to learn about fixing cars, you'd better show up wearing jeans and expect to get dirty, otherwise, what's the point?! The author spends 7 out of 10 words making very bad jokes and showing the user how to do mundane things like how to use the file menu and how to save your project than offering anything useful. Even if you are a brand new Access user, this book would be useless for you. The only reason anyone would give this book a good review is if they just don't know anything about Access or how to use windows or any computer. I'm still searching for a useful beginner-to-intermediate manual for Access 2002.

                            2 out of 5 stars Complicated.......2003-10-13

I bought this book because I've always been satisfied with the Dummies series. I consider myself fairly proficient with many of the MICROSOFT program (Word, Excel, Power Point), and I even took an Access class several years ago. With that in mind, I thought I'd have no problem picking up some of the basics of the program with the help of this book. Boy, was I wrong. The book is full "rules" in a list and directions that use vocabulary with which most new users of Access would be unfamiliar. I haven't finished it yet, but thus far, the author doesn't give you any opportunities to practice the information she's giving you. Any teacher knows that without doing something that you've been taught, you haven't really learned it. I remember years ago, even the manuals that came with the computers had exercises for readers to practice each newly taught skill. Here, in a book that's supposed to be teaching us a new and complex program, there are no opportunities to determine whether you've really understood a concept.
Besides this intrinsic flaw, another problem with the book is the author's continual cracking of corny jokes. I know it's supposed to entertain readers, but when you're confused and trying to figure out a concept in the chapter, those attempts at humor are just annoying.

Don't buy this book. I don't have another one to recommend, but I can save you from a useless purchase.

                            5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2003-06-21

Every time Microsoft upgrades Access, I upgrade my Dummies reference.

I started out with Access 2.0, never having used a database; Dummies for 2.0 taught me how to work inside the complex world of queries and reports that they used at that job site.

When I changed jobs, I had Access 97 on my desktop, and my job description was to automate all the functions of the facilties and telecomm departments using it. I bought Dummies for 97, and built and deployed the seven interlinked department databases that they're STILL using at my old company to run those departmental functions.

At my new job, once again, I'm automating all the office functions, only this time I'm setting up to capture data off the web, learning data access pages, etc. We have 2002 here.

It doesn't matter how complicated a problem it is, I can always find how to START solving it somewhere in the simple language of Access for Dummies. And since I'm also teaching other people to work from the ground up in Access, Dummies is an invaluable resource for them to sit down and read, in clear, simple language, how this beast is supposed to work.

I'd give this SIX starts if I could!

                            4 out of 5 stars Unbalanced.......2003-02-18

It is a "Dummies" book after all and you can't expect it to have lasting value after you've outgrown it. However, many key tasks are introduced but the books lack of depth will make you looking for more. It doesn't come with a CD-ROM which would have been helpful in following the examples. Even the Cheat Sheet at the beginning of the book is too sparse and pretty useless. Also, some exercises start off and seem to end abruptly probably due to the lack of screen captures and lack of detail.

The Dummies series lives on and this small desktop companion is a handy reference.
