Worthless filler, avoid this and consult the OOH.......2004-03-05

Avoid this book as if it is a chronic disease. I am reviewing the 1995 edition 1st edition, but I do not see how the 2nd edition can be much better. Do you ever remember in school being asked for an assignment where you have a minumum of say 500 words for the work? Well, this book brings back the memories of my schooling, trying to hit 500 words and I am finished at 300, so I go back adding words to lengthen the work when it really only needed 300 words to get my thesis conveyed. My advice is to consult the Occupational Outlook Handbook at your local library, it is dry but it gives better statistics and info. This work suggested no night careers I would be interested in, the interviews are not useful and this book could really be conveyed in much less space if all the filler and obvious information meant to fill space was cut out, I cannot help but speculate this author had a page limit imposed by her publisher!

No Shortcuts.......2000-04-20

I have been a master electrician and electrical contractor for 35 years. I'm very familiar with the 1996 NEC. Therefore, I was interested in just a listing of the changes for the 1999 NEC and hoped to avoid the stiff costs of a new code book. Well, I missed on both accounts. This book is of very little value since it primarily deals with the movement of article and section numbers within the 1999 code. It is worthless without being able to see the new configurations in the new 1999 NEC. I suppose it just goes to show that there are no shortcuts in the electrical business.

Do I Really Sound Like That?!.......2007-04-16

Reading this little book made me realize that I have become more of my father than I ever thought possible. All of the usual Dadisms are in the book...and if you don't think you're using them, try reading the book. This would make a great gift for Father's Day...funny and entertaining, but a little thought provoking at the same time.

A series worth every funny moment.......2005-07-04

If you think you're the only person whose dad said "Not under this roof, you're not" or "You're not going out in THAT!" then this series is going to broaden your horizons! Hilarious and pitch-perfect, it captures fathers' "wisdom" (if you can call it that) in true form. As a father myself, I cringe to realize I actually have said about half this stuff! Hamilton has created a marvelous little entertainment that perfect for families where dad has often put into words the kind of man he really is! Buy it for the dad in your life, and read it together.

With father's Day just around the corner, I have been keeping an eye out for something for my pop. I found the funniest book called, "Dad-isms." It was great reading through it and hearing all the things that used to come out of my own dad's mouth. The book tells you of a phrase you may have heard from your own, but what he really meant by the statement. One of my favorites was a phrase that went something like, "turn that racket down in there." But what he really meant was, "turn down your music, I can't hear the TV." And what about this warning, "Don't you ever let me catch you doing that again!" That simply meant, "you can do it, I just don't want to find out about it." It's hilarious.

This is a book by Freddie's personal assisant who lived right along side him. Almost as good as being there yourself. As far as a Freddie a biography this is at the top of the list along with Mercury and Me by Jim Hutton. It's good great pictures too. I highly recommend this book and I like to think of myself as a Freddie connoisseur. Can you ever really get enough Freddie stuff. I think not.

I do not care how you feel about Freddie or people who lived his lifestyle. THE BOOK IS TERRIBLE AND THE PICTURES ARE A JOKE. I could not even give this book away to the public library!

You can read better and more accurate material for free online. There are many fansites that have reproductions of interviews conducted with Freddie and the other Queen members. A year or so ago, a trade publication dedicated the entire magazine to Queen and I learn new information.

Take my advice and search the web for information and photographs, you will be glad you did.

a great account of life with Freddie Mercury.......2007-01-26

Peter Freestone was Freddie Mercury's personal assistant from 1979 until Freddie's death in 1991. In that time, Peter found himself in the midst of many interesting scenarios, many of which are chronicled in his book. Peter's detailed account of the layout of Garden Lodge (Freddie's palatial home in the Kensington section of London) is especially noteworthy. Peter went around the world with Freddie, experienced many tours, witnessed many recording sessions and video shoots, met many people who came and went in Freddie's life, and was even with Freddie during his declining years. One can tell his loyalty to Freddie was steadfast. Even though I favor Jim Hutton's book over all other books written about Freddie Mercury, this one still gets my stamp of approval, and I would still recommend it.

Most complete biography of Freddie Mercury that I've seen. It really takes you inside Freddie's world. After reading it, I almost felt like I knew him. A must have for any Queen fan.

A Very Interesting Look at Revolutionary Figures.......2005-06-05

Lunacharsky writes about his fellow revolutionaries in this book. It's very refreshing to get a first person perspective on Lenine, Trotsky, Zinoviev, Plekhanov, Sverdlov, Volodarsky, Uritsky, Bessalko and Martov. Isac Deutscher, who wrote the introduction and I think the ending notes of each sketch, did a fantastic job simplifying what Lunacharsky has to say and also adding little facts about each person's life.

Genna Sosonko left the then Soviet Union and settled in Holland in 1972. He was chess trainer who developed into a world class Grandmaster AFTER arriving in Holland. Rising through the Soviet training system until he left, and having served as seconds to Tal and Kortchnoi, he offers a unique view into the world of Soviet chess. This is a book about people; the human side of top flight chess. The chapters were all originally published in the magazine New in Chess, of which Sosonko is now an editor. There are NO GAMES, NO ANALYSIS, and NO DIAGRAMS. It is a book which would most interest serious chess fans who are familiar with the people Sosonko writes about. It is a bit gossipy but also quite poignant. Great world champions are profiled. Mikhail Tal, his phenomenal talent and his love of chess and the many problems he had after his championship year: alcoholism, drug abuse, illness, and personal issues. Mikhail Botvinnik, his single determination and analytic style, and his opinion of his successors and pupils such as Karpov and Kasparov. But it is the profiles of the people behind the scenes - important trainers and coaches such as Vladimir Zak (Spassky, Kortchnoi), Semyon Furman(Karpov), and Alexander Koblenz (Tal)which are most interesting. This is a fascinating work for those who are curious about the people who played so many great games of chess. Episodic and a bit uneven at times, and on ocassion awkward in language, it is nonetheless a fascinating narrative. It is not an academic history - so crucial dates and places may or may not be spelled out. It is a like a long conversation with someone who was an 'insider' in that world, who is now relating to you the stories and recollections. Highly recommended but only to the serious chess fan - those seeking practical help with play should look elsewhere.

Who says you can't judge a book by it's cover?.......2006-03-11

I gave this book 5 stars, but what do I know? I just bought the book because I was feeling impulsive, and it had such a pretty cover. But I will say one thing, the cover of the book is reeeealy pretty!

This is a grest product and is very easy to use. I was able to learn the things I needed from it and learned somethings I didn't even know existed.

Excellent & comprehensive guide.......2005-03-09

I tutor students in the use of Excel, and I have found that this Bible is worth every penny.

Walkenbach takes you into every nitty gritty detail, so that you can devise a fairly sophisticated lesson plan for those students who want to take their software know-how to a higher level.

His Bible really lives up to its name. I recommend this book for basic to intermediate classes.

Its only flaws? It weighs a ton. You can give yourself a hernia hefting this tome around!

And it is costly. However, I would argue that if you buy this book, you won't have to buy half a dozen other books, because almost everything you need is here.

The Best Excel Book.......2003-01-25

This is a great book! It is complete and comprehensive. I refer to it all the time when I work on Excel spreadsheets. I recommend it highly!

Not a bible, more like a quick review.......2002-04-10

Having used Excel for a number of years and various other Excel guides, I have been disappointed each time I have tried to use this book.

The worst feature? The index. Any reference book should be able to point you to where you want to go, but with only one description of most functions -- and you have to guess at which word the author will choose to pick for the index -- you're often spending more time trying to figure out the "bible" than you would if you were just fiddling with Excel on your own.

So if you're looking for a guidebook for Excel, my opinion is to find a different book, perhaps one of the Que "Special Edition" series instead.
