One of those defining Avengers moments.......2007-05-12
WOW!
Baron Zemo reforms the Masters of Evil -- gathering a team that outnumbers and outguns its predecessors -- and coordinates an attack on Captain America and The Avengers in an attempt to break their spirits. Left in their devastating wake are a tortured Jarvis and a battered, broken and comatose Hercules.
Roger Stern scripts a groundbreaking story, showing just how ruthless evil can be, and John Buscema and Tom Palmer masterfully illustrate it. It's obvious to me that these creative minds have inspired many of today's talents.
DC comic lovers, drop your five issues of Batman and Superman and experience Marvel at its best in this trade paper back. Marvelites, you know you have to pick this bad boy up. Fans of the subversive styles of The Authority, Thunderbolts and Rising Stars, read where these subversive styles all started. Under Seige is a must have for all.
GOOD AVENGERS STORYLINE.......2005-01-28
This Trade paperback collects Avengers issues (gasp) 270 - 277 (minus 272) of the original Avengers run, volume 1 from the mid-1980's. Scripted by Roger Stern and with art by the ever reliable John Buscema and Tom Palmer, the Masters of Evil led by Baron Zemo actually manage to defeat the Avengers and take over the Avengers mansion itself. The Team at that time was a relatively weaker group that included Captain America, the Wasp, the Black Knight, Hercules, and Captain Marvel II (the black female version) with Thor as an occasional guest star.
The Masters of Evil were always a fun group of villians. Really a throwback to 1960's silver-age era baddies. Bad but not exactly evil per se. They hust always seemed to have a jones-on for the Avengers. A fun storyline with out having the endless plot threads that infect so many modern day comics. Good read and solid if unspectacular art.
Truly, Marvel's finest.......2004-05-26
I'd been reading the Avengers on and off for about 2 years and had been a Marvel fan for most of my life. I bought this on a whim, thinking to update on some Avenger's history. I was truly amazed at what I got.
While the art wasn't the great stuff we get in todays comics, it was decent enough. What was really worth it, though, was the storyline. Bringing together a group of tough super-villains and resurrecting an old idea (that of the "master of evil"), the story proved to be quite worth my time.
Showing some of the all time best Avengers, including Thor, Captain America and Hercules, the battles were truly unforgettable. While there isn't any single thing that makes it truly spectacular, the whole story is well-rounded, enticing and fast-paced, easily accessbile and understandable. It's something that once you pick up, you can't put down. It's well-worth what its charged for.
One of the most memorable episode in the Avengers' past!.......2004-02-18
"Avengers: Under Siege" is arguably one of the most memorable storylines in the Avengers' long history. Granted, it does not have the scope of the classic cosmic tales like "Kree-Skrull War" and "Celestial Madonna". In fact, the whole work feels a little too "earthy" and the action is mainly limited to one place - Avengers Mansion. But what ACTION it is! The Masters of Evil, in their most powerful incarnation EVER, invades Avengers Mansion and takes over it!
Roger Stern is a solid Marvel writer in the 1980s under the editorship of Jim Shooter. We rarely see such dependable work-horse comic-writers today. "Under Siege" remains one of Sterns greatest writings (along with his work on Dr. Strange). There is an almost effortless feel to the way Stern seems to nail down the characterization of all the characters (most notably on the second-stringers like Black Knight, Hercules, Wasp, etc.) John Buscema and Tom Palmer provides the art. The art really shines in the last chapter when the heavyweights like Thor and Captain America join the fray to reclaim Avengers Mansion. We see the restrain and control in Buscema's powerful art - Thor vs. Goliath, Cap vs. Wrecker and finally Cap vs. Baron Zemo. A lesser artist, thinking he's the next-Kirby, would have drawn the whole thing in a loose, in-your-face, full page splash, zero storytelling style. But not Buscema and Palmer. See their art here and you'll know why Buscema was THE Marvel artist of the 1970s and 80s.
The Best Avengers Story Ever!.......2002-05-26
If you want to see a tale where the Avengers come close to the edge of existance...this one's a keeper! It has everything from Captain America under attack by some great classic villians to the all the Avengers doubting their chances of ever coming out alive from this attack! The art by Buscema is what drives the story right along at a breakneck pace. It's a must have of any classic Marvel fan

EXCELLANT READ.......2006-08-16
This is an excellant book for beginners to advanced users and a great source for reference.
In regards to the previous comment, I know for a fact that author owns the software and has plenty of experience in the real world than most authors in this field. (Just check out the "About the Author" section.) It would be impossible to list ALL possible schenarios for ONE version of the software without having to make a BIBLE.
A good buy all and all.
RTFM - really.......2006-03-07
What a waste of money. If you own Cubase SX/SL 3, you already possess a book that is 10X more concise than this one: it's called the USER'S MANUAL.
I made the mistake of purchasing this book *thinking* that I was getting a "power users" type of read that would give me an opportunity to learn the way pros use Cubase SX 3's many, many features. Mopre than anything, I was *hoping* that some wise soul could shed some bright light on a lot of the gray areas for me and show me how I could employ features to achieve my musical objectives - or at least get me pointed in the right direction...
I couldn't have been more wrong.
This book blows. There's no other way to say it. The author's writing style makes me picture him at his desk with the Cubase manual open, pecking away, re-crafting the Cubase manual in his own words. From cover to cover all this guy does tell you about features. *Rarely does he ever tell you *why* you would use one feature over another; and *rarely* does he ever tell you of the popular ways to employ these features. he uses the same cop out every other inept technical writer does, "There are far too many applications to ever cover them all here so i will just make you aware of the options."
Pish.
Someone needs to step up and take some risks. Most technical books are like this. Someone needs to write a Cubase book that actually covers REAL WORLD applications of these features. Step by step. process by process. Mistake by mistake. This is not the book that does this.
This book is a reference manual written by a guy who I truly believe probably doesn't even OWN Cubase.
Cubase users are serious about their craft. they don't want "For Dummies" books like this. They want to be SCHOOLED!! School m e ! I'm ready. I'm sick and tired of these lazy, no substance having books filling up my trash can.
Ok, maybe you can;'t have it all in one book. But can you at least have a FEW unique take-aways that you can't learn anywhere else?
Do NOT buy this crappy book. Read the manual. It's a FAR BETTER read.
Cubes Power.......2005-10-17
Nice text for learning the in and outs of Cubase. I mainly use it as a reference, and find it very useful.

That's the Joint!: The Hip-Hop Studies Reader
ASIN: 0631212647 |
Book Description
Key Terms in Popular Music and Culture presents eighteen original essays by leading scholars in the field of popular music studies. Each essay - drawing widely on work in feminist, postcolonial, and cultural studies and the disciplines of musicology and literary criticism - maps the competing perspectives on one of the key terms in ongoing debates on the meaning of popular music and culture, discusses the history of continuities and conflicts in its meaning, and presents the writer's own views on its meaning and how he or she has come to adopt such a position. These essays combine to form a valuable overview of the state of popular music discourse at the end of the twentieth century. They will prove invaluable both to those new to the study of popular music and those already well-versed in popular music and cultural studies.

Review of This Book from Choice.......2000-12-03
The editors of this volume have isolated concepts and terms widely used in contemporary discourse on popular music and have assigned authors to an essay intended to explore the intellectual history of the term, examine a range of the term's uses in popular- music studies, and provide examples and case studies. Some essays-for example Paul Théberge's "Technology," Richard Middleton's "Form," David Sanjek's "Institutions," and Sara Cohen's "Scenes"-accomplish this admirably and more than make this volume worth reading. A few, however, hew a little too closely to the author's own research projects and may be of less general interest. Clearly indebted for inspiration to Raymond Williams's Keywords (CH, Jun'76; rev. ed., 1983) and less encyclopedic than Key Concepts in Communication and Cultural Studies by Tim O'Sullivan et al. (2nd ed., 1994,), this collection attempts to introduce readers to a complex cultural studies terminology that is increasingly central to academic discourse in popular-music studies and more generally Important in the humanities and social sciences. The book features an excellent roster of authors and will make a valuable companion to popular-music studies, histories, and surveys. large collections at all levels.-G. Averill, New York University

Hardening Linux
ASIN: 0596003919 |
Book Description
Computer security is an ongoing process, a relentless contest between system administrators and intruders. A good administrator needs to stay one step ahead of any adversaries, which often involves a continuing process of education. If you're grounded in the basics of security, however, you won't necessarily want a complete treatise on the subject each time you pick up a book. Sometimes you want to get straight to the point. That's exactly what the new Linux Security Cookbook does. Rather than provide a total security solution for Linux computers, the authors present a series of easy-to-follow recipes--short, focused pieces of code that administrators can use to improve security and perform common tasks securely. The Linux Security Cookbook includes real solutions to a wide range of targeted problems, such as sending encrypted email within Emacs, restricting access to network services at particular times of day, firewalling a webserver, preventing IP spoofing, setting up key-based SSH authentication, and much more. With over 150 ready-to-use scripts and configuration files, this unique book helps administrators secure their systems without having to look up specific syntax. The book begins with recipes devised to establish a secure system, then moves on to secure day-to-day practices, and concludes with techniques to help your system stay secure. Some of the "recipes" you'll find in this book are:
- Controlling access to your system from firewalls down to individual services, using iptables, ipchains, xinetd, inetd, and more
- Monitoring your network with tcpdump, dsniff, netstat, and other tools
- Protecting network connections with Secure Shell (SSH) and stunnel
- Safeguarding email sessions with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
- Encrypting files and email messages with GnuPG
- Probing your own security with password crackers, nmap, and handy scripts
This cookbook's proven techniques are derived from hard-won experience. Whether you're responsible for security on a home Linux system or for a large corporation, or somewhere in between, you'll find valuable, to-the-point, practical recipes for dealing with everyday security issues. This book is a system saver.
Customer Reviews:
Pensacola LUG review book.......2004-04-15
The Linux Security Cookbook is a good hands-on guide to the major aspects of securing your Linux box. This book offers many quick reference guides to pieces of software for securing or testing your system and goes through many different means of fortifying your box including:
-controlling system access with firewalls
-monitoring your network
-using SSH and SSL
-intrusion detection systems
-authentication and cryptographic keys
-encrypting files and email messages
-system security probing
The recipes in this book allows administrators to learn quick and easy ways to secure their systems including over 150 ready-to-use scripts and configuration files without having to look up or research specific syntax.
This book is definitely a quick hands-on guide to securing and monitoring your system and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good source of guides and ready-to-use scripts and configurations.
Excellent resource on Linux security.......2003-12-09
At fewer than 300 pages, the initial size of the Linux Security Cookbook may seem to be meager to cover such a broad subject. But what the book lacks in size, it makes up in content.
While many security books may waste the reader's time by spending hundreds of pages on introductory subjects; chapter 1 of the Linux Security Cookbook goes straight into using and configuring Tripwire.
The book then goes into fundamental topics such as firewalling with iptables/ipchains, authentication, access control, file control, email security and more.
If you are interested in Linux security, this is a well-written and well-organized book, filled with valuable and timely information.
Good book for quick reference..........2003-08-29
I read this book from cover to cover and consider it a great effort by the authors to cover many security issues related to not just Linux, but most *nix operating systems. Here's a chapter by chapter review of what I've observed in the book:
Chapter 1 - System Snapshots with Tripwire
I liked the discussion of Tripwire and its configuration options. The sections on "Ultra-Paranoid Integrity Checking" were great! A decent introduction to Tripwire and some of its features.
Chapter 2 - Firewalls with iptables and ipchains
The difference between "Drop versus Reject" targets was good. So many books have info on iptables, but none discusses these issues. Also the point made about dropping ICMP messages was good. Quick to learn and implement recipes presented in this chapter.
Chapter 3 - Restricting Access by Remote Users
Recipe 3.7 was very neat. Allowing users to access a service only by port-forwarding over ssh allows the administrator to restrict access by user names. A smart way of imposing restrictions!
Also, in recipe 3.9, I liked the authors' approach to finding if xinetd is compiled with libwrap support.
All recipes regarding tweaking xinetd were good. It isn't always possible to look at all the configurable options with xinetd, and the authors did a good job in mentioning a few useful options.
Chapter 4 - Authentication Techniques and Infrastructures
Quick tips with PAM, openssl and kerberos. I couldnt get some of the recipes to work on my machine, but got most openssl stuff to work.
Chapter 5 - Authorization Controls
I liked this chapter the best. The discussion on sudo was enlightening, and I was able to effectively tweak most recipes to my needs. The man page would never have provided me with such a good explanation. Thanks to the authors for this chapter.
Chapter 6 - Protecting Outgoing Network Connections
Two of these authors had written the snail book and I expected nothing less than a very useful recipe session on SSH. The most useful recipe here was setting up public key authentication between an openssh client and an ssh.com server and vice-versa. I had always wanted to do this but didnt have a clue until I read these recipes. All recipes have strong technical content and are well written. The recipe on running cron jobs with ssh was
amazing. The authors teach how to be creative, rather than merely
explaining facts and methodologies.
Chapter 7 - Protecting Files
I liked all recipes on GnuPG especially neat hacks like maintaining encrypted files with vim, encrypting backups etc..
Chapter 8 - Protecting Email
I tried out a few recipes and got them to work with my configuration. Pretty impressive stuff! The difference between SSL and STARTTLS daemons was very well explained. I havent seen a consolidated discussion on this topic thus far and was really happy to see things explained clearly in just one sidebar. I couldn't get the imap/ssl recipe working for my settings, inspite of spending quite some time. Perhaps a few screen-shots
made available via the website would've been of greatest help..
Chapter 9 - Testing and Monitoring
Recipes on Cracklib, using find for setuid/setgid files and the discussion on the 'find' command are very well written. Though this stuff has been mentioned in most security books/magazines, a consolidated treatment here is nice to note. nmap truly deserved the long section and I was able to learn a few facts I didnt know about nmap until now. The recipe on examining local network activities covered the best tools in business -
netstat, lsof and rpcinfo. Sniffing network traffic, using tcpdump, ethereal and dsniff provide a good refresher and ready-to-use recipes.
Overall, Linux Security Cookbook is a very useful book for quick
reference. It covers a wide range of security topics and issues related to not just Linux but most Unices. The recipes provided here are well written and ready to use. I have found many tips related to sudo, SSH, xinetd, encryption and network security extremely useful. Full credit to the authors for bringing out such a comprehensive book on Linux Security.
Not up to par.......2003-07-29
I've been reading "Linux Security Cookbook". I fully understand the goal of this book is to provide lots of little bits of wisdom, not a full fledged security book. I think that's pretty cool. However I'm finding that a lot of the recipies, if you will, are either not well explained, the equivalent of reading a real cookbook witohut knowing what it means ot 'fold the blueberries into the batter'. They could easily have spent more time explaining things so we didn't need to go read/re-reading the man pages just to understand the book.
Worth it.......2003-07-28
A very cool collection of recipes for common, daily, security of Linux
systems. Some of the other reviewers missed the point...this book
doesn't try to be the ultimate self-contained security book, it's a
collection of one-off recipes...it even says so on page 1. Look at
O'Reilly's other cookbooks (the awesome Perl Cookbook, Javascript
Cookbook, etc)--they aren't meant to be comprehensive or teach you
everything about the subject, they assume you know the basics already
and show you specific solutions to specific problems. This cookbook
does the same thing with Linux security, and I think it succeeds...it
sure helped me with my firewall and with gpg encryption. This
shouldn't be the only security book you own but it's great for what it
is.

Very Useful.......2004-12-14
It is practically impossible to find a good book with hands-on approach on information security. This book is one of the few that will show you HOW-TO secure your system and not just why you should do this! Also, security forensics chapter is my favorite... I recommend this book for anybody who is interested in UNIX and wants to know what could be done to protect the box using only OS bundled capabilities. As a security administrator for a company on a budget I get used to only rely on freeware or open-source tools to protect the enterprise. This book showed me that it is possible to use only out of the box solutions to achieve the same results! I would recommend it for everybody who is prohibited to use freeware and open-source tools for information security. Great book!
Tons of practical information!.......2004-12-13
This book is one of the best I've read about UNIX security. Dr. Loza provides hundreds of hands-on, practical solutions for how to investigate suspicious hackers' activities, secure the system, or protect you on the Internet by using only "native" UNIX capabilities. This book is very unique in the approach that shows you how one can do absolutely the same things to secure your UNIX box that freeware or open-source tools offer - if you are creative and hove some scripting skills. Using freeware and open-source applications is prohibited in many companies. This is why this book is absolutely the best! Especially I loved the Forensics chapter. Once again, I would recommend this book for all hackers and system administrators alike!
