Customer Reviews:
Great book - practical, thorough guide to interviewing.......1998-02-28
This is a well-written book which not only lays out and explains the non-discrimination laws impacting the employment selection process but gives helpful examples and Q&A to common questions. Brief, straightforward; must reading for professionals involved recruiting and hiring. Great introductory resource; attorneys may want additional depth, but this provides a good starting point.

It's tough to categorize Sandra Bernhard's book of semi-autobiography, philosophy, and quasifactual showbiz gossip. The book partly overlaps with her stage show and CD I'm Still Here Damn It! but it reads like the diary of a sensitive soul with a teensy mean streak. "Barbra Streisand won't let you photograph the right side of her face.... If we finally see it, are we just going to scream?" Bernhard writes. "Kris Kristofferson must have been nipping at the bottle during A Star Is Born to fake the hots for Barbra." The title is simply what her drunk housepainter begged of her one day. ("Everybody used him--Melanie, Cindy, Candy, Caroline, Mimi," writes Bernhard, unconsciously echoing her appearance in Bret Easton Ellis's novel Glamorama: "The whole gang is usually there. Cindy, Linda, Kate, the Sandras--Bullock, Bernhard, and Gallin.") She devotes many pages to literary air kisses at stars: the chapter titled "Barry White for McDonald's" consists of one sentence: "I was a vegetarian until I heard Barry's sexy ad." Bernhard confesses her biggest alleged regret (losing a thank-you note from Jacqueline Kennedy and a letter of apology from Jerry Lewis for making fun of her lips on the set of The King of Comedy) and pens tender odes to Brenda Vaccaro and Kurt Cobain, a script idea for Pam Grier, and poems with more vigorous rhythms than Jewel's: "I was always shy, never knew how to relate / But when I get behind a cocktail I leave everything to fate." Bernhard's book is slight, but highly original. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
Fragile, raw, daring, brilliant...Sandra Bernhard rocks. The actress, philospher, comedian, and cult goddess is definitely back -- and feeling fabulous -- with a labor of love that'll knock her followers off their feet and draw new ones to her like a magnet.
Stage, film, music, television -- in every performance, Bernhard has shocked and amused, titillated and broken every rule. With her first two books, Confessions of a Pretty Lady and Love, Love, and Love Bernhard's electrifying talent took to the page and burned it up with flashes of true brillance -- the kind of writing that separates the powerful from the good. And now, in this new book, Sandra returns with a deeply personal collection of spicy tales, fiercely witty riffs, and sweet doses of wisdom.
Here is Sandy as we know and love her -- and as we've never quite seen her before: heartrenderingly honest, with the mouth of a diva, the soul of a fighter, and the insight of a girl who has lived life big. Like a whisper in your ear, Sandy opens up her world: from her friendship with her loyal housepainter to her imagined history as as one of Jack Kennedy's lovers; from the sensual streets of Mogador to the comfort of her pristine L.A. bungalow; from her own poetry of romantic yearning and reflective prayer to dead-on truths brought to light in the heartbreaking and hilarious glow of fashion, celebrity, rock and spirituality.
There is nothing Sandra Bernhard offers that doesn't deliver a pungent snap of truth and the surprise of unexpected emotion in this, her most revealing and entertaining book yet.
Fragile, raw, daring, brilliant...Sandra Bernhard rocks. The actress, philospher, comedian, and cult goddess is definitely back -- and feeling fabulous -- with a labor of love that'll knock her followers off their feet and draw new ones to her like a magnet.

Unique Celebrity.......2000-06-18
Sandra Bernhard stands on her own. She is different, outspoken, and unafraid to be that way. That's why I love her.
This book is like an edgy "Chicken Soup for the soul" by Sandra. Some parts are hilarious--her incident with Oprah; some are touching--her views on love.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants a laugh and a unique perspective.
A pretty lady writes a pretty good book.......2000-02-22
Sandra Bernhard doesn't have that good a reputation in the real world (by the "real world" I mean the world outside my own), but I swear to God that this pretty lady is smart--very smart. "May I Kiss You on the Lips Miss Sandra" is proof. It is well written and very, very funny. It is the kind of book you don't want to read in public because you will laugh out loud and look like a total nimrod. Sandra writes like she performs: with energy, style and the ability to choose the perfect word that will leave you laughing for days.
She has proven that being bitter can be...well...FUN........1999-08-13
Head for the couch and relax; make a big mug of any tisane or coffee; put on some wallpaper CD and get ready to laugh and to cry and yes! purge your emotions. Sandra Bernhard has once again taken an honest look at the world and embraced what is really cool and really good, and damned to hell what is really bad and itchy. Her book is like a stream of conciousness that just doesn't let up. Each time I finish something by her; be it a book; or a CD; a movie; and especially a date with her at the theatre ... I leave saying: "Now why can't I have friends like that in my world?" "Am I the only one who pays attention anymore?" All the best Miss Sandra; I wish you were one of my best friends. Bravo Dahhhling!
Wild, Funny, Original, Uninhibited & Fresh like Sandra!.......1999-05-26
I got this book as a gift and I loved it! Sandra's writing was daring like a drunken cowgrrl riding bareback backwards in a purple vinyl catsuit! Fun and unpredictable!
More genius from Sandra Bernhard.......1998-12-01
She returns to discuss all the subjects that really matter: love, life and Stevie Nicks, who pops up in three different vignettes. With some material culled from her recent show "I'm Still Here Damn It" (The remarkable "Jazzy Spider" and "Courtney Love") and mostly new material, Sandy has one of her finest literary moments. (Don't miss her accompanying CD, "I'm Still Here Damn It")
Book Description
For more than three decades, Bruce Springsteen's ability to express in words and music the deepest hopes, fears, loves, and sorrows of average Americans has made him a hero to his millions of devoted fans. Racing in the Street is the first comprehensive collection of writings about Springsteen, featuring the most insightful, revealing, famous, and infamous articles, interviews, reviews, and other writings. This nostalgic journey through the career of a rock-'n'-roll legend chronicles every album and each stage of Springsteen's career. It's all hereDave Marsh's Rolling Stone review of Springsteen's ten sold-out Bottom Line shows in 1975 in New York City, Jay Cocks's and Maureen Orth's dueling Time and Newsweek cover stories, George Will's gross misinterpretation of Springsteen's message on his Born in the USA tour, and Will Percy's 1999 interview for Double Take, plus much, much more.

Good Overview Of Writings On Springsteen.......2006-04-25
I really enjoyed the majority of the pieces in June Skinner Sawyers' Racing In The Street: The Bruce Springsteen Reader. Highlights for me include Martin Scorese's (brief) foreward (always figured he was a fan) and, of all things, the excerpts from one Kevin Major's young adult novel Dear Bruce Springsteen, in which my favorite passage in the collection occurs:
"I knew he [the young narrator's father] was into your music a lot. He never listened to it much in the house, mostly when he was driving the old van we used to have. Mostly then by himself. The four of us were in the van once and he put on Nebraska. Mom made him take it off because, she said, it sounded too depressing. He sort of grunted something about she didn't know what good music was and popped out the tape. She said if you're going to spend money we can't afford on music, then you might as well spend it on something that'll cheer you up. He ignored her."
Now tell me - is there a Bruce fan alive that can't relate to that?
Though I would have liked to have seen Tama Janowitz' "You And The Boss" and Richard Meltzer's "The Meaning of Bruce" (both collected in Clinton Heylin's Penguin Book Of Rock & Roll Writing, if you're interested) included for balance, this is a solid anthology of writings on Bruce, and recommended if you're a fan.
PS Also recommended if you're a fan of great music writing (or great writing, period): Lester Bangs' Psychotic Reactions And Carburetor Dung and Mainlines, Blood Feasts, And Bad Taste.
Racing Is A Great Boss Bio Plus..........2006-02-22
Racing In The Street is not so much a great biography about Bruce.
It goes much deeper.
It is a series of very insightful articles pinpointing the appeal Bruce has for so many of his fans.
He is a mega star but it is his struggle to remain normal and humble that is at the heart of this book.
For the casual fan, If you truly want to know why his fans are so intense, this is the book to read.
For his fans that have always tried to figure out why we are so intense, this book puts all that into perspective better than any other.
Highly recommended.
Great book for any Bruce fan!!!.......2005-06-28
This book provides wonderful, informative articles that offer various perceptions of the Boss and his 30+ year career!!! I learned so much about how other people see Bruce, and gained knowledge about his life and work, which was very enjoyable. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves the Boss and wants to gain more insight into his long and amazing career. The maps, discography, timeline, and other extras were also brilliant additions to the collection!
Great bio of the boss!.......2005-02-06
Racing in the Street is a great book and a must for every Springsteen fan.
Good, Diverse Collection.......2004-05-11
How many people do you know who like Bruce Springsteen? If you're like me, probably not very many. Most people cite their dislike of his voice, or find him to be too intense, or don't find his melodies to be that memorable. That's fine- that's their loss after all- but it's not necessarily congruent with the critical praise steeped upon Springsteen. I've always known that Bruce has been a longtime critical darling for Rolling Stone- he doesn't get as much coverage nowdays (he doesn't do that much nowdays to warrant coverage), but back in the 70s and 80s, Bruce could absolutely do no wrong, and was voted "artist of the year" an unprecedented number of times in the mid 80s. Those writings are collected in the Rolling Stone Files anthology, to which this book is an essential companion. If anything, this book has more substance than the RS book, since many of its selections place Bruce's music in its social context. While I know that Bruce is a wonderful guy, I'm not terribly interested in reading about endless fawning over him or how great he is in concert- I know that or else I wouldn't be seeking out written material about him. There's certainly some element to that in this book, but many of the articles are well-written reflections on the meaning of his music and on the social and political influences that inspire and shape it. My favorite is the Lester Bangs review of early Bruce- the music seems to have knocked this rather pretentious (but wonderful) critic down a few notches closer to earth. I also enjoy some of the ficiton writings that contain prominent mentions of Springsteen's music. So for some well-written but well-grounded commentary and reflections on Springsteen's music and the society that inspired him, "Racing in the Street" is an excellent, highly readable anthology that doesn't numb you with syrupy praise but also doesn't burn you out with cynicism and lofty music criticism.

The Blair Witch Project: The Official Internet Companion
ASIN: 0609806459
Release Date: 2000-09-12 |
Book Description
Inspired by the film that became a cultural phenomenon,
Beyond Blair Witch delves deeper into the vein of scary lore and legend, with historic tales from around the country.
The film
The Blair Witch Project was born from a great idea, shot on a virtually nonexistent budget, marketed through the digital campfire we huddle around today, and released to scare us with a tale of things that lurk out of sight.
Intended to appeal to the film's die-hard fans as well as to those who are fascinated by the reasons for its unlikely success,
Beyond Blair Witch goes just where its title suggests, beyond the hype and the fictional story of the original film.
Beyond Blair Witch takes the film's premise a step further, presenting fifteen tales whose folkloric and historic roots are firmly embedded in the American landscape, from the Carlisle Witch and the Denton Vampires to the Civil War soldier who still reaches out to touch the citizens of the same Burkittsville, Maryland, that is the setting for the film. Each tale explores a specific facet of the Blair Witch legend -- from stickmen to shunning -- all re-creating the rich tapestry of oral history that inspired
The Blair Witch Project.

Incredibly boring book that takes advantage of the blair witch popularity. the burkittsville part is last and of course the shortest part of the book.

If you really want to get the most out of this book listen to the following BLACK SABBATH albums while reading it: First Album (1970), "Heaven & Hell" (80) and "Mob Rules" (81). Those last two CDs go great with chapters 4 ("the Knowing") and 5 ("the witch danced"). Songs like "Black Sabbath", "the wizzard", "beyond the wall of sleep", "NIB", "evil woman", children of the sea", "Lady Evil", "Heaven & Hell", "voodoo", "sign of the southern cross", "country girl" and "falling off the edge of the world" make incredible background music for folklore such as "Carlisle witch", "children of stone", "stones returning", "witch child" and "Bedlem witch".

Customer Reviews:
Best user guide available, but not the best it could be.......2005-01-24
Due to company mergers I was switched from Microsoft Outlook 2000 to Lotus Notes 6.5. For those who've never used Notes let me assure you it's nothing like any other email client, and if you've ever heard anyone complain about Notes they were probably justified. I compared this and three other books on Notes: How to Use Lotus Notes R6, Using Lotus Notes and Domino 6, and Lotus Notes 6 for Dummies. I thought this book was the best for someone like me, needing to use Notes for email, contacts, and calendaring, but not too much database "collaboration" or programming.
This book is a no-frills, concise overview of major Notes features with lots of step-by-step how-tos on common tasks. It isn't really well-suited for someone who's not comfortable using a computer because it packs a lot of info on every page without unnecessary filler, has fewer screen shots than other books, and it's entirely black and white--this book is more for people who're comfortable "messing around" with Notes to get used to it and provides pointers to places where things are kind of obscured in Notes.
I've used many email clients and I work with computers for a living, but after fiddling with Notes for a few days there are still some things I just can't get a grip on like Replicating (sort of like Synchronizing in Outlook) and Archiving (very loosely related to PST files in Outlook), and there are many preferences/settings that aren't easy to find, or find again later, without the help of a book like this. This book is great to get you started without having to wade through the amusing rhetoric and diatribe of a Dummies book or the extraneous programming sections of a more comprehensive guide.
Unfortunately neither this book nor any of the others I looked at completely explained how to do some things in Notes that were very easy in Outlook like synchronizing to disk so you can work with email while offline, and saving email to disk so you can go back and read/reply much later. This and the other books simply said "it's a good idea to delete email you no longer need so it doesn't clutter up your Inbox." This makes no sense to someone who's used to saving every single email in offline folders. It definitely isn't a "guide to Notes for Outlook users."
If you're new to Notes but not a timid user of computers and email this book will help get you started quickly and later serve to remind you of things Notes puts in odd places. If you've used Notes before but are new to R6 or 6.5, this book may give you some useful info on new features but it may not clearly differentiate them. If you want the most info with the minimum to read (or pay!), this is the ticket. In any case if you're trying to figure out how to make Notes synchronize and archive email like Outlook, this book mentions those things but since they're somewhat foreign concepts in Notes you won't get the detail you're looking for, if it even exists!
