Book Description
Privatization South American Style focuses on the politics of privatization in Argentina, Brazil, and Peru. It examines both the micro and macroeconomics of achieving privatization, the policy measures introduced, and factors affecting the implementation of privatization. The political dimensions of privatization are analysed in order to explain the variations in national success in formulation and implementing privatization programmes. The author argues that evidence suggests that national governments as planned, and that rarely implement most divestiture policies from a technical standpoint, privatization is a learning process that evolves through trial and error. It also examines the apparently 'unconventional' methods used by the governments of Argentina, Brazil, and Peru to achieve privatization Comparative in its approach, the book seeks also to shed light on the nature of privatization in countries throughout the developing world. The book more generally argues that poorly designed privatization policies may have future serious implications on issues such as the rule of law, and the regulation of public utilities.
Book Description
A humorous yet practical look at the lucrative art of landlording by a born cynic and former gag writer. Realtor Andy Kane tells property owners how to keep wily tenants in their place (paying rent to make their landlord rich!) plus how to collect rents, train tenants to pay promptly and make minor repairs, fill vacancies, outsmart do-gooder groups and inspectors, handle complaints and make a bundle off tenants in addition to rent.
Customer Reviews:
It's Satire with Tongue-In-Cheek.......2007-07-27
I purchased and read this book about 20 years ago. In a discussion with one of my employees, it came back to mind. Andy Kane's book is truly a "no-spin". One thing I took away from this is if a tenant doesn't pay their rent, it's equivilent to someone holding a gun to your head and robbing you. I find it funny that the two previous reviewers didn't catch on that this book is not politcally correct. Factual, yes. P.C., no!
Cant really ethically.......2004-04-21
recommend as practical advice. Not sure because of the legalities. But read this for the humor! I couldnt put it down! Funny as can be. Could you use this advice? Oh yeah, if you dont mind a lawsuit or two, but the authors writing style make this a must read. Anyone who has ever owned rental real estate can appreciate this one. I want to read his "Revenge" on Landlord book if its as funny as this one.
A bare-knuckled guide on how to keep your tenants in line........1997-01-12
While Andy's prose may torture some, and his ethics offend
others, those who have actually been in the real estate
business will appreciate his hard-won practical advice.
This is the kind of book my friend Ed, king of the small
business seminars would love!

Book Description
For six acclaimed seasons, FBI paranormal detectives Mulder and Scully have been chasing monsters and little green men and exposing government conspiracies, while espousing the mantras "trust no one" and "the truth is out there." This work takes a close look at the popular television series and shows how its style, character and narrative structure have continued to tease and please a wide viewing audience every week for six years.
The first section examines the text of the series and the progression of its mythic story arc. This part also looks at the show's use of expressionistic techniques in both its visual and sound effects; the related tropes of self-reflexive humor, irony and the grotesque; and its ability to give the audience an occasional strong sensory jolt.
The second section explores the context that has given rise to The X-Files phenomenon in the 1990s. The show's gothic horror tradition is established, and its contribution to the Zeitgeist of the 90s is also acknowledged.

Exploring THE X-FILES!.......2001-01-14
Do you know that "The X-Files" TV series includes both "free-standing" and "bound" episodes? Do you know that these programs are thematically connected in many subtle ways? Are you aware that this program's view of reality has deep roots, reaching back to German Expressionism in painting and film, such as "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" released in 1919? That the character of Fox Mulder evolved from the traditions of such sleuths as Sherlock Holmes and Sam Spade? Does Dana Scully remind you of Clarice Starling from "Silence of the Lambs"? How do the details and atmosphere of "The X-Files" bear a familial resemblance to "Star Trek," "Twin Peaks," and even the Cold War paranoia induced by 1950's McCarthyism?
If you are interested in such explorations, Delasara's book is a rare treat. It is clear, intelligent, articulate, well-organized, and thoroughly researched. The author examines "The X-Files" as if it were a piece of superb literature. Delasara lucidly and easily discusses its characters, plots, themes, style, genre, and content. She then connects these elements to the program's genre (e.g., science fiction, gothic horror, film noir detective fiction and film).
Next--and especially fascinating--is the author's analysis of how this program links to its larger, social and cultural contexts, what she terms, "the zeitgeist of the 90s," which includes national and world politics, myth, folklore and urban legends, science, UFO and paranormal phenomena, religion, Jungian psychology, economics, folklore, and Cold War paranoia. One section explores how the discourse of UFOs, a dominant if "underground" type of discourse, functions in ways which influence our everyday lives.
Throughout this book, Delasara lays bare the creative complexity and nuance of "The X-Files." She mainly accomplishes this through deftly "playing" with oppositions: history vs. current issues; closed texts vs. open ones; cognition (Scully) vs. intuition (Mulder); the individual vs. society; science vs. the fantastic; head vs. heart.
Secondary and college teachers can use this book in many ways-for courses in literature, writing, cultural studies, anthropology, sociology, and contemporary history. Delasara's "deep reading" of "The X-Files" clearly demonstrates that what some people might refer to as a "silly TV show" actually functions as today's excellent literature. This book is energetic. It roams freely over our symbolic landscape. Throughout, though, what I admire most is not the author's objective analysis, though it fills these pages in abundance. What I DO like most is the author's pure passion for her subject.
I would like to correct a mistake in a review I did!.......2000-09-19
In my review on this page, I mention the character EdAsner incorrectly. I realize that he was in another episode of X-Files. Can you delete that info? The corrected review follows: In the preface to her book Poplit, Popcult and the X-Files (Mcfarland & Co., 2000), Jan Delasara says that she intends her book for "Non-specialist but literate and interested readers." This describes me. Although I am an academic and can see how this book would have enormous appeal as a text for college students in a pop culture or literaray analysis class, I have only sampled the "X-Files" TV series and am certainly not a specialist in socio-political positions, aesthetics, literary constructs, or popular media. But I have read enough in several areas to find a connection to nearly aspect of this book. For example, I had read the short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" which she discusses on pages 153-156 of the book. As she weaved it into the themes of "The X-Files" (p.158), I became more interested in the TV show. Likewise, I enjoyed several particular episodes of the TV series, such as "Clyde Brickman's Final Repose."When I read Delasara's discussion of this episode in relation to horror fiction, I became more interested in that genre! Because the author "uses the terminology of literary analysis sparingly," and defines terms when necessary using common vocabulary, I think a variety of readers will find this book accessible and engaging.

This describes me. Although I am an academic and can see how this book would have enormous appeal as a text for college students in a pop culture or literaray analysis class, I have only sampled the "X-Files" TV series and am certainly not a specialist in socio-political positions, aesthetics, literary constructs, or popular media. But the author summarizes each episode in the TV series and she relates each episode to a cultural mileau. I have read enough in several areas to find a connection to nearly aspect of this book. For example, I had read the short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" which she discusses on pages 153-156 of the book. As she weaved it into the themes of "The X-Files" (p.158), I became more interested in the TV show. Likewise, I enjoyed several particular episodes of the TV series, such as "Clyde Brickman's Final Repose" which is memorable to me because Ed Asner, from the old "Mary Tyler Moore" show, played a ghost. When I read Delasara's discussion of this episode in relation to horror fiction, I became more interested in that genre! Because the author "uses the terminology of literary analysis sparingly"--as she states in her preface-- and defines terms when necessary using common vocabulary, I think a variety of readers will find this book accessible and engaging.
Crossover Appeal.......2000-08-08
Books with crossover appeal are difficult to write, but Jan Delasara pulled it off with this book on The X-Files, probably THE most crucial pop cultural phenomenon in the 90's. Delasara's book is smart, well-informed, and, most of all, it's fun. Academics and fans alike will get a kick out of it: promise! Herself an academic writer (and one with impressive credentials in the field, by the way), Delasara brings considerable expertise to this topic, telling us where themes and motives come from, how the series develops its story lines over long periods of time, and what the show and its remarkable expertise can tell us about the culture we live in. The risk in all of this would be that Delasara might sound condescending to the fan community that has gathered around the show, a community that knows every little detail of every episode and that, on web sites and in discussion groups, has expanded the folklore around the show even further. But Delasara steers clear of this risk. She does use her academic background, but she keeps critical jargon to a minimum, introducing and explaining it whenever it's inevitable. She also admits, and then demonstrates, that she is as much as fan of the show as anyone else. She even makes the case that she's, in a way, a typical viewer of the show. She's obviously been immersed in it from the beginning, which shows that popular culture in general is a subject that academics don't look down upon any longer (as anyone can tell who's taken a look at college syllabi in the last couple of years). Pop culture is serious stuff, not only because it's all around us but because nobody can tell what's going to end up as official high culture in the years to come and what's going to end up forgotten. And The X-Files, Delasara shows us, has left a mark. There are quite a few other books on The X-Files; after all, every show of this caliber grow its own industry (cottage and pro). But most of them fall in either one of the two categories--dry academic writing, or gushy fan writing (think 'The Robot's Dungeon' on The Simpsons). So far only Delasara does right for both of these audiences, which is an outstanding accomplishment. Her book deserves both kinds of readers, and plenty of them. I highly, highly recommend it!

Very good for the average player........1998-09-05
This book can help you understand what to seek on the chessboard and how to achieve it, using excellent paradigms of great chess-masters. The author's comments are easy to read and understand, and can make you really love this "game". There are games in there, you'll never forget about. The combination in chess is what we call "magic" in life. Excellent gift for young players.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent and fascinating read for aspiring Oracle gurus.......2005-07-18
As an Oracle and SQL Server DBA for the last seven years I found this book an excellent and very refreshing change from technical manuals and books on Oracle database design and administration. The first few chapters are priceless from Oracle history to the useful read on Oracle tuning using Wait events. I really enjoyed learning how the product evolved from inception to the new version of 10g. All in all money well spent and nice to know that even such gurus as the Oak Table guys are human and have shared tough DBA experiences. Someday I want to meet and work with these guys!
I want more books like this one!.......2005-05-02
I really don't know where I should begin writing this review to give the book a proper credit that it deserves. Hmm...FUN - I think that this word best describes this collection of essays (eleven prominent authors instead of more usual one or two, certainly helped a lot).
Can't remember when was the last time that I read technical book that kept me reading and reading, and reading - simply because all essays were *fun* to read. To be clear, yes I'm an Oracle geek, but I don't think you have to be an expert to understand 'the point' in the majority of the book, on contrary, if you're by any chance an Oracle newbie you have an opportunity to learn from the true experts (from their work done on the "projects from hell") and pick up some good habits and techniques to start your Oracle career (this book is not really about internals as much as it's about proper design and importance of understanding technology before using it - and using it to the full extent - you'll probably never again write DB agnostic applications, if this was your sin in the past :-).
So, being an expert or not, I'm sure you'll get the true 'message' from this book that will stick with you for the rest of your life (of course experts will enjoy reading it slightly more, they'll finally learn, what AFIEDT.BUF is really all about ;-).
Finally, thank you guys for writing this book, and Mr. Mogens Noorgard (you lucky *****), thank you for "networking" Oak Table members together.
Thank you for reading this review.
A Painful, Funny Journey.......2005-04-08
I have 14 years of Oracle Experience with some of the busiest and largest transaction systems in the world. This book really hit home for me and brought back a lot of memories of painful times as well as gave me new insights. I have re-read this book twice since getting it amonth ago. It is that good.
The Tales of the Oaktable is a skeptic's work of technological history that is funny and hard to put down, but which also provides experienced database professionals roadmaps to solve their pressing problems ( or even see that they have a problem.)
The authors take an empirical, rational approach to diagnosing and discovering the most serious problems while providing amusing revelations about the people and organizations they have worked with. Along the way they lift Oracle's skirts and take us out back to show us the dirty laundry and other junk in Oracle's back yard. They provide methods to diagnose and reapir problems in oracle performance as well as enumerate the known pitfalls in project management and database design. Seasoned IT types will groan and laugh during these chapters.
They also look at larger architectural, economic, psychological, and philosophical issues which have a direct impact on databases and large information systems. Norgaard's history of computing is quite depressing. And I agree that many of the "new" blood wants to focus on .NET and J2EE - when the real heart and soul is still the data.
Oracle Insights DOES require both deep thought and deep, hard-won knowledge of Oracle in order to fully enjoy it. So, if at first you don't like it, then you don't know what you don't know.
This should be on the Generic Documentation CD.......2005-03-29
Declaration of Interest: I was lucky to have worked alongside one of the authors. So that's why I bought it.
Glad I did. Read it on the beach over Easter weekend. Dipped in and out. Learned and laughed. Certain to re-read some chapters, and to refer back to it. The very different styles of the contributors make it all the more readable - you just don't know whats coming next.
Its worth the price for pretty much any 3 of the 11 chapters, even if you chose them at random. And you can hit your SAN manager over the head with it, he probably won't feel a thing anyway.
Thank you OakTable.
But its not in your shopping cart yet is it, because I've marked it down a star. Look, there are some minor bugbears. Don't be put off, just setting expectations:
1) There's some heavy name-dropping, perhaps in keeping with the project. Perhaps I'm jealous my brain isn't the size of a planet; these chaps' are.
2) You can see from (1)that HHTTG was funny once, about 20 years ago. My dad has been citing it as the answer to everything ever since; its worn a bit thin. I'm sure he would love this book for exactly that reason.
3) I'm the sure the sequel will be even better.
You can put me down for 2 copies of "Seeing Double: Tales from Under the Oak Table" while I'm here.
A niche book for Oracle internals experts.......2004-11-07
This book is intended for Oracle internals experts who want a deep, deep drill down into the guts of Oracle to look for optimizations. It's well written and very in-depth, but you should have a look at the table of contents to make sure that you can get anything out of this book before you buy it. If you aren't the target audience then you are likely to get little or nothing out of it.
