Take charge of your life - explore your options!.......1998-01-07
Highlighting actual professionals working in the field of family and consumer sciences (home economics) was the most interesting part in writing this book. Through the many profiles, it is evident that the careers in this field are extensive and interesting. They include the occupations of teaching and education but much more. For example, the traditional subject areas (foods and nutrition, clothing and textiles, child development, housing and interiors, human relationships, health and family living) are explored in each of five career fields: business, education and communications, human services, science and technology, and the arts. The pros and cons of entrepreneurship and types of businesses that lend themselves well to self-employment are included.
In addition to spotlighting actual careers, thirteen chapters cover general career education information, such as choosing a career, developing skills for job success, and finding and keeping a job. These chapters incorporate the skills that employers look for in new employees.
Careers in Focus - Family and Consumer Sciences is a textbook intended for secondary study, as well as vocational and technical education studies. However, its information is specific to anyone who is choosing a career, finding a job, and/or wanting to be successful in the workplace.
My background is in education. I have taught in Missouri and Wisconsin schools for over 25 years. My special interest in the field of family and consumer sciences has inspired me to write several cookbooks and guides to nutrition and physical firness.
May this book inspire you to choose a career that will be right for you!

Book Description
So you've got these fond hopes for blissful love, professional glory, fame, and fortune. But in the back of your mind there's that nagging fear. The man of your dreams will laugh in your face. Your hated office rival will come up with some whizbang marketing idea and get promoted, while you'll be asked to "help out with the phones." Steven Spielberg will buy the rights to your screenplay, spend $40 million producing it, and the critics will savage the film, mercilessly singling out your work for especially contemptuous, poisonous derision. But hey, everybody fails sometime. It's inevitable. So don't fear failure. Embrace it. In Complete And Utter Failure, Neil Steinberg joyfully explores the many fascinating facets of failure, from pointless failure (a brief history of several very dumb attempts to climb Mount Everest) to product failure (Reddi-Bacon, smokeless cigarettes, and Baby Jesus dolls) to institutionalized failure (the horrifying Dickensian spectacle of the National Spelling Bee, in which 8,999,999 children out of 9,000,000 fail in an excruciatingly public and humiliating fashion). This delightful book is filled with surprising and useless arcana--who really invented the telephone, what turned on Isaac Newton--guaranteed to help you annoy people at cocktail parties. Along the way Steinberg meditates on his own myriad miscues and disappointments, beginning with his failure to perform a magic trick in front of the neighborhood kids at age four (he blames Captain Kangaroo). Complete And Utter Failure is a wonderfully literate, witty book that issues a ringing message for our times: If at first you don't succeed, have a scotch and forget about it.
Customer Reviews:
Donald Trump needs to read this book!.......1999-12-21
A wonderful, hilarious, beautifully written, and inadvertently profound book. Neil Steinberg, previously the author of an eye-popping compendium of college pranks ("If At All Possible, Involve A Cow"), takes what would seem the most dismal of subjects and turns it into an empathetic and celebratory meditation on an underappreciated trait that binds us all together, the capacity to screw up, time and time again.
Plus, how can you not love the writing of someone who describes Hostess SnoBalls as "without corollary among the foodstuffs of the planet" and "unique to the point of freakishness"?
Like a lot of other people, I suspect, I loved this book so much I bought 20 copies and gave them out as presents; I'm actually glad it's out of print, for the sake of my bank account.
One of the funniest and most pointed commentaries I've read........1999-06-02
I made the mistake of lending this book to a friend of mine who moved out of state. If you chance upon a copy, buy it by all means. It's rare to find a book that can cause you to laugh until tears stream down your face, and this is such a book. In a world where winning is usually assumed to be the only worthwhile goal, Steinberg has shown the often poignant and sometimes pathetic side effects that accompany those who "go for the gold." The chapter on spelling bees was worth the price of admission. It's a crime that it's out of print.
This novel is for those who face life's tragedies with humor.......1998-10-19
If you ever "won" in a spelling bee, this book is a must read. Neil Steinberg captures the curious tragedies of life, however much they might try to masquerade. He finds the blunders obscuring the genius in patents, products and people. I do have to say that Mr Steinberg overuses his own experiences as the prism through which to view the world of stumbling. But then, I think he also needs and relishes criticism, and I don't want to disappoint. Overall, I want to thank Neil Steinberg for the occasional out loud chortle that surprised and disturbed both my family and strangers on airplanes as I read his book.
A great weekend read.......1998-10-16
Perhaps a more accurate title for this book would be "Perspective." Steinberg's theme of failure is explored from all sides and from top to bottom, the way some people get fascinated by glass paperweights. His writing style is concise but brings a laugh every couple of pages. It's a shame that such an entertaining read should be out of print. I came across a copy in a "clearance" bookstore for $4 and was intrigued by the title.

Book Description
This book turns the concept of self-improvement on its head. It brings together 39 and a half leading ideas in personal and business development, and offers a total antidote to the motivational, gung-ho, over-enthused tone of all the usual self-improvement guides. Delivered in fast, easily digestible chunks, in a style that makes you laugh while you learn, this book offers tongue-in-cheek advice about what not to do to ensure certain failure in every aspect of your life. From not having any goals, to not getting advice from people you've never met or who are dead, to not taking personal responsibility for your life and results, every idea, strategy, suggestion and story is guaranteed to propel you into the slow lane of total inadequacy.
How to be a Complete and Utter Failure comes with a warning - which you don't think about taking the direct opposite steps to those outlined in the guide, as this could seriously damage your chances of becoming a failure. Behind the humor, though, is good advice and a serious message. And whether you choose to heed the warning or not, it's an extremely entertaining read. The key difference from all other self-development books are: brevity WITH intelligence and humor, bringing together of a whole range of key ideas in one small book, the use of suggestion (and the 'don't do this' approach) to powerfully fix the ideas in the reader's mind while making the reading entertaining. This "un-improvement" guide offers 39 and a half steps to being a failure. The text is delivered in a "how not to" way using the power of reverse psychology to make its point.

If you don't do anything else, make sure you read this............2006-03-30
In addition to participating in Mr. McDermott's seminar and meeting him personally, I have read his book with an intensity that I haven't committed to since college, and found all of the above to be, in a word, exceptional. If you want to go beyond, even far beyond, where you are in life right now, then I reccommend that you start here. The rest is up to you.
Motivated? Phah! I can't be motivated!.......2003-08-14
I've been through a heat of self-development philosophies in my numerous years in this world, but none quite like this one. I would have thought I was wise enough to see through the reverse-psychology ploy, but from the beginning of this delightfully easy read and entertaining book made a miracle happen - a smile - and I felt energised to reflect on some areas in my life where I may have left to soak and may need a good frothing! I was privileged enough to catch Steve live -- and he's as charming as he is in the book. A good read and a must for anyone who feels stuck in a rut.

"Complete and Utter Failure" my behind!.......2002-11-09
This was a funny, interesting, facinating book. Filled with an amusing mix of facts and story, I have to say it's easily one of my favorite books of all time. If you're going on an extended train, bus or plane ride then this is the book for you. Neil Steinberg is a genius!

Great Book.......2007-05-13
This book is a great guide not only for begginers but also for professional singers, it helps you to know your body and how does it work when you sing, following the instuctions of this book you can certanly become a better singer.
Excellent Primer.......2006-09-07
This little primer is an excellent overview of the physiological aspects of breathing for singers. Even though this was written with choruses in mind, I have found it useful both as a professional singer and as a helpful tool as I teach my own voice students. Barbara is very clear both with her language and her diagrams; the mystery of breathing ceases to be a complete mystery! Barbara is an expert at "body mapping" and conveys her considerable knowledge and insight well in this little book.

Book Description
The Hindenberg disaster. Andy Warhol's Campbell s Soup Can. Marilyn Monroe standing over the subway grating. The first step onto the Moon. These powerful images have left an indelible impression in our collective mind's eye. This mesmerizing little volume celebrates these and hundreds of other artistic and cultural touchstones without actually reproducing them. Each page is devoted to a single image, with a caption providing its title or description and the date that it was created. Just that information evokes the image vividly. The page itself is blank. Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother. The album cover of Sgt. Pepper. A man facing a row of tanks in Tiananmen Square. Arranged in chronological order from 1900 to the present, these images are a testament to the enduring impact of photography, art, and the image as well as to the graphic precision of our shared memory bank. It's also a great pop quiz on cultural literacy.

waste of paper.......2007-04-05
People actually paid $5.95 for a copy of...NOTHING? I'd like to commend the author for, well, picking a font and bottom-center justifying a small handful of words....244 times. Hats off to you, sir.
I'm writing a book now. It's a book about paper, only I'm not going to use paper. At least my book won't be a giant waste.
I tried to give this 0 stars, but Amazon won't allow that.
Don't buy this. Fold 122 pages of blank printer paper in half. At least you'll get some exercise. Just remember to unfold that paper and use it afterwards.
Images of the Century.......2004-10-04
A stunning piece of invention. Davenport presents us with captions and no pictures, and yet it works as well as if the pictures appeared. So deeply are the images imprinted in our visual memories, the can be imagined instantly. The design is extremely user-friendly for such a radical concept; words as pictures.
Incredible Piece of Imaginary Work.......2004-03-10
Davenport used an incredible angle with this book. When I was first browsing an art store at The Ohio State University I picked up this book expecting to see pictures of various objects or events in modern society that played an important role. To my dismay, at first, there were no images whatsoever. However, once I looked at the first 15 pages (of text) that contained events, people, objects, etc... My mind ran wild with the images that were supposed to be triggered. This book is a beautiful piece to add to any respectable book collection. I give it my highest recommendation!!
How clever.......2003-11-21
This has been a hit wherever I have shown this book. High up on both my holiday and special occasion gift-giving. It makes you realize that you don't have to see an image that is thoroughly imprinted on your brain. You just need a brain. I loved it.
What a scam!.......2003-09-20
Images that have changed our lives, with no images! Just captions - 1 per page. It looks like the "author" (using that term as loosely as possible) didn't want to pay royalties to include the actual images. This is so insulting it's offensive.

Customer Reviews:
A very poor book on EA.......2006-09-07
About 4 pages of this book concern Zachman. The rest of the book largely avoids any enterprise architecture topic.
The confused authors, and some reviewers here, do not understand the difference between enterprise architecture and software architecture.
The title of this book mimics the very popular PDF document "A Practical Guide to Enterprise Architecture", written for government EA practice. It may seem odd, but US government practice is at the forefront of EA because the organizations are huge and the IT budgets massive. Look for this PDF file on the CIO council website or www.egov.gov. This begs the question of if the authors wanted to steal from the popularity of the earlier work and take advantage of those without a deep knowledge of EA- such as most programmers.
Missing from the book are things like TOGAF, FEAF, DODAF. Also missing is the practical list of artifacts in Scott Bernard's EA3 book. Come to think of it, get Scott's book, DODAF vol 1 & 2, the PDFs at www.egov.gov under the EA link, FEAF v 1.1 (PDF) and you will be far ahead of this confused mishmash of OO religion and EA misinformation.
I've been doing this for about 20 years, so I may be entitled to an opinion.
The title is misleading. The book is NOT a practical guide to Enterprise Architecture.......2006-08-19
The title 'A Practical Guide to Enterprise Architecture' led me to expect a book that dealt with the processes, challenges and techniques for creating an ENTERPRISE architecture. It does not. The book is about various technology frameworks. The Contents lists Systems Architectures, Solution Architectures and Service Oriented Architectures but not Enterprise Architecture. Enterprise Architecture is skimmed over in the Preface. The book barely touches on Zachman and Spewak and Hill. It ignores FEAF, TEAF, TOGAF, PERA, C4ISR, the Clinger-Cohen Act and other ENTERPRISE stuff completely. Enough said. Whatever this book is, is it is NOT a practical guide to ENTERPRISE Architecture. The book may be of use to technical architects designing solution-frameworks to support an Enterprise Architecture.
Outstanding Enterprise Architecture Book.......2006-08-12
I picked up this book today to get a some input on a pending Enterprise Architecture effort I am pursuing for a large organization. This book blows me away with a straight forward evaluation of a number of enterprise architecture approaches. It gives examples of methods to sell enterprise architectures to customer organizations. One of the greatest difficulties in enterprise architecture is communicating its value to lay people. This book does a great job of spelling things out in simple English. I am an experienced Enterprise Architect. I have been in the field for about 5 years. This book is practical and provides a number of excellent ideas for people in the trenches trying to solve true enterprise problems that span process, data, information, technology, applications/systems, and information assurance architectures. This book is a must have for practicing Enterprise Architects. This is a practical guide and not a pseudo-intellectual academic treatise. This gets 5 stars from me. Bravo!
Don't bother.......2006-02-09
book does not discuss enterprise architecture -- doesn't cover some of the methods, frameworks, and the purpose for EA. Doesn't even give a definition of what EA is. Contains several disjointed chapters with topics that are remotely related to EA but does not even begin to tie together or address the queston "what is EA?" You can do better with free online resources.
This book is not about EA.......2005-12-25
Completely missed the Enterprise side of the equation. As an introduction or practical guide this book is next to useless. I gave this book one star and someone it appeared as four !!!!!
Book Description
The book was written in an attempt to answer some of the common sense business questions related to Enterprise Architecture. What are the issues? What is Enterprise Architecture? Why should an organization consider Enterprise Architecture? And how to build the Enterprise Architecture.
An innovative Enterprise Architecture Framework is proposed. The framework looks like a content page showing the chapters of a book or in this case the components of the Enterprise Architecture without actually describing them but showing how they fit into the whole.
The book then identifies and summarises Best Practices in the Enterprise Architecture development. Practices will be outlined at each phase of a proposed Enterprise Architecture building process which in itself becomes a suggested good practice.
The book is intended to be a document essentially summarising why and how to build an Enterprise Architecture.
Customer Reviews:
Worth your money.......2007-05-02
It is quite compensive, which nearly cover all of the EA's area.
If you are interesting in knowing the real business case and issue
i strongly recommend you read some chapter of this book.
