outstanding.......1999-05-13
Wonderful, simply outstanding. This book is simply masterful in the way it analyzes the child's mind. I feel safer with my own children. This reminds me of a song. It goes like this: " My friend's got a girlfriend and he hates that (explicit) he tells me everyday. She wants more dinero just to stay at home, well my friend you gotta lululul, children are neat and cool' Twenty-two points, plus triple-word score, plus fifty points for using all my letters. Games over. I'm outta here.

Book Description
Understanding MIDI--the Musical Instrument Digital Interface--is essential to the best use of modern musical equipment. Paul White covers the basics of MIDI and MIDI equipment.
Customer Reviews:
Great for musicians and multimedia programmers.......2006-05-04
I highly recommend this inexpensive little book for absolute beginners whether they be programmers or musicians. No real prior knowledge of music terminology is required to understand the simple but necessary questions and answers discussed in this book. The author also talks about basic connections to equipment for musicians and lists the various messages and codes that both musicans and programmers need to know. I needed this information to work with the Java Sound MIDI programming language features. I could find plenty of sample programs using these features, but the explanations were purely from a programmers point of view and I had no idea what the big picture was. This little book solved all of that. Its purpose is to only answer the "big picture" questions, so when you finish this book I suggest you pick up "The S.M.A.R.T. Guide to Producing Music with Samples, Loops, and MIDI". It is very comprehensive and although it is aimed at musicians, I've learned a lot about what musicians are looking for in terms of writing applications for them involving Java and MIDI.
Gotta Get This!.......2004-07-07
If you're struggling to understand some or all aspects of MIDI, this is the book for you. It is written in standard, non-technical English for easy comprehension. You can learn the basics of MIDI to run a setup of MIDI devices in no time or for whatever application(s) you wish to use MIDI. This book also covers some basics of sequencing and synthesis that you can apply to your music. You simply cannot miss out on this great bargain.
Book Not As Described.......2004-04-22
This book is barely bigger than your thumb. It doesn't even look like the picture on Amazon's page. If you are over 30 buy a microscope - you'll need it to try to read it. It won't lay flat to use a reference. The author should sue the publisher for incompetent packaging of what most others describe as a good book. I wouldn't know; I can't read it.

Good start for the clueless.......2001-03-06
For a total MIDI beginner, this is a very good intro. I am an old ex pro musician who hasn't done anything musical for over 20 years and decided to try my hand at doing something on my iMac. This little book describes the terminology, software, hardware, etc., requirements that a beginner should be expected to know about. It allowed me to take my next step without feeling totally ignorant. Very basic, just like the title says.

Book Description
Until recently, guitar players had reason to feel left out of the great electronic revolution in music today. After a few false starts and several years of development, however, the new technology has become an accessible and relatively inexpensive tool for the vast expansion of every guitar player's musical creativity. The development of both improved guitar synthesizers and of guitars as 'triggering' devices for MIDI setups, means players can now use their axe to play other instruments with an entire new vocabulary or preset or programmed sounds, rhythms, and special effects. Guitar Synth and MIDI is the first book to explain the new guitar revolution in both theory and practice. Included are basic information and technique on the history and development of guitar synthesizers, basic synthesis, MIDI sampling, triggering, and how particular artists like Andy Summers, Frank Zappa, Al DiMeola, Robert Fripp, Lee Ritenour and others are currently using synthesis and MIDI in their own guitar playing. From choosing equipment to using it, recording or on-stage performance, here is essential information and inspiration for every modern guitarist.

this book is very interesting in the fact that it discribes techniques used to integrate guitar into electronic music, kinda like some of the various NIN pieces we know and love... I recommend it, although it could go into more depth with a slightly easier to understand sentece structure

Not Clearly Written.......2006-01-24
Midi is not that complicated. But there are some basic points that are very fundamental to understand. For instance, it is important to understand that Midi is a protocol for recording and transmitting information about notes and note length, rather than a format for recording the audio waves themselves. It is also important to understand that a keyboard is used generally for two discrete functions: for recording a string of note information and for playing back note information as sound. Each of these functions can be handled by other devices (for instance, the note information can be recorded on a keyboard controller while the note information can be played back by a software synthesizer on the keyboard).
This book unfortunately complicates important ideas like this by digressing into topics like "the history of Midi" and various unusual instruments and set-ups. The book would be better if it concentrated on explaining the basics of a modern Midi studio setup before covering other topics and if the individual sections were better organized.
It's alright........2005-09-30
Well it's a nice little handbook if your clueless about MIDI. If you know a little about MIDI then this is not the book for you. Most of MIDI you learn by playing around with it.

Book Description
Few features of contemporary American culture are as widely lamented as the public's obsession with celebrity--and the trivializing effect this obsession has on what appears as news. Nevertheless, America's "culture of celebrity" remains misunderstood, particularly when critics discuss its historical roots.
In this pathbreaking book, Charles Ponce de Leon provides a new interpretation of the emergence of celebrity. Focusing on the development of human-interest journalism about prominent public figures, he illuminates the ways in which new forms of press coverage gradually undermined the belief that famous people were "great," instead encouraging the public to regard them as complex, interesting, even flawed individuals and offering readers seemingly intimate glimpses of the "real" selves that were presumed to lie behind the calculated, self-promotional fronts that celebrities displayed in public. But human-interest journalism about celebrities did more than simply offer celebrities a new means of gaining publicity or provide readers with "inside dope," says Ponce de Leon. In chapters devoted to celebrities from the realms of business, politics, entertainment, and sports, he shows how authors of celebrity journalism used their writings to weigh in on subjects as wide-ranging as social class, race relations, gender roles, democracy, political reform, self-expression, material success, competition, and the work ethic, offering the public a new lens through which to view these issues.
Customer Reviews:
Simply stunning!.......2003-08-07
This is a brilliant book on a subject that we often dismiss as trivial. Remarkably, as you read Ponce de Leon's history of the evolution of celebrity journalism, you realize that most of the strategies the celeb followers and creators employed 100 years ago are still being used today in People, Sports Illustrated and similar magazines. Equally fascinating is the way more astute (or malleable?) celebrities learned to adapt to the culture of celebrity and present themselves in a certain manner so as to fit the necessary mold. (Witness the way Katherine Hepburn posed as an everyday woman with the same concerns as any other homemaker during the 1930's -- the truth was probably very different.) Mr. Ponce de Leon's first book is an engaging and penetrating critique into the ways in which celebrities are presented -- and present themselves -- and how the entire notion of celebrity is manipulated in ways that are designed to reaffirm middle class mores.

Customer Reviews:
It covers pretty well software security theory.......2007-05-09
It is a good book but with the exception of the chapter on buffer overflows, my perception of the book is that it focus mainly on the theory of software security. As someone who has an engineer formation, I have a preference for books more pratical with more concrete examples. For this reason, I did prefer Hunting Security Bugs
So very very good.......2006-09-22
When I read this, I was like oh my gosh, how could I ever code like that.
This book is so, so very important if you care about secure coding.
Highly recommended.......2006-03-04
Accurate, to-the-point, and proper coverage of main topics. Good job on part of authors.
Unfortunately, the book's accompanying website (www.buildingsecuresoftware.com/) at the time of this writing is not responding.
Software Security lives.......2006-02-24
One of the authors here. John Viega and I were very pleased with this book, which seems to have ignited an entire field. Now that we have a few more years under our belts, I recommend that you check out Software Security: Building Security In for a treatment of how to put the software security philosophy in this book into practice.
It's time to DO software security.
The book that launched a new security genre.......2005-01-05
'Building Secure Software' (BSS) is an excellent book. I can't believe it was published in the fall of 2001, and I've only gotten to it now. Negative reviewers should remember that a single book can't address every security topic under the sun. BSS is the first of several titles by authors Viega and McGraw; those looking for additional details can peruse their later books.
BSS has three overall strengths which merit a five star review. First, the book contains the distilled wisdom of its two authors. We are lucky to have two developers-turned-security-experts sharing their insights with us. They explain many concepts in plain language suitable for coders and non-coders alike. I especially enjoyed their ten guiding principles of ch 5 and the auditing software advice of ch 6. In other sections, like ch 4, they argue that 'open source' does not equal 'secure.' In ch 2 the authors explain the importance of system specifications, i.e., how is a system expected to act under a given situation? These sorts of insights are useful for managers as well as developers.
Second, BSS backs up its recommendations with real code examples. The authors don't just tell you what to do -- they show you. In many cases they begin with a 'naive' implementation fraught with errors, which they then incrementally improve. The password material in ch 13 is an example of this technique. A related benefit of the book was its description of attack trees in ch 6, which I find helpful.
Third, the authors very thoroughly discuss topics mentioned in other books, but not backed up in those titles by code samples. For example, ch 7 has a very detailed buffer overflow explanation. If you want to follow actual code and memory locations to understand how to write a buffer overflow exploit, ch 7 will explain how to do it.
BSS's errata doesn't seem to be available at the defunct book Web site, although I was able to retrieve it via the Internet Archive. My main concern with the book's content was the replacement of the security principle of 'availability' by another principle, 'authentication.' In other words, when one mentions 'the big three security goals,' (p. 22) they are 'confidentiality,' 'integrity,' and 'availability,' not 'authentication.'
I didn't find the relative lack of Windows-specific material to be a problem. The book's errata addresses some of the negative reviewers' concerns. Several years after its initial publication, BSS is still a timely and relevant read that I recommend to all developers and security professionals.
