Buy it if you want 'IN'.......2007-08-31
A friend suggested this book after she used it to get into pharma sales from advertising sales. I inquired with other pharma reps when I wanted to do the same and all suggested it highly so I bought it. If you follow the guidelines and add your own unique touches you should be able to break into this business. In actuality it could probably help anyone trying to change their career direction, it's all about knowledge and truly learning the ways of craft that you desire. This book it DEFINITELY worth it! I followed every step and got an offer.
I landed a Pharmaceutical Sales Job!!!.......2004-08-16
After 3 interviews with 3 large Phamra companies, I landed a pharmaceutical sales job. This guide was great in helping me figure out exactly what the interviewer was looking for in a sales candidate. This is a VERY realistic guide since a guy that actually DOES the interviewing for a pharmaceutical company wrote it.
A must have guide for anyone trying to get into this industry.
Thanks,
Tina

Customer Reviews:
If you're a very serious Mac/iPod addict, fine . . . otherwise, no........2006-03-25
After the first few titles, the "Hacks" series quickly deterioriated. "iPodf & iTunes Hacks" is evidence of this deterioriation. There is no content of value here unless you are seriously obsessed with your iPod and your Macintosh. Yes, Macintosh. There is virtually nothing in here for the Windows user, although Windows has better than a 95% marketshare. Get the idea that this book is intended for serious Mac zealots? The author(s) make it crystal clear with numerous uncomplimentary remarks about Windows and Windows users along the "you're dumb if you don't use a Mac" vein. So better than 95% of the market is dumb . . . The book has a 2005 copyright, so the Windows version of iTunes was available, it was just ignored.
The author(s) (the volume is a compendium of attributed entries)were obviously desperate for content. Four pages are given over to iTunes Keyboard Shortcuts, something you can find in the iTunes help file. Fourteen pages are devoted to spending $400 - $500 on building from scratch a plastic center console for your car to hold your iPod. (The cost is for materials only: considering that you have to create a mold and so forth, the labor component would be considerable.) One the key components is an Apple logo decal. You can see this book is for people with a very peculiar mindset.
Other hacks are of equally dubious value, such as the one that shows you how to "clutter your desktop with click-to-play album covers from your iTunes library." Many of the so-called hacks are nothing more than referrals to third-party software which isn't free.
The devoted Macintosh fanatic, the kind of person who wants to decorate their car with Apple logo decals might find something of value in this book. I surely didn't. Except for strangeness like building the car console, everything in the book can be found on the web.

Common Hacks, Convenient Package.......2005-03-07
I flipped through this in a local bookstore recently while trying to kill some time waiting for my girlfriend. Like most hack books this book contains a collection of some simple, obvious hacks and some that are slightly more complex. Most if not all of these can probably be found by doing a few targeted searches on the web or digging through news groups but the convenience of having it all in one bound book at your fingertips is probably worth the price. This book covers hacks for Mac, Win and Linux with the bulk of the "good" hacks for Mac only thanks to AppleScripts.
For the serious hacker.......2005-02-27
While most of the hacks in this book are fairly benign, some are not for the feint of heart. In true hacker form, the author dismantles not only his iPod, but his car! You say you want to connect your iPod to a Linux machine? How about installing Linux right on your iPod!
This is a terrific book for anyone with the hacker spirit. But be careful. It will definitely leave you wanting to buy at least one more iPod to play with.
Cool Book.......2005-01-21
I must say I love this book. If you have a iPod, GET THIS
Fun book .......2004-11-30
I am really enjoying this book. It's a breezy romp through a lot of different technology all in some way connected to novel uses of the iPod. Many of the articles are simply features or aspects of using the iPod or iTunes that simply may not have been apparent. My personal favorites are the ones where the iPod is used with something else. Though I don't own a BMW nor do I have the inclination to fabricate fiberglass, it was fun to see how you integrate your iPod to a BMW, including its onboard computer and electrical system. Booting linux on an iPod is almost a punk gesture, one that you might not consider especially useful, but seeing how it has been accomplished is half the fun.
Its also a book about reverse engineering using the iPod as the center of several case histories. What is interesting is not just what you can do with an iPod but how you find out for yourself.
By all means buy this book if you want to twist your iPod(s) (you may need a few to explore it all) but ... even if you want to do nothing and just live vicariously through others accomplishments, buy it anyway.
I did find it really hard to play my iPod (which I enjoy doing while I read) and also to play with my iPod, something the book constantly challenged me to do. So, that's another reason to get two ... so you can listen to music on one and hack the other. Lots and lots of fun.

Customer Reviews:
Coffee table book.......2001-03-09
This is the smallest but most readable coffee table book you'll find. You can read it aloud in small groups or by yourself during commercials. It is funny, well researched, and nostalgic all at the same time. I've bought it for a dozen friends and recommend it highly.
brain transplant.......2001-02-27
as i've misplaced most of my memory...reading this book has been more effective than ginkgo biloba. i'm waiting for the portable pundit TV travel guides and online cocktail party game.
Party conversation guide.......2000-12-01
If you are a party goer and you have had problems keeping up with your well-read, in-the-know friends this is for you.
Its a cheat guide so that you can track the background of a reference that may seem vague or unfamiliar.
uncle john's : the next generation.......2000-10-29
Remember Uncle John's bathroom reader? That gift to those of us who enjoy a linger longer than a PEOPLE magazine article. Well, mixologist, amateur aesthetitician and pithy guy T.E. Krieger seems to have taken on the rather large task of telling us what we need to say at cocktail parties, the bulk of which are drab boring affairs where the goal is usually to see how long can one last, that or who one can leave with.
But actually what he seems to have done is to give a scattershot glance at enough disciplines to make even the least well-read out there passably informed on the basics (philosophy, art, literature, film...) and when mixed with an average intelligence and a little humility might actually add something to your run of the mill cocktail banter. That, or given us some good light reading for the john.
Think of it as NPR meets Howard Stern with a little too much Dennis Miller thrown in...
Good refresher before a date.......2000-10-05
Covers lots of topics, from film to art to literature. Not too deep on any of them but enough so that you don't sound like an idiot when your date says she majored in art history at UCLA. I guess that is the point.
The book is worthwhile. Not an ivy league education in a paperback, but fills in those gaps where you need them. Of course, you can just always say, "looks like rain tomorrow" and sip in your drink quietly. Or get this and spend an afternoon brushing up.

A must-read for the beginner before you hit the blackjack tables........2002-12-10
I picked up this book in the Las Vegas airport at the end of my first trip to Las Vegas. I wish I had got it at the beginning of the trip. This is a thin little book that teaches basic strategy and can easily be read in one sitting before arriving in Vegas. Once you have mastered basic strategy, you can move on to some other more advanced books such as Blackjack Bluebook.
You don't need to be Rain-Man to win at 21.......2001-07-02
A quick easy read. NO CARD COUNTING. Simple tips and strategies make the game fun for the amature, and almost completely remove the house advantage in Blackjack. You gain confidence and can relax and enjoy the game because you know you are doing it right. Using the easy techniques taught in this book, you can even the odds. Don't lose another winning hand because you are too lazy to read a few pages. A must-read for anyone who intends to visit a blackjack game, especially first-timers.

A self-guided tour of GIS and how it benefits consumers and businesses alike
Customer Reviews:
A good place to start!.......2007-04-01
The book with the CD are very useful to learn the basics about ESRI GIS principles. I was looking for a book to help gain some insight into how GIS works; this fulfilled the need.
Beware of software glitches on the CD-Rom.......2007-03-28
Received this tutorial today and imediately started on the lessons. Oops! There are two Glaring errors---so far--in the lesson plans. On page 49, when doing the Address Matcher exercise, an error appears: Cannot Build Geocoding Index. No way to get around it, unless you skip the rest of that lesson and move on. On page 75, at least on my home version of XP, cannot save the file to any format. Call to ESRI Support yielded little to no help at all. I only gave this rating a 3, because the overall lessons are great and it is something worth knowing, but the glitches dampen a bit of the enthusiasm. Hopefully, there wont' be any more on the CDRom.
Should change the title.......2003-11-16
to ArcExplorer for everyone.
The book is a great introduction for those who want to have a more or less thorough tour of what a GIS is capable of. Being an ESRI press book, it was more or less obvious that its only approach was goin to be through ESRI products (ie. ArcExplorer)
Anyway, the book only shows what can be done with the already processed, already "ArcMade" datafiles. It fails to explain anything else of the GIS creation process.
If you're looking for a technical book, forget it.
wonderful stocking stuffer.......2003-05-26
I recommend buying several copies of this book and sending them out to friends & family you might want to offer more of a glimpse into GIS than just sending them to an online atlas. It comes with ESRI's free GIS viewer ArcExplorer and a decent set of data to get started with, and AE itself is a handy tool for letting folks explore work you've done, or sending them work you've done for them (road trip!). Has an appendix for Import71, which is handy.
Exploring Smart Maps.......2000-06-07
We live at a time when more and more information is being converted into digital form. For example, music went from analog (records) to digital (CDs). Movies are going from videotape to DVD. Cameras are transitioning from taking photographs to generating digital images.
Books and maps are also going digital. While the advantages of a digital book are not clearly established, the advantages of digital maps are nothing short of breath-taking. That's because when transformed from paper to digital form, maps become enriched with information that simply cannot be included on a paper map. Davis calls these information rich products "smart" maps.
A whole new industry has emerged that deals with smart maps; it's called the Geographical Information System (GIS) industry. A GIS is computer hardware and software for spatial data handling and map making.
The variety of smart maps is so broad that the ambitious title of the book, GIS for Everyone, is not stretching it too far. Davis shows how students, business people, homemakers, and community leaders can use smart maps for school, work, home, and community action with just a Windows-based personal computer.
A computer program is needed to generate, view, and manipulate smart maps and the data they contain. One such program, ArcExplorer, is provided on the CD that is included with the book.
To generate digital maps requires data files that the computer uses to draw streets, county outlines, country boundaries, volcano locations, hurricane tracks, or any other feature or phenomenon that's mappable. The CD includes some 500 megabytes of such spatial data.
Davis guides the reader (and budding smart map user) through a series of thirteen "explorations" of places and spatial situations around the world from San Diego to Prague to Sydney, with stops at New York, Austin, and Rio de Janeiro. (Additional data, for the reader to explore on their own, are provided for other places such as Yellowstone National Park and Bucharest, Romania.)
The reader is encouraged not only to try his or her hand at exploring a variety of mappable environmental and cultural data and display the resulting smart map(s) on a computer screen but also to print, e-mail, or present the smart map on a web page.
Davis helps the reader/world explorer into the new world of smart maps by focussing on specific themes. In chapter 2, the theme is understanding digital maps. Chapter 3 focuses on finding answers with digital maps. In chapter 4 Davis shows the reader how to tell stories with digital maps. Chapter 5 helps the "reader" build digital maps and the final chapter, 6, helps the reader find additional data sources available on increasing numbers of web sites.
So, if you're interested in exploring your world and beyond (there's a satellite image of Mars on the CD), buy this book and start working with smart maps ASAP!

GPS for Everyone.......2001-07-05
GPS for Everyone is a compelling, exciting and informative read for professional resource and infrastructure mappers, monitors and managers, as well as for lay readers. After her insightful and helpful book on Virtual Reality, Larijani again engages us with an accurate, clear, timely guide to a high-tech topic. She takes us on a delightful historical and practical journey, using everyday words and amusing sketches, and covers the practical applications in spades. She answers the questions (1) What is GPS? (2) How does it work? (3) What can it do? (4) What can't it yet do? And (5) What's being done to turn (4) into (3)? Once opened, it's a hard book to close until finished!
Wow! One great book about one great system. Essential........1999-05-03
This book makes it all simple. And sexy. Well, sexy as technology goes. Almost everyone by now has seen or heard about GPS receivers and moving maps that pinpoint your location to within several feet. Anywhere on the globe. Something so spooky sounds impossible to understand, but Larijani covers it clearly and completely. ... The author even covers new and emerging job opportunities using the slick new capabilities. ... Larijani starts with the basics (such as how to navigate), tells how it works, who's involved, how to choose the right gear, what to do if signals degrade. She examines current uses in defense, mapping, environmental projects, earthquake prediction, utilities. And, since "our system" is usable world-wide, the overseas implications. One great book about one great system. Essential.
finally, something thorough and simple--a rare combination!.......1998-11-19
Anyone interested in this topic surely knows that most books on GPS are either oversimplified and incomplete or are far too technical for an on-the-bus read. Ms. Larijani has avoided those unappealing tendencies in her thorough, readable text. Everything seems to be covered, and for those areas that do need explaining, a complete glossary is there to help. A considerate effort by the author to bring this technology "down-to-earth," tangible to any who want to know. Strongly recommended.
A great deal of useful information, poorly communicated........1998-10-12
GPS and its many applications are addressed, including likely future developments. However, the author provides far too much detail about non-GPS systems and devices, making this a pretty boring read.
If you are interested in GPS, this is the book for you!.......1998-09-16
What I liked most about this book was that it was so readable. As a non-technical person who was interested in learning more about how GPS works, I found this to be the perfect book. The author does a great job of writing for the layman. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in GPS.

The best intro to ArcView available.......1997-07-27
This book was designed to teach the use of ArcView software, but it also gives a good start on understanding the uses of geographic information software. It has been adopted by many colleges and universities as their introductory GIS textbook, but for this purpose it is best paired with a general introductory textbook on GIS, such as the Clarke, Chrisman, or DeMers book. For someone looking to buy a desktop GIS program, this is the best (and most economical) way to find out if the technology will meet your needs
