Book Description

Seven months, three weeks, two days -- that's exactly how long Alexa has to establish herself in an exciting career. At twenty-one, she's determined to gallop into "the Real World with a Real Job, a Real Life, and a Real Future." Moving in with her parents and commuting from New Jersey into Manhattan is not an option -- and if she fails to find serious employment before the time runs out, it's off to teach English on the Third World island of Majuro for $100 a month!

But what jobs are available for an inexperienced young woman in the Big City? Writing headlines about yeast infections for Trend magazine? Sniffing deodorants for a living? Earthworm breeder? Phone sex operator?

The Real World, apparently, is not such a welcoming place. With employment opportunities growing increasingly fewer and more bizarre daily, should Alexa consider seeking some stability by moving in with her boyfriend Jared? Between her participation in a clinical sleep study for cash and her desperate attempts to become the voice of a cartoon cat in a last ditch effort to gain "respectful employment," Alexa hardly knows anymore. Maybe what she's really looking for is in the last place she ever thought she'd find it ...

5 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud funny!.......2007-08-10

What a great book! It was funny and sweet. It made me envious of Alexa who was so young, with her whole life ahead of her, and was completely adored by her boyfriend. Ah... to be young again! I am happy to recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-11-23

I am a dude...and this book was fantastic. That's saying something, IMHO.

Ms. Horn has the wit of Wilde, the brains of Tolstoy and the commercial sense of King. Ariel Horn, where's your next book already?

5 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!.......2005-07-09

just what i needed during my own job search...just moved to LA and am trying to find a job here, and this book had me cracking up the whole way! LOVED it!! recommmend it 100%

2 out of 5 stars Something was not quite right.......2005-06-15

I normally like chick lit, but this book was disappointing. The situations rang false (even though they were based on the author's actual experiences), and the characters just didn't seem real. The constant mention of Majuro got annoying.

I stayed with it only to see what happened, and the ending was satisfying. But this was not one of those books where I was sad to leave the characters when I closed the cover.

5 out of 5 stars hysterial and realistic.......2005-04-26

This book was SO funny!! Alexa is at times ridiculous and absurd-which is what makes her such a realistic and believable character (which almost NEVER happens in chick lit!). Sometimes (more often than not, actually) she does the wrong thing. But you know what? So do I. Everybody does, basically. And I loved that she was unafraid to be who she was: flawed, imperfect, funny, paranoid, silly, neurotic. Great read-- funny and entertaining throughout.

As an American i find the plight of the workers "down under" to be a riveting read. Mr. Markey in his tour de force breaks down the issues succinctly and makes it a page turner extraordinaire.

      Book Description

The Port-Wine Sea is a rousing parody of the best historical fiction ever written. It is a story about a British naval captain during the Napoleonic War, and his friend, a naval physician/espionage agent. They set sail once again aboard "H.M.S. Aghast" during the War of 1812 to demonstrate to the upstart Colonies the errors of their ways.

The doctor/spy tries to establish liaison with the Creek Indians to create a diversion to the main British assault. Meanwhile the noble Captain is diverted by a teenaged Maryland vixen. Along the way, they encounter a skittish horse, a demure skunk, a whooping crane, and an escaped colony of termites aboard the ship.

1 out of 5 stars Have the Purser Issue this woman a sense of humor.......2002-06-08

I love the Aubrey novels. I love a good parody. I love an atrocious pun. I love clever and obscure wit. I hate...well no...I dislike this book. It is dull, clunky, disjointed, repetitive and unimaginitive. I sense that Mrs. Wenger was unsure if she was writing a parody, or trying to write a story for inclusion in the series. The author alas demonstrates how so many bright people are also seen to be dreadful bores. I am halfway through the book and I fear I will do what I almost never do...put a book away unfinished. No greater disrespect can I show for any book. Don't waste your time or money.

2 out of 5 stars Slow, forced, weak parody. Disappointing........2002-03-29

Its a shame, but i'm only up to chapter four and I'm having trouble keeping awake. The author is perhaps a bit too proper to write a good parody. This O'brian series is a delight but it is also plump and ripe for a rollicking, wicked, down-and-dirty lampooning. Mrs Wegner just isn't up to it (as if you couldn't tell she's just too nice of a lady from her picture). So far the jokes are tedious, thin, and lacking in depth. I really really wanted this to be good, but its not, which is a shame after all the work I had to go to to locate a copy.

Don't waste your time, this would do better as fan fiction on a web page. Me...I'm going to reread Bored of the Rings to remind myseld of what a parody is supposed to be. (To be fair parody is tough...the harvard lampoon failed pretty badly on their 2nd try, Doon.)

5 out of 5 stars Way to GO, Susan!.......2002-01-18

Life is entirely too serious! Take a break from ponderous thinking and buy this book! Susan not only pokes fun at Jack and Stephen but gets a few jabs in at Hornblower as well. This is not an insulting parody but one written by someone who truly appreciates Patrick O'Brian's style. Entertaining! And Susan in a dead shot with a jelly bean in a crowded theater as well! Such a talented author!!

4 out of 5 stars Strap yourself in for a voyage on the sea of laughs.......2002-01-04

First, a word of warning. DON'T read this on any form of public transport. You will chuckle, chortle, laugh out loud, guffaw, and eventually find yourself upside-down out of your seat gasping for breath and giggling feebly whilst the other passengers contemplate you with pity, sympathy and the Heimlich Manouevre.

It is hilarious, no two ways about it.

But, as others have noted, you need to be a fan of Patrick O'Brian's books to get the full impact, otherwise most of the broadsides will sail in one eye and out the other. For those who know what Susan is talking about, this book is a hoot.

It is a gem, and it was one of the hilarious highpoints of my life to read it for the first time. I don't think my sides have stopped aching since.

Susan is a deep thinker, and I am afraid that she lapses into philosophy towards the end. Good stuff, to be sure, but I was hoping for more sustained laughter and I was disappointed at actually having to engage my brain to get through it all.

But, that minor niggle aside, this is a great book for fans of Patrick O'Brian, and there is a joke on every page. A joke in every sentence on some pages, and these are where you need to tighten your seatbelt to survive the trip!

      3 out of 5 stars Grows Tedious.......2001-02-20

Many of the paragraphs are spot-on parody. There are many deliciously funny bits for the Patrick O'Brian fan -- just flip through and pick them out. But for those who like to immerse themselves in a well-told tale, the book quickly grows tedious. One of O'Brian's strengths is the ability to describe his fictional world vividly enough to draw the reader in The sheer density of Wenger's parodied rephrasings of various bits of various books in the Aubry-Maturin series becomes a string of interruptions -- an impediment to the reader who wants to enter the world she is creating. Wenger's approach could make for a brilliant short humor piece. Always leave them wanting more!

This is true of any number of parodies, so I suppose it is unfair to complain. This book is certainly more clever and intelligent than "National Lampoon's Doon" (parody of Frank Herbert's "Dune").

Certainly not a must for fans of Patrick O'Brian, but probably enjoyable for those who love parodies.

Sometimes I see people give this series of books "so so" reviews. This book, and others in the Pual White "Basic" series are made to be a small reference book. These books are about the size of a pocket dictionary, plus it only cost 8 bucks. If you are looking for something that has every detail on the subject just keep looking. If you need something that gives a good overview and makes a good book to throw in a gig bag, this is the book you are looking for.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2003-03-18

This book is a great read, and a bargain at 8 bucks. It gave me a great overall understanding about how effects and processors work in the studio. I had some previous knowledge on the subject, but had many questions answered by the book. I would recomend this book to anyone who wants to clarify their knowlege on the subject. Some topics included are: insert points, aux sends, eq for certain instruments, gates, compressors, and more. You can't afford to not buy this book.

          Book Description

Lawrence Driscoll's fresh examination of the meaning of drugs from the Victorians to the present asks us to listen to historical and current voices whose positions on drugs are at variance with our "truths." Driscoll draws on the work of figures as diverse as William Burroughs, Sigmund Freud, Conan Doyle, and Anna Kavan to shed light on different or silenced ways of talking about drugs and to offer us a historical counter-memory. The result of his work is to unsettle and disturb the familiar parameters that frame our discussion of drugs, revealing that others are available: positions which expose our own constructions as surprisingly limited.

5 out of 5 stars You wont find a better game suppliment.......2005-01-10

This book is one part fiction, one part monster manual, and one part art portfolio. With a nice three pronged attack like that, with each aspect being of the highest quality, you can not go wrong. The fiction tells about a group that travels the country sides of Europe cataloging the demons of the future world of Engel. There are a lot of twists and turns, and the story has a lot of really deep and interesting characters. So the book is worth the money for the story alone, but it still provides an army of wonderful drawings and a list of sinister Dreamseed for you Engel game (or any D20 game for that matter).

Simply put, this is the best game suppliment ever for the best RPG ever! You shouldn't miss this for the world!

            5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2003-04-05

This book is an account about Creatures made of Dreams and Nightmares. It follows through the writings of a strong-willed man whose sanity is tested and troubled by the creatures he encounters. As with all Engel works, it is a book of history, and the accounts are poetic in form and mythical in measure. The text flows from one horror to the next with both an accurate and beautific description that not only describes the specifics of these creatures of darkness, but also conveys their mystery and dark glory. A suggested read for anyone who enjoys both biblical legends and futuristic horror. Engel in all is an unparalleled work of storytelling.

            Customer Reviews:

            4 out of 5 stars I have been looking for a book like this, a VB.Net perspective.......2007-04-12

Overall I find this book good at what it advertises to be, a tour through the process of making a DirectX game in VB that would be very interesting and appealing to a novice programmer (teen). The game is a simplified 2d rpg/adventure game, called `Celtic Crusader'. While functional, in the interest of simplicity and time by the author's own words it isn't a fully featured game, it lacks features such as character inventory or network play.

If you are looking for detailed information on DirectX, this is not the book. This book does not explain the DirectX methods used, or even display their signatures, it just tells you what the routine you are coding does as a whole, and gives you the code.

I currently work in VB.Net, but I am experienced in the last few incarnations of VB, so the conversion of the provided code examples into VB.Net is not much of a problem. I would say someone familiar with VB.Net but without experience in VB6 will not have much problem; in fact the DirectX method calls in VB.Net are more logical than in VB6.

            For example
            d3ddev.Present(ByVal 0, ByVal 0, 0, ByVal 0)
            becomes
            d3ddev.Present(Handle.zero,Handle.zero, 0, Handle.zero)

If you pay attention to the intellisense balloons then the DirectX method calls are fairly easy to figure out.

The author doesn't fully qualify all his references, so be aware and supply the appropriate qualifacation for the constants. Be sure to Imports DxVBLibA

            For example
            d3dpp.SwapEffect = D3DSWAPEFFECT_DISCARD
            becomes
            d3dpp.SwapEffect = CONST_D3DSWAPEFFECT.D3DSWAPEFFECT_DISCARD

The VB side of the code is the same (an If-Then is still If-Then) except that you will need to recognize form events as such by their names instead of their handles keyword.

The DirectX8 for Visual Basic type library reference is still available with DirectX9.0c in VB.Net (just look under the Com tab when adding the reference) and seems to work fine in XP (I have tried it on 3 different machines.) I have not worked through the entire book yet, but so far I have not had any problems with compatibility.

This book is thinner than the typical programming book (tome) you normally find. It leads the reader directly through the creation of this adventure game, cutting out many side details as mentioned earlier. However, I find it delivers enough to create a decent working game, and a nice resource for a programmer looking for straightforward code examples.

5 out of 5 stars VB6 is alive and well!.......2006-09-03

Don't believe those that tell you VB is dead, vb is still alive and well! Just look at Microsoft Access 2003(A database program)when you build advance coding in it you are using vb language, even in the latest Access edition, VB is still there. Just visit your local book store, you will still see VB books out there. Another proof that VB is still alive, look at many E-commerce shopping carts, many of them are build in VB, and they are functioning with great precision.
The book is intended for the teenager that wants to explore programming in a fun, and easy method, and Vb can deliver that without advance codes that will make a teenage kid left in the dark. It will give them the opportunity to learn to write simple executable codes, once they do that, then they can move on to Vb.net or C++. And with that, the author would accomplish his/her mission, and that is teaching a young mind.
Go ahead buy the book, play with the codes, and have fun!

            4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-04-18

Just started programming and VB seems like a good place.
Johnathan rambles on a bit to much about maps but I learned alot. Rich D

            5 out of 5 stars VB6 DEAD ?.......2006-03-26

Helloooo! VB 6 is dead! <--------- You are in denial.
First off VB will never leave you in the dry.
            1. VB is owned by Microsoft and will never be ported to Linux or Mac.
            2. VB has continued to have new releases.
            3. C++ uses directx just like the rest of programming languages for games.
            4. VB dominates in database programming. [MMO] Game DataBase!
            5. It is possible to code in VB, that can run faster than C++.
            6. Most people who bash VB do not know how to code in it and claim it to be for beginners when they only seen the dev. Fact is VB can do anything C++ can if you know how to code it.
            7. So i say read and know what you are talking about before shooting off at the lips about something you have no clue about. Try looking at the development and then retract your comment.

5 out of 5 stars It is a book about DirectX 8 you VB6 Basher.......2006-03-02

The VB6 basher above ignores that fact that VB6 isn't dead especially to those who already know it - did our compilers stop working when Microsoft stopped supporting it? Did they ever REALLY support it? Remember, VBA6 is still the core of Office 2003 and unless MS wants to break the entire financial industry it will be around for a long time.

If you know VB6 this book is a great way to quickly introduce you to DirectX and take advantage of its graphics capabilities. I could already program conventional apps in VB fairly well (newsreaders and such) as well as make API calls to do things VB won't do on its own but had never worked with Bitmaps and Sprites. If this sounds like you this book is just what you need to gain an understanding of 2D techniques. The book took me a weekend to finish and I had already begun extending his sample code before finishing chaper2.

Don't listen to cynical VB bigot amazon trolls. The book was worth the money.
