Great Book!.......2003-12-10
This book really introduces teens to the idea of getting a job. Prevola and Hobgood are amazing writers. They should get an award! This book really moved me and made me think about the future and getting a job. If you decide to get this book you will not regret it!
A Great Resource.......2001-03-22
This book is easy to read and useful for first-time job seekers of any age. I have purchased several copies of this book for girls that I mentor.
A must-read for all young adults!.......1998-06-09
This is the most thorough, step-by-step book I've ever read on this subject. It is perfect for any young adult who wants to know how to get a job (that includes college aged men and women). This book provides a simple recipe on how a teenager or any young adult can go about getting a job.
The format of the book is setup so that it is easy to read. There are quotes and examples from people as well as check lists that make the book very interesting. I found myself thinking, "that's a good idea!" many times throughout the book.
My teenage daughter read it and followed the method explained in the book. She got three job offers for this summer in the first week. I was amazed because she has no work experience. Looking neat, being prepared, and showing a sense of responsibility go a long way to landing a job.
I can't say enough about how well organized and interesting this book it. Anyone who has a teenager or works with teenagers should buy this book!

Best of Jane's Addiction
ASIN: 0306814781 |
Book Description
"[Whores] masterfully recaptures the manic energy and ruined glory of a brilliant, bombastic era fueled by sex, drugs, and groundbreaking rock 'n' roll." (Boston Globe)
"Whores acts as a fine alt-rock companion to Motley Crue's similarly narco-fueled, quote-based The Dirt." (Blender)
Jane's Addiction's 1988 breakthrough album, Nothing's Shocking, had a seismic impact. With a bracing combination of metal, punk, and psychedelia, coupled with lead singer Perry Farrell's banshee-ina- wind-tunnel vocals, Jane's Addiction helped put alternative music on the map. The band helped pave the way for the mainstream success of bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Nirvana. Along the way, Jane's Addiction released another classic album, Ritual de lo Habitual (with the hit "Been Caught Stealing"), founded the Lollapalooza festival, and openly celebrated a bacchanalian lifestyle that blurred all lines of gender and sexuality.
Drawn from original interviews with the band, their friends, and their musical colleagues, Whores takes readers through Farrell's early sonic experiments with Psi-Com and the formative days of Jane's Addiction to their drug-addled break-up and controversial reunion with 2003's Strays. Along the way it provides a candid, often disturbing glimpse into the dynamic alternative rock scene of Los Angeles in the '80s and '90s.

Review of Perry Ferrell's "Whores".......2007-08-04
I read Dave Navarro's book first, and then Perry's book, and I loved them both, just as I love and respect both guys, as artists and as people. I personally wouldn't write a book in the style/format that Perry used, but that certainly took nothing away from it's overall charm and entertainment. Dave didn't mentioned Jane's, as much, and Perry brought out a lot more information I didn't know, and I really enjoyed reading this book, and then watching his videos is almost too much for me. I laughed so hard at him - he is so crazy (a good crazy), sounds like a fun guy you would like to know, and gave a good insight into what all happened during the reign of the once "all time great legends" of a band, "Janes's Addiction." There isn't a day that goes by that I don't play Kettle Whistle, a partial Jane's Addiction collaboration CD, and I will never get tired of them. I think Perry wants to put the band back together. I think if they can't do some things together just in the studio in the old Jane's style, that's a shame. Perry has played with Dave in Camp Freddy, but I just miss these guys so much. I've bought all the Jane CDs I can find, 3/4 of Perry "on his own" CDs, the Panic Channel, Trust No One CD by DN, and plan to try to get my hands on a whole entire collection to put together, if anybody knows the best way to find the websites, etc. They broke up - they took a piece of me. I don't blame them - it's just sad. Maybe we're being selfish. Has Perry written anything else, or Dave?? I am now watching Spread Entertainment, Dave Navarro's Mania TV, and a lot of the videos are on there, and I was glad to see that. I really enjoy Mania TV.
not easy reading. .......2007-01-07
More of a list of opinions and comment than a true story line. Did not finish this book.
Life in the Fast Lane.......2006-10-05
For anyone who wants to really understand the underground scene of the eighties in Los Angeles, this book is for you. The book fills in alot of gaps as to who the creative geniuses behind Jane's Addiction were. I grew up in Los Angeles and appreciate the vivid detail the book takes in what the music scene (goth, grunge, punk, hippy) was all about. I also appreciate the mention of Michael Ozair who was a legendary figure at the time - a Ken Kesey of his day with the Shroomsville Family as a sort of Merry Pranksters of the eighties. I had the opportunity to experience the legendary gatherings, parties and events that Ozair put together. Dave Navarro was definitely part of that scene as I remember, seeing him and Ozair together at the gatherings, and Grateful Dead shows. (I also know that both Perry Farrel and Ozair were involved in the Kabbalah scene, and have crossed paths in the late 90's). I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the musical youth culture in which this music grew out of. I was also very happy to see the mention of the early gigs at "Scream", since that is where Jane's Addiction got their earliest cult following. However, I have only rated it with four stars because there was not enough information about what inspired the songs themselves. I would have loved to have seen more about what inspired the songs, lyrics and musical content. Other than that, it was a book that was hard to put down....
Hard to put down.......2006-04-24
As a new fan to Jane's Addiction, it's usually in my blood to have to know more and more about a band I'm getting into.
So this looked like a first, and great choice. I figured it'd be in a sense like "The Dirt", the Motley Crue oral biography that had tons upon tons of info about the band.
After getting into this book, it seems it should have been titled "Jane's Addiction and their drug addictions." 60% of the book seems to be about the members drug intake, and really almost nothing else. And there's hardly anything noted at all, about what matters, the music. We don't get any stories or info about how songs came to fruition, how music came together. In the sections where it's covering the time in their career when they're doing an album, you're lucky to get 2 or 3 pages on the entire studio course.
Over all, as a new fan, this book seems to raise more questions than answers. Hardly anything at all is talked about of the Relapse '97 reunion, except the parts of Flea joining the band for it.
If you're a new fan, curious about the band, I would honestly pass this one up. It has nothing that interviews won't tell you so far, I seemed to learn more by searching the web and finding my own info.
If you're interested in Jane's music, this book won't tell you much. If you're interesed in how much Jane's Addiction loved drugs, then you'll enjoy this book.
Great bio of a classic band.......2006-02-24
As someone who refused to even listen to the latest Jane's album (i'll only acknoledge the first 3!), didn't know what to expect from this book, a cheap attempt to wring some cash from an ever-diminishing fan-base? But Jane's is one of those bands... true innovators, and this book is a terrifically detailed account of their story. I was really impressed by the vast amount of interviewees the author was able to bring together in a very coherent manner, including Casey Niccoli and Eric Avery. A must for true fans.
Book Description
Contributions by Michael Bertrand, Barbara Ching, Joli Jensen, Beverly Keel, Pete La Chapelle, Kristine M. McCusker, Jocelyn R. Neal, Emily C. Neely, Diane Pecknold, David Sanjek, Charles Wolfe.
From the smiling, sentimental mothers portrayed in 1930s radio barn dance posters, to the sexual shockwaves generated by Elvis Presley, to the female superstars re-defining contemporary country music, gender roles and imagery have profoundly influenced the ways country music is made and enjoyed. Proper male and female roles have influenced the kinds of sounds and images that could be included in country music; preconceptions of gender have helped to determine the songs and artists audiences would buy or reject; and gender has shaped the identities listeners made for themselves in relation to the music they revered.
This interdisciplinary collection of essays is the first book-length effort to examine how gender conventions, both masculine and feminine, have structured the creation and marketing of country music. The essays explore the uses of gender in creating the personas of stars as diverse as Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, and Shania Twain. The authors also examine how deeply conventions have influenced the institutions and everyday experiences that give country music its image: the popular and fan press, the country music industry in Nashville, and the line dance crazes that created the dance hall boom of the 1990s.
From Hank Thompson's "The Wild Side of Life" to Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue," from Tammy Wynette's "Stand by Your Man" to Loretta Lynn's ode to birth control, "The Pill," "A Boy Named Sue" demonstrates that the role gender played in the development of country music and its current prominence.
Customer Reviews:
A fine timeline of evolutionary events and perspectives .......2005-02-09
What is the underlying story behind Johnny Cash's famous "Boy Named Sue" song? A Boy Named Sue: Gender And Country Music isn't just a survey of one song; it examines the entire issues of gender in country music as a whole, providing scholarly essays contributing to the first book-length effort to examine how gender conventions have structured country music. A chronological arrangement provides a fine timeline of evolutionary events and perspectives making A Boy Named Sue a useful and recommended addition to American Popular Music History reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
Country Music Fans, Gender Matters!.......2005-01-11
I understand that "A Boy Named Sue" is a famous country song. It's even mentioned in the film "Swingers." However, I thought this book would be mostly about gender deviancy or noncomformity, like in Moe Bandy's hit "Where's the Dress?" Still, this was a strong mix of gender studies and cultural studies and I was not disappointed.
This anthology has female and male authors. It analyzes femininity and masculinity in the country genre. Still, it's mostly women's studies. Most authors discuss how female country artists faced and still face double standards that their male peers never have to consider. Like strong cultural studies, this book tries to look at all aspects of art, from production, reception, visuality, and of course to album sells.
Most progressive thinkers have abandoned the idea that identity categories stand alone. The authors here do a great job in juggling multiple balls. Besides gender, class and region are brought up often, and to a small amount so is sexuality. Race is somewhat invisible here. But to the contributors' credit, they analyze the whiteness of the industry and make a point of mentioning that several country artists are of mixed Native American ancestry.
Just as academics try to discuss masculinities, rather than masculinity, this book could have had country musicS in its title, rather than country music in the singular form. The difference between female and male artists is stressed. Further, the Nashville Sound is differentiated from other forms. It's brought up that some artists styled themselves as "Western" rather than "Southern." The book ends with an analysis of a country offshoot called alt.country.
I was surprised to see that a Southern press was publishing books with Southern academics about a Southern genre that is quite comparable to what is being published on the Coasts. The last essays are easier to read than the first, but I think the chapters are set up chronologically. I think many will find the most interesting and useful chapters to be those on the icons, Patsy Cline and Elvis.
This book will reminds many of the cultural studies on rap. Talk of authenticity, developing a regional sound, sexism within the industry, and image counting as much as, if not more than, the music itself comes up often in hip-hop literature. I am sure that a student could write a solid A paper comparing this book to "Black Noise" or other scholarly work on rap.
I am indifferent to country music. Besides I live in a Blue State. Still, I enjoyed this work. The contributors should be commended.

For Price Worth Picking Up..........2002-01-01
Basically I give it 3 stars cuz its average at best book... Nothing really that makes it worth any higher rating... Yet the price I would say makes it a 3 Star book worth thinking about picking up... This is mostly the older versions of the book but there is about 18 pages added for 2001 update... He does not cover certain gambits that I wish he would... Such as the Icelandic(Palme) Gambit and Portugeuse... Others that are left out I do not really mind so much... I did learn that Benko gambit was called Volga Gambit... Also that at a tourny when first unleashed it had 10 wins and 5 draws no loses... So reading that in the past edition of book was rather interesting... Especially since at time of original it was not so widely used... I mostly got it for gambits vs. d4... Some of the gambits I found sorta interesting/worth looking at vs it are as follows... The Henning-Schara, Indian counter gambits such as budapest, Blumenfield, Nimzo Indian defense, Gruenfeld, Modern Benoni, Volga Gambit, Quasi-Volga Gambit, Albin-Counter Gambit, Englund(no real coverage), also some gambits vs. english... Yet nothing really worth mention other then Bellon... Which Bellon really isnt worth mentioning probably... Still it is not the best book, but you may find it interesting... Has coverage of Falkbeer counter gambit and Latvian as you might expect... Dover makes some decent cheap books... This book is about 223 pages so you get a decent value for you dollar... I would say if you want some ideas of gambits as black to use vs white... Take a look at this book and decide for yourself...

A good starting point.......2006-08-18
When I first started reading the book, the concepts seemed extremely easy. However, the book quickly gets into more in-depth material (in an odd order, however). Be sure to follow along in the program while reading for maximum effectiveness. Recommended for anyone who has not used Sonar.
Sonar 5 ignite!.......2006-02-19
This book is really for beginners, as the book states. However the levels of this book is so elementary, that unless you know nothing about sequencers and software of this caliber, then get it . It is well laid out, with lots of visual aid, to help you to start with this great program,of which just about everything
in Ignite is covered in the 10 tutorials that are included in the program.
I was mistaken, thinking that 300+ pages would cover more in depth this software. You probably outgrow this book very quickly .
