This book saved my life........2007-10-06
When I moved back to the States after seven years living and working as an expat in Japan, immediately after working my way through Harvard--which is not as rare as you might think--I had to take a job working in a deli for $8 an hour, moping floors and washing dishes. It was the only job I could get. Everyone--literally everyone--told me that job offers would rain from the sky. But they didn't.
Being a Harvard grad who speaks fluent Japanese and can effectively debate the existance of gravity didn't help much at all. In fact, I have to say it was a real hinderance. There was no mythical 'old boys club' and no one was ready to hire me simply because I was certified smart. Once the initial ooh and aah over my amazing credentials faded, I was just a guy who wanted a paycheck who wasn't of particular use to anyone.
I even visited Harvard's Career Center, and they were very helpful with my presentation--resume, cover letters--and getting interviews with or through fellow alumni/ae. But even that didn't get me the result.
I met with several CEOs of well-known companies who would have hired me if I could only answer the essential questions: What do you do? (I work hard Sir.) What do you want to do? (I want to work hard for you Sir.) And how can you benefit my company? (By working hard of course. Didn't I just answer this question?).
I read a good pile of books on the subject of getting a job: how to write a resume and a cover letter, how to interview, everything written by experts in Human Resources and Career Management, all telling basically the same facts and formula for success with more or less detail. All those books turned out to be not only unhelpful, but actually contributed to my inability to get hired.
The fact is, you don't need to be highly educated and experienced to get the job opportunity you want--whether it's a corporate position, a part in a movie, or as Paris Hilton's personal boy toy. You need to be able to--within the amount of time an elevator ride takes--get someone interested enough in you to give you their contact information, then interview you, and either hire you themselves or recommend you to someone else.
The skills this book teaches are essential for not only getting the opportunity you want, but for keeping it and continuing to attract favorable opportunities. It's not about using key 'power verbs' or other nonsense like whether to put the address of your letter in the middle or at the side--the answer to that is who cares? Not your potential employer, that's for sure. It's about communicating who you are at any opportunity, no matter how short an interval or whatever form that chance may take.
I can't say enough about this book and how glad I am that I read it, because I really would not like to know what I would be doing right now if I hadn't. Seriously, the book is that good. Add that it's the shortest book on this subject I have ever seen, good advice for the powerful executive as it is for someone with modest goals. Even if you're a teenager trying to land the job you want at your favorite store in the shopping mall, this is an invaluable book that will be of use to you not only getting that job but all the ones you come to want in the future.
I am extremely grateful for this book.
P.S. Forgot to say the result. I got my interview by talking to a stranger out for a smoke outside the building where my office is now. I did not ask him for a job or an interview, or how I might apply to his company; I simply asked him what it was that his company does and apparrently impressed him with both my observance and manner. Only after I thanked him and began to walk away did he ask if I had a resume. Two days later he called, the next week I had an interview with his colleague, they took me out to lunch with the heads of the department, and I went through the formalities of H.R.--by which time I was effectively hired already. The job I got by using what this book taught me is with a Fortune 500 company; I doubled the salary I made in Japan; and I'm in a career position now. A genuine success story.
Great Read... Will Get you atleast a second interview!.......2007-08-31
After thumbing through this book I learned more in a few hours than I have in the last 6 months. Like previous reviews have stated its straight forward and to the point. There are a few do's and dont's that are common sense, but you must make that call for yourself. There are also a few suggestions the author made that I feel were slightly inappropriate for certain interviewing situations. If you are an individual with sound mind and judgment then this book will be your guiding light through the oh so dark tunnel of job hunting!!! Good Luck!
This book is a keeper.......2006-12-20
I liked this book because it gives well rounded view of what the interview process is like. Author tells you how to dress, groom and accessorize, prepare objective, make well thought out resume and smart cover letter. You will be thought on how to research the company, prepare for the interview, ask quesitons during the interview and finish with really smart follow up and thank you letter. Negotiation techniques and acceptance letter and great part of the process. Many reference books mentioned here are probably worth reading and I just may do that next.
Sorry, but it was disappointing for me........2004-04-22
I did not find ANY thing there that are new for me. All information was VERY basic.
Besides, I don't think that this book will help you with ANSWER to question "HOW to turn an interview into a job?".
If you don't have any idea about resume and interview I think it's probably better to buy:
1.) Resumes in cyberspace (about e-mail resumes and more);
2.) 10 insider secrets to job hunting success;
3.) Gallery of best resumes;
4.) How to knock `em dead (interview questions).
Also I found "Here is my card "book. I think some info there is interesting and useful.
Good luck!
The Best.......2003-12-04
I left school about 18 years ago armed with a copy of this book. The book helped me get offers or at least second interviews in about 75% of my attempts. From my experience, you'll do quite well in the interview if you take the author's advice. You'll actually feel positive energy flowing during the interview if you are using the techniques from the book.

Book Description
From the creators of WhiteHouse.org comes the guide to success, profit, and eternal salvation in Bush's Executive Branch
WhiteHouse.org, the Internet's most popular political parody, busts the Executive Mansion's elegant doors wide open to take you on a hilariously eye-popping, completely top secret tour through the most guarded-and ridiculous-people, places, prophesies, and policies of the otherwise "on message" world of the George W. Bush Administration. The White House Inc. Employee Handbook reveals the secret life of the White House staffer-from his introduction to senior management (Dick Cheney, commander of the Commander-in-Chief; Donald Rumsfeld, secretary of the smackdown; etc...) to the official Bush policy on hot-button issues (ex: homelessness: eliminate the glut of shelters so these people can finally live up to their name).
Equal parts shrewd business lampoon and political send-up, this is wickedly astute satire at its finest-funny and gutsy, with a frightening, yet familiar ring of that oft-forgotten thing called truth. Welcome to The White House Inc., patriotic worker bee-you picked the winning team!

I didn't like it........2006-07-19
This book was boring and inane. I expected more from the guy who brought us such a politically sarcastic site. I was hoping to laugh, but all I did was fall asleep. I feel that I wasted my money, but did get a chuckle over some of the graphics. This book falls flat. Sorry!

Bush Book A Knock-Out.......2005-08-28
Do you find yourself taking President Bush and his administration seriously? You never will again after reading this gem of satire. Informed by extensive research into the backgrounds of these Executive Mansion denizens, the writers of Whitehouse.org have created brilliant caricatures of them. They are careful where they draw the line of exaggeration on which humor depends. They go far enough to be hilarious without going so far as to be just plain silly. At the same time, I can't help but wonder whether the Bush folks really do have some of the opinions that are attributed to them. It's so hideously plausible.
Don't even know what this means but I'll guess - EXCELLENT.......2005-07-28
I'm sure I'll like it, just haven't had time to go past the first few pages. If bashing the right-wing criminals in the White House is the bottom line, I'm gonna' love it.
Over and Over Again .......2004-10-19
I normal trust the reviews on Amazon more then I did for this book. Many of the reviews rate the book as middle of the road yet the web site is so funny, I was sure I would find the book as humorous. And for the first 30 or so pages I was dead on, it was a laugh riot. I just kept laughing out loud. The sly low key and in your face humor was equally side splitting. The authors were able, at least in the first section of the book, to take the attitude from the web site and use it in this White House employee manual parody. Unfortunately for me, and I would assume many readers, the fresh, sharp humor started to get stale. There is only so many times you can beat that horse and they did not stop. On and on about how the Bush team was out to get richer, destroy the environment and scrap any social program going.
At about page 100 I started to skip sections and hoped the end was near. The lack of originality and new material really started to sour me on the whole book and even a bit on the original web site its self. I am sure that is the exact opposite reaction the authors were looking for. I also started to get a bit turned off by the rather in your face sexism and not so hidden racism. I know it was all part of the parody, but is was a bit much. Lastly the whole pro life / pro choice comments were a bit too edgy for me. Overall my opinion is that this is a perfect book to pick up used and read a chapter every other month. The bits you forget will make the book less repetitive and stale.
Read the site, leave the book.......2004-09-27
How to read this book.
Step 1: Go to your local bookstore and find the book.
Step 2: Read "most" of the book while at the store (most jokes are repetitive)
Step 3: Leave the store without buying the book.
If you follow those steps you'll feel happy that you got to read it and the knowledge that you didn't waste your money on it.
Atleast that's what I did, after reading a few of the reviews on here.

Customer Reviews:
This Book is no joke.......2000-12-22
I originally purchased the second addition of this book. It inspired me to Open my own record store back in 1989. The record store, called Locals Only was based on thing I learned from reading the book and using that knowledge. Here we are almost in 2001 and those principles still stand. We operate a website...that has been vibrant since its launch in 1995. This book is a great starting point for anyone serious about making it as an independent artist.
What a joke!.......2000-02-20
I read one of the original versions of this book. The updated version just took the word "vinyl" out and copied sections of other books I have been using! (Sweeney, Kashif). Buy the books of these two guys. I have seen results with their books. I couldn't even unload this book at a used book store! they already had other copies.
Fate Management: "If you want the $ , buy this book .".......1998-11-25
I received this book at The Art Institute of Philadelpphia as a text book, while I studied Music and Video Business. Before I entered school, I had always been an artist manager. I learned a lot about the industry over the years. "How To Make And Sell Your Own Recordings" became one of my most important guide books. It helped me to aquire the skills to do everything myself. "How To Make And Sell Your Own Recordings" has a lot of valuable information for any artist manager or independent musician. It helps to ensure that you present yourself in a professional way without the need to hire out.

Book Description
I have been a driver since early in 1960. I have traveled over a million miles and have seen some of the strangest driving behavior imaginable. I am sure that the reader will identify with many-probably most of the descriptions. This book is designed to help drivers identify with the behavior described and hopefully avoid similar actions. More importantly it is hoped that it will help drivers act more considerately and kind towards each other. When we show consideration and kindness towards each other, we are likely to avoid confrontation and road rage will disappear. Both acts of kindness and unkindness are described in this book. Make your actions be on the side of kindness! Be observant.Be safe.Be kind.Be considerate.
Book Description
The most influential web design book ever written, completely updated to cover motion graphics, broadband interactive design, and more. Since it was first published in 1995, designing web graphics has been the seminal resource for web designers to learn the basics and then the nuances of solid design for the web. Lynda Weinman has been updating the book to reflect changes in the technologies affecting web design, but dwg.4 has been largely rewritten from the ground up. Included is coverage of motion graphics made possible by the Flash phenomenon, broadband-enabled graphics issues, usability, and more. Lynda is rewriting the book so that all coverage of specific tools is focused on the essential functionality of these programs (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, etc.) and not on version-specific attributes of the software, making the book relevant longer for more users.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, as usual for Lynda ..........2007-10-01
I own a total of (4) of Lynda Weinman's books.
Very detailed, very informative, and an excellent reference to have on your book shelf.
I definitely recommend this author, and this particular book.
In the beginning and the future you need................2007-01-12
I have this book for a long time now. It's a very thorow guide for building a website from the very beginning. And I mean from the moment you are trying to get a customer intrested in your websites. telling you how to reach you customers, builiding a concept, video on your website, etc etc. Lynda is the best. I hope there is going to be a upgrade of this book telling you al the new gadgets.
Designing Web Graphics, 4th Edition.......2006-03-07
This is a good reference book for Web Designers. It covers the basic concepts of color usage on the Web. It also gives many hints and examples of good Web design.
Complete Reference.......2005-12-29
Group 1.
- Do you want to know everything about web graphic design to decide where to dig deeper?
- Are you looking for a colorful reference that contains huge number of websites to help you learn web graphic design?
If so, then this book is for you!
Group 2.
- Are you looking for a book that guides you through steps to perform different tasks in web graphic design?
If yes, then forget about this title!
I will give it 5 stars, because I'm from Group 1
An excellent book for the new web designer.......2005-12-11
I had heard of Lynda before and seen her website, but I had not read any of her books before this one. I was very impressed with the low level detail and lack of too much jargon in this book. It was short and to the point. The book was an easy and quick read due to her design. The book is good for basic reference information on web design. It touches on almost everything you encounter when designing websites. I was able to touch on the important topics and was given the right amount of theory / background necessary to understand the concepts. I found that chapters on information design architecture, colors, frames and cascading style sheets were very helpful. Although I already have a book on colors, I though the color charts were a nice touch. I agree that this book was not created to be the "bible" of web design. It gives you the basics and points you in the right direction for more fact-finding on your own. The links to other resources were also very helpful in that respect.
Overall, I think this is an excellent book for the new web designer, no matter which tool you are using to create the web pages. The broad approach to the design and notes regarding specific browser quirks was invaluable.
