Nice how-to material on the electronic resume, content and formatting. Could profit from including analysis of effectiveness of resume-posting on job sites. If you are interested email me. I am collecting Web job hunting resources available for WI jobs, and found a couple of good references in this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to creat an electronic resume.

Matt Bloom's book is a terrific page-turner about a stand-up guy among the East End's dissolute in-crowd. All the Hamptons' rogues are in this gallery: the egomanical movie star, the callow personal trainer, the avaricious art dealer, the hateful gossip columist, the vacuous super-model. And then there's the hero, Andrew Kane, a struggling fisherman haunted by a grisly discovery that drags him off the wharves and into the limelight. Bloom has a rare talent for the morality tale--a toss-up between stark portraiture and larger-than-life satire. I can't wait to see where he goes after Death in the Hamptons.

Blue Collar Guy Caught in Rich World.......2002-07-23

In his new novel, Matt Bloom shows, once again, his enormous skill at portraying likable, well meaning, blue collar guys struggling with tough life choices. Andrew is a fisherman who falls in with the rich and famous when he is befriended by Jack, movie star and consummate jerk. Bloom portrays the richer residents of the Hampton scene with comic contempt (the gossip columnist who talks to her dog, calling herself "Mommy Goddess")and his book skillfully dramatizes the gaping divide between the haves and the have nots. Bloom writes in a straight-forward, readable, yet highly intelligent prose style (no pretentious sentences here) that is a delight to read. Highly recommended.

a perfect satire.......2002-07-22

I loved this book because it was very dark but at the same time hilarious! The main character is very likable and the minor characters are hysterical. I read it right after I got back from going to the Hamptons for the first time and even though it was completely exaggerated I have to say I thought it was pretty bang-on about a lot of stuff--I think I even met a few of those characters while I was out there! The giant, tacky houses, the manicures and lapdogs, and the constant gossip about who bought what boat or who lives in what house are all spoofed perfectly. It's all magnified a hundred times in this book, which is what makes it so fun to read. It's also got a really juicy plot! So even while you're laughing your...you're sort of drawn into this creepy/glamorous world of debauchery and life in the fast lane, and you really care about what happens to Andrew. I have to say I loved it and I'm recommending it to all my friends. I can't think of a book I've read with more fun per page than this book.

This is a breezy, entertaining, funny book with a serious subtext. Set against the natural beauty of the Hamptons, Bloom's witty portrait of the indulgent summer scene, told through the story of a Montauk fisherman-turned-movie star, skewers everyone from nouveaux riches developers, movie moguls, rap stars, gossip columnists, and unctuous maitre de's while also telling a poignant prodigal-son type tale of self-discovery.
It's neither pure mystery nor pure satire but an original and compelling synthesis that deftly straddles multiple genres -- all the better to convey the clash of the sublime and the ridiculous that has come to characterize the Hamptons. This isn't everyone's Hampton's, but regular tabloid readers will readily recognize many of the larger-than-life characters that people this book. It should be noted, though, that Bloom builds the book around the regulars, the weather-beaten fishermen whose rugged labor puts the food on the tables of the fancy restaurants catering to the Upper East Side set.

Death in Black and White takes a behind-the-scenes look at contemporary funeral practices to discover what similarities and differences exist between African American and European American cultures' experience of dealing with death.

The author charts the divergent origins of such rituals of mourning from pre-colonial Africa and Europe to the time in which these cultural traditions came into contact during the period of American slavery, and the degree of fusion and variation that persists up to the present day.

Based on a foundation of cultural theory and scholarship, the author explores a variety of issues related to race, culture and death ritual practices by immersing himself in the rich narratives and sources of information gleaned from his in-depth interviews with funeral directors, corporate funeral home representatives, clergy and individuals who have recently lost a loved one. Additionally, he has observed numerous funeral and burial services and cemetery landscapes, and has examined federal and state public policies surrounding burial and disposal, as well as other forms of death-related discourse.

Ultimately, the book describes how death rituals both manifest and reinforce different cultural identities, and suggests that perhaps, it is through the experience of death that we might find the most enduring possibilities for promoting greater cultural understanding by maintaining rather than eliminating such differences.

We ARE all in this together........2004-04-15

This is a humane, engaging, and innovative text, written by an author who himself exemplifies integrative, postmodern scholarship. I find that the range of effects and affects in these pages surpasses even what the title suggests. Some readers might find it useful to begin with the final two or three chapters for current, global perceptions, and then return to preceding chapters for historical and more particular approaches. The case studies alone are worth reading the book. Above all, I hear a genuinely consoling voice-one that also offers some of the very best available cultural theory as well as a general theory of consciousness.

McIlwain accomplishes this, first off, with an abiding good will toward the common reader. Secondly, his comfort with first-person narratives offers access to his feelings, as well as to his thinking and scholarship. This affords a wide engagement with the perennial qualities of 'differences' with which we all not only live but also, inevitably, approach the deaths of others (and ourselves). Thirdly, McIlwain has an uncanny manner that, combined with intellectual acumen, makes his point not only comprehensible but also somehow `acceptable'-that we ARE all in this together, from the beginning to the very end.

Great Read - Southern Mystery at it's Best!.......2004-05-18

Just finished Jilted by Death - started it and couldn't put it down. Wonderful Southern small town setting. Actually didn't guess the "who dunnit" to it until it was revealed. I hate it when you can guess the culprit in the first few pages. NOT THIS ONE. Had me guessing til the reveal.

Love the descriptive writing about the small town atmosphere and life. I've actually heard and read about Blowing Rock, NC, so I can easily imagine what that house looked like at the end...you'll have to read it to find out about that.

Willa's a great character - loved the different take on her with her being a young female minister. Mystery of it definitely held my attention and I wanted to "get to the bottom of it."

Hope this author writes a sequel or at least another book with this character. Surely "Willa" has more mysteries to get drawn into. Hope they also keep writing about the small town. The book cover looked a lot like you'd imagine the town to be too.

In all, very descriptive writer with a southern flair. Would definitely read her material again. Hope she'll write more with this character. I'd buy em.

This will help you build your chord vocab but the progressions are pretty cheesy. Tom plays every instrument slapped on each track and the whole thing sounds canned. Many of the progressions sound like they could have been lifted from an elevator music anthology. Disappointed.

I love this learning to play guitar book because it includes ALL kinds of music: rock, country, fusion, bepop, punk, and on and on. Each chapter is a different style of music, so you can flip around to your favorites and learn a bit of everything! As a beginner, I thought the difficulty level was perfect. I learned a lot of new techniques. Only a few of the music pieces (each one is short - not a full song length) were too hard for me. I felt like I improved a lot especially with barre chords and different styles of strumming.

The way I see it, the "Chord Progressions" book/CD is a great companion to the main Musician Institute book for Rhythm Guitar, the "Complete Guide". While the "Guide", another excellent book, builds your playing technique and chord vocabulary and can be used as the main "course book", "Chord Progressions" provides dozens of realistic examples of rhythm guitar as applied in popular music.
"Chord Progressions" is a great value for the money! It is useful for the beginner and intermediate guitar player, as it lays out smart chord progressions and includes 100 well-recorded tracks covering most styles in American popular music, from folk rock to heavy rock, from country to new wave, from soul & funk and reggae to classic rock ballads. Believe me, there are lots! And the guitar sounds right on every track.

If you are a well-rounded music lover that enjoys different styles, particularly from the '60s to the '80s, this book will have something for you. As for me, I am committed to learning ALL of the progressions. I found the music fun and they are a great source for songwriting and jamming inspiration.
Playing the tracks in enjoyable in its own right, but the greatest benefits will come from studying the progressions (rhythm, harmony and melody) and relating it to the famous and worthy music that guided the making of this book.
The author introduces EACH progression with very welcomed info on harmony, suggested playing technique, tricky parts and what makes the track effective. Do not overlook Mr. Kolb's comments as they clarify the "lessons" you should take from the exercise.

As a final remark, please note that the level of difficulty DOES vary from track to track, but NOT in a gradual way. Since the exercises are separated by style rather than difficulty, you might be stuck on a tough "country rock" lick, but if you move a few pages ahead you might find a rock ballad that is much easier. That is just an example, but the message is: browse through the whole book - there are lots to enjoy. Some tracks you might be able to play right away, others will take considerable practice to sound right... But in the end, by the time you master this fine book, you will be ready to join most bar bands in the world! OR perhaps write a hit song based on a "classic" progression.

The other reviews listed have properly situated this book in its proper context; I can add little to those comments.

I will simply say that this may be the best reference book on problems ever written. It's in the top 2 or 3, for sure. If you compose and/or solve problems, this book is a must on your bookshelf.

However, by its sheer breadth of coverage, it may put off a non-specialist chessplayer. There are more gentle introductions available in print, and I would recommend reading them first.

Chess Wizardry: The New ABC of Chess Problems.......2005-09-11

Highly recommended to anyone interested in Chess problems and puzzles, this latest edition of a classic (1996) book presents themes and terms in quasi-alphabetical order with examples. Written in clear and understandable language and using figurine-algebraic notation, the text reflects the author's vast experience in almost every area of problem composition. I am prevented from awarding a 5th star due an annoying publishing flaw - the over-inking of diagrams in the vicinity of page 300 (Problems for Solving) often prevents one from distinguishing a White piece from a Black one (especially difficult with the Queens). I returned my first copy, but reluctantly kept the second when it became apparent that either; 1)every print run suffered the same problem or 2)I got the exact same book back again (this time, used) and it was just meant to be.

Learner's bible for Chess Problem lovers.......2000-03-31

Do you like to solve or enjoy chess problems? There are plentyof books for you giving you great puzzles and problems related tochess. And this is one of the best. Do you want to take chess problems a bit more seriously than mere puzzles or brainteasers? Do you want to learn about various themes in chess problems with great examples? Do you want to understand the chess problem columns in various chess magazines? Do you want to REALY enjoy chess problems? Do you want to compose chess problems? Do you want to learn about selfmates, helpmates and fairy chess? If the answer to any of these questions is "Yes", this is the best book for you. The author, a well-known chess problem composer, has done an excellent work in discussing various themes and making chess problem solving a great pleasure. Warning: This book WILL NOT improve your chess playing skills!

What an awesome book!.......2006-02-26

This book answered so many questions I had about how the Internet works and how enterprises can use BGP in their networks. The writing style is clear and a pleasure to read. I did not notice any errors or typos. This is one of the best Cisco Press books I've read. The material covered is a logical extension (fill-the-gaps) for the knowledge one gains when studying BGP as part of the CCNP/CCDP BSCI exam. The case studies for enterprise BGP core design and Internet connectivity were one of the most interesting and useful real-world scenarios one can strive to implement. Same for the service provider examples. One caution however, this is not "beginner" material. One would greatly benefit from having a CCNP-level understanding of BGP prior to attacking this book.

Advanced BGP Implementation for ISPs.......2006-01-31

I purchased this book both to supplant my knowledge of BGP and as a resource for my CCIE studies. I found the book to be of value more towards practical implementations of BGP. This book is geared toward a high-level architecture - not if only needing to design a 10 node BGP community. One down side is there are not that many configs. On the flip side, nearly every page either has a diagram or show output. One chapter of value is Chapter 8, which focuses on Route Reflection and Confederations. The book also makes good use of Regular Expressions (pg 110) and route conditions - something that is sorely missing in CiscoPress cannon. The last few chapters dive into support for multiprotocol extensions (MPLS VPNs and IPv6). While, upon reflection, I don't believe this book is a necessary tool for the CCIE, it is certainly a book worthy of it's title.

Outstanding, PRACTICAL BGP Book!.......2004-09-02

I would just like to add my comments to the list of reviews: if you work with BGP this book is essential! What makes this book unique is that it is intended for the real-world, production environment engineer, with outstanding results. Personally, I have used this book on two major projects with excellent results; I am sure I would not have been able to find this type of information, knowledge in any single place - if at all - since as another reviewer noted, it distills years of practical experience into a well organized, accessible format. Again, my thanks to Mssrs. Zhang and Bartell for a truly outstanding, practical book that has saved me hours of work, research. Highly recommended!!

Real world BGP - advanced solutions.......2004-04-20

This book provides an excellent reference for understanding advanced BGP designs and implementations. It expands on the general BGP functionality and configuration covered in other BGP books like Internet Routing Architectures (ISBN: 157870233X). If you need a general BGP book or are just starting to learn BGP, start with Internet Routing Architectures to learn about BGP then use this book to understand how to use BGP.

Advanced BGP design concepts are presented in a logical flow and practical design scenarios are included to help you understand how and why the concept is deployed. In addition to advanced BGP designs, topics covered are performance tuning, policy control, Enterprise and Service Provider design guidelines, MPLS VPN, Multicast and IPv6. These are topics not clearly discussed in Cisco documentation with this same emphasis on learning advanced BGP concepts. My only wish (not a complaint in any way) is that a chapter or appendix was included as a general BGP review for reference. Maybe in the 2nd edition as the book is updated? Kudos to the authors and Cisco Press for compiling this information in such a useful and readable book! Highly recommend!!
