Book Description
Take the guesswork out of the most important decision you make! Interviewing and Selecting High Performers Every Manager's Guide to Effective Interviewing Techniques Current studies show that high-quality workers outproduce poor ones by 25% to 50%. Moreover, these findings reveal the alarmingly high direct and indirect costs companies pay when they hire the wrong people. So why, asks Richard Beatty, would you want to rely on "hit-and-miss" approaches to selecting new employees? In his latest practical, career-oriented guide, Beatty says you no longer have to. Instead, this renowned consultant and author shows how you can consistently choose high-quality performers who fit both your company's immediate needs and long-term strategic goals. Interviewing and Selecting High Performers provides you with an integrated, airtight, step-by-step selection process. Using a high-performance predictive model, this system clarifies the key qualifications needed by candidates for high performance of specific jobs and provides a rigorous interview design approach that enables you to objectively measure whether a particular candidate meets that criteria. With the help of reproducible evaluation forms, you're able to accurately weigh the strengths and weaknesses of various prospects and account for the inevitable tradeoffs involved in the selection process, so that you minimize the risks inherent in the employment decision. In addition, Interviewing and Selecting High Performers offers you unmatched support, including:
- Sound, field-tested interviewing techniques
- Step-by-step instructions for designing effective interviews
- Guidance on opening, conducting, and closing the interview, so that you get the information you need while putting your company in the best light
- More than 500 behaviorally-based questions covering 32 topic areas that help you determine a prospect's overall job fitness

Learn a Quantitative Method to Interviewing.......2003-10-23
In my experience as a professional recruiter over 22 years, I have worked with over 2000 managers. Most managers have never been taught how to interview effectively.
Where do managers usually come from? Promotions. Usually, what is one of their first tasks? Fill the position they just vacated. Where in this process were they taught how to interview? They then ask themselves "What questions did they ask me?"
Generally, the Human Resource Department will give them written guidelines about the personal questions that may not be asked, but do not teach them how to conduct effective interviews. Why not? In smaller companies, the Human Resource Manager themselves may not conduct effective interviews because their previous position did not require that training, and they are "too busy" in their current position to be trained.
This leaves it up to you, the hiring manager. "Interviewing and Selecting High Performers" by Richard Beatty provides you with an excellent foundation to prepare for an interview. He demonstrates why people are an organization's most important resource (People control all of the resources). He provides you with an exercise to demonstrate the cost of a poor hire - should scare you into becoming a manager who selects high performers.
Mr. Beatty walks you through structuring the interview, provides you with 500 or so behaviorally based questions (However, I would shy away from the personal questions), and suggests a structured interview. His structured interview requires a lot of work. However, at the end, you and your interviewing team will be able to give each candidate a numerical grade. The managers that I have taught to use this system swear by it. Personally, I guarantee that if you ever hire someone who received a "34" on their interview because "my gut told me this is a good person", after being disappointed with their performance, you will never do it again.
I would suggest that you also read "Topgrading" by Bradford Smart and then blend the two processes together. Selecting high performers is one of a manager's most important jobs. Congratulations on searching to find a way to be more effective. www.recruiterguy.com

Customer Reviews:
Powerful tool for building a consistent hiring process that works for you!.......2007-04-20
This book provides you with 45 effective strategies that you can pick and choose from to develop a hiring methodology that YOU feel comfortable with and WORKS FOR YOU. I just got off the phone with a friend that I hired several years ago as a sales rep who is now recruiting and managing a sales force at another company. I told him that if he could only read one book on interviewing, this was the one. In close to 20 years of hiring salespeople, this is the most practical and useful book that I've encountered. The content is great and I enjoyed the writing style and the aesthetics of the book as well. It's a fun, interesting and rewarding read!
People are not losers, Attitudes and Behaviors are........2007-03-24
I believe that any author who would catagorize people as being losers, is a part of the problem and not the solution. God would not want us to ever give up on our fellow human beings; He would want us to forgive and not discard people as if we were some disposable commodity. Businesses will never survive as long as we think only about the "bottom line".
Good for people who do a few critical hires.......2005-01-20
I bought this book because it was written by a Psychiatrist and looked like a methodical, psychological approach to hiring. It is a good book, but it has some limitations.
The book is organized temporally by stages of the interview process. There are forty-five topics that present ideas for how to interview candidates at each stage. The book covers all the common interview processes, but also presents creative and original approaches that are intended to reveal personality or character. One example I really like is meeting the spouse. I have asked to go out to dinner with potential bosses and their spouses to see what kind of people they are (and they get to meet my wife, too, which has frankly been to my advantage).
Overall, the strategies presented are good, but many people would say they are too time consuming for use in hiring a lot of people. I would be surprised if a Fortune 500 company used the complete strategy for routine hires. But most of us are not hiring a lot of people, so that is not an excuse for not using good ideas. Hiring key people, such as executives, should be a methodical and careful process. So should hiring just one programmer to add to your six person team.
I have two concerns about the strategies presented. The first is that foreign-born people may respond differently than expected to psychological things. For example, if you ask some people the meaning of the phrase "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones," they will misunderstand the question because it is culturally linked. By the same token, one question in the book abstractly described playing the game Monopoly, but some people would not understand because they know nothing about parlor games. Because of America's rapidly growing multi-culturalism, I am hesitant to employ some of these strategies.
The other danger of being too sophisticated is that we may reach beyond our qualifications to interpret the results. I would be very interested in employing the services of Dr. Mornell to interview an executive candidate since he is an experienced and knowledgeable Psychiatrist. I would be wary of trying to draw too many conclusions myself about the psychological make-up of a candidate. It is also true that a certain amount of finesse and talent is needed or else you will not get meaningful results.
The approach presented in this book is intellectual and requires a great deal of effort. If you are looking for an easy road to hiring great people, I wish you luck, but this book isn't it anyway. If you have the time and determination to implement these ideas, you might get good results with the caveats I pointed out above. I can say that I certainly enjoyed reading the book and got some great ideas from it.
Great ideas, sketchy writing.......2004-07-08
If you're looking for ideas about how to extend, deepen, or accelerate an existing hiring process, this book is full of excellent ideas. The author clearly has considerably experience and if you follow his advice and pick the techniques that best match you and your organization you'll find the book helpful.
However, if you're looking for an introduction to hiring practices or interviewing in general, look elsewhere. The anecdotes are compelling but disconnected--use this as a source book.
Simply a "Must-Read" Tool for Employeers.......2003-08-24
Hiring Smart is an exceptional "must-read" tool for any hiring manager... and anyone looking for a job. In today's world when hiring poorly can lead to expensive mistakes, it is more important now than ever to get the "right" person in an organization.
Hiring Smart is simply one of the best tools around for hiring employees. It is original and excellent - I cannot recommend it enough.

Customer Reviews:
Too Vague On Important Topics.......2005-11-23
This is a good book overall, but relatively brief when it comes to certain topics. He covers replacement of heads and basic tuning principles fairly well, but doesn't write extensively on maintenance of drum heads.
For those of us who can't afford to put new heads on a set every month or two, we need a book that covers the fine art of periodic re-tuning more extensively. I'd shop around a bit more before purchasing this book.
Good for Beginners.......2005-10-06
I found the instruction in this book and dvd to be very useful for tuning my drumset. I used to tune them from the advice of friends who've played longer than me, but I found that by doing it the proper way, it's much easier to get the tone and the sound I wanted. Great intruction!
Not Bad..........2005-06-17
I was most keen on learning how to tune drums and purchased this book because I wanted a complete guide in one package. The included audio CD is a good supplement, but as another reviewer said, a DVD would have been better. It's hard for me to have to use the left/right panning of some of the examples to guess which lug on the particular tom the guy is talking about when he hits the head of the tom tom hes describing.
However, I have learnt a few technical issues with drums that I never came across anywhere else! So I'm happy with that. If you've never learnt proper tuning before, this book is a good place to start, but I wish I could find a book that had a greater in-depth resource to finer points of tuning and some video examples too to make each point better explained.
A very informative book!.......2004-06-26
I have been away from drumming for 18 years. I recently bought a used kit (Pearl Masters BRX) and thought it would be a good idea to replace the heads. Obviously I hadn't tuned a drum in years so I needed some help. This book is very informative and covers every detail relating to drum heads and tuning. I do think the audio CD falls a little short. A DVD would be better, but the book is so good I'd recommend it even if the cd weren't included!

Customer Reviews:
Which Book am I Reviewing?.......2001-07-10
The photo of the cover shows a book called, "Smartsuite X For Dummies". The title beside the photo says, "Lotus Smartsuite Millennium Edition For Dummies".
"Millennium Edition For Dummies" is about release 9.5, and isn't a bad book for a rank beginner, but I had to buy several other books to really figure out most of what this book promised (like sharing data between the various programs in SmartSuite, which is addressed nowhere in the book but on the front cover, as far as I could tell).
"Smartsuite X" is (presumably) about release 10, which I don't have, so I haven't read this book.
If I do upgrade to release 10, though, I won't bother to buy the "Dummies" book. The QUE book "Using SmartSuite Millennium Edition" was a much better tutorial on 9.5, so I'd sooner buy the release 10 edition of that book instead.
As far as I can tell, anyone who wants to build stand alone applications with Lotus needs to learn Uncle Bill's Visual Basic Script language (VBS), which isn't really addressed in any Lotus book I've seen (Duh!). Might as well learn DBase or FoxBase; you can do a lot more a lot easier.
Junk and nonsense.......2000-06-18
Trying to learn Lotus or Approach from this book is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. It's great to know all the great possiblites, but some guidence in how to define data in the cells and entering a formula for a cell. I want $ signs and decimal points in my data. I know how to write a formula, but where do I find in your book, how to enter it? Yes, I want to know what the programs can do,(I already know much of that) but I need to know how to make the entries and definations. That's the reason I bought your book.
Great Basics for Lotus Smartsuite 2000.......2000-04-06
Since I had never used Lotus Smartsuite, this book provided me with the basics to understand all of Smartsuite's components, and how to use them. I found the "tips" particularly useful. The linking information that tells you how to share your data from one part of the suite to another is great. The index helps you easily locate the information you need. This is an excellent resource for any Lotus Smartsuite novice.
