4 out of 5 stars very helpful on how to approach job interviews.......2005-02-05

Some very helpful tips on how to give a good show. I only wish they had a longer section on suggested answers to common questions.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book, I can't say enough about it!.......2004-12-15

I love this book. It is something I read before every interview, and I am 6 for 6. It does a very good job of giving you an overview of questions to expect during an interview, and also good ways and bad ways to answer those questions. Whether you are preparing for your first interview, or you have been through a million interviews, I think this book is definitely a worthwhile read. I plan to buy a copy of this book for each of my friends who are soon to be in the job search process.

FYI: I am a 20 yo college junior.

4 out of 5 stars I got a job thanks to this book!.......2003-09-22

I was always nervous during my interviews, I did not know what to expect on an interview. After reading this book I feel more confident; it gives you model answers to the questions, professional appearance tips, how to deal with different kind of interviewers, and many more.... I GOT A JOB!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2003-03-18

Just as entertaining as the other Dummies books I've read.
Substancial, informative, a good read.

Great Book! It gave me insights to things like which questions to ask an interviewer, attitude (I'm checking out the place of employment too), and original practice questions.

                Book Description

The convergence of several technological and economic factors, in particular the rapid increase in the cost of communication, is introducing the possibility of profound changes in business. For the first time in history, this book theorizes, it has become possible for businesses to reach previously incompatible ideals—the efficiency of an economy possessed by large companies and the human benefits such as those exhibited in smaller companies: freedom, motivation, and flexibility for employees.

Continuing his delightful tour of cherished American institutions, the writer who explored grocery stores in Can You Trust a Tomato in January? and hardware emporiums in Did Monkeys Invent the Monkey Wrench? now takes readers down the aisles of the corner drugstore, the heart of small-town America.

Staten re-creates the glorious array of salves, patent medicines and mysterious lotions packed on drugstore shelves, bringing to life the trusted pharmacist who explained it all. His charming stories will stir up a host of memories: the dating rituals conducted at the soda fountain; those life-changing decisions about hair coloring; and perhaps those whispered requests for condoms.

                                Book Description

Teenage hell has never been captured with such intense honesty as these actual letters sent in the late '80s from a suicidal girl to the singer of her favorite band.

Go Ask Ogre peers into the world of a misfit "cutter" who lives with an abusive mother in the rust belt. A tailspin of suicidal depression and self-injury leads her to write Ogre, front man for the industrial rock band Skinny Puppy. Soon he receives a flood of elaborately illustrated letters and journals filled with Jolene's most intimate thoughts-from her most painful secrets to hilarious observations and lucid realizations about her life and those around her.

At a concert, Ogre confides to Jolene that he has saved all her letters. Nine years later, a box from Ogre arrives at Jolene's door. Re-examining the documents, she realizes that writing these letters had saved her life.

Go Ask Ogre compiles Jolene Siana's actual letters, artwork, illustrations, and ephemera into a unique and powerful story of an extremely troubled teen who made it through the worst years of her life, and, through the power of music and art, transformed herself in the process. It is heavily illustrated and full color throughout.

                                Critical Praise:

"Pure, lucid and engaging...more authentic for a new generation of young women than, say, the 1971 cautionary tale about drugs, Go Ask Alice."-Susan Carpenter, LA Times

                                "Dark, funny and touching..."-boingboing.net

"Cringingly confessional, persistently desperate, yet often uproariously funny. All rendered and packaged in labor-intensive psychedelic outsider graphic design. An overdue riposte to the bludgeoning morality of the fabricated Go Ask Alice."-Doug Harvey, LA Weekly

"By turns fierce, funny, heartbreaking and wise, Jolene Siana's Go Ask Ogre burns onto the page in an intense collage of words and images that together create a portrait of a gifted young woman fighting to hang on to her own life and choosing an unlikely-but strangely suitable-ally for her battle."-Caroline Kettlewell, author of Skin Game

"Amidst the cultural and political corruption of the late 1980s, seeking and artistic teens like Jolene Siana found cathartic solace in aggressive and so-called 'morbid' bands like Skinny Puppy. That she persevered with the help of music that parents, preachers, and politicians condemned, but rarely tried to understand, is a moving lesson."-Alan Rapp, editor of The Journey is the Destination: The Journals of Dan Eldon and Dan Eldon: The Art of Life

I loved this book and read it from front to back in one sitting. It is a great look inside the mind of a teenager. It takes you through all of her stuggles with unedited brutal honesty. It is easy to relate to her moments as a young woman growing up and her issues.

Jolene Siana's collection of letters and artwork sent to Ogre, from the band Skinny Puppy, is a moving chronicle of a girl's struggle to find place and meaning for herself at an age that is normally awkward at best. I found great beauty in this very human quest for self discovery and identity.

In his Basketball Diaries -- also a dark coming-of-age tale, no coincidence there -- Jim Carroll wrote, "I want to be pure." Jolene Siana, in a book that bravely lets light into the darkest corners of her tortured teenage years, offers readers just that -- a visceral, unblinking, honest look at her own struggle to be pure, to simply become. The letters and artwork that compile this book may have been therapeutic. They may have even helped the author survive. And bringing them together years later may have helped her yet again. But this isn't a self-indulgent book. It's a generous and open one. It's really Siana's readers -- anyone who feels lost, alone, and in need of connection; anyone searching for something pure in a world that's anything but -- who benefit here. This book is a gift.

I can't stop reading this book. I'm not much of a reader but Jolene is an awesome writer. I can relate to it in so many ways. I'm a huge fan of Ogre. I love Jolene's artwork and the part about making handcrafted envelopes for each letter. ^ _ ^

If you observe American pop culture, you'll recognize the questions Mark Edmundson raises in Nightmare on Main Street: Why are the 1990s seeing a resurgence of the gothic? Why do tabloid stories about people such as O. J. Simpson and Lorena Bobbitt captivate the public imagination? Why are "goth" fashions and music in vogue? Why is sadomasochistic sexuality on the rise? And what about the craze for what Edmundson calls "pop transcendence," the phony innocence exemplified by Forrest Gump, angels, and the inner child? Nightmare on Main Street is well written and accessible, and will be of interest to anyone appreciative of (or concerned about) horror books and movies. As Richard Rorty writes, "[This] book argues that America now has a bloated Id, a lascivious and cruel Superego, and almost no Ego at all: almost no moral resolution or political will." Edmundson's proposed solution is kind of vague, but he acknowledges the positive, creative role of horror: he proposes that we "take Gothic pessimism as a starting point and come up with visions that, while affirmative, never forget the authentic darkness that Gothic art discloses."

                                Book Description

Once we've terrified ourselves reading Anne Rice or Stephen King, watching Halloween or following the O. J. Simpson trial, we can rely on the comfort of our inner child or Robert Bly's bongos, an angel, or even a crystal. In a brilliant assessment of American culture on the eve of the millennium, Mark Edmundson asks why we're determined to be haunted, courting the Gothic at every turn--and, at the same time, committed to escape through any new scheme for ready-made transcendence.

Nightmare on Main Street depicts a culture suffused with the Gothic, not just in novels and films but even in the nonfictive realms of politics and academic theories, TV news and talk shows, various therapies, and discourses on AIDS and the environment. Gothic's first wave, in the 1790s, reflected the truly terrifying events unfolding in revolutionary France. What, Edmundson asks, does the ascendancy of the Gothic in the 1990s tell us about our own day?

And what of another trend, seemingly unrelated--the widespread belief that re-creating oneself is as easy as making a wish? Looking at the world according to Forrest Gump, Edmundson shows how this parallel culture actually works reciprocally with the Gothic.

An unchecked fixation on the Gothic, Edmundson argues, would result in a culture of sadomasochism. Against such a rancorous and dispiriting possibility, he draws on the work of Nietzsche and Shelley, and on the recent creations of Toni Morrison and Tony Kushner, to show how the Gothic and the visionary can come together in persuasive and renovating ways.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best & most accessible academic books I've read.......2004-08-04

I asked myself why this fine book generated so many negative reviews on Amazon, and I have concluded that the answer is - because it is an academic book. It is a book on critical and literary theory (although it deals with horror and Gothicism).
Unfortunately the title of the book has misled people to believe it another Joe Bob Briggs type of book, which it definitely isn't. Having said that you will find comments on Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween in "Nightmare on Main Street" but those comments deal with what's under the surface in these films (hidden meanings).
Some people (mostly non-academics) will find some of those comments labored and dry, but hey I am a big horror buff and an academic and I love Edmundson's book. He makes some incredibly intelligent observations about Romanticism, Gothic literature and horror films. Also if you ever wanted to understand Freud, Derrida and Nietzsche, Edmundson offers some of the best summaries I have come across on these great thinkers.
This is a great mind at work, and the connections may sometimes seem stretched but Edmundson will always tie things up (often with a twist) and leave you gasping for more.

I only made it up to p. 45 for a paper I was writing on "Carrie." Along with a pompous tone, I didn't find this added anything concrete to what I know about horror flicks. The author might have found the Main Street and nightmare metaphors personally powerful for some reason, but they were idiosyncratic and I didn't find them in any of my other horror movie secondary sources. Not interested in having a conversation with myself, I moved on. Also, I'm put off by the author's need to see violence, sex, and greed in almost every detail of these films. Even Carrie and other horror movies have their moments of reflection and thoughtfulness that the author was too quick to suppress.

4 out of 5 stars Scarfication Is Powerful!.......2002-02-21

Edmundson has got hold of a powerful idea here: that strategies and characters of Gothic literature have burst out of the realm of fiction and infiltrated our public life. While he sometimes pushes his broadly defined notion of the Gothic too far (it sometimes it seems as if everything belongs to the realm of the Gothic depending on his say so), for the most part he does stick to his original definition of a hero/villain, haunted structures, seduced and screaming heroines and the occasional heroic rescuer.

He suggests, quite believably, that the powerful Gothic themes, have been used by Marx (the capitalist as vampire), and by Freud (humanity haunted by the past, in the grip of infantile memory which dooms us to behavior we can never fully escape except with the help of modernist magicians like Freud). Moving from the talk show (where families reenact Gothic scripts wherein hero/villains describe their inexplicably destructive behavior without understanding or regret as their families hurl abuse at them), to movies (pick just about anything including Disney films), Edmundson strikes at the root of the malevolent vine of the Gothic, a vine which snakes through our political life - Gothic monsters such as Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden, through our social life - our collective perception that we are in danger even in the most benign circumstances.

He does see hope for using the Gothic the way it was intended: to throw off the dead hand of the past, originally the aristocratic, then the plutocratic, or therapeutic, now bureaucratic hand of power and discipline. His writings on Freud are particularly incisive on the therapeutic hand. Here's a quote: "Freud, in his most resolutely Gothic moods, believed that we never forget anything, so that every past moment is stored somewhere in the psyche... He also thought, at least at times, that *any* negative event that befalls us -- no matter how apparently contingent -- is in some measure the result of our guilty need for punishment, our wish to self-destruct. Edmundson also notes that Foucualt and Derrida and other "new" critics favor the Gothic as well. And if you think of Foucault's evocative prose style, and Derrida's "terrorism," Edmundson has a point, a minor point, but a point nonetheless.

The Cold War Gothic has now been replaced by the Terrorist Gothic, the apocalyptic version of Gothicism. George W. Bush whips up the external apocalyptic Gothic, while at the same time we're being terrorized internally by the second variety of the Gothic - the "terror" gothic - in this case, the recession terror gothic. The Gothic can be a powerful tool for critiquing the status quo. The problem is, it has become the status quo, and, unlike "healthy" Gothic horror, it never opens out into new territory now. Instead, we're all doomed, doomed, doomed!. Edmundson notes a few exceptions: the first Nightmare on Elm Street by Wes Craven for one. I heartily agree on that score!

1 out of 5 stars Just Plain Wrong........2002-02-09

I admit that I didn't do more than skim this book. As a horror fan I couldn't get past the authors' factual error in stating that the early 1990's was a pinnacle of horror. WRONG! In terms of the number of horror films released the height would be the mid-1980's. In terms of box office returns it would be the mid-1970's (The Exorcist, Jaws, The Omen, Carrie, Halloween). We are now (2002) at a much higher peak for horror than the period that the Professor calls the pinnacle; the early 1990's was actually a nadir.

1 out of 5 stars Divine prophesy falls flat.......2001-09-25

The first exasperating aspect of this book is its overambitiousness. Through some divine insight, it purports to explain ALL of American culture (almost) through the trope of the gothic. Forrest Gump, Tonya Harding, Walt Whitman, Wordsworth. They're all in there. Moreover, it uses broad brush strokes that hide more than they reveal. Its second offensive characteristic is a tone that's self-righteous. It stands far above the foibles of all these pathetically mortal characters.

                                4 out of 5 stars A Must-Have For V. C. Andrews Fans.......2003-03-29

If you're a V. C. Andrews fan, then this trivia and quiz book is certainly a must-have. It contains a lot of information, though it only covers from "Flowers in the Attic" to "Midnight Whispers" (a brief summary of "Darkest Hour" is given though)--which is fine by me, because I thought her earliest books were her best anyway.

Most of "The V. C. Andrews Trivia and Quiz Book" is devoted to analyzing the fifteen novels with plot summaries, quizzes, and random facts for each one. There's an adequate two-page biography of V. C. Andrews, as well as a "Publishers Weekly" interview of her near the end, and a crossword puzzle (I have yet to even attempt it).

The last part of the book is devoted to the "Flowers in the Attic" movie, giving a scene-by-scene description, as well as an interview with Kristy Swanson, who played Cathy Dollanganger. While this section is entertaining, it seemed that Spignesi wanted to somehow work Swanson in to the book, because the interview begins to detour from "Flowers in the Attic" and V. C. Andrews after awhile; plus he includes part of her filmography and other odd info. I did enjoy Wes Craven's attempt at writing a script for the movie, though; it would have certainly been interesting if he had had his way with it.

While the book as a whole is very good, there were some rather pointless and unnecessary facts thrown in, like a list of common chapter titles (wow, someone had way too much time on his hands), and the whole "Leafing Through..." section was pretty much worthless; it just describes mundane things, like "4 of the Different Types of Clocks in Whitefern" and "10 Nasty Names Cindy Called Bart" (these are just two of many useless lists). But, overall, this is a terrific book. Spignesi really did his homework. Highly recommended, as well as "V. C. Andrews: A Critical Companion" by E. D. Huntley and/or "Faces of Fear" by Douglas E. Winter.

3 out of 5 stars Who Cares What Heaven Wore When She Got Engaged?.......2002-08-15

I found that the trivia questions were far too preoccupied with what certain characters wore at various stages of their life. I would have preferred better questions, but that's just because I do not pay much attention to clothing, cars, and money. I care about characters, MEANINGFUL events and dialogue. To heck with the rest. Another thing, there were so many mistakes. Some names were wrong, but perhaps the author intended that for the final quiz question. But there was some incorrect information in the "Leafing through" sections and also in some of the quiz questions. However, there was some interesting information in this book on the Flowers in the Attic movie, Kristy Swanson and the quizzes were fun nonetheless.

I got this book for my PC Technology Class, I've used it for 2 weeks, and I just hate this book. The thing that gets me mad the most is that its ALL OVER THE PLACE. They'll be talking about the BIOS, then go to expansion slots for like 3 pages, and then go back to Bios's again (pg 197-208). It's very confusing to follow, they should have sections, instead of cramming everything without header titles. The only good thing I like about it is that is has a lot of info, but if you have the time, and patience to find it, then this book is probably OK for you.

Taking a computer class one night a week is more than enough for any average person w/ a full-time job. After the registration, the school location and the reality of how much books cost new these days. Amazon came through for me a week before class and this was after tracking all the various campuses and tips from friends. Buying the book used same me easily $30 to $40. The is in great condition, you would of thought it was new.

I enrolled in an online course with Thomson Education Direct (which has recently changed to Penn Foster). The course was designed to prepare me to pass the A+ exam and this textbook was part of the package I received after I graduated. The book is loaded with information and includes end-of-chapter questions and exercises to help you prepare for the A+ exam, plus a CD with further instructional material and test questions. I take the tests first thing, to see where I stand, and find that, unfortunately, the test questions are riddled with mistakes, but I think, No problem. Though the book is a fifth edition, the CD is probably a new thing and that could account for the mistakes. I'll just use the textbook to check the test questions and make sure they're correct.

Unfortunately, the textbook, because it is designed to be used in a classroom setting, provides no answers for the end-of-chapter questions and exercises, so if you're studying independently, it's impossible to check your work to make sure you're correct. I thought, No problem. The student manual lists an instructor's edition which comes with an Electronic Instructor's Manual, Solutions to all the end of chapter material, ExamView, PowerPoint presentations, Figure Files and a Daily Lesson Planner. All you have to do, according to the ad, is go to the listed website (http://www.course.com/pcrepair). So, I go to the site, type the author's name, Jean Andrews, into the search box, up comes the book, and I order it, no sweat. With shipping it runs right around $83.00, a lot for a book, but since it will prepare me for the A+, I'm willing to spend the money.

Unfortunately, it's a waste. The book that arrives is exactly like the student's manual I already have, no answers to any questions at all. I think, No problem. I'll just call customer service to see when the additional resources are going to arrive.

Unfortunately, I am told I can't get the additional resources, because I am not an instructor. Not only that, I learn that because I am a private buyer, I cannot send the Instructor's Edition back and get a refund. Two facts they fail to mention on either the website or in the student's text. I am also informed that the additional resources, supposedly included with the textbook, come at an additional cost. I think, Now, we've got a problem. I'm out $83.00, and Thomson's attitude seems to be "Too bad, so sad." Not exactly what I expect when this entire misunderstanding is due to their faulty advertising.

I'm sorry I ever ran across Thomson, if this is the best they can do for their customers. They seem to be a lot more concerned with preventing cheating than helping someone get certified, because this textbook was provided to me AFTER I graduated from their course when the resources that could help me answer the questions were no longer available to me. Also, you have to wonder, if all the instructor's resources aren't available to the average joe, why are they listed in the student's manual with a source where you can buy them? When I get my A+ certification, I'm sorry to say it will be in spite of Thomson, not because of them.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Good luck.......2006-02-14
