Bernstein appears to like the Hollywood entertainment types, and so the mothers he choses for his little interviews and stories are the mothers of Spielberg, Bob Dylan, Gene Simmons, and another twenty or so other 'stars'. In his introduction Bernstein makes the claims that Jewish mothers are like all other mothers but only more so, that is in the caring, worrying, pushing end of things. It was interesting to hear the mother of Bob Dylan stand up for him and for whatever turn he happened to take, religious-wise, or any other wise.
This stuff especially consider the great weight of most of the personalities included is 'fluff' but it is pleasant fluff. It is also nice that Bernstein has a chapter on his own mother who he pays tribute to.

              2 out of 5 stars Commonplace.......2006-07-01

I should have read the reviews more carefully before I bought this book. I would have been happier with the original sheet music as these arrangements were uninteresting--basically embellishments that any pianist with some experience could add on their own. At least the sheet music would have included the words. If you are looking for arrangements with pizzazz (a little "wow!" factor here and there), don't buy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great songs, challenging arrangements..........2004-03-10

This arrangement of songs by Dan Coates is definately challenging. I actually have to practice to get through these. Not for the beginning piano player. This book is for moderate to advanced talent levels. Great songs like Desperado, Angel Eyes, The Rose, Open Arms and more. My only complaint is that delivery time was VERY slow. Took nearly a month to receive.

4 out of 5 stars Wow! This book is GREAT!.......2004-02-21

For some time now I have been looking for a book that would challenge me and make me practice! Most of my books I have played for years and as a result I don't have to work to play any of my music. So, I started looking for some advanced books and came across this book by Dan Coates. I've had it just over a month and love it! I've love all the "extras" that have been added! I'm back on Amazon looking for more books by Dan Coates! If you are looking for a book to challange you, and a book that you will enjoy while learning each song, then you need to buy this book!!! You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best I've seen.......2003-03-26

This book almost single-handedly got me back into piano playing after a 20-year hiatus. I've never been happy with the arrangements in most popular sheet music, especially "PVG" and "Easy Piano" sheets -- they are too simple and have almost no left hand accompaniment to speak of. Generally, there are no chords or arpeggios -- just single note "plink, plink, plink" etc. while the right hand has to carry the whole song.

On the other hand, many of the arrangements in this book (and in Dan Coates "Advanced" and "Professional Touch" books in general) have *wonderful* left-hand accompaniments and dramatic chording and other nice touches for the right-hand. Difficulty ranges from intermediate ("The Rose", "Open Arms") to advanced ("I Will Always Love You").

Sure, if you're talented enough to arrange for yourself you might find fault, but for those of us who just read and play and like to play popular music, this is an exceptional book.

              3 out of 5 stars Not a good idea.......2001-07-25

Sheet books of contempoary music, I have found, are generally a bad idea. They are usually mediocre arrangements that take away the beauty of a song that was never intended for a solo instrument. This compilation is no exception and many of the arrangements are unacceptable rips. I found many of the arrangements in this collection are "light" and unappealing. But admittedly the fault is more in the genre of music than in the arrangements per se.

The musician advanced enough to read this music will gain more satisfacaction trying to arrange the songs himself from a public domain chord sheet! If you're desperate and really need to play some popular music on the spot, it might be worth investing in this book.

4 out of 5 stars ALMOST completely adoring 'The Adoring Audience'.......2000-07-03

'The Adoring Audience' is a collection of essays by academics, journalists and other writers about fans, 'fandom' and fan behaviour. All articles shed light in one way or another on the phenomenon of fandom from a number of different persepctives: John Fiske writes about 'The Cultural Economy of Fandom'; Cheryl Cline looks at female rock 'n' roll fans; Lisa Lewis examines fan stories on film; and Joli Jensen alerts us to the dangers of dismissing ardent fans as 'pathological.' Both Elvis fans and 'Beatlemania' come under the microscope too. The articles are presented without apology or explanation or with any idea that there should be a cohesion of position across the entire volume (unless of course it is that 'fandom' is interesting!). As a result, a chapter which clearly 'pathologises' fans follows on from an article which states that it is unhelpful to do precisely that. There are many contradictions in the ideas in this book. I liked that. It really made you examine the arguments put forward more rigorously. I think I am only rating it a four star book because I don't really feel it is the 'last word' on this subject. It was a great place to start to think about fans and fandom, but at the end of it I did not feel as though the experience of being a fan and the taboos associated with fandom in society had been emptied of charge and meaning and mystery. I think perhaps my favourite chapter was Fred and Judy Vermorel's 'A Glimpse of the Fan Factory' - a collection of extracts from fan letters to celebrities like Kate Bush and David Bowie, excerpts from radio and television shows too - in which fans unguardedly write and speak their minds about their fan objects. Although some of the writers are clearly deeply disturbed and 'unusual' - and some bizarrely unselfconscious and naive - some of these letters have a curious beauty and power which is difficult to describe . . . little pieces of people's hearts and lives, sent out to the adored they will never meet. Amazing reading.

Reviewer's note: There are actually TWO different versions of the second edition of this book, and book sellers VERY OFTEN confuse the two and list them in the wrong place (so it is best to always ask beforehand to be safe). For this reason, I have included this review under both the 1992 and 1996 versions of this book (so please excuse me if you see it more than once). However, since I didn't know where most buyers would start, I figured it was best to provide this information under all relevant locations to be safe. That said:

This is the classic D6 version of the Star Wars Roleplaying game. If you are reading this, you likely already know of have heard that the West End Games version of Star Wars The Roleplaying Game is excellent (many people don't know this, but this is actually the basis for the newer Star Wars D20 RPG and Minis games, though many people think the original D6 version is even better). And this book is no exception (especially the 1996 version -- see below). This one book contains pretty much everything both the player and the GM need to play (though there are lots of great supplements -- including premade adventures -- you can use if you are interested and can find them). The book begins with a very nice "Player Section" that covers everything the player needs to know about creating and playing a character. The rest of the book is for the GM. For example, the "Gamemaster Section" covers all the basics that the GM needs to know run an adventure (including rules, combat and injuries, movement, space travel, the Force, etc.). There is also an "Adventure Section" (contains tons of ideas about designing adventures) and a "Universe Section" (provides tons of detail about GM characters, aliens/monsters, weapons/equipment/vehicles, droids, planets, etc). Finally, there are several appendices (with reference charts and character templates). In sum, if you are interested in giving this game a try, you can do so as both a player and a GM with this one book!

In addition to providing the above information about the book, I also wanted to make an important point of clarification re: the two different versions of the second edition of this book.

The first version of this book is simply subtitled "Second Edition" -- this one was released in 1992 (WEG40055 -- ISBN = 0-87431-181-0), and has a mostly blue cover with a picture of Darth Vader in a square on the front. This is still a fun book to read (and usually costs a lot less than the 1996 version). But, it DOES NOT contain the latest/final version of the rules. Further, thought the production quality is excellent, it is not quite as good as the 1996 version.

The second version is subtitled "Second Edition: Revised and Expanded" -- this one was released in 1996 (WEG40120 -- ISBN = 0-87431-268-X). It is also a hardcover, and has a picture of the Millennium Falcon racing through space while being fired upon by several TIE fighters. This book DOES contain the latest/final rules for this game. Further, the production quality is excellent, and it is printed in full color on high quality semi-gloss paper.

YOU DO NOT NEED BOTH VERSIONS OF THIS BOOK. If you just want to get a feel for the game and save a little money, buy the 1992 edition. In fact, if this is the case it may be worth buying the original first edition (which was released in 1987, and is also excellent and reasonably priced). However, if you want the latest/final version of the rules, than the 1996 edition is a must (it costs more, but I think it is worth it).

5 out of 5 stars A must buy for people who love games and love Star Wars.......2001-11-19

This is the book. I mean "The Book" as my friends and I call it... I'm serious. If you love star wars, and you love either games or acting, this is what you need, plus six sided dice, paper, and the pencil you will have to have to play this game. It's not all mindless action the way D&D is! It has a lot of social interaction, teamwork, and problem solving! But it still has action! It's just not omnipresent is all. The action is very cinematic, giving a true starwars feel to it. You play bold heroes who actually have statistics AND personality!!! This game is very well designed. And it's so easy to modify too if your a big fan of house rules. This game has been a favorite of mine for about 7 years. Don't pass this one up.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! You must get this game!.......2000-08-21

I have no idea what possessed me to dish out 30 bucks for this book, but let me tell you now, it's beyond worth it. This game is perfect for begginner Role Playing Gamers, with an easy to learn D6 (six sided dice) system. The book is clean, colorful, and easy to read. It teaches you how to play, create adventures, and lots more. Probably the best part of the book is the numerous examples of gameplay. Give the author a pat on the back for that, time after time in other RPGs Ive been annoyed by the lack of examples of play. No need to worry here, there is an example for almost every skill or rule in the game, so you don't have to second guess the book's quality. For experienced, and beginner role players, you MUST get this game, and have hours of fun playing it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gaming Resource.......2000-05-08

I've been with SWRPG ever since 2nd Edition came out, and I have to say that the R&E book is well worth the investment. It clears up a lot of grey areas that were present in the 2nd Edition book and has much greater resources from a beginning gamer's point of view. It also offers many fresh perspectives to those who have some experience with the game. All around, a worthwhile purchase.

5 out of 5 stars May the Force be with you.........2000-05-04

I picked up this book about a year ago and I have yet to be dissapointed. The format is really easy to get into with the narrative intros and highlighted basics so that you can start your adventure as soon as you want. For all Star Wars fans, (inluding the nitpickers, who need to relax) and roleplayers who want more than just guns and trolls. P.S. Hey Bradley, keep up with the times before you mock others. Wizards of the Coast OWNS TSR, which now has the Star Wars license. Read a little more often.

                Book Description

Clinical researchers, with or without a statistical background, will find this book an invaluable aid in understanding the statistical methods cited most frequently in clinical protocols, statistical analysis plans, clinical and statistical reports, and medical journals. Written in a manner which leads the nonstatistician through each test by example, substantive details are presented which will benefit even the experienced data analysts. Introductory chapters provide elementary statistical concepts as applied to clinical trials and an overview of statistical inference, including discussions of power, sample size calculations, p-values and the logic behind hypothesis testing. Numerous examples from clinical research are worked through both manually and using SAS. Methods presented include t-tests, analysis of variance, repeated measures ANOVA, linear regression, analysis of covariance, non-parametric tests, binomial tests, chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, McNemar's test, Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel test, logistic regression, log-rank test, and Cox proportional hazards model.

Supports releases 6.08 and higher of SAS software.

5 out of 5 stars Statistical Methods with SAS Examples.......2007-07-30

Great book to show the two main pieces of biostatistical studies; choosing the best statistical design for the clinical study, and how to run data points through SAS software to produce statistical output. Calculations by hand for the statistics are also presented, so the reader can see that the software yields the same answer. Best book I have seen showing explicitly how conduct a clinical research statistical study.

                3 out of 5 stars decent book.......2004-01-08

This book have a lot of examples with sas codes, outputs, and explanations of outputs, which is useful for practitioners. Recommended for practitioners, but not for serious statisticians who seek in-depth and accurate, a little more mathematical treatment of the topics instead of just explanations of sas codes/outputs.

                5 out of 5 stars One of a kind.......2003-03-16

This book is very instructive for those interested in the pharmaceutical field or might already be in, especially for those not having a statistics degree. The different tests are explained and tell you for what situations they can be applied to. Good examples with SAS code and sample data are provided. For most problems, manual calculations are shown before doing them in SAS. This book was not that easy to digest though. Multiple reading will make the material more clear.
