Book Description
This book argues that changing the way that teachers are paid and offering targeted financial incentives to teachers willing to take on more difficult assignments is a critical part of an overall strategy to attract and retain highly qualified teachers in the nation's most challenging schools.
Customer Reviews:
very clear, very informative, very quickly written... :).......2000-08-07
It's clear right from the start that Mad Genius was written in a hurry. The writing is uneven in places, there are stylistic rough edges, but this is no novel, and if Kaczynski would like a nicer biography he'll just have to write one himself. Still, the book is timely, and important, and sufficiently well written to make for easy reading.
The book helps answer many questions about the Unabomber:
- What are the facts of the case? [ not a trivial question for such a protracted case ]
- What is the Ted Kaczynski's background? Who is he, where did he come from, could anyone have guessed that this is what he was up to?
- Why he did it -- motives, frustrations, ideas.
And that's basically all that most people will ever want to know about the unabomber and his story. The book will also give you plenty of minutia to relish over, such as his the inventory of his cabin at the time of the arrest, what "technology" (or lack thereof) did he use to assemble his bombs, and it lists his manifesto in full. The book is not expensive and read quickly -- get it, read it, satisfy your morbid curiosity! :)
We need real information..........1999-07-26
Has anybody ever seen a complete list of the contents of Ted's cabin? I need to know the books he had. I've heard he had hundreds of books. What were they? Can anyone tell me what books Ted was reading? Have you noticed how the press squashed that aspect of this man's life?
fair basic info, written by committee, rushed to print.......1999-04-27
Have yet to find a really thoughtful, well organized book on the Unabomber. I read a fair number of true-crime books; generally I rate Robert Graysmith, who has written excellent books about the Zodiac killer and the Trailside Killer. Those books were well written, full of fascinating facts and research. But Graysmith's Unabomber book "A Desire to Kill" was obviously rushed into print, trying to beat the competition -- an effort to have a title before the public before the trial, while interest in the case was high.
Much the same can be said of Mad Genius. It was also published before the trial. It isn't quite as confusing as Graysmith's book, but then it doesn't strive to be more than a quick summary of what the investigation was like and who the victims were. To make up for lack of depth and/or detail, there is an extremely long list of the evidence seized at the Montana cabin -- with no explanation for what the coded notations the FBI used stand for. And then there's the complete manifesto, appended at the end. My favorite part was the photocopy of the Kazynski's hand-written note about seeds at the very end. At least it had a personal touch.
The definitive Unabomer book has yet to be written; it would take someone like Vincent Bugliosi or Ann Rule to do it justice -- or else the Robert Graysmith of old.
Book Description
Not too far away from the flea markets, dusty attics, cluttered used record stores, and Ebay is the world of the vinyl junkies. Brett Milano dives deep into the piles of old vinyl to uncover the subculture of record collecting. A vinyl junkie is not the person who has a few old 45s shoved in the cuboard from their high school days. Vinyl Junkies are the people who will travel over 3,000 miles to hear a rare B-side by a German band that has only recorded two songs since 1962. Vinyl junkies are the people who own every copy of every record produced by the favorite artist from every pressing and printing in existance. Vinyl junkies are the people who may just love that black plastic more than anything else in their lives. Brett Milano traveled the U.S. seeking out the most die-hard and fanatical collectors to capture all that it means to be a vinyl junkie. The book includes inter-views with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Peter Buck from R.E.M, and Robert Crumb, creator of Fritz the cat and many more under-ground comics.
Customer Reviews:
For people who are [...] about their music.......2007-04-27
If you read and/or watched High Fidelity and thought, "That's me!", then this book is for you. Keep a pad of paper with you as you read, because you'll learn about some interesting collectibles you never knew existed. The segments where rock stars talk about their personal history/obsession with record collecting are particularly fun. Milano has an easy-going style that makes it feel like you're having a private conversation about a topic close to both your hearts. The best place to buy this book would be a used record store, but do get it.
Don't Bother.......2006-08-03
Reads like a magazine article padded out to book length. Completely disposable. For record collectors like me, it says nothing new. For the rest it won't mean much. Don't bother, unless you see it in a bargain bin for $2 (which you probably will.)
what more?.......2005-09-30

If you consider yourself addicted to vinyl & those around you see your passion as something strange. This book is a treat, in it you will read stories about people who would need 2 or 3 life times to just hear the records they have accumulated or others that would fork out $4.000 for an odd 7 inch, not to mention one unbelievable story about a Hendrix collector who has in his prized record collection one that could contain Hendrix's dna.
Yes, vinyl record collector you are not alone.
vacuous.......2005-05-28
Vacuous, mediocre, trite, cliched, dull. Attempts and fails to be breezily hip and humorous. Skims the surface, never goes in-depth. A book for TV watchers, not readers.
Vinyl Junkies: Adventures in mediocrity.......2005-03-22
Brent Milano's book should have been entitled, "Adventures in OBSCURE vinyl records." It's not that I don't believe that collectible vinyl is rare and obscure, rather the vinyl choices that Mr. Milano chooses to highlight in his book come from artists that the mainstream collector has rarely heard of. Milano's book would have better served a wider range of collectors if he had incorporated more information on collectible vinyl from the classic rock,(50s, 60s & 70s)jazz and R&B eras. Instead, we get an in-depth interview with a collector whose passion is collecting vinyl from Olivia Newton-John. I understand that one man's garbage is another's prize, but I can't believe that most collectors benefit or desire to read about Olivia while so many other artists (Pink Floyd, The Who, Buddy Holly, etc.) are given little or no coverage. It seems as though Mr. Milano wrote the book for himself and his close circle of friends without any regard for the average vinyl collector who could care less about some of the vinyl titles (ie. Punk-Rock) that he mentions.
Mr. Milano does manage to catch the "fever" of the vinyl collector within his pages as he talks with collectors whose houses are about to collapse inward due to the sheer amount of records pushed inside. But more needed to be communicated as to how and what the AVERAGE collector seeks to add to his or her collection. Are there no records from the Rolling Stones, for example, that his interviewed collectors could have discussed? What of Pink Floyd? He introduces a character known as "Mono-man" for his love of mono pressings, but he fails to talk about many of the desirable mono records that collectors seek. What about mono pressings from the Doors? Hendrix? What about the mono White lp from the Beatles? None mentioned. He does mention the mono pressing of Sgt. Pepper, but then goes off to some other obscure title that most collectors I'm sure have never heard of. For example, I really don't need to read about someone who is collecting vinyl from a punk-rock group who used to drink ex-lax before a show so that they could pepper their audience with feces. What a band! Yeah, I really want their record! No wonder it's obscure.

Customer Reviews:
Definitely not par de course.......2007-09-27
I just finished reading this book, and I have to say, it doesn't read like an LKH book at all. I realize that this novel is supposed to be part of a larger picture, but I didn't get the picture at all.
This story is about a young woman who is just starting to learn about the magic that she wields, and how this affects the people around her. But the book also has a cover plot about two guys who want to body swap. Personally, the book could have been far better if the cover plot were actually integrated into the story, and not just show up at the very beginning and at the very end of the story. This novel should have been two completely separate, and better developed books.
If I had to describe this book, I would say, take the story structure of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein", coat the outside of it with Anne Rice's "Tale of the Body Snatcher", fill the inside with any generic "beginner witch" story you like, and throw "Night of the Living Dead" on top for good measure. That about sums it up.
If you had to read a novel by Laurell K Hamilton, I would highly recommend that you read her own series, Merry Gentry or Anita Blake.
what a waste of time.......2007-09-03
not even close to the standards set by the first of the Anita Blake series. A one-trick pony of a plot, lots of gore for no reason and shallow character development. It started in the middle of a story, never went anywhere, and didn't do much on the way. Dull, depressing and not entertaining.
Terrible.......2007-08-07
First of all, I love Ravenloft. I love the gothic horror feel of the "universe" that is Ravenloft. I've read Vampire of the Mists at least 5 times. (I highly recommend you buy that book.) I love "I, Strahd" - I am actually re-reading that book right now. (Go buy it as well, you won't be sorry.) I loved Knight of the Black Rose (again - go buy it.)
I have read every book in the Ravenloft series (except for Tower of Doom because I don't have it.) I liked Ravenloft so much that I even bought some of the RPG books just so I could read more about the Ravenloft universe even though I never planned on being a "Dungeon Master."
Now, having said all that ... Death of a Darklord, in my humble opinion is, BY FAR, the worst book in the series.
I found this book painfully boring to read, which is why it took me more than a month to finish a book which, based on the length, should only have taken an evening or two.
Each time I would think about picking up the book to read a few chapters, it felt more like a chore than an enjoyable reading experience. Most people would probably just quit reading a book that they didn't find themselves getting into. But I don't like doing that. If I start a book, I always finish it, no matter how long it takes.
The writing quality of this book was extremely poor in my opinion. You just never care about any of the characters. They could all have died off and no one would care. And the parts of the book that were supposed to be important didn't feel important due to the lack of descriptive detail.
It was one of those books where nothing between the first couple of chapters and the last chapter even mattered. Normally an author will spend all of the book building up character development and making the reader interested in the characters and the situations. But in this book, you simply don't care.
When the final chapters finally come around you are just left with a feeling of "what was the point"?
By far THEE worst book in the RavenLoft series.
Booo!.......2007-07-12
I was so disappointed in the conclusion of this book. After reading the Anita Blake series where this regular girl gets out of every unlikely and devastating situation it just seemed wrong. I expected the girl to come into her magic and do lots of things. It's almost pointless that she had magic in the first place cause she didn't do anything significant with it and yet the story revolves mostly around her. What a waste of a good idea.
Not What I Expected.......2007-04-16
I thought this book was one of the most depressing books I've ever read and I'm an avid reader. If this was the first Hamilton book I picked up I'd never read another. However I do know this is not the norm for her. I was left unsatistied and very sad about the fate of the characters that you had come to care about by the end (charachters were well written, just not the plot). Please don't waste your time with this one.

Customer Reviews:
Not really worth the time........2007-09-24
This one doesn't seem to be a typical Laurell K. Hamilton Book. I should point that out to those considering it. I finished in one day during a slow shift at work and I have to say I was thoroughly disappointed. Characters get introduced and then just when you sorta start caring for them they are brushed aside like bothersome ants. The end left me with a bad taste in my mouth that wouldn't go away. The only thing terrifying was that I actually made it to the end of this book. It was quite depressing left me quite unsatisfied. I wanted more but not in a good way. The ending left me feeling cheated especially after you learn what happens to the characters you tried so hard to start liking.
If you want good Laurell K. Hamilton stuff go back to her roots and read the Anita Blake Series before the 'porn' takes control. Basically anything from Obsidian Butterfly and before that. Maybe she'll go back to writing about characters we care about and not this 'fluff'. If not check out Moon Called (Mercy Thompson Series, Book 1) At least you are not left going 'uh... is that it?' when you're done with it.

Book Description
This book offers Oracle DBAs training appropriate for understanding and handling PeopleSoft technology. DBAs will learn a range of techniques, including: indexing, implementing DDL, managing tablespaces, and fixing low-performing SQL queries. Written by a field expert, this book answers common questions and misunderstandings that arise from use of PeopleSoft on an Oracle database. The result is a highly effective training manual for any Oracle DBA charged with the maintenance of a PeopleSoft system.
Customer Reviews:
Served as excellent overview for me.......2007-08-11
I bought this book just to get familiar with Peoplesoft environment (before the project to install Oracle RAC for Peoplesoft) and cover what I need to know as Oracle DBA. It beats all my expectations - I found lots of DBA relevant details as well as extremely useful overview of architecture and application design with Tuxedo.
After skimming through the book for few hours, I was able to fully understand and talk to Peoplesoft people at client side. In some cases, I knew even more details (or where to get more) than DBA on client site. Showed this book to the client DBA and he was so much thrilled with that - ran and bought it right away.
Well done David! Excellent Job. Thanks!
The only guide for Oracle DBA's on Peoplesoft.......2007-06-21
Weather you are a newbie Peoplesoft DBA or have been on the field for sometime....there is something for everyone in this book. This is an awesome book and it talks about A..Z about Peoplesoft DBA aspect. Buy it if you are managing/administrating Peoplesoft instances. Its worth every penny
Best PeopleSoft book for Oracle DBA who needs to learn PeopleSoft support.......2006-01-23
I have been an Oracle DBA for ten years and needed to ramp up very quickly recently for a large client to support their PeopleSoft environment without time to get training on PeopleSoft. This book fits the void left empty as the other PeopleSoft books are geared toward PeopleSoft application developers and not for an Oracle DBA who needs to understand the new ways of working with Oracle databases and PeopleSoft applications. Definitely a gold mine of nuggets for those who need to understand Peoplesoft on Oracle!!
Pragmatic, focused, detailed.......2005-01-10
This book is a deep in-depth view of the function of Peoplesoft on an Oracle database. Not only does it cover the fundamentals of how Peoplesoft uses the database features, it also details almost every table in the system on a row by row basis. An in-depth resource which is sure to be invaluable to anyone using this software configuration.
