Life and other hilarious moments.......2006-03-13
This book is a collection of anecdotes about the author, his family and friends. They are told in a thoughtful and insightful manner, with large doses of humor thrown into the works. The trials and triumphs, which exist in everyone's life, are treated with love, admiration and humor. These hilarious anecdotes will hit close to home and heart for the reader.
Good Feelings and Great Memories.......2005-10-17
Ok, I'm in the middle of this book and I'm averaging about 3 to 4 good laughs per page and sometimes more.. The way this guy writes makes you feel like he's sitting across the coffee table, kicked back and telling stories from his childhood, family and life.. He makes you feel like a friend.
The stories he tells take me back to MY childhood and make me remember things I didn't know I'd forgotten.. He captures the essence of childhood, because even though the we didn't have the same experiences, there's still a common thread.. I catch myself staring off and remembering... then snap back to the book to discover the next funny event or warm memory.
I think everyone will really enjoy this book. Especially if you were ever a kid. And if you weren't, then you need to read this book and see how it's done. *ha ha ha*
It's just as great as his other book about childhood, life's happenings and good funnies: "Six of One, Half Dozen of Another" .. Good times folks, good times.

Book Description
In the underground labyrinths of New York City's subway system, beneath the third rail of a long forgotten line, Saul Williams discovered scrolls of aged yellowish-brown paper rolled tightly into a can of spray paint. His quest to decipher this mystical ancient text resulted in a primal understanding of the power hip-hop has to teach us about ourselves and the universe around us.
Now, for the first time, Saul Williams shares with the world the wonder revealed to him by the Dead Emcee Scrolls.
I have paraded as a poet for years now. In the proc ess of parading I may have actually become one, but that's another story, another book. This book is a book that I have been waiting to finish since 1995. This is the book that finished me. The story I am about to tell may sound fantastic. It may anger some of you who have followed my work. You may feel that you have come to know me over the years, and in some cases you have, but in others...well, this is a confession.

This may not be what you expect.......2007-03-23
This is Saul Williams but it is not a book of poetry. It is well written and I would recomend it to anyone who likes Saul Williams, poetry, hip hop or both.
one of the best things i've ever read..........2006-12-16
i've written tons of academic papers (including my current thesis) on williams; his work is unbelievable and should be taught everywhere. his attempt to uplift hip-hop is honorable and appreciated.
Hip Hop and Poetry.......2006-04-28
I first heard about this book on a message board (I think it was the one from DaveyD.com) and I really enjoyed reading the publisher's excerpt, and it was just the introduction. With it, I didn't know how to take it. Whether it was truth or just a very well worded story from Saul Williams. Either way, I could feel the vibe of Hiphop Kulture coming from it. So of course, I went out and bought it.
I was blown away.
I first heard of Saul from the book ", said the Shotgun to the Head." So I already thought I knew what to expect. But I was completly blown away by the deepness of these poems. Whether really taken from a strange manuscript in an old spray can or just a way to publish his own poems about Hiphop's preservation of love, peace, and unity, this was great. I recommend it for anyone who like poetry, spoken word, rap music, or just books. Very good.
something old, something new.......2006-04-07
The Dead Emcee Scrolls start out with a great new poem called NGH WHT. After that, a good deal of the material is from older poems that he has in some cases edited, while in others, left mainly the same. NGH WHT is filled with subtle nuances that are not always easy to pick up on, so multiple reads are likely merited.
While a bit repetitive for die-hard fans, the work gives a very strong representation of where his work comes from, but also has some great new material. As to where he will go from here, that is anyone's guess.
Saul Williams - poetry in motion.......2006-03-21
Hip-hop has long been viewed by many as a watered-down genre. Those people have not yet discovered Saul Williams. I had heard of Saul because of the movie Slam a while back. I was really getting into underground hip-hop at the time so I decided to give Saul's music a listen. What I found was a breath of fresh air and a style that was powerful and poetic. This book is an insight into the world of Saul's lyrics and inspiration. I am an aspiring emcee, not aspiring to be famous but aspiring to become a better lyricist. This book has helped me greatly in seeing how a great emcee is inspired. I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone who has a great love for hip-hop music or just hip-hop culture in general. It is a deeply personal and thought provoking book. It pays for itself in the first few pages. Don't skip out on this one.
Book Description
Hip-Hop's literary and artistic merits are evident when compared to classic poetry and it's easy to link the great poets of the past to the contemporary Hip Hop poets of today: compare Robert Frost to Public Enemy, Shakespeare to Eminem, and Shelley to the Notorious B.I.G. This interactive workbook-style format is fun for teachers and students, as it illuminates the art of the written word with in-depth analysis of poetic literary devices, writing activities, and other innovative methods.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent classroom resource.......2007-05-12
This book was introduced to me in an English Department meeting held by our county. It was introduced with such enthusiasm, I just had to check it out for myself. The book is WONDERFUL. Lesson plans are included in the book including poetry writing activities and analysis of poetry sorted by literary devices (such as symbolism, imagery, metaphor, etc..)
My students LOVE the selections of poetry in the book -- the "hip hop" selections allow them to see that contemporary song lyrics are indeed poetry and the classic selections allow them to see how "classic" poetry is similar to popular music lyrics today by using the same techniques utilized by the classic poets. I would rate this book an A+ and definitely recommend it for high school English teachers.
The Perfect Teaching Tool..........2007-02-10
It is so hard to educate some children, mainly because of the outside influences of music, television, and video games. There needs to be a way to connect with them in the classroom similar to those things, and now there is. HIP-HOP POETRY AND THE CLASSICS by Alan Sitomer and Michael Cirelli is the perfect teaching tool for English teachers and educators, a resource for teaching poetry. In this well-thought-out book and teaching guide, Alan Sitomer and Michael Cirelli have produced a product which connects the classic curriculum, which may not hold a student's attention, to hip-hop poetry through standards-based language arts instruction.
HIP-HIP POETRY AND THE CLASSICS analyzes the core literary elements of poetry with examples of each term in a chapter-to-chapter format which includes the actual definition of the term, a classic poem utilizing the device, an interpretation guide for teachers, and a student worksheet. It is then followed with a hip-hop example, its interpretation, and a student worksheet and writing exercise. Not only does this set-up allow the student to understand elements such as imagery, metaphors, onomatopoeia, and symbolism, but it clearly shows the correlation between present day and the classics. The book also includes additional resources, learning objectives, and the language arts standards covered for each.
To actually reach and keep the attention of a student is the goal of many educators world-wide and with tools like HIP-HOP POETRY AND THE CLASSICS in place, they will be armed to do so. It allows them to connect to students on their level. The execution of this book is not only flawless, but an innovative and brilliant concept. I'm sure any student interested in hip hop will have no problems at all incorporating what they love about it into a better understanding and appreciation of literature and poetry. I highly recommend this book for students and teachers alike for use in contemporary, multicultural classrooms, in reading and writing programs, and even in home settings.

Book Description
What up?! Just like to welcome you to this class here at W.F.U. I am Dr. Horatio Honeycutt. As you all know, a class in multicultural studies is required of all entering freshmen, so I’m happy that you’ve chosen this course to fulfill that requirement. I know that you will find this class stimulating, exciting, and truly challenging. So, welcome again!
I’m passing out a syllabus for your perusal. This semester you will get aquainted with Black people in the urban ghetto of this city. We will be going on a field-trip into the heart of the ‘hood to get a firsthand look at how the language is spoken. But I must warn you, before we get to that point you must do a complete overhaul of your perception of Black people. We will have to become as “black” as we can be as not to standout and as they say in the hood, “get our asses bumrushed.” In other words, we don’t want to draw too much attention to ourselves and cause the indigenous population to pummel our bodies into mutilated pieces of DNA. But not to worry, I’ve already established communication with some of the more violent elements in the community. See?! You’ve already learned your first black word, “bumrush.” It means to suddenly bombard without warning; to attack. Put it in your vocabulary, you’ll need it. —Kahlil Amani, Jive 101/Ebonics 1619
Khalil Amani offers his take on Black America through both poetry and prose in Hip-Hop-Operations. Amani is a graduate of San Diego Mesa College and the author of Ghetto Religiosity 2000.

From the heart, but incorrect........2007-05-25
The author writes from his heart, he makes no attempt to please anyone who he dislikes, he wears his heart on his sleeve. He is not too keen on Jews and honestly, as a Jew, some of his writings do offend. He claims not to dislike Jews but then he throws around the words "Jew-Boy" to describe people. His writings on the Middle East are basic and contain elementary errors. I disagree with the author on many topics, but the book is not a dull read, just one that differs from my world view.

One Nation Under Therapy: How the Helping Culture is Eroding Self-Reliance
ASIN: 0801864038 |
Book Description
From self-esteem talk on Oprah to self-help books like Negaholics and Your Sacred Self, from magazine quizzes that test your "happiness quotient" to headlines blaring the supposed deepest emotions of public figures--we live in an age fixated on emotional well-being. Rich or poor, black or white, male or female, straight or gay, Americans share a belief in the therapeutic gospel. Feelings reveal inner truth; salvation lies in self-esteem. We measure success with a psychological yardstick.
As Eva Moskowitz argues, Americans today turn to psychological cures as confidently as they once petitioned the Lord with prayer. How did the land of the free become obsessed with self-fulfillment? Has America gained or lost by placing so much emphasis on personal well-being? Taking a historical approach, Moskowitz explores the country's tendency to find psychological explanations--and excuses--for nearly everything.
Beginning with the example of a "Mind Cure" developed by mid-nineteenth-century clockmaker Phineas P. Quimby, Moskowitz explains how Americans' growing fascination with therapy led them to adopt new kinds of reform--including, at the turn of the twentieth century, provisions for psychological services in prisons, courts, hospitals, and schools. Depression-era divorce rates prompted colleges and high schools to offer courses on marital happiness and produced a new marriage-counseling industry. During World War II, Moskowitz shows, the army devoted unprecedented energy to a soldier's "psychological readiness for combat." Moskowitz also explores more recent developments, including Cold War-era psychological assumptions of magazine campaigns that targeted unhappy housewives. She confronts the social protest movements in the 60s and the explosion of 70s self-help fads that continue to the present.
In a study that encompasses all aspects of American society--from television talk shows to the criminal justice system, from office politics to world politics--Moskowitz identifies a debilitating "sense of self" that is intimately bound up with the major developments of the twentieth century.
Customer Reviews:
Explains the "How" of the therapeutic takeover.......2007-05-06
After reading the excellent "One Nation Under Therapy", I picked up this book for a supplementary critique of the therapeutic gospel. However, I found that this book is more of a history of how the doctrine of psychological self-fulfillment came to have such a major influence in our society. Starting with the work of Phineas Quimby (the godfather of Christian Science) and moving through the Progressive movement and WWII to contemporary daytime talk shows, the author traces the evolution of psychotherapy's influence in American life. That's interesting, but this is not the book for you if you're interested in an actual critique of therapism's efficacy and legitimacy.
Where did Oprah come from.......2002-01-16
Eva Moskowitz appears to be forming an argument in this book, a critique of American faith in therapy with a historical perspective. Her concern is that the focus on personal fulfillment and happiness lures us into thinking that various problems can be solved through psychology, and the more immediate causes of these problems (eg. economics and politics) get placed in the background. Though this thesis hovers around most of the time, the book reads more like a history of therapy, divided by time period, and the problems that were focused on in those time periods (Illness, 1850-1900; Poverty, 1890-1930; Marriage, 1920-1940; etc...).
Moskowitz's critique doesn't extend to a serious scientific study of psychology and mental health. Rather, her emphasis is on the type of dubious, self-help talk of guru types of people who promise happiness and betterment but who have questionable motives. I think her ultimate goal is to get to the last chapter on talk shows and the plethora of specialized support groups, and how such a culture that embraces these things got to be. But however fascinated I am by Oprah's popularity, there is more to therapy than TV talk shows.
This book is an interesing account of history and the trends in therapeutic thinking in America, though I wonder if the phases of theraputic trends (represented by the chapters) were too cleanly divided. Just keep in mind that this book is more about pop-therapy than therapy.

Great Strategy Guide, As Per Usual From Prima!.......2007-05-16
This Strategy Guide is great. It has extremely well detailed and defined color maps for every level, and depicts where each Field Task is on larger, Region maps. Just as an attempt to clarify something that, when I purchased this product, wasn't clarified by Amazon: this guide is not really for the Xbox360 version of the game (I know many of you may already have known that, but for those who didn't, just trying to help). Now, the basic gameplay and levels are the same, but there are indeed a few minor differences that could occur when trying to use this guide with the XB360 version of the game. Also, there are many more medals for the PS2/Xbox versions, and the guide only tells those, and doesn't separate XB360 medals from them, leading me to believe that it is not specifically designed for XB360. Just wanted to help out those who may make the same mistake I did.
