As an attorney who specializes in employment law, I have found that this is the best book out there on wage and hour law. It is short, concise and to the point. It is valuable for both employees and employers in the private and public sector. This book is not for union employees, whose rights are governed by their union contracts.

Although this book is quite comprehensive, it was hard to find information about union worker rights.

An indispensable book for tracing the great teaching lineages from the past to the present.

If you want to know about the great pianists in history, this book will provide with a knowledgable and entertaining summary of the subject. Mr. Schonberg usually confronts several sources so one gets a very objective picture of many important and some not so important pianists.
One can see that Mr. Schonberg is not a pianist when he critics some people's views on such topics as technique, and one does not have to agree with his opinions about some pianists, but nevertheless this is a great book worth having as a reference.

Mr. Schonberg knows how to put the reader at ease when writing about most any pianist. You feel comfortable with those great titans of pianism of years past, as if they were your own teachers. He paints vivid, honest pictures of each pianist, going into detail about how they played, their own peculiar strengths and weaknesses, about how they contributed to the overall history of piano-playing. Almost ALL the major and minor pianists of the past are described or at least mentioned. Also included are wonderful anecdotes giving insight into the personalities of the pianists involved. I had to laugh aloud when I read Chopin's disagreement over how rubato's should be played when arguing with fellow pianist Meyerbeer. The latter insisted that Chopin's playing of mazurkas sounds like 2/4 time, when Chopin was vehemently insisting that it was being played in 3/4 time (vehemence = screaming).

The only problems with the book is that Schonberg tends to stick to terms that become a little too commonplace throughout the book. He constantly refers to the "first modern pianist," "romantic," "ahead of his time," etc. He uses those terms so frequently that I forget which pianists were classicists, which were romantics, and which modernists. Also, the book is a little dated, the last publication being 1986.

However, if you're even MILDLY interested in the great pianists of the past please buy this interesting, thoroughly fact-packed book.

Exhaustive research , gratifying results !.......2004-12-22

This an extraordinary and best documented compilation of five generations of pianists. From Hans von Bullow to Ivo Pogorelich . Since the book is from 1990 Schoenberg makes an exhaustive , passionate and reflexive analysis of the greatest virtuous of the keyboard . Schonberg differs from the ornaments of the technical language and goes to the heart of the music .
Even if there are points of disagreement respect to several considerations , this work is recommended for its informative richness.
The only little default - to my mind - might be well in the little data about some renowned European and even American pianists who had less prominence in America but equally deserve a special place in this singular book.
Some examples are : Yves Nat , Samson Francois , Ivan Moravec , John Lill , Leonard Hokanson , Clifford Curzon , Myra Hess , Vlado Perlemuter , Paul Badura Skoda , Annie Fisher, Selma Kramer, Walter Gieseking, Joaquin Azzucaro , Andrei Gavrilov , Maria Yudina , Tatiana Nikolayeva , Bianca Musulin, Edith Farnadi , Horacio Gutiérrez, Ely Ney , Jean Marie Darre, Gabriel Tachino , Solomon , Dino Ciani , Jorg Demus, Friedrich Gulda, Michael Ponti , Mikjail Rudy and Vladimir Sofronitzky among the most representatives .

Although Islam and Integration are frequently seen as antithetical concepts in much of Europe, in the USA the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent are an example of a population who have succeeded in integrating themselves. This is due to their high levels of education and economic success, which make them one of the most prosperous minorities in America.

This study examines the regrouping of the religious community and the reinvention of group identity, in first- and second-generation immigrants. By transplanting many of their institutions to the US (particularly in New York), Muslim immigrants succeeded in establishing their presence in the American landscape without arousing significant concern in the host community.

The study emphasizes that in spite of the stereotypes attached to Islam - which are as loaded in America as in Europe and periodically incite reactions from the Muslims - the religion of Islam can actually play a stabilizing role, just as other minority religions have done, (notably Catholicism and Judaism and more recently Hinduism.) and that Islam does not seem to compromise the ability of immigrants to participate in American society.

Maddening in places.......2007-09-05

I am an intermediate user of Dreamweaver MX 2004 as well as Fireworks and am learning Flash (for which I highly recommend the Hands On Training series) and decided I needed to learn FreeHand MX 2004, the 4th leg of the Studio MX 2004 chair. I bought this book because it was the best rated by Amazon users and I've used Training from the Source before. I was disappointed. In places the book seemed maddening (or maybe it's FreeHand MX 2004 that's maddening) and I had to go over and over some of the bits to figure out what wasn't being said in the text so I could complete the examples. In part, it maybe that the book is based on the Macintosh version (the illustration show Mac windows) and I'm working with the PC software.

Good FH book to get you started.......2006-07-02

I am new with FreeHand. I bought MX2004 Flash Pro and I wanted to start using all of MX2004 apps including FreeHand. This book taught me how to get me started with FH. It comes with the practice files to work my way through the lessens and I had no problem following the book. I also purchased Fireworks version of this book from the same publisher.

Freehand MX training from the source.......2005-09-11

A well written introductory level course book that will also be a good reference because of the explanations at each step. It tells why you ake an action and also gives alternative ways to accomplish the same task. 4 stars instead of five because a couple of key steps were omitted in two of the exercises. I had to backtrack repeatedly until I figured out the missing steps. Recommended.

Very Good.......2004-10-27

The author clearly states in the introduction the book is intended for new Freehand users. One of the previous reviews, stating it is unfit for power users, is probably correct; but that is not the intent of the book. Based on that, this book accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do: acquaint new users to Freehand. I thought it did a very good job. Additionally, the Freehand manual actually is shipped with the CD. It is located on the installation CD in .pdf format.

Patti Schulzes' book is the perfect book for my needs........2004-05-15

As a professional who earns my income using Photoshop I was looking for help learning Macromedia Freehand MX. I understood that Freehand, similar to Photoshop is NOT intuitive.
Patti Schulze wrote and organized a "how to book" that enables the reader to reach their goal--learning Freehand MX.
The book is written in an understandable style that anticapated my questions. For example; while moving a rectangle to center it on the guides on the page, I was to drag and center the rectangle by placing the X that would appear in the center of the rectangle over the proper position on the guides. My problem was there was no X in the rectangle. The very next paragraph anticipated my question and gave the answer.
The success of your goal--learning Freehand MX takes effort on the readers part but the author has successfully done his job.
