Proud to Be an Okie brings to life the influential country music scene that flourished in and around Los Angeles from the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s to the early 1970s. The first work to fully illuminate the political and cultural aspects of this intriguing story, the book takes us from Woody Guthrie's radical hillbilly show on Depression-era radio to Merle Haggard's "Okie from Muskogee" in the late 1960s. It explores how these migrant musicians and their audiences came to gain a sense of identity through music and mass media, to embrace the New Deal, and to celebrate African American and Mexican American musical influences before turning toward a more conservative outlook. What emerges is a clear picture of how important Southern California was to country music and how country music helped shape the politics and culture of Southern California and of the nation.

The Last Frontiersmen.......2003-01-26
Overall a good study of the last great westward folk migration in American history. I would add that many of their predecessors in the "classic" frontier period were just as broke and hungry as these migrants, but there was little mass media around to record them. An interesting, well-done slice of folk Americana.
A great companion to Grapes of Wrath.......2000-11-23
James Gregory has put together a outstanding history of the migration and culture of the dust bowl migrants who settled in California. I have probably read Grapes of Wrath four or five times since first reading it in high school, but after reading Gregory's description of the way these poor south-westerners struggled with poverty and at the same time maintained family unity and cultural pride, Steinbeck's book takes on a whole new meaning. Gregory goes step by step to show what motivated many to move, and then what motivated them to stay even though they suffered great privations and predjudice. I especially enjoyed learning about the influences of country music not just upon the migrants, but on the entire nation. A must read to make Grapes more clear!
American Exodus: Okies in California How They Really Were.......2000-03-22
I thought that this was a good book. I read it for a history course on the Great Depression and it was definately worth reading. It can get a little bogged down in detail or a little dull ocassionally, but overall it is a good view of "okie culture". It really helped be to understand the diversity and impact of the migration. And it contains a few interesting personal stories as well!
Excellent overview.......2000-02-18
This book provides an excellent overview of the history of the dust bowl Okies and the culture they (we) have created in central California. Gregory explores the religion, music, and politics well in clear language. The book is short enough to be enjoyable and while goes into some depth on a few issues, it is not so filled with unimportant details as to be muddled. Gregory sprinkles the text with brief excerpts of the many interviews he conducted with the Okies.

A "classic" example of multiple methods of data collection.......2002-12-11
"Marienthal: The Sociography of an Unemployed Community" is considered a classic in the fields of political science and sociology. The authors use multiple methods of data collection to examine an unemployed town in Austria in the 1930s. The effects of unemployment are examined and recounted. This book reads quickly and easily.

A collection of Ludlow Porch's best southern humor........1998-07-16
If you love to grin, you will love this book. It is a collection of Ludlow Porch's best short stories from his previous books. Consider it concentrated humor. Ludlow is a southern gentleman with a love for humor and in his books they come together - respecful southern humor that everyone can enjoy. The best part is that his stories are about real life observations in the South. There is really nothing more humorous or funny than real life and in Ludlow's books he certainly proves this. This book is a great investment, it gives more back in enjoyment than one pays for it.

This book has been a great help to my small daughter in her violin practice. By splitting the tasks of note reading and rhythm reading into separate sections on pitch and rhythm she doesn't get as frustrated. The author knows that it's best to concentrate on ONE thing at a time as you're learning!
Great for beginning note readers!.......2007-03-20
My 7yr old daughter loves this book! She is learning to play the violin by the Suzuki method and the teacher reccomended the "I can read music" so she could continue progressing in her studies. The book is simple and laid out well; she loves to get it out duing her daily practice and 'do it on my own.' As a former music major in college, I appreciate the opportunity for her to focus on her intonation with it's simplicity, yet not so much so that she loses interest in daily practice. I enjoy seeing the eagerness and maturity that this book has helped foster with her musical experience.
Great practice book!.......2007-03-09
This book is exactly what the title says....a note reading book. It's a great practice book for the beginning reader on the violin. Each lesson adds a new note and works both on reading the notes as well as reading rhythms. This is not a how to play violin book so anyone starting out will have to get a separate lesson book. But it is a great note reading book to practice the skill of sight reading music.
Not for beginners.......2006-12-28
I was lead to believe that this book would be helpful, for the beginner, to learn to read music. It is not. It is for students who already have a basic understanding of reading music and is simply a "note reading" book. Which I have yet to discover the usefullness of. A better book for the beginner", someone who has no knowledge of how to read music and needs to learn the basic principles involved in reading music, is "Learn to read music" by Howard Shanet.

This book is wonderful for chess fanatics who want to improve their tactical endgame and middle game. Hunderds of situations on the chess board are given in the book which actually occured during tournament game. The readers are asked to find the blunders that the players overlooked in the given situation and find out a corresponding brilliant sequence which will lead to a win for the adversary. This books allows the readers to improve their analytical capability at the same time providing them with important text book manuevers in which they can exploit a given situation on the board......if u are a tactical chess player and haven't read this book then you should ..

Dated Material.......2007-07-28
With release 4.5 out and this book originally written for the 3.0 product and then revised with a chapter on 4.0, it is now highly dated. The coverage of the material was good, but this book is nearly worthless if you want to study for the current exam. The practice tests are for version 3.0, and every vendor likes to focus on the new features of the new version. This book does not contain what you'll need to pass the current test.
I recommend downloading the (free) Product Documentation from Citrix' website and spending the money to buy some of the practice tests and study guides from other vendors.
When it was new it was probably worth a 4 star rating, but due to the fact that relying on this book guarrantees you won't pass the test I can only rate it as a must to avoid.
Good Reference.......2006-02-24
I just passed the CCA 4.0 test using This book as my study guide. Other than a couple of glaring errors it was well written:
Page 42 incorrectly states that the farm will continue to function for "up to 48 hours" following a datastore failure. It's actually 96 hours.
Pg 248 incorrectly states that there are only 14 anonymous user accounts - There are actually 15
If I were a betting man, I'd bet that all three of those things would make good test questions.
