Ace the Corporate Personality Test
ASIN: 0471523763 |
Book Description
More and more employees are having to sit psychometric tests as part of the interviewing process. On paper, a person's skills and experience may perfectly fit the job description, but the employer also wants to know things about the individual's personality: for example, their weak and strong points; whether they will fit in with the department; whether they can retain information quickly; and whether they have management potential or whether they will always require supervision.
This book is designed to help the individual master taking psychometric tests, and help them decide, before applying for a job, what their individual personality type is - extrovert, emotional, creative or assertive. Working through the tests will give the reader the ability to improve their skills in the key areas of lateral thinking, problem solving, and intelligence, and the book also provides a guide to assessing performance.
- Familiarity with the type of questions set in psychometric tests will give readers an idea of what to expect, and will help them relax in a test situation
- Authors are experts in psychometric and IQ testing and have written over 94 books on all types of tests
- More and more employers are using psychometric testing at interview - including government, education, industry, armed forces and commerce. There is a real need for this type of book to guide the potential employee through the structure of psychometric tests
Ken Russell and Philip Carter first met in 1984 through their membership of Enigmasig, a special interest group within British Mensa devoted to the setting and solving of puzzles. They published their first book as joint authors in 1987 and with the publication of this series will have over 100 titles to their credit ranging from quizzes, IQ testing and puzzles.

Free practice test??.......2007-01-25
This SAT study guide offers some helpful tips and many practice problems. It's smaller than other SAT study guides which makes it less intimidating than those other bulky, thick study guides. However, where is the free online pracitce exam it is suppose to include?? I tried the website, but it wasn't there!
If you're serious about studying for the SATs, I suggest you try something else (yes, those other bulky study books!). I feel cheated for not having the online practice SAT exam which was also suppose to include instant essay scoring for free. Good luck on the SATs everyone!

Book Description
This book analyzes the social impact of the Asian financial crisis and its policy implications. It documents the severe rise in unemployment and its repercussions in the worst-affected countries (the Republic of Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia) and how this has, to a varying extent, overwhelmed the underdeveloped systems of social protection. It argues that, in light of this experience, urgent action is required both to relieve current social distress and to strengthen systems of social protection.
A central policy message is that current programs of policy and institutional reform have to include a basic rethinking of the social dimension of the future model of development. A new social contract, based on full respect for basic labor rights, democracy, and greater social protection needs to be forged. The book argues the case for the introduction of unemployment insurance, the expansion of social assistance, and the strengthening of active labor market policies. The policy issues raised are of relevance not only to the crisis-affected Asian countries but also to other emerging economies that are facing similar challenges in an era of rapid economic and financial globalization.

This parody will keep you laughing cover to cover. It contains not only life's little destructions, but life's little white lies and excuses, life's little self destructions. I brought this book to a party and everyone wanted to see it. It was a hit! After reading this book, you might get a few ideas of your own
Book Description
Taking us back to late ’70s and early ’80s Hollywood—pre-crack, pre-AIDS, pre-Reagan—
We Got the Neutron Bomb re-creates word for word the rage, intensity, and anarchic glory of the Los Angeles punk scene, straight from the mouths of the scenesters, zinesters, groupies, filmmakers, and musicians who were there.
“California was wide-open sex—no condoms, no birth control, no morality, no guilt.” —Kim Fowley
“The Runaways were rebels, all of us were. And a lot of people looked up to us. It helped a lot of kids who had very mediocre, uneventful, unhappy lives. It gave them something to hold on to.” —Cherie Currie
“The objective was to create something for our own personal satisfaction, because everything in our youthful and limited opinion sucked, and we knew better.” —John Doe
“The Masque was like Heaven and Hell all rolled into one. It was a bomb shelter, a basement. It was so amazing, such a dive ... but it was our dive.” —Hellin Killer
“At least fifty punks were living at the Canterbury. You’d walk into the courtyard and there’d be a dozen different punk songs all playing at the same time. It was an incredible environment.” —Belinda Carlisle
Assembled from exhaustive interviews,
We Got the Neutron Bomb tells the authentically gritty stories of bands like the Runaways, the Germs, X, the Screamers, Black Flag, and the Circle Jerks—their rise, their fall, and their undeniable influence on the rock ’n’ roll of today.

Please Kill me SoCal style.......2007-05-30
This is more or less a compendium of oral accounts from the LA punk days with such punk stars like Darby Crash, the Runaways, and so forth. While there were definitely some cool parts about the book-- all the he-said-she-said gossip and dramas-- I found that more often than not the central dogma was to show how the LA punk scene was "better" than the NY punk scene and then, moving into the "hardcore" era, to dismiss and downtalk all the kids in the hardcore scene immediately following all the debauchery of early punk.
It seems like the same few people were interviewed for all the bands and that only certain bands recieved coverage. The chapter titles also didn't match what the "interviews" were about in some cases which made the structure hard to follow and almost frustrating at points. There was hardly anything about Rockabilly despite the fact the book has some of the early Rockabilly bands listed in its Index and Chapters, which is HUGE in Southern California, and the only mention of other punk scenes (aside from downtalking the "snobby" NY punkers) was of Sid Vicious and how they all snuck him heroin at the Sex Pistol's final show in San Francisco.
Basically, if you're obsessed with punk history and you like the structure of written oral history (like Please Kill Me) then you can't go wrong even though this could have definitely been much better and more interesting. However, if you're searching for a comprehensive and well put together piece on Southern California punk, I suggest you keep looking since you will probably be disappointed.
Overall: it was ok. I'd still read it and I might even read it again. But there are many other books that I enjoyed far more with less pretension.
It's no "Please Kill Me".......2006-08-16
Picked this and the new _American Hardcore: A Tribal History_ up at the same time. Despite listening to the West Coast punk bands growing up, I knew far less about them and that scene than I did about their contemporaries in New York, England and even DC (well-covered in "Our Band Could Be Your Life").
The first half is tedious, spending too much time on the fading glam scene and teenage groupies - unlike the Doors/VU/Iggy chapters of _Please Kill Me_ they don't really tell you how this scene fed into punk rock.
The latter half takes off fairly well, when X and the Germs (and Black Flag and Social Distortion, etc.) start to make records and we actually get to read about them instead of which Chinese restaurant/bar was booking shows for a little while.
A key difference with this one vs. _Please Kill Me_ is that they had (it seems) less access to personalities that readers will recognize. Fewer famous acts from LA than NY, and some wouldn't speak to the authors, so they had to rely on people.
Skip this and find a bootleg of _The Decline of Western Civilization_ for a more intimate account of what LA punk rock looked and sounded like.
Art and Homosexuals is not what I remember about Punk.......2006-07-15
I had high hopes for this book. The History of Punk in LA! Man that sounded great. What I found was half the book was dedicated to the Glitz scene of the 70's. This book talked as much about disco and glitz as it did punk. I remember punk being hardcore, in your face agression coming from bands like TSOL, Black Flag, Fear, etc. These bands were covered as an afterthought. Instead I read all about how punk evolved from homosexuals and gay art. Gay art? Lots of coverage about Darby Crash but most focused on him being a closet homosexual. I was hoping for more info on the hardcore movement and reading about concerts at the Olympic Auditorium. Like I said, I was disappointed to say the least.
Starts slow, improves, but could be better overall.......2005-05-02
I had a really hard time getting into this book at the beginning. While I understand that talking about the glam and glitter scene of the early 70s is important in setting the stage for a punk history, I found the first few chapters of this book rather tedious, whereas the chapters on glitter and glam in "Please Kill Me" were much more interesting and insightful as to educating in the origins of punk.
Once it got going it was a little better, but everything seemed a little glossed over. I always felt that I was missing some key element to the story. Just comparing the size of the book with Please Kill Me shows how much of a difference there is between the two. McNeil really brought you into the depths of late 70s New York, where Mullen and Spitz let you look at it from the outside. The focus is limited to a few bands, the only one that got any major focus being the Germs. To be fair, X, Black Flag, The Screamers, The Go-Gos, and The Runaways all get some coverage.
If you don't know much about L.A. Punk, this is a good palce to start. But it really only whets your appetite.
Interesting...........2004-09-06
I had mixed feelings about this book. On one hand it was interesting and I learned something about the LA Punk scene in the 1970's on the other hand I wanted more. It seemed to just skim the surface and some of the subjects in the book really were/are interesting enough to devote an entire book to. I wish it was more in depth.

Book Description
From The Wild Ones to Easy Rider, the motorcycle has inflamed the imaginations of the media and the general public alike. Marlon Brando, sporting leather jacket, jeans, and moody glare, became a cultural icon summing up 'the road' in all its maverick glory. But does the myth of the renegade cyclist, an outcast from mainstream society who takes to the road in pursuit of freedom, correlate with reality in any meaningful way? Who really rides motorcycles and why? What are the chief concerns of motorcyclists and how are these represented and contested in the political sphere?
This book, based on extensive fieldwork amongst bikers and the bikers' rights movement, overturns the ingrained prejudice that equates bikers with deviancy and explodes the myths emphasizing the rebellious and dysfuntional aspects of biking. Instead, the author focuses on what biking means to those involved - the rewards, the risks, the addictiveness, but also the stigma and attacks on the biking lifestyle. In response to the negative imagery surrounding bikers and growing legislative threats from Europe, bikers' rights associations evolved between the 1960s and 1980s in the UK and Europe. The author discusses the aims and achievements of these lobbies, and the future of motorcycling more generally as it becomes fashionable as a middle-aged, middle-class pursuit.

Digital Storytelling.......2005-10-02
Whether your new to writing or producing interactive programs or a seasoned pro, into fiction or non-fiction, this book is the best there is in explaining this new craft.
It's not the Future anymore, it's the Now.......2005-09-06
DIGITAL STORYTELLING
Carolyn Handler Miller
From sitting in front of the camp fire to sitting in front of a computer, story-telling has always been rewarding, yet often frustrating. The challenges of telling a story using different media, particularly a new one, can be intimidating, especially to someone who wasn't born with a mouse in their mouth.
Not to worry, though, for in the first chapter of Carolyn Miller's book, she lays those concerns to rest by noting that interactive stories are similar to myths, rituals, and games. I immediately felt better and dove right into this comprehensive book.
DIGITAL STORYTELLING is valuable on a number of levels.
It's a scholarly revue and investigation of interactive media and thus an excellent resource for researchers.
It explains the terminology and theories.
It offers specific tools for digital storytelling development of plot, structure, and characters.
It has guidelines for specific uses of digital storytelling such as information, education, and advertising.
Children's projects have their own helpful chapter.
As a story consultant moving more into games design work, and as a writer desiring to keep up with the latest techniques and technologies, I know I'll be reaching for DIGITAL STORYTELLING a lot. And I know I'll always find it a rich resource of information and inspiration.
Good for a history class.......2005-08-21
Not a very playful book. In fact... it seems to follow the old playbook of how things are done. The same playbook that men/boys have written when it comes to gaming. Shoot first and ... questions? what questions? story? What's that? I already knew the material that was in this book. Didn't offer anything new for me. With this book... just a play an online game or grab a game off your shelf, read about the history of "interactive" media and computers and .. voila... you've read the book. For what I needed... this book just did not cover it. Time to lay some new ground in the gaming arena.
Informative Book by Pioneer in Field.......2005-08-17
An extremeley informative, clear, focused book by a pioneer in the field who covers all the bases. It's a useful tool for writers interested in new forms of storytelling. With Miller's lively writing style and illustrations, it's a great read as well!
Dr. Linda Seger, Script Consultant

and seven other books
Indespensible.......2005-08-12
This book brings clarity to a complex and often confusing subject. After co-writing several CD-ROM games, I thought I knew what I needed to know about interactive entertainment. This book made me realize how much more there is to this world and the vast potential that's there for creating new forms of entertainment and education. Instead of making you feel overwhelmed by the possibilities, Ms. Miller lays it all out for you in ways that are not only informative but actually inspirational. The chapters are well organized and the real-world examples are plentiful. On the one hand, it's an indespensible reference for anyone who writes (or wants to write) interactive material. On the other, it works as a muse, helping you to see things in a new light and often sparking ideas. It's a must for those who want to work in this field.
