Customer Reviews:
The Cover Misleads You.......2001-08-24
I bought this book thinking that it would give great examples and explanations of various sensors and sensor interfacing. The book does cover the idea behind many sensors, however, I think think the author tries to get overcomplicated by backing up sensor operation with calculus and other "Overkill" equations.
I am getting into motion detection design and bought this book to aid me in my research, however, the author fails to mention the one sensor that is the defacto standard of motion sensing, the PIR! Also, if you are looking for real world applications and example circuits, this book will disappoint. The only chapter which I thought was benificial was the chapter on op amps, although it to was heavy on theory and equations and hardly mentioned any pratical applications. Most of the info in the book concerning sensors is simply a repeat of equations and theory already readily available on the web. I was really hoping for some new, fresh ideas with this book and it failed to deliver.
Good book for hobbyist, but full of typos.......1999-10-12
Joe Carr has a very clear writing style and illustrates all concepts with simple circuits. His general approach is that of an electronics technologist educating a hobbyist or technician. He does a great job at this, but unfortunately devotes no effort to proof-reading. His books are flawed by numerous mismatches between text and schematics, improper symbols, etc. This will be very frustrating for the novice and obscures the points involved.
The book is not good to learn.......1999-05-20
Looking at its contents the book seems to be very adequate for introducing undergraduate students (in science or engineering) to topics such as sensors and electronic instrumentation. Unfortunately some topics, i.e. analog (?) amplifiers, are presented in an oversimplified and confusing way which leads students to get wrong concepts on them. Others, like signal classification (chapter 2) are quite arbitrary and lacking foundation. At worst the book has some severe errors, for example in chapter 1 page 9 , or the description of RTD senesors. I think the book needs a detailed revision in order to find other gross errors. With respect to topic presentation I think it is always possible to explain the right ideas without using neither complicated math nor basic semiconductor theory. Finally, for the professional the book does not add anything valuable. You get neither new concepts nor information.
Not enough information on the stated topic.......1999-05-16
Unfortunately, out of 325 pages, only 70 pages are devoted to the subject of sensors. Perhaps the title should be re-considered.
Very useful book. Includes a section on real world opamp use.......1998-02-18
I found 'Electronic Circuit Guidebook Vol 1: Sensors' to be quite useful. The book includes a section on real world op amp use wich I found immediatly useful as it explained a problem I had been having at work with an integrating amplifier. There are good background sections on most kinds of sensors although capacitive sensors seem to have been omitted for some reason.
Book Description
Frustrated by the often unrealistic standards of beauty presented by today’s media, many women have become trapped in a never-ending pattern of chronic dieting. Daily they endure destructive self-talk such as “I can’t eat that or I’ll get fat” or “If I could just lose a few more pounds everything would be better.”
Chronic dieters may be any shape or size but they have one thing in common: They are often left to suffer alone with an undiagnosed “sub-clinical” eating disorder. Such sub-clinical disorders include eating habits that are unusual, even unhealthy, but do not fit the technical classifications of anorexia or bulimia.
Addressing the many dimension of “chronic dieting,” Life Inside the “Thin” Cage offers a wake-up call and practical steps to those who need healing. Readers will find personal stories, insights into their secret patterns and habits, reassurance that they are not alone, checklists, self-tests, and, best of all, a new road to emotional, physical, mental and spiritual freedom.
Customer Reviews:
DID I WRITE THIS??.......2006-08-24
I happened upon this book by 'chance' (in other words, the hand of God, in my opinion) and when I read the back, a tear trickled down my face.
Having been overweight much of my life and now being a chronic dieter, I could resonate with Constance's words - I think those thoughts she expressed. I don't fit the DSM-IV diagnoses for bulimia or anorexia. I'm 'different'. She is so right - there is a constant battle going on in my mind regarding weight, eating, and exercising. I am addicted to food AND exercising. It governs my every waking thought and even governs my day and how I spend my time. It's insane, I know. Finding balance is something I am working on. The sad thing? Losing weight DEFINITELY changed my life (I lost 70 lbs) and people DO treat you differently (I've never been treated better than I have in the the years since I lost weight). So, it's hard not to be addicted to dieting when the results are so positive. But are they healthy? That is something I am working out. Thank you, Constance, for speaking what I feel!!!!
A real look at real life.......2003-05-03
Constance digs deep in her work...which affects nearly everyone at some point in their life (if we were to be honest). From the anorexic to the severely [overweight]...wishing our bodies were something else is the norm and our world can often revolve around it. This book is a great book of encouragement and sound advice from a clinical standpoint. I'd highly recommend it to anyone!
The Key to the Cage.......2003-04-28
We can draw on the stories of others to find our way out. Constance manages to talk openly about her struggle with a sub clinical ED which allows the reader to find shelter and acceptance. Fellow sub ED journeymen will realize they are not alone and there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I believe her willingness to be vulnerable and create a public medium for sub clinical ED materialwill spur an increase in hope and help. The frustrating reality of our weight, our identity our ability to feel at "peace" with living is exhausting. When you read the pages of the "Thin" Cage a framework is given to your experience--you will recognize your behavior, your feelings, your habits, your rituals. And then you will realize you too want Balance. Constances' material will help you find the path to balance. Good reading!
WOW...Guys Read this Too!.......2003-04-21
What a marvelous resource - while I am a male reader I needed to understand women my sons will date, women in our family trapped in this cage like my niece, my sister, my cousin. Powerful and honest. Thank YOU Constance for this excellent title.
Words offer hope and healing.......2003-04-21
Although estimates vary across studies, eating disorders are disturbingly common. Even more common than Anorexia and Bulimia, however, are a spectrum of problems which fail to reach certain diagnostic thresholds called Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). These disorders are rarely diagnosed and, consequently, are very infrequently treated. To the millions of people who suffer from so-called sub-clinical eating disorders, however, their impact is very significant.
In her work, Life Inside the "Thin" Cage, Constance Rhodes writes with transparency and disarming honesty about her own long struggle with EDNOS and bolsters her message with contemporary examples and insights derived from recent research. As a clinical psychologist, I find her tale to be familiar (and ultimately heartening) - the story of a driven, achievement-oriented, young woman on a quest for perfection who equates her value with the way she looks. Through a variety of events, she comes to the realization that she has a problem and ultimately succeeds in altering her orientation toward life (and toward food). In the process, she becomes increasingly balanced, healthy, and whole. She gently suggests that the transformation she has experienced is available to others and offers what I believe is a very helpful framework for a journey toward health. Importantly, she does not make unrealistic promises and (in contrast to many self-help books) does not offer a "quick-fix" but rather conveys the message that change is often a slow process, and a painful one at that.
I am an enthusiastic fan of Life Inside the "Thin" Cage and believe it raises awareness of a very significant problem while also offering words of hope and healing. It is a very important resource that deserves to be read widely and that can serve as a reliable guide for individuals interested in engaging in meaningful change and in finding freedom from unhealthy relationships both with food and with their own bodies.

Customer Reviews:
anyone can write a book..........2006-07-07
...but David's insights into the corporate world are great! He knows what its like to work in a place that Dilbert knows so well. I think this is a fun book to read at Starbucks on Friday morning when you don't want to go to work. I can't wait for the next book from Mr. Cordell. He's a bright point for a dull day.
Cover to cover laughs.......2005-04-05
A great book to pass around the office on break time ... just put it behind your back fast if the boss walks by! The best parts are the god-aweful funny "illustrations" of the author in various compromising situations. Imagine the "Copy Crusader" standing bravely in his cape ontop the office copy machine, defending it from all would-be copiers. Now THAT would be a classic way to end an era of 9-5 misery ... hey, if you're lucky they might even have to call the fire department to talk you down from the paper tray.
Whether you are seriously looking to burn a bridge or just want a good laugh, this book is worth getting (and sharing).
Big time laughter-make no mistake about it..........2005-03-18
...David Cordell is a genius! I've never read anything that made me want to simultaneously piss and crap myself at once! This book takes life in an office cube farm to a whole new level. Great for keeping in a desk drawer for easy reference when your boss asks to see your TPS reports.
Very Hilarious! I just laughed and laughed!.......2005-03-01
This book is very hilarious and crucial for those who want to live on the edge! The author definitely has an obscure way of looking at life! There are things in this book I would like to do just to see if I can get away with it. Somewhat offensive at times and definitely imaginative, this is a great gift for someone who truly hates his or her job! Perfect for putting on the coffee table and flipping through occasionally to give yourself a good laugh! Since there are so many references to the "bathroom" in this book, I guess it would also make a great bathroom book!
Book Description
Just under the surface of mainstream American music and culture is a new generation, teens who steer clear of prepackaged pop and rap and have chosen something completely new and different-it's called EMO: sweetly melodic guitar punk with lyrics about love and sensitivity. Much like the punk movement in the '70s and '80s, EMO culture is sweeping up a fan base of teenagers who are ready for something new, something different, something unlike anything the world has seen before. Using websites to chat, hear new bands, and find out about upcoming events, tons of teens are already obsessed with this new and exciting move-ment where music and the Internet come together. Creeping into the consciousness of American pop culture, EMO bands like Jimmy Eat World, The Get Up Kids, and Saves The Day have become phenomenally popular just under the mainstream radar. Articles in the press (Rolling Stone, Spin, NME) are helping this counterculture take off, and Andy Greenwald has written the first book about this up-and-coming musical and cultural sensation.
Customer Reviews:
Feels good until the topic shifts.......2007-09-04
Andy Greenwald's "Nothing Feels Good: Punk Rock, Teenagers and Emo" is a fascinating journalistic investigation into the hard-to-define musical genre "emo." Chronicling the growth of the musical movement from its birth in the early 80s until 2003 when the book was published, Greenwald has composed a piece of rock journalism similar in style to the works of Chuck Klosterman or even the later works of Lester Bangs.
Greenwald's enthusiasm for his subject matter is born out of his day job writing for Spin magazine, The Village Voice and The Washington Post. The NYC-dwelling Greenwald has also penned a more recent novel titled "Miss Misery" incorporating similar subject matter.
Greenwald has a fascination with misery, as sadness is a quintessential part of the emo definition. Greenwald fleshes out the main idea of emo as punk-rock based music made as an artist's catharsis that teenagers latch onto and associate emotionally with.
To make sure the reader gets the point, Greenwald dedicates almost a third of the book to the most depressing of all emo acts, Dashboard Confessional. The nearly reverential tone that he uses in describing the de facto leader of the movement emphasizes the main point of this book: music, emotion and memories are inextricably tied together in the minds of teenagers.
Even though Greenwald does analyze the social trend of emo through case studies on bands, the best parts of the book come when he practices his bill-paying craft and enthusiastically describes the bands and labels associated with the genre. From the absurdly cocky Vagrant Records to the painfully humble Jimmy Eat World, Greenwald shows many ways that the confessional candor which embodies the emo movement can manifest itself. The various angles that Greenwald uses to approach the point keep this from being a tiresomely repetitive read.
It's when Greenwald diverges from the music side of emo that the book goes south. The last 41 pages crawl by as Greenwald turns his eye to online communities and their hyper-dramatic emotions their users proudly display. In contrast to the giddy descriptiveness of the first 269 pages, the section on Livejournal.com and Makeoutclub.com lacks any luster at all.
"Nothing Feels Good: Punk Rock, Teenagers and Emo" is a well-researched, mostly quick-moving read. Fans of underground music of the last fifteen years (emo or non) will have a great time playing the "ha! I liked that band first!" game, as well as learning about an often-misunderstood genre.
My Review.......2006-05-22
NOTHING FEELS GOOD in my opinion is one of the few books that really does explain who are the 'emo kids.' Andy Greenwald explains to the readers that the 'emo kids' are the regular teenagers with regular problems dealing with regular life. Greenwald's 'How to have a nervous breakdown' is one the most humerous things that I, myself, have read in a long time. The main subject that I think Greenwald covers well is teenagers and the internet. Being a teen myself, he really puts it into perspective about who teenagers are internet savvy, not only that, that they use the internet as a outlet for expression. Live jornal, myspace, xanga, makeout club, and anything that envolves an audience is a typical site a teen with use to express there emotions. Greenwald breaks down teenagers emotions and gives an in-depth idea about the term, 'emo'. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to know what goes on in a teen's mind when the internet and music is involved. Greenwald takes a highly confusing topic of 'emo' and gives it his own meaning which is the reason why I bought the book and why you should read it.
excellent book.......2005-10-03
I really thought that this book was one of the best things that I have ever read. I am of course a "emo" kid, so I was affected on a deep level just by reading it. I always had trouble explaining to people what the difference was between emo and normal punk. As well as convinving them that it was more than just whiney woman hating music. This book was the answer to that question for me. Not to mention the excellent writing style of Andy Greenwald. I would strongly suggest that if you are a fan of emo, you should read this.
Justin
Made me feel like I was actually a part of something.......2005-07-31
Nothing Feels Good was first recommend to me by a friend, at first I didn't pay any mind to it, but when I finally picked it up, I regretted not doing it sooner. This book defiantly made me feel good. AS soon as I started reading, I had an infectious smile on my face, that stayed with me from page one to the back cover. Most teens feel like they don't belong in their current environment, and I have felt this way before, but when I read this book, it made me think 'Yes I do belong, I'm not the only one who feels this way" I recommend it to anyone who has felt this way. Or any one who just wants to read about good music. Andy Greenwald has become one of my favorite writers, and I can't wait for his next work. . .
melissa chavez rules.......2005-07-07
My friend Melissa Chavez is mentioned in the book and everyone should read about her and dashboard confessional and the most beautiful thing she ever created. It's somewhere in the book and thats what makes the book great. melissa.
i hope she comes back to new york soon.

GREAT for all GROUPS!.......2000-06-02
This is a great book for anyone who is working with kids. The games are easy to set up and the prop cost is minimal but the results are huge! I have used several of these game nights with my youth group (grades 4-7) and they are always asking me when the next game night is. The instructions are clear and the book will spark your own ideas for other games too. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is running a church youth group or a sunday school program and doesn't mind getting messy!

Good Study Guide for the price.......2007-04-12
I am currently studying for the network+ exam and I chose this book because it comes with a cd with over 650 questions. I previously purchased the A+ exam cram book and passed it with ease. I also purchased the CCNA book and passed the intro exam. I'll take the ICND in a few months. Make sure you get the exam cram book with the measure up test engine, the prep logic test engine doesn't have nearly as many questions. You can tell by looking at the front cover of the book.
The only draw back to the testing engine is that a handful of questions have the wrong answers. The explanations for these questions do not match the answers given. 5 questions at the most.
This is a good substitute for the study guides that costs more than the exam itself.
Excellent preparation tool........2007-01-11
The practice CD that comes with this book is a fine study tool for Exam N10-003. When I installed the disk, I was given the option to download the update to the question base. I'm assuming that some of the questions others have complained about were corrected with the update. I couldn't find any wrong answers, and the explanations were right on target. These questions serve to drive Network+ concepts home. They may not be the exact questions that are on the actual test, but they sure do help in preparing you for the exam.
Very Helpful.......2006-08-05
This is the 3rd book I used to help me pass the Exam. First, I bought a big thick one, then a smaller one, and finally this one. The main reason I bought this book was for the questions: 650 practice questions! All the other training books just give you 10 questions per chapter; no way near enough to test someone. However, my suggestion is to not even use the book. Just use the CD that comes with it, becuase it has all the questions from the book, and you can grade your answer instantly instead of having to turn to all different pages.
I will admit though, there are some errors on questions. I've found quite a few mistakes in this book, but at any rate, these book really helps out. I took the test today and saw some quite a couple of similar questions from this book on the exam.
Frustrating .......2006-03-14
I'd say about 70% of the book's content is okay. Not an excellent measure of your networking knowledge, but a start. The other 30% is purely fluff. But when you add it all together, this book is 100% frustrating.
First the fluff part: You are asked a question about a given topic. Then you are asked virtually the exact same question again. Four questions later - Yep, there's that question again. Turn the page - again. Asking the same question (on the same page or within pages of each other) 3 or 4 times with little modification is such a waste of time. The knowledge can be tested in just one. If it is important enough to ask again, at least approach it from a different perspective.
Second - and the worst part - was that time and time again the correct answer to a question was miss-marked in the answer key. For example, if the answer was supposed to be C. HTML, the detailed explanation of the answer in the back of the book would say something like "Yes! You're right: The answer is A. HTML," which also meant that the quick answer key was wrong as well. So, expect lots of extra work trying to decipher the correct answer and the confusion that usually comes with it. I must have come across this 20 or 30 times in a book with hundreds of questions. Simply unacceptable.
Because of these two reasons, I nearly threw this book in the garbage a few times. Sad to say that the Exam Cram series' credibility - and Ed Tittel's famed "editing abilities" - takes a hit with this one.
Do Not Buy This Book!.......2006-01-17
I was highly disappointed at the inaccuracy of the questions (min 4/per chapter as another reviewer wrote). I had taken a Net+ class about a year ago and worked 5 yrs in Techsupport so I wanted this to be a refresher. ExamCram test prep showed I was scoring 95 - 98% so I felt confident on taking the exam. When I read the questions on the exam, my heart sank. The book did NOT prepare me for the exam. There were items on there the practice questions didn't cover. Needless to say I didn't pass, am very disappointed in this product and it's going in the trash. Don't make the same mistake I did! Buy another book!!!

Great information!.......2007-02-09
I have gone to school for the last two and a half years. This book covers information in such a clear way that I have learned more from it than from the textbooks I have read and the IT classes I have taken.
This is the one!.......2006-12-02

Agree with "Dumb Guy.".......2006-11-23
I'm a mid-40s, blue-collar type undergoing career change. I'm taking computer classes to prepare for A+, Network+, Server+, and Security+ certification testings. The writing was intended for those with a bachelor degree level of education/comprehension. I have ISBN 0782144314 by Mark Minasi, and his writing is easy to follow (and humorous to break monotony of study/memorize/regurgitate). Others in my Network class who are struggling agree with me that the writing format is for IT intermediate level (or above) students. I ordered ISBN 061921743X by Tamara Dean. Her approach/presentation is easy to follow along. I've shown the book to my instructor and he has agreed to go with this text next semester.
Too Much Is Never Enough........2006-11-11
While I agree with the previous reviewer that said there is more information than is needed to pass the exam, I don't see that as a bad thing. The author's stated intention, which he points out serveral times throughout the book, is to help the reader become a proficient network technician, not just pass the exam with the bare minimum understanding of the topics. That is why I gave this book a 5 star review. In addition to that, the writing style is clear and to the point. The explanations are very easy to understand, especially the chapter on IP subnetting. I used to bang my head against the wall trying to figure out the complexities of subnetting, but, in a few short pages in this book, Shimonski has cleared up all of my frustrations with this particular subject. I also very much liked the chapter on wireless technologies and the security issuses surrounding wireless access, after reading it, I had the confidence I needed to set up a secure wireless network, with a firewall, for my home based PC repair business.
I plan on taking my Network+ Cert exam by the end of December, which will give me enough time to re-read this excellent book again from cover to cover. That coupled with my previous A+ certification, should allow me to pass my exam with flying colors.
Thank you to Robert Shimonski for writing this excellent certification guide.
Too Much Informatin.......2006-10-18
I have many Network+ books. This one in particular has a lot of information other books do not contain. However, this is way too much information for a Network+ book. The information in this book would be well suited for a book on "In-Depth Networking". Yes it can help you with the Network+ exam, but almost half of the information in here will not be needed to pass the Net+ exam. I have even written to the author and was told this book was written with "The learned in mind". I would say you need at least 2 years of Networking experience to fully understand the concepts in this book. This book is not written for beginners, so I have to say its not a very good book to prepare you for the Network+.
