Clement C. Moore's beloved poem about Santa's arrival on Christmas Eve has been illustrated by hundreds of artists since its first publication in 1823. Two collectors of antique children's books have selected a variety of these charming pictures from Arthur Rackham, Jessie Willcox Smith, Thomas Nast, and other renowned children's illustrators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of the images are from versions of the poem; a few are from antique postcards or magazines. Source notes for all the illustrations are included. Santa is dressed differently by each artist, but he is always "chubby and plump--a right jolly old elf" who brings joy to all good little girls and boys. This attractive edition of The Night Before Christmas will be enjoyed most by collectors of children's books or lovers of things Victorian. Youngsters who are already familiar with the poem will delight in comparing the different old-fashioned Santas and the children of long ago "nestled all snug in their beds." A charming holiday gift to leave under the tree on Christmas Eve for anyone who believes in the magic of Santa Claus. (Ages 5 to adult) --Marcie Bovetz
Book Description
Celebrate this classic tale with a twist! Clement C. Moore's classic text has been illustrated in many different ways - from traditional to contemporary art styles. But here's a new twist on this old favorite - William Wegman's favorite weimaraners posing as Santa, reindeers, and the well-loved narrator in his nightcap.
This rendition of The Night Before Christmas is sure to become a new classic.
Customer Reviews:
A Classic! .......2007-08-31
The best illustrations for this classic poem I've ever seen! Wonderful large format - perfect for reading aloud.
The holiday spirit........2007-01-10
This book is exactly what I was looking for. The quality of pictures is both nostalgic and whimsical. The well known story is in print even grandma can read! The holiday spirit is alive and well in this book.
Night Before Christmas.......2006-12-04
This is a great book. I have read the one in the Random House Pictureback series. The illustrations in the book are what really stand out. They are colorful and detailed and go great with the writing. They are some of the best illustrations I have seen in a book. This is a great book to read to younger or childern. The story is great but the illustrations are what really makes it a great childrens book.
Wonderful Version!.......2006-09-08
Some of the reviewers seem confused about which version this is. I am referring to the Random House Pictureback version that is illustrated by Douglas Gorsline (ISBN 0-394-83019-9). The version I am referring to is not abridged or censored. It even includes the line about the pipe and smoke.
The illustrations are stunningly detailed and authentic. They remind me quite a bit of the beautiful illustrations in another children's classic "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs". Make sure to look for the cat in all the pictures that take place in or around the house! You will never tire of reading this one to your little one! I will warn you, however, that this book might wear out quickly because you will read it so often!
Such a Beautiful Story for any age.......2005-12-22
This is such a beautiful book so elegant in the illustrations & the story or poem is timeless and will never ever get old. No matter how old we get. A must buy for everyones library. We bring it out each year, it just isn't Christmas without reading the Night before Christmas....(& Charlie Brown Christmas)

An Adorable Book.......2001-12-06
This is an adorable parody of the story The Night Before Christmas. The illustrations are great, and the book is small enough to fit in your pocket. Not only that, it comes with a little charm that you can put on a bracelet.
This is a must read for any dog lover.

Book Description
What does music mean? Common sense ideas (and even many kinds of theory) do surprisingly little to answer this question. For example, a familiar statement such as "music reflects society" treats both terms as if they were separate, timeless things instead of ongoing and related processes. Moreover, the intensely personal dimension of music is lost in the shuffle of abstraction.
If music is a genuinely immediate experience, and as such essentially disconnected from everything else in our lives, then it is beyond or outside what words can explain. If, however, music is a part of the story of our lives--if it is historical--then its stories lie within the realm of our capacities to learn about ourselves.
Such stories cannot replace or compete with music, but can help us to understand it. Consider the statement "music expresses emotion." While it may seem to be self-evident, a cursory glance at the worlds of music shows that this is a strange, even incomprehensible idea to most people in the world. At the same time, this perspective has a documented history. We can say how we got to believe that "music expresses emotion," by examining the cultural worlds which have preceded and engendered our own.
Each historical world of musical experience is at once unique and exemplary, a direct manifestation of human possibility. This work addresses these issues by showing their connections to the traditions of musical time and social discussion. Logical and semantic problems are analyzed through the Kantian philosophy of time. Following a general correlation of this conception to the discourse of social theory, the argument expounds the core details of musical time: rhythm, pulse, beat, and finally song structure. These concepts show how musical experience spatializes time, creating a kind of logical specificity congruent with other dimensions of our social experience, and thereby open to comprehensible discourse.

The bottom line.......2005-04-25
This book is the bottom line, the base of the pyramid. All others I have read-and I have very many-rest on it. It explains the why, the where and the how of different types of drum circles and how, when one is called upon to do so, to facilitate them so that they live and create music on their own. While there are many facilitator "tricks" and techniques, the message is always that the circle is not to serve as a platform for a facilitator performance, but that the facilitator's job is only to get the music the circle is making past places where it starts to self destruct and back into solid playing. There is a great deal of anecdotal information about how specific difficult situations were handled as well as examples of wonderful, joyful exhuberance. If you are new to drum circles, and especially if you need or want to facilitate them, this is the FIRST book you buy.
The definitive book on circles!!.......2003-01-10
Arthur Hull hits the nail on the head with his book, Drum Circle Spirit. Without this book to use as a guide, I would feel lost!... I call it simply "REQUIRED READING" for those who care about their community and friends who wish to drum in a group setting. It empowers most anyone to begin and conduct their own drum circle. THANK YOU ARTHUR!
I was really amazed by this book........2002-10-22
As a Christian wanting to start a church-oriented drum-circle, I was somewhat concerned that this book would be full of propaganda that would run counter to my Christian values. (Making it annoying to read at the least, and at worst, difficult to convince other Christians in my church of its value.) While some of the author's values come through (especially with references to "tithing to Rhythm Church" and the like) there's nothing in here to really offend any particular religious belief. There's no "we can heal the world with drums, just think good thoughts and good things will happen to you" message here. It's practical advice on how to bring out the best in a group of drummers.
Arthur's numerous anecdotes are entertaining and informative. They really conveyed the spirit of what Arthur does with his drum-circles.
I'm very anxious to get started applying what I've learned (and will continue to learn) from this book, and it has convinced me to attend one of Arthur Hull's Facilitator Playshops. Arthur's teaching in the book is very clear, presented in small, easily-digested steps, and most of all, very encouraging. The whole book shouts, "You can do this, it isn't that hard!"
I've very pleased that Arthur has taken the time to share his hard-earned wisdom with the rest of us. If you're wanting to start a drum-circle, work with kids through rhythm, or any such activity, you can't afford not to own this book.
What we need.......2002-04-07
This guy is a modern Trickster! At first you wonder, is this guy a joke? Then as you read more, you realize, yes he is, thank god! But be aware; this is a book about building community; if you want a book about drumming, look to Mickey Hart.
Drum Circle Spirit.......2002-01-08
This book and CD set has wonderful examples of drum circle games and exercises. He and his facilitators also share their drum stories and let us know how fun it can be to be an "Arthurian" facilitator! Get a bunch of friends together and PRACTICE these games!(It REALLY comes to life after attending one of Arthur's facilitator playshops!!!)

Book Description
Each of the more than seven hundred entries in the dictionary contains a description of the historical background of each of the two types of language, literal and nonliteral, and provides an explanation for the relationship between them. Wherever possible, dates of "first record" in English are provided, along with the bibliographical sources of these dates; and all of the works that record those terms and expressions are given in coded form as listed in the Key to Works Cited. A Guide to Reading the Entries illustrates the typical form of an entry by analyzing an example from the dictionary that introduces five nonliteral expressions, cites thirteen bibliographical sources, and refers the reader to three other relevant entries by means of cross-references. Following the dictionary proper is a Classification of Terms According to Source, in which nearly three hundred nonliteral terms and expressions are listed under the more than four hundred literal categories from which they derive.
Customer Reviews:
Food for Thought.......2001-06-24
As collector of dictionaries, and someone interested in histories of food I picked this book up, looked at the price and said, "How good is this?". At first glance it seemed general; the price more impressive, until I began to read each entry. I was swept up into the pages finding wonderful metaphors, quotes, proverbs, and idiomatic language. English slang of both the UK and USA. After reading it for 20 minutes I decided it was worth purchasing, much food for thought. Spices are thin hence my four stars instead of five. It is filled with interesting tidbits of history and is a wonderful resource.

Customer Reviews:
Don't waste your money.......2006-03-25
This book has lots of nice pictures.. but for learning home networking it is juvenile and lacks depth of explanation across multiple network routers, connection nodes, and how-tos. Don't waste your money.
An Expanded Linksys Manual.......2006-01-23
This would be an excellent getting started guide if it was included with a Linksys product, but it is disappointing as a separate purchase. Most of the step-by-step instructions presume that you have purchased a Linksys product. If you use another brand, this book may not give you much help. Even if you have a Linksys product, don't expect much coverage of intermediate or advanced topics. For instance, the book mentions remotely controlling a network computer, but it doesn't explain how to do it other than to briefly mention a few programs. I was expecting a little better coverage based on the previous reviews.
Nice Intro to Home Networking.......2005-08-30
This was a helpful and easy to understand guide book to home networking. I'm sure I'll reuse it as a reference guide for future networking projects. It covers the basics and provides detailed illustration for windows based wireless and ethernet networks. You'll learn about choosing the right network for you, what hardware options to buy, installation, setup, security, sharing.
A Dummies Guide from Cisco with Linksys Plugs.......2005-04-10
Not that many years ago, many people felt they needed either a technician or a 12-year-old to install and set-up a PC. Many homes now are starting to have more than one PC. Yet broadband connections and high quality printers are expensive if you buy one for each PC. How can those costs be reduced? Add a home network.
Before you faint with anxiety, look at this very simple book. It will guide you through the few technical questions you need to address and give you complete and simple directions you can easily follow (but feel free to recruit a 12-year-old to help you).
Before you are done reading, you will also realize that you may also benefit from being able to put noisy printers in quiet places, eliminate cables, and do lots of neat applications (like visually monitor your children's rooms and front door) with your network.
If you are like me, you've heard that wireless networks can easily be hacked into. This book tells you how to address those very real security problems.
As I stand on the brink of our first home network, I am clutching this book in both hands . . . and am ready to launch myself into familial shared cyberspace saying, "I think I can do it. I think I can do it. I think I can do it." And I know you can!
The only annoying quality about this book comes from the many plugs for Linksys products. But that's better than not having photographs and examples, so I bore with it.
This book is not only simple; you can read it very quickly.
It could have been greatly improved though by concentrating the material throughout around whether you want a wired or wireless network after providing an initial chapter that helped you choose one or the other. Now, you have to slog through every page to find all the information you need for one or the other. Perhaps in a future edition, this book will be updated to deal with that problem.
Great little book for home networkers..........2005-03-22
I have read many of Mr. Underdahl's technical books over the years. I was in the bookstore recently and saw this on the shelf... I work in the IT arena and am always looking for books for my clients that can provide walkthroughs in a simple and clear, but competent, delivery. This is one of them. Sat down and read about half of it in the store and was very impressed. Definitely not for an advanced IT person or someone who wants heavy nuts-and-bolts type info, but for the 99.9% of the population that wants to get that home network up and running and also learn how to strengthen it and make it better and more useful (say, home office users), this is a great start.
