If you would like to record a family member's story or interview someone, this books goes through the stages of a life logically and provides the questions to each stage. eg childhood, youth etc. I use the questions as a base and change them to my needs. It has provided excellent starting point. It even has a special section for different ethnicty/religion ie Jewish section, African American questions. Fanatastic book!!!!

i wouldn't waste your money on this book. The only way i can describe it is useless. Unless you plan on starting a donald trump sized electrical business with 500 employees. This book is all about running a huge business and has about one reference to the electrical field in it. Anyone starting an electrical contracting business isn't gonna start anywhere within the scope of this book.

I simultaneously had my heart warmed and was roaring with laughter reading this very accurate portrayal of 1950s-1960s era "St. Froid" in northern Vermont. Author Lucille Maurice Maistros conveys humor, warmth, the strength of family and faith, and the wonderful zaniness that is St. Froid throughout the book.I truly enjoyed every page of her book. A definite 5 star rating and I can't wait for a sequel!

Wonderfully Entertaining!.......2005-11-20

Lucille Maistros's debut memoir reveals that she is a master storyteller, cleverly crafting her stories, chapter at a time. Each chapter, represented by the month of the year, covered memorable moments from her youth, from her "vaseline" hair day that left a grease mark on her pillow, to the Halloween Cinderella dress where she had to wear her winter coat underneath it due to the cold temperatures. Her vivid descriptions of St. Froid and Mountain Avenue will long be remembered. I felt as if I were there, experiencing everything.

As I was reading the book, my laughter caused my family to inquire as to what was so funny. After I read a passage, which described her having to get underneath the school desks for the "bomb" and staring at another kid's backside, they broke out laughing. I ended up reading it aloud at our dinner table. This became a daily event every evening, followed by bouts of laughter, as her funny descriptions tickled our funnybones.

There were also endearing moments, like the Christmas she was fourteen, and realized she was too old for toys - and how important that Christmas was to her, and how her father gave her a surprise gift, a doll, letting her know that she would always be his little girl.

The recipes and interesting quotes scattered throughout the book were also a nice touch.

What a fascinating read! Her stories will be remembered for ages. I look forward to reading her next book!

Memories of My Youth.......2005-04-04

This book by Ms. Maistros brought back so many images of my younger days. I grew up in New England during this era and could identify with many of the visual images that she created with the book. I can remember the cold and snow. We share the same ethnic background and family customs. As I read this piece I would laugh out loud. Thank you Ms. Maistros for giving me a portal back to my youth, to a time when we thought life was tough. If we had only known what was to come. I too appreciate that life.

Perhaps it was a white jazz musician's need to negate his very ordinary American boyhood, or maybe it was in the genes he inherited from his alcoholic father--no one can be quite sure--but Bill Evans, one of the most influential American jazz pianists ever, was a drug addict. He picked up his habit shortly after joining the Miles Davis Sextet in the 1950s, but it took Evans more than 20 years to be swallowed by the abyss of heroin, methadone, and cocaine. Sitting at the piano in the shadow of Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones--the era's paragons of cool--could not have been easy for the retiring musician who suffered harsh ribbing at the hands of both bandmates and fans. Ironically, as the drugs distorted Evans's body and soul, his fingers coaxed ever more sublime music from his keyboard. Mainly for fans, but solid.......2007-09-26

As other reviewers have noted, this is a rather dry tome in some ways, but if you appreciate Evans' musical genius at all, then it's a worthwhile read.
Not a lot of gossip here, although Bill's junk and blow issues are honestly but never obsessively dealt with. I love the scene where Bill gets a ten grand advance in the early 60s and has his pal drive him around to all the friends who loaned him money for smack rather than see him get in deep with the mob. Bill paid every debt he had; not a typical junkie to be sure, and one more reason to respect the man's heart. It's also nice to trace Bill quitting his habit.
The first trio is discussed in much depth; LaFaro's death was clearly a massive blow from which the pianist never fully recovered.
Above all this is a real tribute to Evans' music, with plenty of tales of the making of each album. It helps if you know a little musical theory; there's a fair bit of discussion of Bill's unique harmonic concept, and his innovative use of inner voice movement. If you don't know A from Bb, however, it won't matter; there's a ton of interesting stories here anyhow.
This is by and for serious Evans fans, but if you're a real devotee of his splendid piano mastery, this is a true gem; it made me love the man and his music even more.

Very informative and easy to read.......2007-08-29

For Jazz Piano fans this is a must have book, written by a concert pianist Peter Pettinger. This is a lot more than the cobbled together batch of newspaper stories you get with biographies of some pop stars. There is a brief look at his early years, but mostly the book concentrates on the music and a few of the major events in Bill Evans sadly short life.

A lot of time and research has gone into this fascinating book. Did you know for example that Conversations with Myself was recorded on the same Steinway Piano as Glenn Gould used from 1960 onwards? If you are a musician and hoping for transcriptions there is only one, and it is only a small section. There is also the head to Peri's scope wriiten out on a Village Vanguard menu by Bill Evans!

Sadly hepatitis in his youth, drug abuse, and just unbelievable bad luck lead to Bill Evans death at 50. He has left us a huge range of recordings to listen to, as evidenced by the huge discography at the back of this book.

This is a marvellous biography of one the most important Jazz pianists in history.

Distorted, Dull, and Uninformative.......2005-12-25

This is not so much a biography as an annotated discography. Immensely significant aspects of Bill Evans's life are either mentioned only in passing are else skipped over entirely. Mostly this book comprises a seemingly endless and thoroughly tedious compilation of superficial descriptions of Bill Evans recording sessions.

Very occasionally the book attempts to impart some actual musical information, and this is where it falls flattest and is most misleading. The author is purportedly some kind of pianist himself, and he seems to labor under a great pianistic misapprehension. There is in fact an entire page of this book devoted to an appreciation of the tone Evans allegedly teases out of a SINGLE ISOLATED note. Here's a news flash, Mr. Pettinger: The pianist controls ONLY the velocity that the hammer hits the strings, which is to say, the dynamic. He can emphasize certain notes in a chord or a melodic line by playing them louder than others, he can play legato, portato, or staccato by putting more or less silence between notes, and so on, but at a given dynamic on a given piano a single isolated note will sound the same whether played by Bill Evans or your pet cat.

The author also seems to believe that Bill Evans's distinction is that he was the first (or even remains the only) jazz pianist with classical training, which is, of course, nonsense. I'd tentatively (I haven't researched this thoroughly or taken a poll) go so far as to say that classical training for jazz pianists is--and was then--the rule rather than the exception. In any case, classical training is certainly not Bill Evans's DISTINCTION as a jazz pianist.

A Tough Slog.......2005-12-06

Having read The Making of Kind Of Blue just previous to this book, and seeking an insight into Bill Evans, I was quickly disappointed by the academic approach to this book. I'm not a pianist and I don't read music, though I am a musician, and the dry details of every gig and recording were little more stimulating than the reading out loud of a schedule book, in my opinion. The sheer volume of names, sometimes dozens to a page, was mind-numbing--even though I recognized every one.

Music is best appreciated when listened to, not read about, so in my opinion this book deserves to be on the high and dusty shelves of a conservatory library rather than on my shelf next to the dynamic biographies of Miles Davis and yes, Elton John--books that really gave me an insight into the people behind the music.

Record collectors and music devotees listen up.......2005-02-02

A conscientious effort written by a musician concentrating on Mr Evans' recorded legacy with considerable detail and assessment on the various records issued. As Mr Evans was more concerned with music than any other thing in his life, I'm sure he would approved. But the feeling that was the essential element in everything Mr Evans produced is somewhat absent in this bio. Not a gripping read but one I would not be without.

I chose to read abouth this book because the book gives you the details that you need do you can think that you are actually in the book.

I also think that the book gives you the full life story of how and why Houdini got into the Magic Business. The book also asks you how you think the book should have been wrote and what things you would change and why you would change them.

This book gives you the Information on how Houdini lived his life and who he wanted to live his life with. On the other hand this book is a really good thing to read because they explain it so clearly and they should make a sequel to this book because I think that the readers would take the interest into reading this.

"Houdini: The Man Who Walked Through Walls" relates the fascinating journey of Harry Houdini, born Ehrich Weiss in Pest, Hungary, through boyhood in Appleton, Wisconsin, to maturity in New York city and to the pinnacle of the escape artist profession. Erich, the son of a rabbi, adopted the name "Houdini" to honor his magician idol, Robert-Houdin, after being told that, in French, the addition of an "I" gave the meaning of "like", hence, "like Houdin". His idolization of Robert-Houdin continued until Robert-Houdin's widow spurned his homage, after which he utilized every opportunity to disparage the memory of Robert-Houdin.

This book highlights Houdini the Showman. It does this by chronicling Houdini's repeated publicity stunts and tours through two continents. The reader may be surprised to learn that Houdini first achieved success in Europe, where he spent much of his career on tour. Houdini's modus operandi was to fill the stands by conducting publicity stunts, often by releasing himself from the best bindings the local police or workers in insane asylums could muster. Another stunt was to jump off of a bridge while bound in chains and then to release himself before drowning. While not writing a "How to" book, author William Lindsay Gresham gives some insight into how Houdini accomplished his feats of daring do. Throughout this book, the fragility of Houdini's career is manifested by his series of short runs in theatres across the U.S. and Europe. The nature of Houdini's career starting with magic tricks and advancing to escape routines develops as the book advances. Toward the end of his career, Houdini, as president of the Society of American Magicians, undertook the crusade of driving frauds, prominently spiritual mediums, out of the profession.

Houdini's personal relationships are related primarily through examples of devotion to his mother and in the long personal and professional relationships with his wife, Bess. Beyond that, the reader learns of a few other relatives and co-workers, but the personal side is definitely a secondary theme in the book.

This book is not a true biography, in that it primarily focuses only on Houdini's career, with relatively little about his personality and personal life. It is largely a collection of anecdotes that he did this here, then that there, with little but chronology to hold them together. To the reader to whom Houdini is little more than name, this book presents the opportunity to become much more familiar with the career that made his name famous.

Disappointing, Only Covers the Very Basics.......2007-08-27

This book has several issues. The first is that it is not written for any specific version of Adobe Premiere Elements. You will note a clear avoidance of tying this book to any software release. Therefore the book deviates from reality with Adobe 3.0 in several areas. This alone would be a reason to avoid this book.

My second issue is that this book only covers the most basic of steps, which are repeated in tutorials that you get when you purchase Adobe 3.0. Therefore, I can so no reason to purchase this obsolete book.

Visual QuickProject Guide .......2007-08-14

Disappointed to find this was for the earlier version of Premiere Elements and it did not contain the new important features. The classroom training book by Adobe is far better.

Good add-on book.......2006-03-04

This book provides color visuals and is a good add-on to "Adobe Premiere Elements for Dummies". I will not recommend it an independent guide to Premier elements as it is a little sparse on details.

Information without confusion.......2006-02-25

Wanting to transfer my camcoder footage and Video tape footage of my family holidays to DVD I came across the Making a Movie in Premiere Elements a Visual QuickProject Guide book,the reviews looked very good,so I took a chance and bought it.I have not been dissapointed,in fact I was well impressed.Its explained to you simply and in pictures that make you understand what its all about.It gave me,a 49 year old newcomer to camcorder/video editing,the confidence to go ahead and use Premier Elements (also works for Premier Elements 2.)I have found this to be money wery well spent.I sincerely recommend this.

I got this as a gift for a friend, but I have always had great luck with the Visual Quickstart books and would recommend them to anyone who needs to learn an application.
