It covers each department of a property and its organization and responsibilities, the methods of marketing a property, and legal requirements faced by properties. From the supplier: South Africa offers both opportunities and challenges for international hotel chains. While the country still has an untapped, expanding market, international hoteliers with investment plans in South Africa are advised to adopt a cautious approach. Companies have to consider government policies and incentives for the hotel industry, the level of market competition, the country's hotel grading standards and the conditions or attractiveness of the market and the opportunities that are available. They also have to deal with other persistent problems such as shortage of skilled labor, crime and the difficulties of foreign exchange.

Not What I expected.......2006-03-18
I guess I was expecting more. . . . Like a comic or an adventure, or something. The title and description made it seem FAR better than it was. I would have returned it if it was possible. Don't waste the money or time. Can I give it less than one star?
Funny. Tasteful. Great Gift........2002-05-11
This has to be one of the most tastefully written adult comic books I've read. Witty, well designed and makes an excellent gift for both men and women. The artistic flavor and tasteful designs make this one of the best gift ideas.

Based on extensive conversation with Roger Waters, this detailed book refers to lyrics, album covers, musical details, and concepts of each Pink Floyd album.
Customer Reviews:
a lot of insight.......2007-08-17
If you're interested in an intelligent discussion of Pink Floyd's concept albums, this is a great read. One negative about this book is how SMALL the actual book is. Another is that the author got some input from Roger Waters, but evidently not all that much input. Still, it does a good job of pulling from many other sources AND contributing original insights.
Pretentious.......2007-01-05
I consider myself a huge fan of Pink Floyd, but this book was not interesting at all. Phil Rose takes it upon himself to talk about the meaning of specific notes and patterns in the songs. For example (paraphrased) it went from B to G, and although the listener expects the D it just goes back to the B. I suppose some might be interested in this, but it's not for me. I want to read about what the album means, and although he does go into this I would have to imagine there are better books out there for this purpose.
Floydian philosophy.......2005-08-22
This book is very well articulated. It provides deep insite into the ideas and meaning behind Roger Waters and his conceptual albums while with pink floyd. This book is not for a casual reader, as it will go over many peoples heads. This book refrences many philosophers and psychologists in order to fully evaluate the conceptual ideas presented. A great read recommended for the musically informed closet intelectual
Two flaws -- one is major........2003-09-29
I would love to give this book five stars. I agree with the thrust of the other reviewers. Phil Rose knows his stuff -- I say this as an amateur musicologist myself, who grew up analyzing Pink Floyd albums, sometimes sitting at the piano to perform 'The Final Cut' or 'Pros and Cons' in one sitting. Mr. Rose has tried, and mostly succeeded, to write an indispensable work for the more intellectual fans of Roger Waters's Pink Floyd.
However, readers deserved to be warned of, at least, the biggest flaw in this product: It is VERY POORLY BOUND. Pages began to fall out of this paperback during my first read. Because this is such a quality piece of writing, I want to consult it over and over again. Thus, the majority of pages in my copy are loose -- something like, pages 16 thru 54. Knowing this, would I not buy the book? No. It's essential. I just wish for a properly-bound edition. I'll gladly buy the work a second time, if it's not the piece of junk this paperback edition is.
Second complaint -- and this one is directed at the author himself: Phil Rose relies too much on the film version of The Wall, in his analysis of the actual music. This is unfortunate and misguided. We know Roger Waters is not satisfied with the film, that it is heavily-weighted with director Alan Parker's ideas, that there were conflicts about this, and that Waters hopes to re-cast The Wall as a lighter, more elevating musical. Parker's "Wall" is a non-dynamic "downer" which has probably caused more MISinterpretation of Waters's work than a generation of Floydophobic journalists were able to.
A separate sidebar on the film might have been appropriate, or perhaps just a reduction of film-related analysis. What's obvious is that Rose managed unassailable insight into the other four concept albums, WIHTOUT the guidance of a movie -- so why was it necessary at all to include the Alan Parker film?
I hope it's clear that I am STILL recommending you BUY and READ the book! But this is an academic work, not a fluff piece -- thus we owe it to the the publishers, the author, and the consumers to be vigorously honest about it's failures and missteps.
The definitive interpretation of Pink Floyd's concept albums.......2002-01-06
By God, this book will blow your mind if your a Pink Floyd fan. From unlocking all the ambiguity in the lyrics and music of "Dark Side of the Moon" to being able to completely comprehend the depth of "Animals" and "The Wall," Pete Rose's coherent writing is so interesting and concise that you will hardly be able to put this book down, except the times when your brain tries to recover from its understanding of the genius of Roger Waters. Also this book certianly engraves Waters' place as one of the top 5 lyricists of all time, if not the greatest simply on the merit of the intense detail and scope involved in his concept albums. Pink Floyd's albums are revolutionary, and Pete Rose's documentation of all of their intriguing fascists is too.

This is a truly fabulous piece of criticism........2000-04-18
Ellmann's work is a must-read for anyone interested in anorexia in literature. As theory, it is remarkably readable, interesting, and compelling. Her reading of Richardson's Clarissa actually makes one want to read the longest novel in the English language, and her work on hunger strikers from various movements (focusing on Irish nationalists and suffragettes) is really fascinating. This book has changed the way I think about a lot of things.

A effective training tool for Excel tutors.......2007-05-25
This particular series of instructional books (meaning the "QuickSteps" series) has always been one of my favorites -- they're concisely written in short paragraphs with decent descriptive pictures to help anyone learn just about any type of software application.
While I found this book to be fairly complete, I'd still only recommend it as a desk-side reference manual to use along with Microsoft tutorials themselves. While it is a cleverly written book that is not as cumbersome to use as other reference books on the market, it does not address all of the finer points of Excel.
All in all, it's a great reference book, and let's face it, sometimes it's just easier to review a chapter a few times to digest material rather than stare at a computer screen until you become cross-eyed.
All in all, I'd probably give this book a 4.5, but since that's not an option, I'll have to stick with 4 stars.
Great Tool.......2005-06-21
I don't use Excel all the time. But when I do I don't have time to troubleshoot problems.
This hands-on, user friendly book has helped me conquer Excel. The text is readable and well organized. The visuals are clean and fully support the instructions.
I found that you can start from the beginning and teach yourself EXCEL with simple step by step instructions or you can flip straight to your topic of interest and further build your skills. This is a great tool for all levels of expertise.
Review From A Psychology Student.......2005-05-17
I'm a soon-to-be-graduating Psychology student at the University of Washington and I am writing this review from the perspective of some one using excel in Social Sciences.
I found this book extremely suited to my needs...each step was very clear and precise and it was easy to find the chapter or section that was most applicable to what I was working on.
It covered all of the functions of Excel that I have used in my classes thus far. Although my intro. classes had a very brief introduction to the functions I needed, as I progressed into higher level classes and used more and more Excel I found that I needed additional specific instructions for my work. This book was very helpful in that way, and saved me the bother of forever emailing questions to my professor, as I had done before I received the book.
I actually used Excel the most to analyze the significance of data from an experiment that I had designed and to graph the results. This required quite a few steps and it was helpful to have a guide to look at as I went as opposed to trying to guess what came after the basic skills I had previously learned.
I also lent this book to a friend who works in American Ethnic Studies and used Excel to organize and make tables of data for her thesis. The American Ethnic Studies major has no background in science, so was in the position of having absolutely zero knowledge of Excel. However, with this book alone, she was able to complete the Excel portion of there thesis without any additional help.
From a student's point of view, this is a great resource if your field involves any use of Excel.
Great quick reference.......2005-02-02
I am an infrequent Excel user, so I needed a good reference book that is well indexed. That's exactly what I got with Excel 2003 QuickSteps. It's easy to find what I need when I want it. It's very well illustrated and contains a lot of great tips. The author does an excellent job of explaining the material.
Great for my users.......2004-09-09
I manage a medium-sized network and support a large number of fairly savvy users. That is, most users know how to do their specific tasks very well and are willing to learn new things. But they are not willing to sit down with a book full of dense text. This is where the "Quick Steps" books come in handy. I keep a number of these books on hand and when a user requests assistance, I give them one of the books with the appropriate page bookmarked. Steps are outlined in full color with lots of pictures and pointers and tips. Additional information is set off in side boxes so users can learn more if they choose. What I have found is that once a user completes a task successfully, they get fairly excited about the experience and browse the book to learn more. The books really stimulate users to experiment with things they would not normally bother to learn. And that is where this book excels. It is a "browser." Users don't feel like they need to start at the beginning and read through to the end. I get lots of grumbles when I ask for the book back so I can pass it on to others.
This book is also great for new users. I tell them to spend a few hours working through the steps, which are easy to follow and can be done at a fairly fast pace. Most users think the full color layout is fun to work through. The down-side is that like any book, space is limited, especially with the fully-illustrated format, so you're obviously not going to find everything in these books, but I do feel they contain a good balance of material and are appropriate for corporate libraries.
Marty (the concept author for the Quick Steps series) and I are fellow writers and that is how I learned about these books. I must say that they have helped my users enormously and relieved my support task. Hey, it's the 21st century. Anyone working in an office should know how to work with operating systems and common applications. Most people can do that if they have easily accessible references and refresher material like these books. Thanks to Marty for developing the "Quick Steps" concept and to McGraw-Hill for publishing this series.
