Book Description
Daniel Clark demonstrates the dramatic impact unionization made on the lives of textile workers in Henderson, North Carolina, in the decade after World War II. Focusing on the Harriet and Henderson Cotton Mills, he shows that workers valued the Textile Workers Union of America for more than the higher wages and improved benefits it secured for them. Specifically, Clark points to the importance members placed on union-instituted grievance and arbitration procedures, which most labor historians have seen as impediments rather than improvements.
From the signing of contracts in 1943 until a devastating strike fifteen years later, the union gave local workers the tools they needed to secure at least some measure of workplace autonomy and respect from their employer. Union-instituted grievance procedures were not without flaws, says Clark, but they were the linchpin of these efforts. When arbitration and grievance agreements collapsed in 1958, the result was the strike that ultimately broke the union. Based on complete access to company archives and transcripts of grievance hearings, this case study recasts our understanding of labor-management relations in the postwar South.

On a Peaceful Spring Morning, Disaster Strikes San Francisco. On the early morning of April 19, 1906, the city of San Francisco was struck by a devastating earthquake that crumpled buildings, cracked water mains, broke gas pipes, and sent kerosene lamps flying. Fires quickly engulfed most of the city, leaving exhausted civilians to fight the flames with well water, sewer water, and old rags. Despite valiant rescue efforts, estimates place the death toll at around 3,000.

A picturebook coverage of one of the most famous disasters.......2005-04-12
The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 usually is written up for older audiences, so it's nice to see a picturebook coverage of one of the most famous disasters in American history, for kids in grades 2-4. In Earthquake! , all of the color drawings and black and white photos provide eye-catching detail of the events.

A Nearly Perfect Book.......2002-08-26
"The Wreck of the Andrea Gail" is factual, tightly constructed, and roars to a tragic conclusion like the earlier Melville classic (although this book is considerably shorter, which I found congenial). The narrative is clearer than the over-rated recent movie. Altogether, a good read. I would like to see more from this author. Her bio says she is an experienced sailor but an unsuccessful fisher. One senses that the details of sailing down-wind and "foundering" are slightly beyond her grasp as she describes the strategies employed by the Andrea Gail on page 28. Still, this is a small flaw in a far broader tapestry. Bravo! Shiver me timbers! Steady as she goes!

Ribald, yet intelligent jokes.......2004-11-12
If you like modestly dirty jokes, then this is the book for you. Many of them are puns and most are meant to be interpreted as a ribald joke. On page 19, there is the joke:
When I travel on an airplane, I love to be served TWA milk and TWA coffee. But I love to be served TWA tea.
And on page 59, you find
It's Operation Desert Storm and one of the donkeys used to carry supplies keels over, dies and starts to swell up and stink. Three GIs are assigned the job of burying the beast, and right in the middle of digging, Barbara Walters comes by with a news crew and asks for an interview. "What are you digging there, men", she asks, "a foxhole?" "That's what it is! Absolutely!', they all shout.
It took me a second to get each one, but once I did, I found them hilarious. As is the case with any book with hundreds of jokes, no one will find all of them to be funny.
The author has been elected punster of the year and has won several jokester contests. From the quality of the jokes in this book, you can see why. Most of them are funny, although the point is not always obvious. However, that is what makes them better and funnier, as you get the intellectual pleasure of thinking through to the punch line and the joy of laughing at the joke.
Wonderful.......1999-04-18
This is a very hilarious book
MUST GIVE IT A MIXED REVIEW.......1999-01-22
There is a lot of stuff in this book... some fun, little funny, and a lot that's dumb. If the book was intended just as a historical collection of the clever and corny, it succeeded, but if every entry was meant to entertain, it fell short. I do not regret the purchase and recommend it... just don't expect to do a lot of laughing (but you'll chuckle from time to time.)
Book Description
"George," he said, "I don't know if you'd be interested, but there's a chap who's come in with a tape of a group he runs. They haven't got a recording contract, and I wonder if you'd like to see him and listen to what he's got?""Certainly," I said, "I'm willing to listen to anything. Ask him to come and see me." "O.K., I will. His name's Brian Epstein...."All You Need Is Ears is the story of George Martin, the man who spotted the Beatles' talent, who recorded and produced them from the start, and who brought their musical ideas to life. In this witty and charming autobiography, he describes exactly what it was like to work in the studio with the Beatles--from the first audition (and his decision to scrap Pete Best on drums) to the wild experimentation of Sgt. Pepper (complete with sound effects, animal noises and full orchestras in evening dress at the direct request of Paul McCartney). This is a singular look at the most important musical group of all time, and how they made the music that changed the world: No other book can provide George Martin's inside look at their creative process, at the play of genius and practical improvisation that gave them their sound; it is an indispensable read for Beatle lovers and anyone interested in the music world.
Customer Reviews:
Posted Bio.......2007-04-04
Just to point out --
The biography posted is for George Martin, the sci-fi writer,
who isn't the same person (as far as I know!) as the Beatles'
producer. FYI.
A good book that should have been great.......2007-03-05
George Martin was the 5th Beatle. He gave them their first break after they had been turned down by all the labels. Without the break he gave them, Martin muses that the Beatles may have just given it up and gone their separate ways. Apparently George Martin was the only one around that was willing to take a chance on these scruffs from Liverpool that would chane the world.
It seems that Paul was the one Beatle that could have made it on his own, but if not as on of The Beatles, then as what? Could he have been a backup for Tony Sheridan, or a bass player for Little Richard? Thankfully, we will never know. Would the other Beatles have likely gotten working class jobs, and/or just self-destructed? As always, the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.
It is hard to imagine a world without the Beatles, but that just underscores the importance of George Martin in giving them their lucky break. George Martin played all positions with the Beatles, except for vocalist. He produced, directed, arranged, and even played piano and harpsichord on many records. He brought that classical influence of strings and horns into the Beatles music, starting with Yesterday. Any die-hard fan will want to read this book, however, beware: it is diluted a bit with stories about other recording artists that have little relation to the reason why I bought the book in the first place, i.e., The Beatles. Nevertheless, it does have a few anecdotes that have not been seen elsewhere, so yes, it is worth buying and reading. You can always skip the parts that you don't care about.
George Martin is very informative on the evolution of multitrack recording technology, so that should be of interest to anybody that wonders how they got all those "layer cakes" out of the primitive equipment of the day.
I enjoyed the book immensely, but I think George Martin could have done better given his intimate knowledge of one of the greatest cultural phenomena of all time. Sometimes he seems a little aloof in the book, as if he hardly cares, but it is probably just old-school English understatement at its best, or maybe a futile attempt to downplay that he is probably their biggest fan, if not one of their oldest.
On a side note, it is too bad that George Martin was never rewarded financially (at least up to 1979 when this book was published) on a level that would have been commensurate with the important role he played in not only discovering, but also developing the greatest band of all time. As always, the Beatles come off as cheap, uncharitable and self-indulgent on this score. As the book explains, Martin was offered some royalties under the table, (as a kickback from an unscrupulous publisher) but he never compromised his ethics. Eventually I'm sure he made a nice living through his long association with the Fab 4, but not what one might expect, according to the book, at least up to 1979. A lot has happened in the financial world of The Beatles since this book was written, including the huge Vegas production of Love, in which Martin played an integral role along with his son, Giles. It's nice to see a music producer that is more driven by quality and innovation than the lowest common demoniators. I wish we had more like him.
My rating says 3 stars, but that was a mistake. I really gave it a 4.
Beatles.......2007-01-18
A must read for anyone involved in the making of music as it pertains to production and recording. It however exhibits George Martins conservative nature and is someone bias from his perspective. A much superior book is Here,There, and Everywhere by Geoff Emerick. It is the same subject matter but much more detailed and objective.
Okay but not all that I wanted.......2007-01-05
I wish there were more technical specifics in the descriptions of various sessions. Sir George gets you into Abbey Road studio #2 and lets you know about his experiences with various artists.
George Martin REVEALED!.......2006-09-03
This is a truly amazing book. I had just finished reading "Here, There and Everywhere" by Geoff Emerick (the Beatles recording engineer) and decided I wanted to know more about George Martin, their producer. It was a great decision because the introspect gained from reading both of these books together tells a big picture that I before could only guess at.
George's personality really comes out in this book and it makes it far easier to understand what went on during the Beatles many many recording sessions. It has been said that the producer is a major contributer to the outcome of any project and this book definately confirms and educates about that process.
It is an easy read and the edition that I purchased has fairly decent sized type and makes it easy on the eyes. It is a paperback and tucks easily into your daybag or briefcase for those times when you can read a few minutes - but if you are like I am - you may devour the whole thing in one seating!
The early life of George Martin is also detailed in this book with it's different perspective of growing up in Britain. I had no idea that George Martin was in pop music groups as he was growing up and that came as a terrific surprise. I might have known, though.
The classical side of George Martin comes out strong also. This came into very significant play as he produced the Beatles.
Great book. Don't hesitate to buy this!
Book Description
"Race relations" are a controversial topic in today's Germany. Have Germans learned from the past? How far back must one go to understand the tensions, prejudices, and strategies that have marked race relations in the recently unified nation? The Imperialist Imagination explores the German preoccupation with racial and ethnic differences throughout the past two centuries, in a colonial and "postcolonial" context.
Germany's belated national unification in 1870, its short colonial period (1884-1918), and the loss of its colonies as a consequence of World War I, rather than through wars of liberation, generated very different colonial and postcolonial conditions from those in Britain and France. This volume's sixteen essays investigate how, as a consequence of these conditions, Germans imagined their relationship to racial and ethnic others: how they supported and contested colonization during the colonial period, how their colonial fantasies fed into the Nazis' racial and expansionary policies after the loss of German colonies, and how they represent their relationship to German minorities and "foreigners" within and outside Germany today.
The contributors include scholars in literature, history, art history, political science, philosophy, ethnography, film, popular culture, photography, and theater. The anthology will appeal not only to Germanists but to all those interested in postcolonial and cultural studies.
Sara Friedrichsmeyer is Professor of German, University of Cincinnati. Sara Lennox is Professor of German, University of Massachusetts. Susanne Zantop is Professor of German and Comparative Literature, Dartmouth College.

Not Ultimate, But a LOT of Fun!.......2000-02-10
the Ultimate Yo-Yo Book by Larry Sayco isn't really "ultimate" but it is a very good read and a lot more fun than you'd initially think. Written for a young audience, it actually is of tremendous use for any yo-er who expects to ever perform in public.
It includes many of the standard tricks you're used to seeing everywhere else - but described in new ways. Bowling, you might have heard of. But "Tumbling Tower"? "Statue of Liberty"? And you should see the audiences react!
Two "coolness" factors: the cover is a sorta adaption of the way-cool cover to the One & Only Yo-Yo Book from last decade. And extra points go to Larry for including troubleshooting tips for his tricks! That, folks, is cool.
What Larry has put together here is a terrific "script" for an act, which requires - NOT the "best" yo-yo skill in the world, but persistence and practice. And studying this book. (review from BANDALORE reprinted by permission)
An excellent book of basic yo-yo tricks........1999-06-01
This book sticks just to the tricks which is nice. The trouble tips sections included for most of the tricks is a unique addition and very helpful for the novice. This is an excellent basic yo-yo trick book, but advanced players should check out the Yonomicon. Lucky Meisenheimer M.D. author of "Lucky's Collectors Guide to 20th Century Yo-Yos...History and Values.
This was a very great book........1999-01-31
Now this book was truley da bomb. My brother ordered it and it had so many tricks and tips in it. I am not really into yo-yos but now that I have read this book I really and starting to like them. Trust me but if you have a sister or brother at home and they like yo-yos then get them this book they will love it. Another thing I noticed about the book is it was really easy to follow. Even my little brother can follow this that is how east this book is to follow. Sorry to write follow all the time but it really is so easy to read. Bye Bye
greatest yo-yo tricks ever.......1998-12-09

Customer Reviews:
Nothing in here you can't get for free.......2005-12-21
First off, if you don't want to have the ending to the game ruined, stop reading these reviews because J. Boden ruins it for everyone. Also, don't buy the Prima Guide because there are spoilers in there as well. I made the mistake of getting this book when I was half-way through the game thinking it would help me, but I've pretty much figured everything out already on my own. The game Half-Life 2 is built around gently guiding you in the direction it wants you to go. The only purpose this book would serve is if you are absolutely stuck on a level and can't figure out what to do or where to go, then you could consult this guide for tips. But that hasn't happened for me yet and I'm playing on Normal difficulty. The weapons list and enemies list in this book for better or for worse has been copied on the Internet many times, so you can do a quick Google search and find most of the tips for free. This book only taught me one useful thing I couldn't figure out on my own: the machine gun has a grenade launcher (I forgot about the secondary fire option on most weapons). That's about it. I could see this book being useful for people having trouble completing a level, people who really like the colorful maps, or people who want to know what's going to happen ahead of time. If you're already into the game and don't need help, there isn't much here.
Need all the help I can get !!.......2005-10-10
Rate it a 4 out of 5 cause never have time to use it.To busy workin to pay for all my PC addictions not to mention gas...!!I also have one for DOOM3 and am pleased with it and found GOD mode alot of help for this overaged wanabe gamer... Weekend warrior W/half a deck..
Jej, s^m st^f.......2004-12-22
Yeah, it's been established that we have two different types of gamers: those who are appalled by those who use strategy guides, and those who think it's fun to check out extra stuff after playing the game. Whatever. Anyway, I'm a little sceptical on the thoroughness of this thing, because I noticed that it doesn't cover every G-Man appearance; and after I found one not listed, I noticed that unlisted sightings are all over the Steam forums. Hm, dubiety.
If you have Half Life 2, you should have this guide.......2004-11-25
This is a great guide. It is over 300 pages thick with detailed information about every location. It covers Half Life 2 as well as Counter Strike - Source. The entire guide is in full color and printed on heavy paper.
In addition to explaining gameplay details, the guide also covers some basic information that would normally be in a manual. Since HL2 does not come with a manual, this is very nice. It is not something I would normally expect from a strategy guide, but I appreciate that they went the extra mile there.
This is also the kind of game that makes a strategy guide important. HL2 is not a mindless shooter, so you are likely to get stuck at some point. This guide is a great tool and will help you out when you need it.
Note that this guide is not the same is the "Official Hint Book" that ships with the collector's edition. In fact, the booklet that ships with the collector's edition is really just an advertisement for this book. Get the real thing and ignore the collector's edition.
Excellent guide!.......2004-11-24
First let me say that the HL2 Guide does have tons of spoilers in it. So if you really want to be surprised don't look at it until you get stuck. But having said that it is a great guide. Also it is in glorious full color.
The HL2 Guide is broken into five sections:
First is an overview of all the weapons in the game. Full color illustartions and good info.
The second is an overview of all the characters you will encounter. Again, full color illustrations and good info.
The third section is the real meat of the book and contains the walkthroughs of each mission. What makes this section so nice is that a great map of the level is provided, which is better than the ones they did for Doom3, and full color screen shots that take you step by step through each mission. In addition, great tips and other goodies are highlighted for each level. If you get stuck on a level this is the place to look. Also, it is a great read AFTER you finish a level to pick up some tips and maybe see a few things you might have missed. It also narrates the story so you can actually read through this section almost like a book.
The fourth section of the guide covers Counter-Strike.
Lastly the book includes all the cheat codes you could ever want.
Overall it is a very well done guide that will help you through a few tricky levels and has excellent production values.
