4 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Interviews.......2003-04-13

This short, concise book describes types of interviews, how to prepare for them, the stages of interviews, how to follow up, and how to handle job offers. The recommendations apply to competitive interviews where the employer is hiring for a known vacancy. The print is large and there is a lot of white space.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!! Very Helpful!.......1998-05-31

This is an excellent guide with the helpful hints for the most frequently asked questions. My interviewer asked me at least half of the questions covered in the book. It also gives 2 scenarios and explains what the person did good and bad in each. It really put me at ease. Great for anyone just starting the interviewing process.

          Book Description

The post-war period is often regarded as a time when Britain underwent its managerial revolution, the family firm and the "gentleman amateur" giving way to the large bureaucracy and the trained management expert. Yet the conception of modern management as an objective process could hardly be further from the truth. Drawing on detailed life-history interviews with the post-war generation of "organization men", this study explores the intimacies that operate among men in management. It argues that despite the rise of professional management, relations between managers continue to function in highly subjective ways. The pleasure of technical innovation or of seeing a new product through to the market, the mixture of rivalry and patronage that surrounds management succession, the hard bargaining of industrial relations: at every level, managerial functions involve the dramatization of emotions among men. By challenging the enduring myth of the rational organization man, this book sheds new light on gender segregation in management. It argues that the exclusion of women from senior positions cannot be understood simply as the outcome of unprofessional practices. A focus on the emotional relations between male managers reveals the psychic dimensions of exclusionary behaviour. An "emotional economy" flourishes among men in management, but its workings have been hidden by the myth of the rational organization man.

          Book Description

As heard on This American Life and NPR's All Things Considered, Brett Leveridge spins mostly true tales of small-town Lotharios and big-city dreams in a voice that is simultaneously hip and homespun--and utterly his own.

There's something universal in these tales of the dating life, peopled with well-intentioned boys next door, two-timing playboys, and traveling roustabouts with a girl in every town. You'll meet the fellow behind Mom's first arrest; get the unexpurgated truth about winking Bob Wills, the King of Western Swing; and learn why a young woman would consent to see The Eddie Cantor Story six times in two weeks--with six different men. Leveridge holds forth on many other topics as well, offering his decidedly contrarian views on major holidays, hilarious skewerings of television ads, and a bittersweet account of the life of a straight man often presumed to be gay.

Like the best of our current essayists--Roy Blount, Jr., David Sedaris, Sandra Tsing Loh--Leveridge is at once forward-thinking and nostalgic. With his enormously appealing voice and happy knack for taking a commonplace topic and veering off into uncharted territory, Leveridge is, as one scribe put it, "Will Rogers meets Garrison Keillor meets Jack Kerouac."

Men My Mother Dated and Other Mostly True Tales collects the best of Leveridge's work from his award-winning website, BRETTnews, and his long-running Might magazine column; it also boasts ten brand-new, never-before-published installments of Mom's romantic adventures, plus other assorted surprises.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Believe the hype!.......2001-02-10

Although most of the book (and the reviews) focus on the marvelous youthful adventures of Brett Leveridge's lovely mother, my favorite part of the book were Brett's personal essays. His observational stories add warmth to a genre that is very often overly sarcastic and bitter.

5 out of 5 stars 'Mother': Skirmishes After the Vote, but Before the Pill.......2000-06-27

Brett Leveridge offers a generous portrait of the delights and dangers of dating, as seen through the wise (but not hard-bitten) eyes of a young woman in the 50's. The fact that this woman is his mother does not distract from his candid appraisals of the motives of men and women during their movie-going, dance-attending searches for companionship.

He creates a remarkable movie in one's head, full of Beat poets, seducing at dawn; confident sons of preachers (whose version of 'going fast' involves way more than the moves of 'third base'); rough men, humbled by her beauty; shy men, sometimes encouraged too far.

All these experiences tie in to Karen's ('Mother's') subtle construction of her dream man; the fidelity and kindness she shows to others during her dates become building blocks for the long-lasting fidelity of her only marriage.

Leveridge's view of human nature in his Mother stories (and in his short essays) is tasteful and respectful, but not conservatively retrograde. Men who might have kept a stash of physique magazines and women who might have had their secret love in the WACS also have their role (an appropriate one, neither cruel nor cold) in this girl's journey to womanhood and marriage.

This is the rare post-modern book that one could safely give to Mom or Dad, while feeling guilty about wanting to keep it for oneself. Play it safe -- buy two.

5 out of 5 stars You can judge a book by its cover!.......2000-06-25

Okay, I have to admit that the only reason I picked up this book in the first place is because of all the handsome men on the cover. When I finally got around to reading it, I couldn't put it down!

It's a very amusing, quick read. All I can say is that I wish my social life was half as active and entertaining as Mrs. Leveridge's!

Wow, did she really share a sunrise with Jack Kerouac?

5 out of 5 stars Such a Nice Young Man!.......2000-06-22

Brett Leveridge is a terrifically funny writer; his prose is at once witty and engaging, the tales he spins warmly evocative and unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars A Slice of an American Life.......2000-05-28

I picked up Brett Leveridge's new book Men My Mother Dated and thought to myself, "Now who would want to read a book filled with stories about the men someone's mother dated?"

The answer is pretty evident once you begin reading these humorous and wonderfully written stories. It got me to thinking just what types of guys my own mom must have dated and of the different stories all of our mothers could tell regarding the finer points of dating.

My favorite story had to be The Eddie Cantor Six in which Brett recounts the tale of his mother having dated six men who, over the course of two weeks, all took her to see The Eddie Cantor Story at a local movie theater.

The rest of the stories or commentaries, if you will, are just as well written and some are laugh-out-loud hysterical! You simply cannot go wrong with this slim volume of essays by a man with a truly observant eye toward our current state of social affairs. You'll pick it up and won't want to put it down!

Oh...and be sure to check out Brett's Website BRETTnews wherein you will have the opportunity to sign his Guest Book and be asked that all-important question - What Is Your Inseam.

5 out of 5 stars Review of reviews.......2007-04-12

...very curious set of reviews of this book. The unschooled, uneducated, and inexperienced (not to mention the illiterate) give the book low marks. The more highly experienced and more intensively tutored give it high marks. The style of the various reviews speaks more clearly than their substance. Again and again, reviewers carp because the author did not say what they wanted him to say. Gag! Don't gripe because Miller didn't write the book that you want written, for goodness sake! Read the book for what it IS, not for what you WANT it to be.

            5 out of 5 stars Pedagogue's Guide.......2006-11-10

If you are a teacher of voice, you need to have this book in your library. Students enrolled in vocal pedagogy should have this listed as required reading. It was an asset in my voice exams. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars for the voice teacher or very serious voice students.......2006-11-04

The book has a lot of information on different aspects in learning to sing. It also contains a lot of drawings, charts and useful vocal exercises for development of different techniques. However, it does use a lot of technical terms that is not common in everyday language, and the writer is very detailed. So you'd need a lot of concentration in reading it. It's a useful book for voice teachers. As for students, it will be a good source of reference, but singing should not be learned only from a book. One would benefit much more with the guidance from a good teacher.

5 out of 5 stars The Structure of Singing.......2006-02-23

I purchased this book as a textbook for a course in vocal pedagogy that I am enrolled in. I have found this book to be very useful, not just for those who want to teach voice, but also for students of voice, and for anyone who is generally interested in how the vocal mechanism functions. This book is full of useful information on the functions of breath support, muscle groups that aid in the singing process, and resonance balance, and has many useful diagrams as well. It also contains many exercises that aid in vocal agility, vowel differentiation and sostenuto. This book would be a valuable part of the voice teacher's collection.

              Product Description

For the beginning or intermediate student, in class or individual study, this book provides a fresh and thorough introduction to vocal technique and repertoire relevant to today's student. Its anthology contains 15 folk songs, 15 art songs, and 15 songs from the musical theatre. Illustrations and a glossary accompany the text, which features chapter discussions on practicing, vocalizing, breathing, learning a song, the theatrics of singing, and music reading. It includes detailed information on the anatomy of the larynx and the musculature of the throat, and is also a good introduction to the acoustics of the voice, vowel differentiation, formants etc. Mr. Miller's approach is indeed 'systematic', as claimed, and there are a number of exercises for the development of each area of vocal technique.

                Book Description

From the perspective of the 1990s, it is possible to see the road to the Bonn Republic and West Germany's "social market economy" as the "correct" postwar German path. But unified Germany continues to confront enormous problems of social inequality and widespread resistance to the acceptance of a truly multi-cultural society. By exploring how West Germans confronted--or failed to confront--similar problems in the early history of the Federal Republic, this collection makes a crucial contribution to understanding the present.
Moving beyond accounts of high politics and international relations, the essays brought together here focus on the intersections between the politics of daily life and the politics of the nation-state. Building on the approaches of women's history, social history, and cultural studies, they emphasize that the process of defining West Germany in the 1950s took place not only in the geopolitical arena of the Cold War but also in dance halls and at the movies, in worker-training programs, and in patterns of consumption.
West Germany under Construction not only expands our understanding of the early formation of West German society, it also outlines ways to continue the excavation of that past. It will be mandatory reading for students and scholars alike.

4 out of 5 stars Good Fun Questions but not real difficult.......2004-04-22

I am enjoying doing this book, but I would have prefered more difficult question. The real joy of this book is the size of the puzzles and questions, not tiny and not huge.
                Great fun.

1 out of 5 stars How do I do everything with my Pocket Pc?.......2005-09-10

Many words - few practical tips! This book did not give much more (-valuable-) information than I already had found out by reading the manual delivered with my pocket computer.
After reading the book I still had to search for web communities, where some of my questions could be answered.
My expectations when buying the book were mainly focused on the need for practical hints concerning how to manage tasks, contacts and appointments. Unfortunately, in my view, these important and basic issues were treated too superficially.

                1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2004-06-09

This is a good book for those who know how to use a PDA and are experts at reading and writing code. It is not for beginners or those who have never seen Win CE. But if you love computers and techie gadgets, are good with code and like to play with electronic toys, are looking for another techie's love of toys, then you might get something out of it. But if you are inclined in that way you already know this stuff. Don't waste your money. There are other books that do a better job in both areas

5 out of 5 stars Do More With Your PocketPC.......2004-05-21

This book is great! Whether you're a novice or seasoned veteran with PocketPCs, this is the book to get. It can be read chapter by chapter or used as a reference manual. If you just bought a PocketPC and you're confused with the little or no information from the manufacturer, get this book. The author takes you through some of the more intimidating set-up procedures in an easy step-by-step order to get your handheld up and running. Each aspect of the programs- Word, Excel, and Outlook - is covered in a clear-cut, understandable manner. Accessory programs that can be added are also covered if you want to extend the functionality of your device. I bought 2 other books on the PocketPC; I found this one the most informative.

4 out of 5 stars Fun book for the PocketPC enthusiast.......2003-12-08

This is a really fun book to read. It is designed to help PocketPC users understand just what they can do with their really expensive toy. While it's probably not a good book for techies, since they will probably be able to figure out everything they're PocketPC can do pretty quickly anyway, it is good for everyone else.

The book starts out pretty much how you would expect it: with a section on how to synch your PocketPC and other introductory steps. Once you've got it synched, there is a discussion on personalization features of the PocketPC. The book then goes through each of the types of things you can do with a PocketPC: make contacts and manage appointments, use PocketPC versions of Excel and Word, call someone on the phone (if you're lucky enough to have the PocketPC Phone Edition), take notes, access multimedia content, use mapping software, and even instant message.

While I enjoyed the book and found much of the information informative, I was also disapointed that it's focus is on the 3100,3600,3700,3800 series and the MicroSoft CE 2002 operating system. The 3870 is the latest model referenced and it was released 11/15/2001, almost two years ago. Alot of changes have happened and this book is not current.

I have just been introduced to the iPAQ world with a 5555 and MS CE 2003. Most of the CE 2003 Operating System is the same (in appearence) as CE 2003. After reading the HP users manual, which I found sparce, I purchased this book partly for configuration information of WiFi email (which is a major bullet on the cover) and troubleshooting.

I found the book's information on configuration of WiFi email to be basic, almost the same at the HP manual, and there was little information to deal with setup problems that do arise. There are only 2 pages devoted out of 365 that deal with troubleshooting...
