Great Book!.......2004-10-17
The Newark Teacher Strike was an exhilarating book and it actually made me feel the
emotions that the teachers were going through. It astonished me to see that over 200
people were imprisoned due to this strike; although after reading further other actions
were more astounding. This book should be read by every teacher and soon-to-be
teacher to truly understand the command these teachers took upon themselves.
This book portrays the struggles of the teachers not only against the Board of
Education, but also against one another. There are powerful excerpts pertaining to
equality and differences. There is a lot to learn from this book, and some parts I found
so interesting that I actually read them again to make sure I was taking everything in.
This book transcends the ultimate message that no matter how difficult something may
be you should stand up for what you believe in.
First-hand accounts of the Newark Teachers Strikes retold.......2004-10-14
Steve Golin takes great care as a historian to report the perspectives of the teachers who went on strike in 1970 and 1971 in his narrative "The Newark Teacher Strikes: Hopes on the Line." Emergent is the fact that what started the strikes is not what ended them and what teachers had begun fighting together for ended in their battling against each other because of their differences.
The first strike was almost inspiring. Teachers of different backgrounds banded together under the brotherhood of the union and fought for its say in decision making for schools. In his reporting, Golin uncovers the underpinnings of the teacher's tensions by the time of the second strike, which ended in nearly two hundred people arrested or placed in jail. Black, Jewish and Italian teachers were all seeking betterment for themselves and/or the quality of education, however, they grew to feel differently about the union. The ubiquitous issues of race, gender and class snuck up on the strikers. The equality of men and women as professionals in the workplace became a contributing factor to the increased tensions between teachers. Adding insult to injury were the pay differences between elementary and secondary teachers. Race, however, was one of the most powerful and destructive factors affecting the second strike. Golin also retells accounts of those sentenced to jail after the second strike and how their experience has changed their lives.
For the novice urban school teacher this book is an invaluable reality check revealing the extent to which our predecessors were willing to go to fighting for what they believe in. It made me question to what extent I would fight for what I believe in, should I be called upon to do so.
The Newark Teacher Strikes.......2004-10-14
Steve Golin's The Newark Teacher Strikes is a thought provoking book which allows people from all walks of American life to get into the minds of the men and women who shaped the evolution of Newark Teacher's Union through the strikes that occurred. This book was not only about the efforts of Newark teachers trying to improve the educational system, but about teachers, men and women, "Blacks," Jews, and Italians alike, developing their own self identity and self importance in their career as educators in the public school system. Teachers tried to identify themselves as professionals yet were asked to join a Union which was typically organizations for non-professional.
The book also focuses on teachers in Newark in the midst of civil rights movements while trying to better the educational system for America's youth. In some cases, the changes the NTU desired were tied to the civil rights movement. Newark was a great example of how teacher unions developed during these times. The "Black" population grew from 11 percent in 1940 to 54 percent in 1970. Minority teachers were fighting for a place in society and for power and representation in governing, while at the same time working to improve education.
The concept of isolation is also addressed in this book: "Probably the worst thing in any strike is for the strikers to feel isolated." One of the biggest benefits of being part of a Union is the easing of the mind that a person is not alone in their feelings and thoughts. People can feed off each other's energy. People can listen to each other's stories and realize that they are not so different. Unions also validate the feelings and concerns in the minds of people.
Golin's approach to understanding the psychological aspect of people involved in the Union development in Newark was successful. Throughout the reading I found myself pondering the thoughts of the individuals who were brave enough in uncertain times to stand up for the principles of their convictions. Their thoughts and perspectives enlightened me. It made me prouder to be in education and realize that our work as educators is not yet done. Furthermore, I have concluded that our work does not have to take place just in our classrooms, but efforts outside the classroom in non-curricula arenas.

Review.......2004-10-14
Steve Gotlin's book, "The Newark Teacher Strikes, Hopes on the Line" explores the avenues and dilemmas placed on teachers within an urban school system. Fifty enticing and emotionally twisting teacher interviews touch all aspects of society. These enlightening dialogues pave the way for insights into the inner emotions and characteristics that create and symbolize a "teacher". The author delves into the many conflicts that arise between teachers and administration compounded by race, gender, class differences and other human characteristics that are prevalent within the once school district. Gotlin explores the feelings that churn up among educators during strikes and actions not only about higher wages or improved education for the students but also an instructors' concern for a say in the decision-making process. In the midst of two weeks of strikes, during 1970 and 1971, the Newark school system completely shut down and the consequences that filtered down to the children. Explore how all these quandaries were overcome within this astonishing book. With encapsulating scenarios and emotions running wild, I highly recommend this wonderful book to any person, teacher or non-teacher, to understand what teachers strive to accomplish everyday in school.
Brillliant book on educational reform.......2004-10-14
Steve Golin's "The Newark Teacher Strikes: Hopes on the Line" is an enthralling account of a paralyzing situation that landed close to two hundred teachers in jail. This book reveals the great effort of a Union trying to better the educational system in Newark, New Jersey in the early seventies. The author touches on issues that go deeper than politics, and teachers against administrators. He illuminates the great characteristics that the members of the Newark Teachers Union possessed. Golin uses interviews from over fifty teachers to capture the true reasoning behind the strikes - fighting for the rights of both teachers and students. The book reveals the humanity of the teachers in Newark. Struggling with an unfair monetary advantage for the teachers at the secondary level, those teachers fight to relinquish raises in order to equalize the pay scale for teachers at all levels. The ties that bind are delivered in an incredible account of an unwillingness to concede. I recommend this book to all who are in or interested in the education field as well as anyone who wants to learn about real life struggles and the uphill battles that the teachers in Newark would not give in to.

A Laugh-Out-Loud All Around Good Book .......2005-03-13
I acually have a pretty interesting story about how I came across the book "Dear Tabby". It was a few years ago, and me and my friend Tabby were at the library. Tabby's real name is Tabitha, but everyone calls her Tabby. So me and Tabby were on the web cat catolog (how you search for books in the library on the computer) and Tabby decided we should both type in our names, and see if there were any books with our names in the titles. So Tabby typed in her name, and to our suprise, the book title "Dear Tabby" came up, and it turned out the book was in our library. So of course we found it, and Tabby and I absolutley fell in love with this hilarious, witty, and creative book. So, each and every day we came to the library, we checked it out and read it. We shared some of the funny letters to our friends, and they were totally cracking up too. Tabby and I read it together at least three times, memorizing it. The creativity of Leigh Rutledge is outstanding! Each letter tells about real issues that cats have, and it's interesting for cat owners to think, "Does my cat feel this way?" And some of Tabby responses even relate to overcoming troubles we as humans might have. Though Tabby and I haven't read "Dear Tabby" in a long time, we still remember it, and still laugh about it. We laughed so hard back in the library, the librarian shushed us a few times. "Dear Tabby" will make everyone laugh, and it is an awesome book both Tabby and I won't forget in a hurry.
A fun and witty treat for any cat lover!.......2004-05-02
"Dear Tabby" is a delightful collection of letters written to a fictional feline advice columnist. The "readers" ask about everything from romance, to the raising of kittens, to dealing with humans, and even the meaning of life. Occasionally a human or even a dog will write in with a question. Tabby's witty replies are sure to make you smile. Some of the advice can even be applied to our own human lives. The questions and responses are best read in order, as sometimes (just as with real advice columns) a letter refers to a previous letter from another reader. This is a very fun little book that would make a great present for yourself or a cat-loving friend. Here's a small sampling of what you can expect:
"Dear Tabby,
The humans I live with refuse to keep my litter boxes clean. Every time I try to use them, they're a mess. They certainly don't expect ME to clean them, do they?
- Exasperated in Exeter"
"Dear Exasperated,
You could try scratching the words CLEAN ME in the litter - but you'd just wind up on CNN or in a circus. And you'd probably still have dirty litter boxes. Difficult as it is, just stop using them for a while. Find creative places around the house to use instead. (Underwear drawers often seem made for this very thing.) Your careless humans should get the hint VERY quickly." (pg. 54)
----------
"Dear Tabby,
How many cats would it take, lined up tail to nose, to reach from here to the moon? I don't know why I keep thinking about this question, but I'm trying to get an idea of just how far away places like the moon really are. Thanks.
- Staggered by the Immensity of It All."
"Dear Staggered,
Assuming a distance from the earth to the moon of approximately 235,000 miles, and assuming the average cat is roughly 26 inches in length from the tip of its nose to the end of its tail, it would take nearly 572,692,000 cats laid end to end to reach the moon. It would, of course, take about 300 million more of them if they were all Manxes." (pg. 30)

An extremely well-written method for 20-key, German-style concertina. One of the best books of its kind available. Written in the key of C.
Customer Reviews:
For new concertina players.......2007-05-22
This book is a godsend. There are no teachers in my area and I couldn't figure it out. It explains everything so clearly, I was doing scales in no time. He adds one new thing at a time. I'm about 2/3 of the way through and I'm playing chords! It sounds like real music and everyone has been amazed how fast I've progressed. Thanks again! It's great!
Excellent beginners concertina instruction.......2007-05-12
I bought a 20 button concertina and wanted to learn to play it. I saw some good reviews so decided to buy this book.
I can read music so had no problems, but there is a quick guide to music reading if you are new to it. Each piece of music also has the button number above each note which makes things easier for the beginner.
Music varies between beginners 'standards' like Clementine to easy arrangements from classical music.
I have now played 20 minutes per day for 2 months and I'm ready for the next level and a new book.
Good stuff.......2006-11-10
Exactly what I wanted. I've never played a concertina, just an accordion, and they are set up differently. I didn't know how to begin. This book is simple and straightforward. And it has traditional tunes for my puppet shows. I highly recommend it for beginners
Mel Bay's Deluxe Concertina Book.......2006-07-31
A very good book for the beginning player. I rate it about equal with the Best Concertina Method--yet, by Bob Kail. It would help to have more book-recordings, especially of American folk songs, such as Shenandoah and popular songs like You Are Always in My Heart; slow numbers to get started.
Major errors.......2004-11-30
I was trying to use the fingering chart at the beginning to convert some music to concertina and found errors. For example, it shows left hand 9 push as being both b and c. I've come across a couple of other errors, so I wonder how many there are in the book.

Great for Home School!.......2004-07-17
I recently checked this book out of the library. I liked it so well I decided to get a copy for myself. I home school my children k4 and k5) and I have a TON of craft books. But this is by far the best (geared for age 2 to 6). Lots of different ideas to teach texture, color ect. All simple and most items I have on hand. If you homeschool or just want a book to do with your preschool age children this is an awesome book.
Here is an example:
Bumpy Paint... childs liquid paint, salt, paint brush, smooth finish white paper or paper plate. Mix 1 tablespoon of paint and 1 tablespoon of salt in dish. Mix (should be thick). paint applying some areas thick. Microwave 10 to 30 sec. should have bumby texture when dry.
The book goes into more detail and each idea gives a suply list, what you do, what your child does and what the results should be.
For Home Use.......2001-02-01
This book is good only for very simple arts and crafts. I am a preschool teacher and this book basically does everything that we would do as "free art" and nothing more. If that's what you need help with - art for rainy days, for example - this is the book for you. I needed something more substantial.
Easy to get my kids artsy with stuff around the house!.......1999-06-04
I was instantly impressed with this book, because when I looked through it, all I saw being used for the arts and crafts were things that I have already laying around the house - mainly simple paper and markers. What a treat! Usually you have to make a special trip to the craft store to complete crafts found in other books or magazines, but this book has great ideas (some you wonder why you didn't think of yourself)for using your everyday tools to great effect!

Customer Reviews:
Very nice book by a very nice guy.......2006-11-21
I corresponded with Peter Burian briefly, six or seven years ago, getting advice on photographing my daughter ice skating. He was very nice, and very helpful. That same attitude comes through in this very attractive book. He covers all the important areas: cameras, scanners, software, and printers. This book will give you a solid and accurate understanding of all these areas. It's not going to give you up-to-the-minute details on Nikon and Canons' latest models, or try to convince you about which brand is the best. But if you haven't already made up your mind about one or the other, this book will give you the background to make sensible choices. This book is ideal for someone making their first move to digital, or moving up from snapshooting to something more capable.
A basic guide.......2005-05-16
I must admit that the book title had me fooled. The cover looked stunning and I believed that this would be a book that would, indeed, help one to engage deeply in digital photography.
However, the book turned out to be little more than a basic primer on getting started in digital photgraphy. In fact, it didn't go into sufficient detail on anything and, despite the excellent paper stock and beautiful color photographs, was an extremely disappointing buy.
Good overview, but becoming outdated.......2005-03-24
This book is best suited for people with little understanding of photography who are looking to get started with a digital camera; the first two thirds of the book are largely meant for this audience. However, there is quite a bit in the last third of the book for readers who are moving from film to digital or learning how to use digital editing software. For this more advanced audience, there is even some useful advice on picking a digital camera in the first sections.
Although the core concepts covered in the book should carry forward for sometime, much of the book is becoming outdated (for example there is no discussion of the new Adobe digital negative format as an alternative to compressed TIFF for archiving images, and camera specs are also behind the times). An updated version would be welcome for the intended audiences, and I would most likely rate that book 4 to 5 stars.
Because this book is a broad introductory text, and does not go in-depth into any topic, use of the word "Mastering" in the title, not to mention trademarking this one word, is inappropriate.
misleading title.......2004-11-20
this book is very very basic, most of what is covered ( software current cameras etc.)will be out of date soon. do not expect to learn anything regarding taking better pictures ( shutter speed , mastering the light meter , etc. ). if you have absolutly no idea of how - what or why regarding digital cameras then this book is for you , but if you have any knowledge then pass up on this book
Covered what you want to know about digital photography. .......2004-08-27
I carefully read through the book and found it is a very informative tool that gives the readers a lot of tips and advices.
For readers who like to buy or upgrade digital equipment, there are chapters that listed major considerations and technology differences of equipment categories. For readers who already own digital equipment, the book shows you how to optimize your equipment to get the best result. Readers who like to improve photography would found advices of taking better pictures, and technique of digital darkroom.
The book explained complicate but important concepts in simple language, with deep enough detail. I found the book easy to read and very helpful. I had a lot of "I see" and "Now I know why/how" while I read through the book.
If you are new to photography or moving from film to digital, this is a must-read book for you.

Laying it all out in Black and White.......2007-08-04
Good photography transcends whether the image was captured in full color or black-and-white, and Amadou Diallo recognizes that fact in presenting this excellent guidebook for imaging in monochrome. Virtually everything in this book has applications in color photography as well, whether it's the description of proper calibration to the invaluable tips on tonality. If you aspire to be a better photographer, this book is a good place to start. You'll find that after you've mastered black-and-white image capture and output, you'll be well on the road to mastery of all aspects of good photography. Recommended.
High Quality Black-and-White.......2007-07-28
Extremely useful for any serious photographer interested in printing in high quality black and white.
Amadou's book.......2007-07-09
Very good overview and very timely. The samples of solutions available in the marletplace are up to date for 2007.
Digital B&W shooting and printing reference.......2007-07-04
This book was recommended on internet fora on printers and inkjet printing and they were absolutely right. This is a well written book for photographers who wish to go deep in the world of B&W shooting and inkjet printing.
It is necessary to have a little background in photography and Photoshop, but with this background the book is very informative and thorough. Amadou Diallo has a gift for teaching and he can explain difficult concepts in a simple way.
The information in the book more than covered my needs and has helped me in shooting and printing better B&W images.
Not at all just for Digital Black and White.......2007-06-14
I bought this book because I was interested in better digital black and white workflows. The interesting thing, however, is that all of the book's excellent and clear topics are applicable to the color digital workflow as well.
Well written; easy to understand; and quite comprehensive especially when dealing with arcane issues that I've never seen dealt with in print before such as L* monitor gamma calibration.
Highly recommended!
