4 out of 5 stars A good start in preparation for interview questions.......2006-12-29

I found this book to be very good at basic questions that you may find in an interview. Honestly, I have been asked a few right out of this book. This is a very straight forward, no-nonsense guide to basic interview questions. I did not rate this book higher because there are other preparation guides out there that do a better job when it comes to specific job functions.

Jeffery Allen takes a very straight forward approach when it comes to viewing what a job interview can be. Often these are dull interviews where it is difficult to shine in, and he brings that point home very clearly. He does a good job of coaching you to have good body language, a solid voice delivery, and to think before you answer. It is not likely that an interviewer is going to ask you odd questions like what kind of sea creature would you be, so do not worry about what is unlikely to happen.

He suggests that the is preparation to the standard questions that are asked. Give the facts only, don't elaborate too much. Do not tell your life story, give answers that pertain to the job. If they want to know about you, they want to know what makes you fit towards their job, not that you run marathons. Deflect personal questions and turn those answers into general answers. Turn these answers into job specific answers. One question is do you have a car and can you make it to work on time? An answer may be something like, I have reliable transportation, and arriving to work on-time has never been an issue for me.

I think a good job is done at getting you to answer the basic questions. The key here is preparation. It is not the time to think of your answer at the job interview, at this point you should be ready to say your answer immediately when asked the question. Many questions are asked in this book that will make you think and be ready for your next job interview. Going over these questions and deciding what your answers will be ahead of time will aide you greatly in your next job interview.

1 out of 5 stars Not Complete.......2003-03-10

I've just started my job search, but already I have read a few job interview books. This one does not compare favorably with the others, such as Knock Em Dead and 101 Great Answers to the Toughest Interview Questions. Like 101 Great Answers it has questions and sample responses. However, unlike 101 Great Answers, the responses seem canned. Other books emphasize that you need to answer the questions for yourself and not just cut and paste the responses into your repetoire of answers, but this one leads you to believe that if you follow their responses exactly, you will more likely have a better interview. What also is missing is a clear overview of the process you need to go through to prepare yourself. This is where Knock Em Dead is much better. It puts the interview in the context of the whole job search process.

Recommendation: Choose a better interview book. The suggestions in this book won't make you stand out from the rest or be true to yourself.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless for Professionals.......2003-02-24

I found this book absolutely worthless for anyone pursuing a professional career. 50% or more of the questions it helps you answer are questions that I have never heard asked in an interview and it would be the waste of an interviewers time to ask them. I have interviewed people for my past employers before and I would never dream of asking most of these questions, so why would you waste your time preparing for them? What's worse, the questions that I hear most frequently when being interviewed don't seem to be mentioned in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2002-03-16

Everyone that I've lent this book to has found it very helpful. This book is highly recommended and I believe it's the best out there in the market.

This is an excellent book. The author has done a great job in pulling together the elements which spell success in the quest for employment. I recommend it.

          Book Description

While the state of California remains one of the most striking and varied landscapes in the world, it has experienced monumental changes since European settlers first set foot there. The past two centuries have witnessed an ongoing struggle between environment and economy, nature and humanity that has left an indelible mark on the region.

Green Versus Gold provides a compelling look at California's environmental history from its Native American past to conflicts and movements of recent decades. Acclaimed environmental historian Carolyn Merchant has brought together a vast storehouse of primary sources and interpretive essays to create a comprehensive picture of the history of ecological and human interactions in one of the nation's most diverse and resource-rich states.

For each chapter, Merchant has selected original documents that give readers an eyewitness account of specific environments and periods, along with essays from leading historians, geographers, scientists, and other experts that provide context and analysis for the documents. In addition, she presents a list of further readings of both primary and secondary sources. Among other topics, chapters examine.

        • California's natural environment and Native American lands
        • the Spanish and Russian frontiers
        • environmental impacts of the gold rush
        • the transformation of forests and rangelands
        • agriculture and irrigation
        • cities and urban issues
        • the rise of environmental science and contemporary environmental movement.

Merchant's informed and well-chosen selections present a unique view of decades of environmental change and controversy. Historians, educators, environmentalists, writers, students, scientists, policy makers, and others will find the book an enlightening and important contribution to the debate over our nation's environmental history.

WORK AND REWARDS IN THE VIRTUAL WORKPLACE A 'New Deal' for Organizations and Employees

What is the 'virtual workplace'? It is a world where networks of people engage in work, but are not bound by the traditional limitations of time and space -- they need not work in the same place or keep standard business hours. And it is a growing reality for many companies.

The question for managers is: How do you manage workflow and employee efforts in what seems such an amorphous situation? This forward-thinking book presents an original three-stage model for the virtual workplace and provides case studies that illustrate how this model is working today. Readers learn:

** the skills and competencies required for success ** how work gets assigned, monitored, and measured ** the critical role of rewards and compensation in this new environment ** how to manage the 'blended workplace' that is a combination of regular, contract, and temporary employees ** how to 'go virtual' gradually, at a pace that is right for each organization Readers will get a clear picture of the work skills and competencies they will need to operate successfully as old organizational structures give way to the exciting and challenging environment of the virtual workplace.

            N. FREDRIC CRANDALL, Ph.D., and MARC J. WALLACE, Ph.D. (Northbrook, IL) are nationally recognized experts on organizational change, human resources strategies, compensation, and rewards. Both have written and lectured widely, and Dr. Wallace is the author of more than 10 bestselling textbooks. They are partners in the prestigious consulting firm, Center for Workforce Effectiveness.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2002-07-30

Work and Rewards is chock full of useful information. Crandall and Wallace write mainly for organizations that resemble their clients -- corporations that manufacture goods for profit. But I think this book is even of value for non-profits. While obviously helpful for human resource people, this book would be beneficial reading for CEOs, top organizational leaders, and even frontline supervisors.

"The job is dead," the authors declare. "Job" is part of the "old deal" marked by cradle-to-grave security. "The New Deal will require us to act as adults, not children." Employees will be increasingly responsible for acquiring the skills needed by their employers. Narrow job descriptions are already giving way to broader, more flexible skill sets. The authors claim this shift will help organizations run more effectively and will increase worker satisfaction.

Don't be mistaken; Work and Rewards is not a pie-in-the-sky futurists dream. It is based on the real life experiences the authors have had with dozens of clients, including Sony, Corning, and others. Work and Rewards is packed with practical models, steps, outlines, case studies, plans, and formulas. These tools can help organizations evaluate the cost of going virtual, determine what key drivers the organization wants to reward, and how to manage the transition.

I highly recommend Work and Rewards.

            Chapters include:

            9. Getting to the New Deal in the Virtual Workplace

            5 out of 5 stars "New paradigm as skill-or competency-based pay.".......2000-05-22

"Economic and technological forces have converged in this last decade of the twentieth century to create an entirely new form of business competition. The New Competition", N. Fredric Crandall and Marc J. Wallace, JR. write, "encompasses a global economy and is driven by information rather than product and by time rather than space, creating a revolution in the way we do business...The New Competition has emerged in three parallel developments: (1). Former competitors forming alliances to command the market, (2). New marriages of technology, markets, and opportunity, and (3). The creation of new business entities that replace traditional ones, defining the entire length of a value chain-a form of organization that has been characterized as the virtual organization...The virtual organization requires a virtual workplace. The virtual workplace is a work environment where goods and services are created and delivered joining employees beyond the traditional bounds of time and place. Technology is a foundation for the virtual workplace, creating the means for innovations in working relationship such as teams of people who work together via teleconferencing or transfer work in progress from one venue to the next across time zones to keep work going on a continuous basis."

In this context, in Chapter Six, they examine how the role of rewards and compensation changes when an organization evolves from a traditional to a virtual workplace. Firstly, they define job in a traditional organization and argue: "The job concept served traditional organizations well. Work has been organized in a command-and-conrol bureaucracy characterized by functional specifications and hierarchy. It is a paradigm shaped by early twentieth-century thinking of Max Weber and Frederick W. Taylor, implemented by Henry Ford, and cast in the legislation of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal of the 1930s. Unfortunatelly the paradigm no longer serves us because the job has died. Globalization of production and technological revolution have forced us into a post-industrial model for producing goods and services. The work designs of the virtual workplace have forced companies to tear down hierarchy do away with functional specialization, and organize all activities according to entire business processes that cut across traditional departments and occupations."

Hence, they compare traditional and virtual base pay models, and argue that in the new workplace people are paid not for the job they hold but for the role they are expected to play.

            I. Base Pay Model in the Traditional Workplace:

            1. Unit of analysis: Job

            2. Basis for determining value: Job evaluation

            3. What pay is for: Work performed

            4. Base pay progression: (a). Modest movement within grades to mid-point. Pay is controlled to mid-point. (b). Promotion required for significant advancement.

            5. Base pay structure: Many narrow grades, hierarchically arranged.

II. Base Pay Model in the Virtual / New Paradigm Workplace:

            1. Unit of analysis: Personal role

            2. Basis for determining value: Personal evaluation

            3. What is pay for: Capacity to perform

            4. Base pay progression: Significant movement from entry rate to target rate based on capacity acquisition.

            5. Base pay structure: Few, broad bands

Finally, they define this new paradigm as skill-or-competency-based pay, and argue: " the base pay progression policy that best serves the virtual workplace is skill-or competency-based pay.

            I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars An insightful tour through virtual organization realities.......1998-08-14

Like the industrial revolution before it, the Information Age is giving rise to new types of organizations, new ways of working, and new approaches to human resource management. This technology-driven economy, with its virtual realities, is profoundly reshaping the nature of relationships between organizations, as well as between the organization and the individual.

On a macro level, the authors aim to show how a new social contract (New Deal) is developing between individuals and organizations, replacing the traditional employer-employee relationship. Through this virtual revolution, the conflict, as many see and experience it today, between people and technology will be overcome. And free market dynamics make it inevitable that virtual organizations will and must continue emerging.

Moving from the macro to the micro, the authors explore some of the pivotal changes taking place today; changes in the nature of the workplace, the design of work, the use of competencies, the characteristics of reward systems, learning, career opportunities, and staffing. Numerous tables and diagrams, as well as illustrations from company experiences, highlight key points and make the distinctions between traditional and virtual workplaces vivid. There is a lot to be gained from each chapter. Guidelines are presented to help practitioners address their needs for taking action. The authors are also helpful in laying bare serious problems that companies have faced in applying such concepts as skill- or competency-based pay and broad bands which I, as a consultant in organization and compensation, welcome seeing in print. Additionally, the authors present a model to demonstrate the economic value of the virtual workplace. This is an excellent book, impressive in scope and rich in substance.

What a wonderful treat for French kitty fans! These notecards come in an adorable slipcase and feature five brightly-colored images from French Kitty's first book. These cards have different images than the first set of cards that were released, and I actually prefer this set better. Each card is printed on heavy paper with a glossy cover and comes with a powder pink envelope. It would be nice if the cards were a bit bigger, but die-hard French Kitty fans won't mind the small size!

5 out of 5 stars Kind of makes you feel like you were in KISS.......2007-10-01

I read a book by Gene Simmons called KISS AND TELL. I also read a book about KISS called BEHIND THE MASK. After reading KISS FOREVER I noticed something strange happening to my way of thinking in regards to KISS. Before reading these three books I used to think of KISS the way I always had. What songs I liked, which album covers were the best, which costumes were best, ect. After reading this book (and the other two) I know so much about the day to day lives of KISS during the 70s and 80s that now I feel more like I was a member of KISS remembering my days with the band than a fan. As I read this I found it easy to imagine what it would have been like to have been a member of KISS. The book states when someone was sick, when their pants split on stage, when they did store appearances, ect. If you're a KISS fan you should have this book. I was worried I was wasting my money on a book that I wouldn't find interesting but I was wrong. Its a great book.

            5 out of 5 stars A ton of info.......2006-11-29

this is a great read. i like to just pick it up and browse. Interesting to see the actual attendence figures because they prove how much money KISS LOST in order to put on a good show. There are many dates that werent even close to selling out (mostly in the 80s), but it also shows that even in their hey day they usually only sold out places with apprx. 8 - 10,000 seats. Being compared to todays standards, that is pretty weak considering the sizeable show they toured with.
The set lists are interesting as well. Though many are the same, now and then you see a song and wish you were there to hear them play it! This book also has a few interesting notes in between tours.
This is one of the best books out there for kiss fans. Gives you a new appreciation for the band as you see how they played to a lot of half empty halls but still stuck with it. the book is also honest in its figures, no sugar coating. a really cool read that must have taken months, if not years, of research. Essential for any Kiss fan as well as rock n roll fans in general.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2006-02-18

Kiss Alive Forever is a must read for any KISS fan. The book is filled with details from all their tours including dates, set lists, and many, many details from each show.

5 out of 5 stars So Much Information.......2006-01-11

This book has all the facts and figures about Kiss concerts that I've never read anywhere else.

It tells you the dates of each show, how much capacity the arena holds, what the attendance figures were, what songs were sung at most shows, in the order in which they were performed. It also has interviews with some touring personnel and their memories of the tour and/or show.

I really appreciated the end of the book that has all the songs Kiss has ever performed, the first and last time they performed the song (Hard Luck Woman was ever only performed during an 11 day period in 1976 and NOT during the three Forum shows that were recorded for Alive II. Some songs were only ever performed once, others only in other countries).

It breaks each tour down by album, tells you the biggest shows by attendance, all of their opening acts, who Kiss opened up for. It is packed with tons of information you never hear Gene and Paul talk about.

A must for any Kiss fan or anyone who enjoys the behind the scenes happenings of a major rock act.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!! A must for the true KISS fan........2005-11-28

I've had this book for a couple years now and I can't put it down. I read it over and over and find interesting new facts every time. A day to day history of all their tours from day 1.

              Book Description

This book contains a selection of papers from the prestigious Research Committee on International Tourism presented at the World Congress of the International Sociological Association, Brisbane, Australia, July 2002. It provides a sociological and anthropological critique of existing tourism theory as well as some directions for its future development and research. While much of the present understanding of the tourist and tourism is grounded in metaphor (e.g. tourism as a sacred journey, tourism as play, the tourist as a child, etc.) such analogies need to be linked to transformations in tourism generating and receiving societies. Hence the focus on the tourist and everyday life, socio-psychological dimensions of the tourist experience, the tourist and conflicting expectations, and the tourist in a changing world.

This bok is great book for starters! I really do recomend it for starters. Other than that its an ok book. You can master the book in 3-4 days, and a magic book should last much much much longer. I do however recomend this book for people who are intrested in starting card magic.

4 out of 5 stars Good book on card magic!.......1999-11-23

This is not an excellent book, but it's not a bad book either. It's a good book: it contains tricks for you who doesn't know sleight of hand and for you who knows it. The self-working tricks contained here are not dumb, they do have that great climax too. You'll also find some tricks that require gimmicked decks, such as the Stripper Deck, but most of them only require a normal deck and/or usual props such as a rubber band. If you look for some classic tricks but not the one's shown on TV, you'll be happy to own this book.

5 out of 5 stars Unique card magic!!.......1999-06-27

This book has a wealth of information on card handling and technique. There are many top notch card effects including some different and offbeat tricks. Charles Jordan was definetely a card genius and you will see why in the way his card magic is done. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure Chest of Card Magic.......1997-04-22

This book will open your eyes to the world of cards and how they work. Karl Fulves revisits the manuscripts of the World's leading card man. Many of the illusions in the book are from Charles Jordan's own hand. Mr. Fulves adds notes to the end of several tricks. This book is a must own. If you buy only ONE book on cards, this is going to be your bible. It is rarely seen

4 out of 5 stars PODS confusion.. decent book.......2006-10-18

I found this to be the only Palm Programming book available when I was attempting to learn to program my Palm. It certainly takes a bit of disassembling to figure out how the nuts and bolts work but it is actually a decent book.

As previously mentioned, there seems to be a lack of info about the PODS compiler because most all of the samples are written for codewarrior. I found this to be a bit frustrating because I spent a lot of time reworking the resource files to make the samples work.

Other than that, I would say the book covers quite a bit of material and is certainly ample for an intermediate programmer (with some C/C++ experience). If you are using the free Palm Developer Suite (PODS) just know that you will have to do a bit of reading on your own (reading Palm documentation) to figure out how to make things work.

I'd like to see more samples.. perhaps I'll write a few myself and start a website to help other novices like me learn the basics.

              2 out of 5 stars Needs re-organized.......2006-02-21

This book would be better if it was re-organized. By chapter 4 you are entering a program, but you can't run it until after several more chapters, as creating resource files isn't discussed until chapter 6. Without the resource files (icons, form definition, etc.) the program can't run. Sort of disappointing after typing in all that code.

The books web site includes complete code for those using either CodeWarrior 8 or 9, but if you are using PODS you are out of luck. It discusses PODS, but as something of an after thought. The PODS documentation will serve you far better.

I also hope you are already familiar with C/C++ programming.

All the information to program for Palm OS appears to be here, but you will have to hunt around for it and be familiar with what you are doing.

Definitely not a raw beginner's guide.

4 out of 5 stars The only game in town.......2005-11-22

This would appear to be the only up-to-date introduction to Palm programming and one of the few in print. It supersedes the Palm OS Programming Bible.

The book covers the ground pretty well for both the Garnet and Cobalt flavors of the OS, and describes the different development systems available, including Eclipse (available free with the SDK from Palm). The text is very readable.

You see a lot of complaints about programming manuals that are 80% code, and that complaint certainly doesn't apply here. In fact, I find myself wishing that there were more (short) code examples in the text. The full sample code must be downloaded from the publisher's site, and much of the text won't mean much without reference to that code.

The documentation that comes with the Palm SDK is pretty good, and of course essential, but for an overview in a handier format, this book can be recommended.

1 out of 5 stars not worth much.......2006-08-02

You can pick up this book cheap, but it's not worth much.

I thought it was funny that two previous users who haven't reviewed any other books both happened to use the same UK slang word "freshers". One of them is supposedly from Chicago. Yeah, right. Maybe they are friends of the author.

I didn't even know what they were talking about at first. A dictionary gives this definition:
              noun [C] UK INFORMAL
a student who has recently started studying at a college or university

Anyway, don't know why this book would be good for students. I doubt there are many colleges which offer classes in Palm programming. Maybe it is good for students who want to pretend that they worked on real world projects and gives them something to talk about. Otherwise, I don't think the book is useful.

              5 out of 5 stars Complete Book.......2005-03-26

This book is complete in itself. It starts from design and closes at implementation. Good practical start for freshers.

              5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-03-26

I am amazed how well this book relates industry experience for Palm programming novices, and that too using a hypothetical scenario. Great Job! Must read for all freshers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Hands-on Practice.......2005-03-14

This book is too good for beginners and learners needing professional practice.

I recommend this book the best way to start for all beginners.

There's money to be made in developing applications for the Palm OS. As 3Com sells more of its devices, and licensees like Handspring add to the Palm OS universe, there's an ever-growing number of people who want to use their handheld computers to make their lives easier. By reading Palm OS Programming from the Ground Up, you can learn how to satisfy this market demand with quality software. Because author Robert Mykland is so liberal in sharing his ideas and exhibits such talent in communicating them effectively, you'll probably also enjoy the learning process.

Mykland takes care to explain every aspect of the programs he includes in this book, even going so far as to discuss what event-driven interfaces are and what the most elementary C statements do. Sometimes he includes really long code listings without much explanatory commentary in the immediate context, but you're usually able to figure out what he's doing by referring back to earlier sections. As you work through the explanations and exercises, you'll develop a solid understanding of how the Palm OS takes in, processes, and displays information. Experienced C developers won't find this book overly elementary, though, as Mykland digs fairly deep into the Palm OS's capabilities (including a considerable bit about its database format). A concluding section on tricks you can use to minimize bugs and speed the development process is particularly valuable. --David Wall

Topics covered: Developing software for 3Com's Palm OS for handheld computers and means of collecting, storing, and manipulating data. Other topics have to do with designing attractive user interfaces, using Palm OS development tools (especially MetroWerks CodeWarrior 6), databases, and troubleshooting.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty much outdated by now ... errors and bugs.......2004-01-24

The book is pretty much outdated by now. The included version of codewarrior only works with Palm OS 3.5 while 4.1 is out. It supports debugging only through the serial interface, many new palms use USB, which will mean you'll need to get a serial to usb or use the emulator. The starter application didn't work from first time. I'm even pretty much reluctant to continue reading. Requires putting the palm into console mode with special key combination that didn't work for me. I have Palm Zire, with Palm OS 4.1, which is a resonable development platform I suppose.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on Palm OS Programming.......2002-08-26

I have some experience with C++. I felt the sample applications in this book were easier to understand and follow than the more complicated librarian example application in the Palm OS Bible by Glenn Brown (though it is a good book also). Granted this book does have problems with the code, and is based on an older version of Palm, the problems were easily worked through with the Palm provided documentation from the Palm website. One drawback is that the book does focus on using the CodeWarrior product, but again with a little effort, the samples can be easily ported to using the free PRC-Tools/GCC software. Actually if the Palm OS Bible and this book were merged, it would make a really great reference.

1 out of 5 stars Not a book for the novice!.......2002-05-07

I saw this at the local bookstore and figured it would be useful. I am relatively inexperienced with C, and I know nothing of C++. I thought this book would be a good introduction to Palm programming. It is difficult to understand as it was not written for a novice (contrary to the claims on the cover).
