Book Description
Puerto Rican Women and Work: Bridges in Transnational Labor is the only comprehensive study of the role of Puerto Rican women workers in the evolution of a transnational labor force in the twentieth century.
This book examines Puerto Rican women workers, both in Puerto Rico and on the U.S. mainland. It contains a range of information--historical, ethnographic, and statistical. The contributors provide insights into the effects of migration and unionization on women's work, taking into account U.S. colonialism and globalization of capitalism throughout the century as well as the impact of Operation Bootstrap. The essays are arranged in chronological order to reveal the evolutionary nature of women's work and the fluctuations in migration, technology, and the economy. This one-of-a-kind collection will be a valuable resource for those interested in women's studies, ethnic studies, and Puerto Rican and Latino studies, as well as labor studies.
Book Description
Oh, Vulgar Wind: A Sympathetic Overview of the Common Fart by Munroe Scott Being flatulent is a price we all pay for being part of the animal kingdom. Some people pay a heavier price than others. One thing's for sure - people never tire of this most public of private functions. Oh, Vulgar Wind, subtitled A Sympathetic Overview of the Common Fart, pays tribute to this windy and winsome act. With wit and insight, award winning writer Munroe Scott wafts elegantly through history and literature, through dictionaries and lexicons, and even through medicine and nutrition to air this most vagrant and often volatile subject.

With Heart and Hands and Voices.......2007-06-18
Excellent! Thank you so much for your quick turn around on this order.
Dissapointed.......2007-01-10
I could not tell from the description of this book and two others which one was for adults. Thus I ended up purchasing a very elementary sunday school book. The description also failed to include the number of pages,
Not a lot of sign language.......2002-06-26
I was under the mistaken impression that this book would contain sign language interpretation of songs for church. It contains mostly refrains and while that's okay, I really would have preferred being able to choose what I might want to sign out of the whole song rather than being given a small part of the song to sign.
Good, but left me wanting more........2001-03-22
As a Sunday School Superintendent, I'm always looking for something new and different for my kids to sing. The songbook, "With Heart and Hands and Voices" does offer 22 bible songs suitable for children, but the majority are already familiar standards. Also, a lot of the songs offer the refrain only and you are left wanting more. The great thing about this book is the sign language. Kids LOVE to learn sign language. I think they get a kick out of doing something mom and dad may not know how to do. The illustrations are done very well and are easy to follow and teach. The book includes very helpful tips on how to enhance the performances of each song, and information about the songs author. I am pleased with the book if only to teach my kids the sign language that goes along with songs they already know. Overall, a good investment for any Sunday School.

Emily Jenkins isn't ashamed of her insecurities, but she isn't throwing away her preconceptions, either. Tongue First can be reassuring to anyone who has felt embarrassed about disrobing in public or wonders about being more adventurous, as Jenkins unleashes her wit on topics from sensory deprivation to tattoos to afternoon naps. All sorts of things get tasted in this book: scary things, exciting things, fun things, banal things. Somehow, Jenkins portrays them as all OK--or, at least, just as OK as anything else.
This catalog of emotions and experiences categorizes body decoration as celebration, explores what people do to control rebellious bodies (or to flout the convention that says they should), shows how getting a tattoo isn't all that different from the search for the perfect shade of red lipstick, and gives us a good look at the inside of Jenkins's head (and, in the chapter in which she shaves it, the outside as well). Her catty wit can sometimes occlude her message; when she slams an outré practice, then demonstrates that it's just like what ordinary people do, the reader may well ask if Jenkins is kidding or making social commentary, particularly since her criticisms rarely get more judgmental than a resounding "not for me, thanks." --Cheryl Trooskin
Book Description
A smart, humorous exploration of bodily thrills and paranoia from aerobics to acupuncture, strip shows to sensory deprivation.
Your perception of your body will change when you read this book. You will be pulling on your boxer shorts or your black lace bra, and suddenly consider why you decorate yourself the way you do. You will shake up your martini, kiss your beloved, read a dirty magazine, go for a jog, and think about what your bodily behavior says about your soul. And what it is doing to your soul. You will notice the defenses you erect for yourself. Perhaps a tube of lipstick. Perhaps an addiction.
Testing the boundaries between fear and temptation, Emily Jenkins takes us on a journey from ordinary physical experiences (going to the dentist, putting on stockings) to extreme ones (snorting heroin, shaving her head). She interviews people whose bodies are radically different from hers and enters communities where people share unusual ideas about physicality. Sometimes you will recognize your own habits. Other times you'll be shocked or repulsed. Always you will find yourself questioning the ordinary things you do, rethinking your relationship to your body.
Customer Reviews:
Been there done that.......2002-05-31
It started off okay. Heroine never did that. I couldn't wait to see what else she was going to try. Much to my dismay I had done most everything she described. I am only 27 years old. I feel so bad for her if the experiences she talks about are really major tests or adventures. I can tell you that she really wasn't taking any chances here. I thought maybe there would be more experimental behaviors rather than tested and true life experiences that most of us have. Don't buy it and don't read it. And for goodness sakes if you liked this book please get out of that chair and experience life!!!
An inspired taste of things I'd rather not eat.......1999-08-18
In spirited, refreshing prose, this book allowed me to venture into and vicariously experience much of the current bodily culture scene. In places, Jenkins' astute sensitivity is touching and disturbing. I closed the last page bigger in awareness than when I opened the first.
Mediocre.......1999-06-22
No insights to be gleaned here
disappointed, disappointed, disappointed!.......1999-01-13
I thought this book was going to be eye-opening to things that I knew I would never try. Instead the author spent more time discussing (or boring us with) her opinion on the subject matters then actual time being involved in the events. If I had known that it was a book of opinions I would have never purchased it. Everyone has an opinion on these subjects, we wanted to know what it was like to experience them.
Thought-provoking, vivid, engaging........1998-10-06
I loved this book. First off, Jenkins writes wonderfully--her descriptions of her own and others' experiences of bodily culture, from taking heroin to choosing a lipstick, vividly (and often hilariously) take the reader there. Second, the book is thought provoking. Without ever becoming didactic, Jenkins reliably offers insights every few pages that stop the reader short. Jenkins richly engages us in pondering the meaning (cultural and personal) of the thousands of choices we each make about our body.

Book Description
Baseball and board game collectors alike will be thrilled with this wonderful new book. Illustrated in full-color, it contains nearly every baseball board or table game produced from the 1860s to the 1960s. With the games reflecting the evolution of the National Pastime, this is a visual history of the game. Information about the games is included in accurate captions, and the context for the games in the history of the professional game is provided by the helpful text. There is a wealth of information for collectors, including tips on the dating of games and rating their condition. There is also a price guide to help the collector assess a fair value for the games. All in all this is an important new book for collectors and historians of the game. In a time when board games are giving way to the fast pace of computers, this is a delightful reminder of simpler times. All in all, this is an important new book for collectors and historians of the game. In a time when board games are giving way to the fast pace of computers, this is a delightful reminder of simpler times.Memorabilia from the National Pastime, also published by Schiffer Publishing.
Customer Reviews:
For collectors only.......2005-08-07
Baseball Games is a very basic effort: the captions give minimal information, the pictures are just satisfactory, and there's no narrative to put the games in any context. And the price is outlandish !
Great Coffee Table book.......2001-08-29
This is simply a picture book of a bunch of baseball games with some organization and text fill. The games are organized by century (18th & 19th), and by type (player-endorsed, non-endorsed, card, action and coin-operated). There's a bit of baseball history, but what you'll want this for is the attention to historical detail in the games themselves. There are hundreds of games photographed in a reasonable (if not exceptional) amount of detail; most of the text is just a description of what's in the pictures. Many versions of popular games are compared, with information on how to tell the versions apart, which will be invaluable if you're a collector. For some reason there's four pages on Cadaco, but neither APBA nor Strat-O-Matic get a look in, nor do more contemporary games from 3M or Sports Illustrated or Avalon Hill. Don't expect a forty-dollar art book with prose that'll entertain you into the night. The printing quality, photo quality, and text-quality are only so so. I'm still waiting for the book that compares how the different games are designed strategically and how they play. This one's aimed more at collectors.

Outstanding Aid.......2007-09-28
The Title is misleading.
This book is for everyone, not just dummies.
I got this book and Ellen Finklestiens as refreshers not having used AutoCAD in over 5 years.
Walking through the AutoCAD bible helped a lot but having this one next to me for quick reference made everything a lot easier
AutoCAD 2005 for Dummies.......2007-07-15
This represents a book for the very beginner to the AutoCAD 2005 program. Assuming zero knowledge, you can at least draw lines and dimension simple projects after reading the book. After reading, I needed to purchase an AutoCAD Bible to progress to a more useful stage. I then passed the book on to another beginner student.
I would recommend buying the more detailed book initially.
OK Book.......2006-08-07
I'm a beginning AutoCAD user, so you can take my comments as you wish. After reading this book, I felt that I VAGUELY knew what AutoCAD was about. As an active-learner, this book fell WAY short. It gives you description after description of what features are included in AutoCAD, with VERY LITTLE, if any, exercises to test the reading just completed. Honestly, if an AutoCAD book has anything less than 600 pages, I'd think twice about getting it. (Think of Noam Chomsky. There's NO WAY he would be able to fully explain, or complete a full argument of, say, US Imperialism in 10 minutes on an NBC segment). While I basically understood what, for example, a line or an arc was, in no way, after reading this book, was I able to put together a tree-house or a detailed cabinet section. After I completed this book, I went directly to the AutoCAD 2005 Bible. THAT book is how you should write an AutoCAD book. It gives you the lingo, in lay-man's terms, and then immediately follows with examples of how to do what she just told you. She (the author) gets the formula just right. Though I'm barely beginning with AutoCAD, my gut feeling is that this book should be a desk reference for Advanced users, NOT Beginners/Dummies. Note: In one section, the author describes how to multiply one number by another (more or less). If you have trouble doing a task such as this, reconsider AutoCAD or prepare for some looooooooooooooooong nights. Don't let AutoCAD for Dummies fool you. You have to have a good amount of intelligence, in my opinion, to figure this stuff out.
Quality book.......2005-08-27
This book is a great reference book. The book highlights all the information worth knowing in a compact form. The only thing that did not make this book perfect is that it did not come with a tutorial on how to do some of the demonstration. Still a great book worth buying even if you are just starting autocad.
AutoCad 2005 For Dummies.......2005-07-21
I personally did not like this book. It has been years, maybe 5, to be exact, since I worked in AutoCad. So I was hoping that I could get this book as a refresher course. NOT!
I was looking for something that served as a quick reference, but it did not. There were not many details about what I was looking for. This book just did not work for me.
I have puchased the AutoCad Bible, I will let you know how this one is......
