The German Experience of Professionalization: Modern Learned Professions and their Organizations from the Early Nineteenth Century to the Hitler Era
Charles E. McClelland Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521394570 |
Book Description
Modern learned professions (medicine, law, teaching, engineering, and others) developed in central Europe just as vigorously as in England or America. Yet their close relationship with state power--more typical of the world development of professions than the Anglo-American model--led to a different historical experience of professionalization. This work is the first to explore that experience in a comprehensive way from the time when modern learned professions arose until the eve of World War II. Based on the history and surviving records of German professional organizations, this work shows how the learned professions emerged gradually in the nineteenth century from the shadow of strong state regulation to achieve a high degree of autonomy and control over professional standards by the First World War. By studying professional groups collectively, it gives a more contoured picture of their fate under National Socialism than works dedicated primarily to the phenomenon of fascism itself.

Growing Apart: The Causes and Consequence of Global Wage Inequality
Manufacturer: Council on Foreign Relations Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0876092555 |
Book Description
Although the dollar value of international trade in goods and services is dwarfed by that of cross-border capital flows, trade over time has had a significantly greater effect on the lives of ordinary individuals in the United States and around the world. Those who seek to protect U.S. domestic markets, such as Pat Buchanan and Ross Perot, cite trade's role in creating "winners" and "losers" in the U.S. economy. As the number of "losers"--including manufacturing laborers displaced by cheap foreign labor as well as firms in industries (such as steel) threatened by cheap imports--grows, so does the chorus for protection of domestic industries. Without such protection, so the logic goes, the wages of workers in these industries either have to fall to compete with foreign workers or be eliminated altogether through layoffs. This important book joins the debate with a robust defense of the principle--and practice--of free trade in the United States. Editors Albert Fishlow and Karen Parker have collected essays from a number of leading economists and trade specialists, including David Blanchflower, Richard Freeman, J. Bradford Jensen, Mark Krikorian, Lisa Lynch, Matthew Slaughter, and Kenneth Troske, that challenge the view that trade is solely responsible for growing inequality in the United States. The authors debunk the generalized notion that protectionism will reverse inequality, elucidating the complexity of a problem of income distribution that includes other key factors such as technological progress, foreign direct investment, immigration, and expanded higher education.

Amazing But True Golf Facts 2002 Day-To-Day Calendar
Allan Zullo , John McGran , and Andrews McMeel Publishing Manufacturer: Andrews Mcmeel Pub (Cal) ProductGroup: Book Binding: Calendar ASIN: 0740716743 |
Book Description
Golfers will begin a round of golf even when it's raining. Golfers will play with snow on the ground. Golfers will play when the temperature dips down to 40 degrees. This information from a recent "Golf In America" online survey would certainly explain why the Amazing But True Golf Facts Calendar is in its twelfth year. The 24.6 million people in the United States who declare themselves golfers give rise to astonishingly impressive statistics and incredibly absurd anecdotes. Either way, their stories make for great reading. The 2002 edition of this hugely popular calendar is packed with accounts like the one about a guy who accomplished one of the rarest feats - he made a hole in one on a par-4 hole. But the fifty-five year old, who didn't see or hear the ball clunk in the cup, searched for it in the rough, a sand trap, and a pond before his playing partner found it in the cup. Hundreds more amazing but true stories are the reason consumers continue to come back for this calendar...in any kind of weather.

A lot of corporate databases are what's behind the Internet revolution. Professional SQL Server 2000 DTS gives DBAs and programmers a handy guide to getting the most out of the Data Transformation Services (DTS)--a flexible set of tools that work on a wide variety of databases--that are available in SQL Server 2000.The hands-on focus of the book makes it a win for readers of all backgrounds. While online help for DTS is not always easy to decipher, this book remedies the situation with plenty of screen shots of all of the major tools in action. Early sections examine nearly two dozen built-in tasks or functions in DTS--from the obvious (copying data from one database to another) to the more esoteric (sending files via FTP within DTS).
A gentle introduction to using VBScript and ActiveX objects gets at the DTS object model to design "custom tasks." By using this approach, you can automate and transform data reliably among different formats, including mainframe and Office documents. (Specific tips guide you in working with DB2 and Excel data.) A standout section looks at "linking" servers and querying data from heterogeneous sources.
You also learn how to build a Web front end (using ASPs) for a data application that uses SQL-DMO APIs to automate database tasks through a browser. Later, there's an excellent tutorial on data warehousing, done the Microsoft way--from the basics of the star, snowflake, and hybrid fact tables for a data mart to setting up and loading the data using DTS, and then running the database with Microsoft Analysis Services. The book closes with a thorough reference section that lists the objects and methods in the DTS object model.
Whether you're performing normal database administration or setting up a data warehouse--or you just want to work with data more effectively within your applications--Professional SQL Server 2000 DTS gives you all of the information that you need to be productive with a powerful (and sometimes overlooked) set of database tools and components. --Richard Dragan

DTS can be used to maximum effect in data-driven applications, offering rapid and effective solutions to a wide range of common problems.
Professional SQL Server 2000 DTS provides a complete introduction to DTS fundamentals and architecture before exploring the more complex data transformations involved in moving data between different servers, applications, and providers. The book then focuses on DTS programming via the DTS object model, enabling developers to incorporate custom transformations and reporting capabilities into their applications. Advanced topics are explained including error handling, dynamic data loading, and data warehouses. With code and case studies, this book gives the reader a complete picture of how to use DTS to its fullest potential.

Very Good Book for DTS.......2005-10-03
Forget about this........2005-06-28
Not worth it.......2004-02-24
I give it 3 stars because they do a good job of at least mentioning probably every concept that relates to DTS, but coverage is mostly shallow and out of focus. There does seem to be heavy emphasis on data warehousing, which I haven't used so far, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt regarding coverage there. Overall I still think I might find something good when I need a reference but so far I have mostly found SQL Books Online equally, or sometimes more useful.
