Red Hot People Jobs.......2000-10-18
As Tom Fischgrund says in THE INSIDER'S GUIDE TO THE TOP 20 CAREERS IN BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT, a good job pays for the lifestyle you want, lets you have a personal life that gets you involved in community charities and sports, and takes you where you want to be over the next 20 years. One of the best preparations is interning while studying accounting and finance, juggling a co-op work program with school such as engineering students do, and looking for companies with training programs such as General Mills, large insurance companies, Procter & Gamble, and Quaker Oats. Then, speaking and writing well and getting along with computers, numbers, and especially people will open the best companies' doors. Succeeding also will mean dressing for success, keeping current on office politics and world trends, knowing company decision makers and industry and trade publications, and meeting deadlines while showing up early and doing what the company sees as important to get done. This book reads well with Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz's THE 100 BEST COMPANIES TO WORK FOR IN AMERICA.

Book Description
This is the first book to offer a comprehensive analysis of labor's worldwide response to globalization. Ronaldo Munck argues that the national period in labor history is decisively over. Now the labor movement is itself acting in a more transnational manner, with workers developing common interests and ways of organizing that transcend national boundaries. Indeed, the trade union movement could play a major role in the regulation of a global economic system now largely out of control.

Gaskell's Best Yet..........2007-09-28
Not to take away from her other books because I am a huge fan of those as well... they had me LOL and staying up late... but Mommy Tracked has more depth. In between the hilarious predicaments, there is a truth and deepness as to what issues many moms face today. There is also so much more vividness to the details in this book. If you are a mom, this is a must read and if you're not a mom... just have fun!
Another great book by Whitney Gaskell.......2007-09-27
Readers beware. By the time you finish Mommy Tracked, you'll want to go grab some coffee with Anna, Grace, Juliet, and Chloe, only to remember, sadly, that you can't grab coffee with fictional characters! This book is a funny, warm story of four friends as they navigate the roller coaster ride of motherhood, marriage, career, and friendship. It's filled with both hilarious and poignant episodes that will keep you turning the pages. It's a great read and perfect companion to that cup of coffee.
You'll smile in recognition..........2007-09-25
Whitney Gaskell's book is fantastic. She turns many of the ordinary thoughts we all have into a funny, great read. Reading the book is like having a conversation with your best friends---you recognize so much of what she writes as moments from your own lives. A great read!
Great!.......2007-09-22
This book is great entertainment. A funny look at true mommy-hood from very different perspectives. Fun, smart and real. Another great Whitney Gaskell book.

Book Description
Are You Married To Mommy?
The term "Mommy" perfectly defines the persona that many women take on after just a few short years of marriage. Generally uptight, perpetually practical, and constantly striving to be in control of everything all the timethe dreadnought Mommy is a marital force to be reckoned with.
When a guy gets married, he conceives of the union with simple logic:
- She's kinda fun.
- I like sex with her.
- If we get married, I'll get more.
- If I don't get married, I could end up wasting my life away in front of the tube with the guys, scratching my balls and eating fried pork rinds.
An aspiring "Mommy" wants more. If a guy's not careful, she will take his time, his money, his power, his identity, his self-respect, his man-seed, and ultimately, his fun. Humorously illuminating the stark daily reality of matrimony, this handbook takes on topics discussed only between the best of buddies, and even then only after a few beers. This book gives married (or soon-to-be-married) guys never-before-published hints and tips for grappling with the overwhelming power and inexhaustible resolve of Mommy!
Learn how to:
- Determine if you married a Mommy
- Evade Mommy's ever-present spotlight of accountability
- Never again come home "late"
- Inoculate yourself against the dreaded "Martha Stewart Syndrome"
- Steer clear of the "Victoria's Secret Mistake"
- Recognize all eleven types of married sex
- And so much more!
Written by two "Professors of Matrimony," Married To Mommy? saves guys from years of confusion, struggle, and frustration. The professors' step-by-step lessons provide death-defying shortcuts to a calmer, happier, sexier marriage and a fighting chance of surviving as a male
married to Mommy!
Customer Reviews:
Funny, but impractical.......2005-12-22
Really, if you're having trouble in your marriage, this book probably won't help things much. According to the authors, it's perfectly okay for all married men to be a bunch of chauvinistic alcoholics who love to spend a lot of their free time "out with the guys" and shirk off as much reponsibilty as possible. "Men" who appear to have never truly grown into mature adults, who don't seem to make their wives or their marriage much of a priority. Well, I like to drink once in awhile but don't like to go out much, and also find that women can be just as cool to hang around with as men, so it doesn't seem I fit into the authors' perception of what a normal guy is. Yeah, the book's good for a few laughs, and explains all kinds of ways to lie to your wife, pretty much making her into one big dupe as you go constantly out-scheme and out-maneuver her. But this is the real world, guys. A lot of the thought and "advice" in this book are really just downright ridiculous. It's hard to believe that any intelligent man would be expected to take this stuff seriously; it feels more like a book you'd find in the humor section. It just doesn't get to the core(s) of the problem, and some of the ideas look like they could even do more harm than good in the long run. In my situation, I learned my wife was acting like a "mommy" because of self esteem issues. I learned that I had to stop thinking of myself so much and give her the attention she deserves by listening (really listening) to her more and complimenting her more and speaking calmly and rationally when tempted to fight with her. Oh, I'm "whipped" you say? No, but we're both a lot happier. She has more confidence in herself and she's doesn't feel the need to act so much like a "mommy" anymore. But your situation might be different, like you, the husband, may be the one needing more self-confidence. Go read the downloadable book by Katie Zaltman if you need help in your marriage or even if you're about to get married. She very quickly gets to the point, doesn't pull any punches, plus she's funny as hell. Very easy to follow and utilize. I noticed a positive and dramatic change in my marriage after reading just the first ten pages (out of 150)! Reading "Married to Mommy?" did not help at all. It only sympathizes with your situation and can be pretty funny, but it doesn't help you change for the better. Also, at the end of "Married to Mommy?" it says that neither of the authors happens to be married to a "mommy." What!!? Yeah, I don't get it either.
Why it scared me..........2005-07-26
I brought this book with me last week (July 20, 2005) to read during my free time while acting as a responsible adult at boy scout camp. Ohmygod. While well-written and funny (at times), it put a knot in my stomach. I started bumming out. I mean, they hit it on the head on almost every point.
To me, this wasn't funny, it was horrifying. If I were single and saw this happening to my friends, perhaps I'd have seen more humor in it, but after 14 years of marriage, this did nothing but remind me of my situation.
As I sat with the scouts, whittling, belching, and generally being guys, it only hurt more. If that's not enough, on Friday, it was "family night" and in marched the mommies. My wife was instantly trying to clean out our son's tent. I stopped her. Another kid made some comment about it not being as great as he thought it would be, and one of the other mommies was psychoanalyzing him on the spot. I stopped her, too.
I'm seriously considering signing up for another week of scout camp, and I'm going to use "Married to Mommy" as tinder for my campfire.
(heavy sigh)
a must have for the married (and soon to be married).......2003-11-23
This book had both my wife and I laughing (and learning) all the way through. This book brings many serious topics out in the open for discussion in a humorous and light-hearted manner. I recommend it to married and soon to be married couples as a good read and a life long, truly funny reference guide.
Thanks! When's the sequel coming?
Buy, read, laugh, learn!.......2003-11-01
This book hits a nerve and the funny bone at the same time! I've never laughed so loud! These guys have almost too much fun with an otherwise dark and scary topic - the "Nuptial Netherworld"! Every friend I've recommended it to can't thank me enough. Everyone - man or woman - should get this book and then personally thank the "Professors"!!!
Long on humor, short on practical advice.......2003-10-20
I would have laughed reading this book if it wasn't so true. They went to great lengths identifying everything a guy contemplating marriage needs to know. In fact, this book should be required reading BEFORE tying the knot. However, the advice for dealing with marriage is seriously lacking. I expected to find advice to tell me how to change a relationship that's sucking the life out of me into one that's fulfilling, but instead got the equivalent of "there's nothing you can do to change it, so learn to cope the best you can." Entertaining, but disappointing.

Customer Reviews:
Why this book SHOULD be in Nassau Community College Library!.......2006-11-16
Answers is a book about female leadership role models, the challenges they faced and overcame en route to their position of respect in American life. Who IS the audience for this book? The audience includes any young girl or woman who has scanned bookshelves everywhere searching for exemplary women who resisted the social biases of school marms, sorority sisters, AND librarians trying to protect aspiring females from the challenges of personal achievement. Ferguson and Dunphy are demonstrating to women HOW TO praise, admire, respect and honor OTHER women of achievement. Until women are willing to praise great women, to learn from the successful and accomplished women, we will not be able to "see further... by standing on the shoulders of giants." Buy this book and put it in your daughter's library, today!

Customer Reviews:
Weezer.......2007-08-16
I really enjoyed this book. The writing wasn't to hot but it's a must have for any weezer fan. =w=
Very Good.......2006-03-06
Rivers' Edge is an interesting and fun read, every Weezer fan should own this book.
the what story?.......2006-01-28
this is an awsome book! it takes you from the way beginning to now, and it fills pretty much all the spaces in between. awsome pictures, an awsome book to read if youre a weezer fan.
Half Japanese Girls, Megalomania And Other Fetishes.......2005-11-15
Whether it be his fetish for half-Japanese girls, his monkish vows of silence, abstinence and segregration or his self-described "socially retarded" ways, there's no doubting Weezer mainman Rivers Cuomo is a strange character. Born to a soccer-mad father and Buddhist mother who almost named him Apple, perhaps it was his rearing in a hippy commune where music and childhood games were contraband that ensured Rivers grew to be so odd. What this book ensures is that his musical legacy (incredibly prolific despite only five official studio albums in over a decade), devout fanbase and impact on American rock isn't overshadowed by his megalomania and mystery. Strong on details of Weezer's unreleased mountain of songs and unusual scraps such as Rivers' befriending Will Ferrell, writing songs for Enrique Iglesias and loving nu-metal cocks such as Limp Bizkit and Crazy Town, Rivers' Edge is a strong Weezer biography only let down by a dribbling finale that closes before the release of 2005's Make Believe.
More a patchwork than a real bio.......2005-05-12
When I first heard of a Weezer biography, I was really stoked, 'cause clearly there is a lot of interesting stuff to be told about that band. But I was a bit deceived by that biography. It's kind of poorly written, with grammar mistakes and word repetitions at a couple of places. The information contained in the book is accurate and complete, but the author's way of writing is not fluent at all, which makes the reading a little less enjoyable. Hardcore Weezer fans should read it though, because there is a lot of information in there, but it's mostly about Rivers Cuomo's behaviour with the others. The book could have been called "Rivers'trial". It's more a patchwork of quotes than a real biography, in the end, but there is some very funny and interesting parts. Only for diehard fans.
Book Description
With Amusement for All is a sweeping interpretative history of American popular culture. Providing deep insights into various individuals, events, and movements, LeRoy Ashby explores the development and influence of popular culturefrom minstrel shows to hip-hop, from the penny press to pulp magazines, from the NBA to NASCAR, and much in between.
By placing the evolution of popular amusement in historical context, Ashby illuminates the complex ways in which popular culture both reflects and transforms American society. He demonstrates a recurring pattern in democratic culture by showing how groups and individuals on the cultural and social periphery have profoundly altered the nature of mainstream entertainment. The mainstream has repeatedly co-opted and sanitized marginal trends in a process that continues to shift the limits of acceptability. Ashby describes how social control and notions of public morality often vie with the bold, erotic, and sensational as entrepreneurs finesse the vagaries of the market and shape public appetites.
Ashby argues that popular culture is indeed a democratic art, as it entertains the masses, provides opportunities for powerless and disadvantaged individuals to succeed, and responds to changing public hopes, fears, and desires. However, it has also served to reinforce prejudices, leading to discrimination and violence. Accordingly, the study of popular culture reveals the often dubious contours of the American dream.
With Amusement for All never loses sight of pop culture's primary goal: the buying and selling of fun. Ironically, although popular culture has drawn an enormous variety of amusements from grassroots origins, the biggest winners are most often sprawling corporations with little connection to a movement's original innovators.
Customer Reviews:
Very entertaining, for a big fat slightly scary book...........2007-02-23
There are, inevitably, some sources of popular culture not included- the drinking den, from gin palace to wine bar, for instance.
But the tensions between what the upper classes think is proper culture ("you have to be THIS smart to go on this ride" still applies to the visual arts - the less there truly is to it, as most ideas expressed in art could be found in a paperback novel, the most snooty the claims made about it. It's all about shifting luxury goods ands flattering the monied that they have "taste")) and what The People really like (Fox, Murdoch help us) are exposed as constant over three centuries.
I am a rock music obsessessive, and learned stuff about Elvis I never knew - what a social-sexual rebel he really was, with his Tony Curtis style eye makeup. I took this fattie on vocation, as opposed to my usual Stephen King, and read every page, and the indexes!!!)
Comprehensive.......2007-02-12
A central image to Ashby's description of the nature of popular culture is the circus, with its large acts meant for mass consumption and its sideshows that satisfy some darker human curiosities. Through the course of the book, he shows how popular sideshow acts eventually achieve acceptance in the "big tent." The book covers many types of popular culture, from minstrel shows to boxing to hip hop. Many interesting details, written in an academic but entertaining style.
