    I am in the hotel business and have been for 10 years. Mr. Ismail and one of his contributers, Mr. Sweetland both are dead on target with their advice and I recommend this book to anyone who is even thinking of getting into the Hospitality Business. This book is to be required reading for anyone aspiring to management in my hotel from this day forward. If you are considering purchacing a franchise, this is a must read!

              5 out of 5 stars Brings balance to the "new" labor movement.......1999-07-09

              Ever since John Sweeney declared that organizing is labor's top priority, numerous books have appeared that describe union strategies in organizing including mobilizing the rank-and-file. But the authors in this book would find that the top-down and staff directed nature of those efforts only minimally overlap with rank-and-file democracy. They feel that actual rank-and-file empowerment within union processes is the only way for the labor movement to regain its former stature. But many questions do arise. None of the authors clearly differentiate between worker democracy within local unions and democracy over workplace affairs. The NLRA restriction to bargaining over wages and conditions has proven to be disastrous to working people. But labor activists and these authors seem to accept this limited role for unions. But that is hiring-hall unionism where jobs may last only a few weeks and larger company strategies are mostly irrelevant. Most working people are firm-located and need to have input to company plans regarding investment, marketing, products, plant closings and locations, etc. If that is company unionism, so be it. Also, the authors point to a nebulous concept of social unionism as a desired path for unions. The fact of the matter is that in the past larger community support for unions was because working people at one time lived in highly localized ethnic, urban communities or small company oriented towns. Many of those communites no longer exist. The authors have confused unions with a political party that is devoted to the social interests of the entire working class. National unions in the U.S. are really very narrowly focused businesses: they collect dues, actively try to increase membership, and provide bargaining and contract administrative services. And are very concerned with survival for their own sake. Since the authors have made rank-and-file democracy their central concern, it is a shortcoming of the book that no comparative analysis of the industrial relations system of a northern European country where workers have legislated co-determination rights was included . The bottom line for this book is that it is well worth reading. It is not a rubber stamp of Sweeney policy. But this book leaves plenty of room for considering what the structure and policies of unions should be for the coming century that will enhance and protect the economic lives of working people.

              5 out of 5 stars A book for the "rank-and-file".......1999-07-05

              It's about time a book is out that provides a view from the wokers themselves. It was refreshing to hear from the "rank-and-file" that unionism is the way American must go if there is going to be a working-class view of America. But most important was the underlying view that the American Labor Movement needs internal democracy if is going to survive in the future. I recommend this book to any union member that has felt alientated by the union leadership. It's time that the leaders think of the memberhsip and not themselves.

              The days of lifelong careers are over and this book illustrates the angst that has arisen. Horrible jobs tolerated by seemingly powerless employees, who, often with humor, sometimes with genuine sabotage, lash out. Its a book with a deeper meaning; the reason this country is weakening is because workers just dont care anymore. Ever had a lousy job? Nasty boss? This book will delight and fulfill your deepest jobsite fantasies!

              I don't know why the person from Wisconsin gave this only one star; I bet s/he's an executive of a corporation that doesn't want its employees to form unions. Anyhow, this is a very good book. It uses several excellent examples to illustrate points and remains interesting throughout, but never gets into an overly-preachy "Michael Moore" mode. It's a shame there aren't more books on this particular subject. The chapter on drug testing should make anyone who is jealous of their privacy cringe. It could be a little more in-depth, but as scholarship on this subject is rare, it's rather valuable nonetheless.

              This book was not very good at all. The author can't seem to go more than a few pages without intejecting some vulgarity, and the side bar stories are sometimes just plain cruel. I would not recommend this book to anyone who was looking for information on the state of the workplace today. Save your money.

              Bosses behaving badly, company policies that are clearly illegal, work environments that OSHA is unaware of and true stories of incompetant management (is there any other kind) and executives that have no clue.

              You are not alone.

              This book vindicates the hard workers of America. We're not whiners. We ARE being treated with little respect equally by employers around this once great nation. Where once you recieved a gold watch for loyalty and dedication of years at job, now your 'Thank you' is an early retirement package or top management (CIO's, CEO's, VP's, EVP's) who cash in their stocks with your 401k money, bankrupt the company, collect their millions and leave you with nothing.

              You think Enron was alone in this behavior?
              Used to be postal employees killing people...now ANY employees are. Why? Read this book. It explains partially why, inbetween the lines.

              Excellent book, full of information.... From the cover and title, one might assume this is a rather jokey and lighthearted book, but it is actually a well-researched and very well-written overview of problems plaguing the working poor and working middle-class in America now. That's not to say it isn't pretty damn funny in spots, too, though in a cringing in kind of way.

              Generally, this is a good "starter book" for anyone wanting to open a Voice Studio. It is however, target marketed to the average business novice.. who has very little business skills. If you are already operating a studio, and have done so for quite a while, then i would not suggest it. Furthermore, it only addresses Classical/Oratorio/Art song repertiore. No additional focus on contemporary music or contemporary musical theatre (which is a LARGE portion of singing students today.) Still, if you are a graduate starting out - looking for basic, yet good ideas... this is a good book to start. Still, beautifully written and Joan's chapter on 'vocal techniques' is worth buying the book - for that chapter alone.

              5 out of 5 stars Covers the logistical aspects of being a voice teacher.......2007-07-05


              Joan Frey Boytim has had a distinguished career as a private voice teacher. Rather than a manual of how to teach singing, this handbook covers more of the logistical concerns about teaching voice -- where and how to establish a studio, how to teach voice students sight reading, how to establish a curriculum approach, organize recitals, and other concerns.

              Most voice teachers will find this type of manual valuable. This is because while most voice majors study the ins and outs of the instrument and pedagogical approaches, very little focus is placed in education on how to organize one's teaching ability into an effective vocation. Boytim's suggestions, while simple at times, can be quite helpful. For instance, when first building a studio, Boytim suggests one teach beginning piano (or any other instrument teachers play) as well as voice in order to fill a studio. Non-voice students can be phased out of the studio as the number of voice students grows.

              Boytim also provides an immensely helpful method of teaching sight-singing quickly and relatively effectively. Her literature recommendations are also very sound for young singers. Some of the volumes Boytim recommends have been compiled, of course, by herself, but I highly doubt she's in it for the money. I've used one of her books for baritones and found it to contain many songs which were both entertaining and of musical substance.

              Critics may note that Boytim doesn't see much value in taking on students who aren't there to learn and who are "just there to hear themselves sing." While philosophical differences between teaching styles are common, I think voice teachers with a divergent view can easily read those passages with a grain of salt and move on to the more helpful sections. Boytim does have a significant section on figuring out how to comply with U.S. tax law, so voice teachers outside of the 50 states may find the book less helpful.

              For the voice teacher within the United States, however, this book has the potential to be an enormous resource. I strongly recommend it.

              I really enjoyed this book and have found it extremely helpful. I have been teaching for about 7 years but have only fairly recently had an extremely full teaching schedule with students ranging in age from 7 years to about 48 years.
              I think that since reading this book and putting many of Ms Boytims ideas on teaching the student to read the music, my pupils are improving more rapidly. I enjoy the exercises she has written out and have been using many of her repertoire volumes for a while.
              I find the book has helped me to structure my lessons in a more meaningful way.
              The style of this book is very easy to read, it is written almost informally so is really easy to understand.
              I disagree that it is only useful to people who live in the USA as I live in South Africa and find it extremely useful.
              I would stronly recommend any singing teacher purchase this book although it is slanted towards the classical approach to voice training.

                                  I am disappointed with this book.

                                  The first complaint is that it doesn't include the IPod Video, yet it sells itself as having the latest information.

                                  The second complaint is that it includes way too much information on previous generations of IPods. I don't care about first and second generation controls and think this information just makes it harder to get through the book.

                                  The third complaint is that there isn't very much information that you don't get from just using the IPod. In about ten minutes, you know what the menu options are and it isn't terribly hard to figure out how to select a playlist, for example. I was hoping for more in-depth information like cool things to do with the hard disk without having to go through ITunes.

                                  The basic problem I have with this book is that it's trying to be the missing manual, conveniently leaving out the kind of access that Apple doesn't really want you have. If it didn't include so much information on previous generations of the IPod, it might have been a decent manual. Now its all the manuals shoved together.

                                  Since Apple doesn't include an iPod manual for us older generation linear types who actually like to read the instructions, this book will do fine. Like most computer books it's a bit padded out, but it gave me the information I wanted.
