Book Description
Based on interviews with 125 prison workers and participant observation, this in-depth study examines the prison worker's world as a foundation for a theory of social control. By analyzing the intricate relations among the workers themselves rather than among the prisoners, Barbara Owen posits that social control arises through the combination of interaction, power, and meaning. Owen argues that the motives of workers are practical, rather than pathological as suggested by earlier research. She focuses her study on the social context of the prison shop floor--challenging the accepted idea that prison work is difficult because of the prisoners. The findings indicate that the problems of the prison workers are structurally induced and arise from interaction with co-workers rather than with prisoners.

Brian Scaddans guides to the IEE Wiring Regulations have established themselves as an industry standard. This new edition will be an essential reference for all contractors, technicians and other professionals working in a supervisory capacity, as well as newcomers to the industry, all of whom are involved in designing and testing electrical installations, and need to ensure their work complies with the latest version of the Wiring Regulations.
This text provides an understanding of basic design criteria and calculations, along with current inspection and testing requirements in electrical installation, and is written specifically for the City & Guilds 2400 vocational award. The new edition is updated throughout to match the 2004 version of BS 7671:2001 (incorporating Amendments 1:2002 & 2:2004), and also features extended coverage of Special Locations (such as bathrooms, construction sites and computer/data type installations). There are common misconceptions in the application of the Wiring Regulations in these areas with regard to bonding, voltages, disconnection times and sizes of earthing conductors. Brian Scaddan clarifies the requirements, and outlines the correct procedures to follow (and those to avoid!).
Brian Scaddan is the Chief Examiner for the City & Guilds 2391 vocational award. He has 30 years experience in Further Education, and is now Director of Brian Scaddan Associates, Engineering Training Consultants.
* New edition covers additional essential information on Special Locations, clarifying common misconception in the application of Wiring Regulations in these areas
* Fully in line with the 2004 version of BS 7671:2001 (incorporating Amendments 1:2002 & 2:2004), and matched to the City & Guilds 2400 Vocational award

Book Description
Why do countries come together in regions? Why do some regions succeed? Are regions economic or political tools, for development or for negotiation?
At the 1996 EADI Conference, the papers presented in the World Trade and Trade Policy workshop looked at the new trends in regionalism from a variety of points of view for different institutions. They were searching for the effects of regions, for their implications for policy and performance in the developing countries and for international economic institutions, and trying to interpret them in terms of economic and political theory.
It is too early to reach structured conclusions. The regions are too new, and evidence on their success and their effects is still limited. Three conclusions start to emerge: there is some evidence for a more widespread interest in formal regional organisations, although these are taking too wide a range of forms to be treated as a single phenomenon. The general analyses and comparisons of regions suggest that studying trade motives and effects is not enough; regionalism is a political decision, although some of the individual studies find significant economic effects. Other forces and influences in international relations remain important, and cut across regional interests.

Book Description
The twin processes of integration and fragmentation have been the distinguishing features of contemporary globalization. Nowhere is this more strikingly evident than in Asia Pacific.
This first volume of a two-volume study concentrates on the geopolitical and economic transformation of Asia Pacific. Specifically it focuses on the relationship between the decline of ideological bipolarity and dissolution of Cold War alliances on the one hand and the rapid industrialization of East Asia and the tensions generated by the shifts in the global and regional balance of economic interests on the other.
Particular attention is devoted to the three major powers (the United States, China and Japan) and to a number of small and middle powers in particular Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Australia and Canada. Underpinning the entire analysis is the complex interplay of geopolitics, economy and culture.
States, Markets and Civil Society in Asia Pacific is essential reading for scholars and researchers of Asia Pacific politics and economy. The coherent analysis will also ensure the books appeal to those in NGOs and government agencies affected by, or working in, the region.

Funny..Informative...and Sometimes Moving.......2005-06-03
I agree with some of the reviews that this book exploits stereotypes at times, but for the most part it is quite funny. I laughed heartily as the Author listed "10 Things NOT to say to your Mother when Coming Out." They list 10 "Musts" CD's and movies and even mention that the gay-rights movement began with Judy Garland's death. The inclusion of "Where the Boys Are" ( a listing of places to go to meet men) is dated and not always accurate. Still an enjoyable read
Lent it out and never saw it again..........2004-03-29
I first bought this hilarious book in 1995 at the UBC bookstore, and its humour helped me through a difficult time. Having grown up in small-town Alberta, I had always associated being openly gay with shame and fear, but this book light-heartedly revealed a world I had no idea of (remember, this was pre-Internet time and there were no bookstores with gay and lesbian literature sections.)
I read it several times before lending it to a friend, and both were soon long gone. I've been looking for it ever since and just today I chanced upon it here and immediately ordered it.
A Little too Close to be Funny.......2001-04-01
A laughing friend thrust this book into my hands, saying that it had really made him laugh. I took it home, and sat down with it, and started to chuckle. But by the end of the book, I wasn't laughing nearly as much as I thought I would.
Here's the deal: It's not really all that funny, because although it's right on the nose and pokes a lot of fun at our own gay ideosyncracies, the book is also showing just how shallow, lacking, and fundamentally messed up gay culture is.
Now, I'm certainly not going to say that this wasn't a pleasure to read, it just left me with a melancholy feeling: Gosh, isn't it sad that we're pretty much just a joke. It was fun, but sometimes bitter, light, but sometimes kind of mean, this book seems to adeptly sum up the so-called gay culture: Laughable, but not all that funny sometimes, and very often pretty damned sad and lacking in self-esteem.
Whimsical and true to life too........2000-06-10
Delightful, expert mixing of deadpan-style narration and photographs. Thoughtfully-written work is another fabulous creative triumph for gay and lesbian brethren. I recommend "...Living The Lifestyle" for skeptical "straight" folks as a great ice-breaker, conversation-starter, and laugh-inducer. So much in book sounds "true to life", e.g., beginning and ending relationships in tongue-in-cheek manner. Just seeing the cover of this book always brings a genuine smile to my 37-year-old face. Carefree guy.
Stereotypes? Yes! But that is why it's so funny!.......2000-04-22
This book picks out every possible gay stereotype and really analyzes it. The result is complete and utter humor, but it really gets you thinking. Why are we the way we are? And you know what... who cares? I'm proud to be me!
The explanations really make sense and even though its all in jest, you do wish some of it were true. The cartoons and the lists are to die for! The pictures of the gay facial expressions and the guide to "gay types!" AHH! It really is a handbook.

Customer Reviews:
Dollars ... and the salesmen who love them........2006-10-16
This book, and its sister publication is fantastic, if you want to be Ray Kroc, and attempt to get rich franchising your cookie cutter product. The book describes very little about the actual methodology of performance, and focuses with laser precision on the mechanisms of salesmanship. The author rides high in the saddle, and rules over all the "bottom feeders" she surveys. This is the type of mentality I would think one who aspired to individual artistic expression, and freedom would want to avoid. Conform or be cast out. The content is concise, and informative in its own self righteous, conformist, and calculating way.
Great book for any experience level.......2005-11-13
I have been djing about 5 years and want to take my business to the next step. This book is full of all kinds of information that I can use now, not abstract ideas that would work in theory. I could not put it down I just wanted to keep learning. Some of the ideas I have already started to implement. Can't wait to read the DJ Sales and Marketing Book. A MUST READ
Required Reading for DJ's.......2005-11-06
This handbook leads you step by etep into the world of pro DJ's. Follow every word and you can't miss making your business into the power leader in your area. I worked the pages and now I have quit my job and do this fulltime very successfully. Thanks a billion, Stacey!
Lots of advice.......2003-12-24
I got this book when I didn't know anything about DJing. I read every page of the book, and it was fantastic! It was just filled with tips and advice for anyone who wanted to get into DJing. For example, it says some of the equipment you'd need to buy to be a mobile, different games you can play at weddings and bar/bat mitzvahs, how to get the crowd moving, and much more.
Evolving The MDJ Industry.......2003-12-16
"Stacy Zemon is a knowledgeable source on being a pro mobile DJ. She is also a veteran of the industry who has contributed much to its evolution."

Book Description
When pressed to name the most influential musician of the 20th century, many music historians will name Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. Born in New Orleans in 1901 and recording into the 1970s, Armstrong is known as the father of jazz, the one figure most credited with moving the Western world from the age of classical music and Tin Pan Alley pop standards into an exciting new era of swing and hot jazz. Michael Meckna's book is the authoritative reference on Armstrong. Alphabetically arranged entries give detailed information on the many aspects of Armstrong's life and music. An appendix of CD releases includes entries that detail the record company, date of issue, song list, and performer list. Other appendices include a chronology, a list of movies, and a resource guide to "Satchmo on the Web"; a bibliography offers yet another useful tool for fans and students of Armstrong's life and music. A selection of black-and-white photos completes the volume. Sample entries: "Accentuate the Positive"; "Adam and Eve Had the Blues"; "After You've Gone"; "Ain't It the Truth"; "Ain't Misbehavin'"; "Alabamy Bound"; "Alexander's Rag Time Band"; "Alligator Crawl"; "Ba-Ba-Bo-ZET!"; Back o' Town; Bailey, Buster; Bailey, Calvin; Bailey, Pearl (May); Baker, Josephine; Balanchine, George; Baldwin, James; Bankhead, Tallulah; Baraka, Amiri.

The best.......2006-07-11
I am 12 and i got this book when i was 10. I learned much of the basics and went on and learned even more of the art of juggling. i can now do a diablo use tricky sticks and juggle clubs rings and balls and scarves. for adults and kids alike this is a must get for anyone learning how to juggle
Good Reference Book for Inspiring Jugglers.......2004-10-09
This is an acceptable book for beginners who can learn through reading. It does an adequate job of teaching the basics through illustrations. It also provides instruction for variations of juggling including: cigar boxes, devil sticks, hats and plate spinning.
Great examples of how to be a successful juggler........2003-12-13
This is a huge book. It's over 500 pages. If you do not know how to juggle, I wouldn't buy this book. I would reccomend that you get Juggling for the Complete Klutz first. Then, once you master that book, then buy this book. Although it doesn't give very detailed instructions on how to do the tricks, it kind of encourages creativity by letting the reader interpret the illustrated diagrams how they want and possibly coming up with their own tricks based on the ones described in the book so each juggler that learns from this book will have their own individual style.
The book has sections on juggling balls, clubs, devil sticks, diablo, cigar boxes, and many others. It also includes a section on old Vaudeville tricks that could be performed, and another section on how to make money from juggling and how to put on a really good show.
I have had this book for years, and I'd say I haven't mastered half of the stuff in it yet.
It's great!
the worst juggling book I own.......2000-07-09
If I ever meet a person who has learned to juggle using this book alone then I will shake his hand and name him as the most single minded, dedicated, fanatical juggler in the country. This book is almost useless as a tutor of juggling....it may interest people in juggling and show them some of the things that are possible, but it will not teach them how to do it themselves. The author tries to teach all aspects of juggling and fails - for each chapter in the book a book of similar size could be easily written without exahausting the subject. The author shows the trick but doesn't show you the mechanics of actually learning the trick for yourself. If a complete beginner were to start learning using this book then their attempts would end in frustration... it doesn't give a true impression of the difficulty of learning the tricks, some of which would take a juggler years of practice to build up to - if they ever get that far. so, I conclude by saying that if you are looking to learn to juggle don't bother with this book (juggling for the complete klutz is a good gentle introduction, or the encyclopaedia of ball juggling for an idea of what is possible and a realistic view of how much work it takes to learn certain tricks) and that if you are interested in learning a particular type of juggling (eg. balls, clubs, devil sticks, diablo) then buy a book that specifically deals with that apparatus and be prepared to practice!
All the steps from Beginner to Beginner+ !.......2000-04-27
This book cover only the VERY basic concepts of juggling. I have lots of juggling books, and this is not one of the best. If you want to learn how to juggle 3 balls to start with, get a book on ball juggling. If you want to learn another thing, get a book on that one thing. This book misses what is sets out to do - learn you to go from a beginner juggler to a professional one. One of the few books I've bought that really disappointed me. In addition, the instructions on HOW to do the tricks are not good enough. After all, you want to LEARN YOURSELF these tricks, don't you? Yes, and not only KNOW ABOUT THEM.

An Excellent Resource.......2000-07-23
This is the book that I turn to when I want to learn something new. It is not the best "Learn to Juggle" book, but if you can already juggle, this book will push you to the next level.
This book just expects you to want to learn how to juggle 5 pins, or learn complicated passing routines.
The coverage complete, but brief. There isn't a lot of hand holding, but covers a lot of ground.
Comprehensive, great book on juggling.......2000-04-04
I have had this book for the last 10 years, and it is well-worn. It has been very useful in helping me refine my club juggling, devil stick, and ball juggling skills. The diagrams are well drawn, and Finnigan also provides hints for when things go wrong.
He goes into details other books skip over (such as color-changing rings) and cigar box juggling.
My only complaint is that this book isn't indexed, so you have to rely on the Table of Contents to search for stuff.
All in all, I highly recommend this book.
Book Description
If you have experience with C++ and DirectX and have always wanted to program your own game, this is the book for you. Programming a Multiplayer FPS in DirectX takes you from the basic game design to a fully functioning game! All of the source code, assets, and tools are included- you just work through the tutorial-based chapters and watch the game come to life as you develop it. And as new features are added, you can begin playing with them to see them in action. Following a typical game development process, the book is separated into two distinct parts: Part One focuses on the design and development of the game engine, and Part Two concentrates on putting the game together using the engine. The theory has been kept to a minimum, so that you are following a hands-on approach and adding new functionality to your engine as you proceed. In the first part, you'll learn about the many facets of DirectX, C++, and object-oriented programming. You'll also learn how to design the engine and put the infrastructure into place. The next chapters will each add a new module to your engine including input, scripting, 3D rendering, sound, networking, and scene management. The second part covers the final development stages, including everything from game play to player management; it culminates with the complete multiplayer FPS game. Throughout the book you'll learn key topics that will bring you up to speed with industry proven techniques, while improving your confidence as a developer. And because DirectX is the most prevalent game development tool available, once you master this project, you'll have the skills you need to create a variety of games!

Godd introduction, complete coverage.......2007-09-11
In general I'm very pleased with the book "Programming a multiplayer FPS in directX". It provides a very nice introduction on how to approach the task of building a complex 3d application for user with basic knowledge of C(++) and DirectX. Structured programming is important! It is nice that one has such a concrete result at the end of the book. The only drawback is that it could have a little more in depth treatment of certain areas, but hey, it is already almost 500 pages :)
Interesting book; good analysis.......2007-07-24
At my school we used this book for our networking class. (I had been begging our teacher to show us some directPlay stuff... yes, I'm aware that directPlay is ugh in terms of networking, but, it was a lot better than learning some java networking stuff. At least to me).
This book was an invaluable tool for designing my networking system. I basically gutted this networking system and stacked on some variable size packets that I studied from one of the Lamothe (actual author:Todd Baron ) books. (weird book, guy talks about his exploits in ultimate online for like, almost a chapter before he goes on to explain about how you can hack the networking system for exploits.
This book shows you how to implement a peer to peer network and then treat it like a server/client system. It's an interesting (I chose to just go strictly peer-to-peer in my system) approach. And I read in one of the Game Programming Gems a way to bypass some of the connectivity issues with peer to peer networks.
Regardless, this book is an EXCELLENT study of networking for games. I read the networking chapter probably 20x during our project and it took me quite a while to figure out exactly what he was doing with it. In the end, it's a logical system that works fairly decently.
We didn't use the rest of the code in the book too much. Some of the other people in my class modified the FPS game to do other things (made a shooting gallery, other's made some text based games on the networking code, etc).
The source code is useful and there is an update available for it (his precious linked list had a memory leak in it... he really harps on about it).
If you have never designed a game system before. This book is going to be a tremendous help. It teaches a bit about design patterns without all the unnecessary mumbo-jumbo, and how they directly relate to game programming and how they're useful (helloooo singleton).
The code is in visual studio 6 I believe, and you have to set the default project to the actual project and not the engine to get it to run. Also, if your hardware doesn't support hardware vertex buffers (you have integrated graphics, we had a couple people on the team with this issue) you have to change one of the directX intializers to something else to account for this (can't remember the call now, look at some other directX init calls from somewhere else and you can find it).
He goes into quite a bit of detail about each topic and the basics, and then delves down into the design of each system. It's very methodical and well thought out. AND YOU GET SOMETHING WORKING AT THE END!
Do not get this book if:
You are new to C++(you better have a CRYSTAL clear understanding of pointers and OOP, classes etc).
You are not interested in engine design.
You hate directX, or directPlay.
You hate max; he uses 3dsMax to make the scene files etc.
You are an industry professional that has a basic understanding of how a game engine works. This is definitely a n00b book.
You expect to get your hand completely held at each step. He does skip over some details that are easily discovered if you delve a little into the MSDN or any other online resource.
Get this book if:
You are incredibly interesting in engine design and want to get your feet wet; as well as learn some engine design in the process.
You're interested in any of the systems this book covers ( I can really only attest to the networking system, and that he uses directPlay, which is in sunset mode).
Interested in basic modular programming and looking to expand the code in the book to meet your needs or to experiment with. It is an incredibly useful base to start with.
Are extremely comfortable in c++/directX and are interested in expanding your knowledge and it's applications into games.
Overall, the book was a good purchase and is an excellent stepping stone into engine design. It has been very useful in my future projects since I've used this book in my course work.
Useful book, really bad FPS game.......2007-02-05
I've enjoyed reading this book. It effectively shows you how to write a very basic first person shooter in directx. Well done. It briefly introduces rendering, a simple scripting system, peer-to-peer networking, handling user input, scene management, collision detection, sound effects, and more. Not bad. The code is fine, I had no problems compiling it in VS2005 (check the authors website for the latest code though) and I learned a lot from reading the book and going through the code. In short, I am glad to have bought and read this book and I do recommend it to others.
The book does have some drawbacks though. I feel that the actual game that is built in this book is embarrasingly bad. The networking system, rendering system, user interface, and everything else about it are bare-bones functional, but certainly not good enough that you'd want to encorporate them into your own game. I suppose that the thought is that you should first learn to build a Yugo before you learn to build a Ferrari, but personally I'd rather just learn to build the ferrari right off the bat :) Oh, and why must the graphics suck so badly? I realize that it doesn't necessarily impact the goal of learning the various topics, but seriously, how hard would it have been to at least provide a decent character model, or some decent textures and lighting and so forth?
One last thing. The book assumes a familiarity with C++ and to a lesser extent with Directx, so if you are brand new to either of those, the book will be pretty challenging to follow.
Man does this book suck!.......2006-07-13
This book is terrible! You read through the whole thing, and you don't even learn anything!
I would strongly recommend people not to buy this book.
Otherwise, you just wasted 30 dollars on worthless bs.
Good but not perfect.......2006-07-05
This book gives the reader a good general understanding of how networked gameprogramming works, and also a good bit of information about the internals of a complete game engine. The downside about this book is that it uses mixed hardware/software vertex processing which results in noncompatable programs with my laptop, however, if you change that to only software and recompile every demo then it works greate (A setting in CreateDevice()...), but slow (on my laptop...),, the occlusion checks ain't the best, and the partitioning on load is slow,, slow as in - you cant augment the code for profiling or it will be runnig for more then 15 minutes on a 1.03GHz laptop... ("more then" due to the fact that i aborted it....) and the use of 3DsMAX files as levelmodels... and the occlusions based not on the real environement but on objects placed in the scene.. (invisible...)...
Except the minor none-perfect things this book is GREATE!!! AND a BIG NOTE: The minors noted above ain't to bad,, it just looks like much when it's writen down,, and I think that this book is a good read for everyone,, and I do REALY recomend it... however, i give it 4 of 5 due to the recomile things and the occlusion,,, however, this book ain't about perfekt rendering,, it's about connection a game to the internet :)... and it gives you MORE then plenty :)
