Success does not equal happiness........2006-08-05
I read in one of the Harvard Business Review Journal series how people learn best by reading or listening. Most are a combination of both but we all tend to one side or the other. If your a listener and your ready for a life change then you owe it to yourself to listen to these disks. They are mesmerizing and refreshing. So much of career books and tapes today are all about setting goals, listing accomplishments, competeing, negotiating, conquering. I think a reflection of our culture in America. The success oriented approach may get you a great paying job but will it make you happy? When I first started listening to Rick I tried to understand what his main point was. And this is what I came up with - success does not equal happiness. Not writing down goals, wandering, following a whim, getting lost in a project that has no apparent meaning or rational may be the beginning of something magnificent. That is not a quote just some added thoughts about the audio book. Thanks Rick.
Alternative to Conventional "Job Hunting".......2003-08-16
Rick Jarow provides a much-needed alternative to the conventional "write a winning resume" and "knock 'em dead in your job interview" approach to finding a livelihood. Most career seekers are told to HUNT for a job -- i.e., use the hunter-gatherer model to find a position that just happens to be open at the specific time you are looking for a job. Once you've bagged yourself a job, then you are expected to mold yourself to fit the parameters your new employer wants you to fit into. Jarow advocates an more organic approach where finding a job is an outgrowth of creating a life that is right for you. As you associate with people/organizations whose values resonate with you, you will eventually connect with people who can steer you towards work that fits YOU. It is the difference between showing off a series of stuffed, mounted trophies on a wall as opposed to a lush, colorful garden you've cultivated yourself to represent your life's work.

I bought "Creating the Work You Love" about a year ago. It clicked with me. He's writing for people who come to life from a spiritual perspective, and have grown fairly skillful at that side of life, but are awkwardly deficient in the nitty gritty of reality. Jarow understands that the nitty gritty is also spiritual, and so he approaches the good old question of jobs and career from a wise and spiritual place, plucking examples inspirations from both Eastern and Western ancient traditions (although he organizes the process through the system of the chakras), but also from history and popular culture and his own life and counseling practice.
But I had a hard time focusing on the book. It's full of meditation exercises, which can be hard to take from text into meditation. Also, I never felt like I was sufficiently "done" with a chapter--after all, when have you ever done enough connecting to "abundance"? So I would recommend the audio tapes over the book.You can listen to it again and again, focused and meditating deeply, or absentmindedly, or in a more rationally conscious state. It speaks to all three states.
Personally, I know where I want to be in, say, five years. But I'm still struggling and dragging my feet about the short term necessities. And Jarow's approach helps connect the unglamorous aspects of the job search with the nourishing and challenging spiritual work that I'm more comfortable with.
EXCELLENT.......2003-01-28
Rick brings out excellent points about how our circumstances, household, upbringing etc affect our lives and our thought process. He brings out very well how our complex thoughts, our anxieties, apprehension, fear, perplexity, dissatisfaction in professional lives may affect our personal lives as well. With excellent example from his own life he explains how all these feelings may eventually agitate a person so much that they decide to take up career changes He has done an excellent job in non-conventional career counseling. Overall the set of cassettes are extremely mesmerizing.

I've felt stuck for quite a while now and anti-career tapes have opened me up. The guided imagery exercises are great--I made many discoveries along the way (I really enjoyed listening to his soothing voice, too!) Initially, I thought the chakra component was too New-Age-y for me, but to my surprise, I'm moving forward with less fear, and I really believe that "aligning" the chakras, as Rick suggests has helped a lot.
I have much respect for any author who can draw from many religious and spiritual traditions, as Rick Jarow does. The material he presents is intelligent, compelling, and practical.

Absurdly overpriced!.......2007-04-18
My worst investment in BW books so far. It is not more than a pamphlet, with very low quality figures (print screens almost impossible to read).
I expected much more from the price I paid.

OK, so size isn't everything. But for the price of this A5 pamphlet, you could buy an encyclopedia sized book on the same subject.
Don't think the bigger books are competition for this one, though. They're designed for people who want to learn a subject and are prepared to put the time and effort in to do so; the target market for this comic is the kind who just want to parrot off answers in an interview.

iffy at best.......2005-03-02
This review book is helpful in that it gives you a lot of background information to study, such as pages of prefixes and suffixes. Unfortunately, they didn't double-check the answers in the practice exams- I've found 2 errors so far in the first practice exam alone. My advice would be to purchase the book, and study it, but don't take the exams- they'll only confuse you as to which answer is truly correct.

The material progressed in a logical order, and was very understandable. I have experience with Microsoft BackOffice products, but I learned Proxy Server via Kevin's ONSITE book, and was able to configure Web access through a cable modem for 125 client seats. I recommend this for anyone wanting to understand Proxy Server 2.0, and be able to apply the knowledge practically.

Rick is the man.......2007-07-12
I took from Rick while I attended Berklee - he is the man...period. His classes/lessons were based on this book (he was writing it while I attended) and it really gives you the tools you need to become your own person behind the kit. This will make you a better player with a larger vocabulary. I am always trying to come up with new ways to apply the rudiments. Now - you can have Rick's class without the Berklee tuition - however, Rick's humor is worth the price of the credit hour alone. He sets you straight...and this book will set you straight too.
Creative Use of Rudiments for Drumset.......2007-05-16
Its a great book with a low price that gives you lots of ideas on how the standard drum rudiments can be applied to the drumset. The basic rudiments are all listed here of course, and then each one is broken down into grooves and moves that are applied to the whole drumset. For example, it shows you how to take the double stroke roll and open it up on all the tom-toms and not just the snare drum. It wont hurt to check it out and have it in your library, as I am sure I learnt a few new things from it.
Really good!.......2006-08-25
I like this book Rudiment Grooves for Drum Set. After practicing some of these grooves, it has tightened up my playing. I've been playing for several years and my biggest weakness is drum fills. These grooves based on the drum rudiments gave me a library of drum fills to play when the music calls for it. The most significant thing this book offers is that not only does it teach you the groove but it teaches you how to play them in time making them sound musical thereby tightening up your sound on the drums. In order to fully appreciate what the book has to offer, you really have to practice these grooves until they become second nature to you. Once I got the grooves down, it just simply made my drum playing sound more mature. Thanks, Rick Considine, for your contribution to the drum world of music.

This book is ok. It has SOME Rudiment based grooves, but not nearly as much as I had hoped for. Most of the book deals with fills more than it does grooves or beats. The number of rudiments applied is also sort of limited.
As an intermediate drummer looking to take it up a notch, the book fell short for me.
Going back to the basics--or: less is more.......2005-10-03
I found the material in this book to be extremely helpful. I first practiced the 26 Rudiments for a week or so, then began working on the excercises daily. Honestly, I discovered that by going back to the basics (the rudiments) I was able to play more efficiently, maintain a beter groove, and provide a great deal more feeling when playing.

Book Description
Take A Look At A Good Book is the third book in a series. The popular features of the two earlier books, Have Some Sums to Solve and At Last!! Encoded Totals, Second Addition, have been retained in Take A Look At A Good Book. The thirty-eight puzzles presented in Section 1, along with the cover, dedication, and preface puzzles, all fall into the special subcategory of additive alphametics. Each of their sums has a unique decoding, sometimes insured by the imposition of an initial condition.
Within the subcategory, two varieties of alphametics are include— the ideal, doubly-true type (abbreviated "i.d.t.") and the narrative type. In the former, all ten digits appear in the solution and a mathematically correct addition example results when the problem is read aloud. Directed approaches to each of the puzzles are offered in Section 2. These strategic outlines enable the solver to skirt around pitfalls and obstacles without removing the challenge associated with the quest for the actual answer.
In Section 3, solutions to all puzzles are given. The order of presentation of these solutions is intentionally different from that of the puzzles. This section also contains responses to all queries raised within the context of the narrative alphametics.
The major difference between this and the two earlier works is the prevalence here of "wider" i.d.t.s, wherein the sums span nine or more columns.

One of the most simple and enjoyable problems in mathematics are the doubly-true alphametics. These are problems that are a combination of words that make up a correct expression in a language as well as a valid arithmetic operation when the letters are uniquely replaced by digits. The name of the book is an alphametic, where the title
TAKE + A + LOOK + AT + A + GOOD = BOOK
yields the solution
3895 + 8 + 1009 + 83 + 8 + 2006 = 7009
among others.
The author is the reigning expert in alphametics, having been the editor of the alphametics column of Journal of Recreational Mathematics for many years. This book is a collection of some of the best problems that Kahan has created or encountered over the years. The problems are not hard, simply requiring knowledge of basic algebra and a little tenacity to solve them. If you enjoy mathematical puzzles, then this is a book that will interest you.

Great Book. The autor balances theory and practice perfectly. I just build a WISP from the scratch. I wouldn't be able to do this as fast and good as I did without the help of Mr. Unger's book.

This book is a very good reference and starting point to examine the Wireless ISP business. The only problem I have with this book is that it is outdated. I knew that before I bought it. I recommend this book and it is easy to follow along.

As an owner of a mid sized WISP, the author has captured the real life problem we experience both from a strategic and field perspective. From antenna alternatives, pros and cons of varying polarization, business issues to consider and multitudes of other factors that must be balanced to support a customer service organization delivering wireless internet services. Thanks! My entire staff was required to read this book cover to cover.

This is the best book in the wireless industry. A very easy read, Deploying License Free Wireles Wide Area Networks is laid out in a manner that builds upon the information from earlier chapters. Jack is very thorough in the information presented. Jack's book includes everything from the basics of the physics of microwave propogation, designing your wireless network infrastruce, doing site surveys, choosing wireless network equipment and antenna selection. For layperson and professional alike, every reader is sure to benefit from the vast knowledge Jack presents in this book.

If you are interested in a wireless Wide Area network then this is the book for you. Novices to experts will get a comprehensive detailed explanation of how to implement wireless wide area networks. From the definitions to the diagrams and equations detailing what is needed, where to place it, how it works and how to troubleshoot it to keep it running, Mr. Unger has covered it all. He is direct and to the point in giving you useful information on site surveying, antenna evaluation, selecting equipment, installing outdoor wireless systems, solving noise and interference problems, internet access.
