Book Description
Between 1802 and 1902, over 2000 Irish emigrants, mainly Catholics from Ulster, relocated to northern Delaware, where they found steady employment in E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company's black powder yards. Explosives work was dangerous, but the du Ponts, perhaps best described as sincere paternalists, provided a host of benefits, including assisted migration, free or low-cost housing, interest-bearing savings accounts, and widows' pensions. As a result, the Irish remained loyal to their employers, convinced by their everyday experiences that their interests and the du Ponts' were one and the same.
These generally peaceable labor relations underscore Mulrooney's innovative exploration of cultural identity. Employing a wide array of sources, she turns away from worksite and instead turns to the domestic sphere as, "broadly defined to include everything from labor relations, emigration patterns, religious beliefs, and gender roles to attitudes about housing, consumer goods, yards, and foodways." Her research reveals that powder mill families asserted their distinctive ethno-religious heritage at the same time as they embraced what U.S. capitalism had to offer.

A UNIQUE COFFEE TABLE ADDITION.......2007-01-11
This nice large book may not be the stuff that you typically find on coffee tables, but it deserves to be. Mr. Black's stories and thoughts are snippets of life that lend themselves to being read more than once versus shelved away. They are short enough to read in a few minutes and could just become one of your "daily devotions".
Real cowboy humor, by a real cowboy.......2000-06-27
Great book -- the kind that you like to sit in front of a fire and enjoy slowly... Baxter Black is tremendous -- first heard him on National Public Radio and didn't have a clue that he wrote Cowboy Poetry.. Note, if your'e a real cowboy -- someone who's done Rodeo in the chutes (not spectating), ranched, roped then you'll REALLY enjoy the book cause the humor is sharp and dead on target... Good poems about Roping, hiring onto an outfit, you-name-it... Black calls himself a "cattle feeder" and a 'sorry team roper' -- if you know what either of these mean, then do yourself a favor an order the book now... My favorite is the $35 rope poem about team roping -- how you get started with a $35 rope and end up spending $15,000 on your 'team roping' hobby...
Perfectly crafted cowboy poetry, truckloads of funny.......1999-10-13
Baxter Black has a wonderful mastery of the English language, to hilarious effect. This book has classics such as "Ugly for Hire", "The Cowboy and His Date" and of course, "Croutons on a Cow Pie". Bax puts the cowboy life into lyrical, perfectly crafted snapshots for people to see the heart of the West and the people who live and work there. Get it, read it, love it.
Book Description
Authorized by the band, this is the inside story of U2's live career, from the very beginning to now-with more than 500 exclusive photos from the U2 archive, including many never-before-seen, behind-the-scenes shots.
Everything about U2 is huge-from their music to their tours to their influence on popular culture and politics worldwide. They are cultural icons as well as multimillion-album-selling pop stars.
Underpinning the band's popularity, from the beginning, is their passion for touring. For more than twenty years, U2 has been primarily a live band-hardly ever off the road. Performing live is what they love to do best. And it is their touring that defines their creativity and reflects the direction of the band. From the first bare-bones Tick Tock Tour of 1980 through the massive, seminal Joshua Tree and ZooTV tours of the eighties and nineties to the most recent, more intimate Elevation Tour of 2001, it is their live shows that have set U2's agenda.
For the first time, the band has agreed to chronicle this vital part of its creative energy. More than 500 photos from hundreds of performances have been handpicked from a twenty-five-year archive. Many of these photos are behind-the-scenes shots that have never been published before. The book includes commentary by Diana Scrimgeour, the official photographer on recent tours, as well as first-person accounts from band members, the core creative team, friends, and associates.
U2 Show is the music publishing event of 2004.

An excellent guide to the U2 show.......2006-12-05
I too picked this up at my library... and someone would have had to have wrenched it from my dead hands that day to have borrowed it over me... took it home, gave it a quick glance and purchased a copy online (also at a decent discount).
I agree with some of those other reviewers comments, after my copy having arrived I realised some of the pictures are not up to scratch... however, many, many of them are! I know U2 fans have high standards and expectations and, hey, I think there are many fans that could actually do a better job at shooting U2's concerts than the recent efforts like Chicago where you hardly got to see the stunning production / visuals that U2 put into their Vertigo tour at all. That said, there are many beautiful photos, behind the scene shots and others that you wont have seen before.
I LOVE a U2 show, and that's what they are, a show, of visual and auditory treats... I think this book captures that in its photography, however the real treat is in the commentary. They've interviewed people from lighting, staging and design, costumes, the road crew, graphics, and many other aspects that go into the production. What fan wouldnt be fascinated by the stories behind Bono's clothing like the Bubble Suits or the Fly and all of the other aspects that the band and the people they work with pay such incredible attention to detail with. All of which goes into making U2 look as good as they do. I watched the fascinating documentary about the making of Popmart and even after having seen the show, was floored by how much effort they placed into every detail of the production, how money, time and effort everyone involved put into creating a show that fans would love. And they don't have to, U2 could just as easily play on a simple stage and charge the same prices and people would come anyway. Some of the fascinating detail as to what goes on behind the scenes is in this book.
This is a great book for the fan of U2's concerts and at the prices offered here, a real bargain.
A Decent Show And Tell.......2006-06-21
The best photographically based U2 publication since BP Fallon's 1994 book Faraway, So Close!, U2 Show follows the Irish band moving from `70s pub gigs through to gargantuan stadium bills. Lovingly detailed with candid shots backstage, Bono's early scaffold climbing antics and images from their first Australian tour in 1984, U2 Show also comes up trumps with its notation by numerous crew who have worked the lights, checked the sound and designed the stage over the years. The testimonials by everyone from Brian Eno through to Anton Corbijn prove a strong family ethos has been present in U2's inner circle from the beginning. While the pages of reports from stage technicians and sound engineers can sometimes be a little heavy going at the tail end of this tome and there's more proofing errors than a quality official book like this should contain, there's plenty of insider information that will impress fans of Dublin's finest.
What was I thinking..?? UGH!!!.......2005-08-20
First time I looked through this book, was curiosity of my local library. Checked out, and was blown away with how cool this book is. That was 9 months ago.
Being a big U2 fan-and since the price had dropped considerably-decided to buy the book. After a few minutes of 'reading' it, realized how crappy the pictures in the book are. Seemes like 90-99% of the pictures are washed out, grainy, and horribly reproduced here. Was there any quality control as this book went to press? And for those 'new, never before seen pictures' they are pretty ho hum. Because its not totally horrid, I'd give it 2.5 stars. Just, well, disappointing. If I had to pay the full MSRP, I'd give it ZERO stars.
While I must say, for $14 or so, you do get some good training on how heavy your next laptop will be....
A beautiful and wonderful book.......2005-03-02
This is the kind of book that any U2 fan would treasure forever. It currently has pride of place on my bookshelf and I never tire of picking it up and looking at the marvellous photography or reading the fascinating and detailed articles that cover essentially every aspect of U2's touring history that you could ever wish to know. The depth of information is amazing and presents one of the most intriguing and vivid insights to date on the finest live band in the world. What's more, the price is exceptionally good for the quality of the product. I would have expected it to be at least double or triple the price.
If you are interested in U2 and haven't bought this book yet, do so now. You won't regret it.
Technically great.......2005-02-17
If you have any interest in what happens to make a U2 concert happen, by the crew members, designers, and band, this is the book for you. It is not only a backstage pass to most of U2's greatest tours, it is also a technical approach to a technical process. Pictures are pretty good too, but don;t purchase this book if you want some old photos from long-gone tours; buy this book if you want to read about the tours.
This would be a good book for someone interested in becoming a "roadie" or stage crew member, and all the like, for it talks a lot about how and why the tours were as they were. It will require a lot of reading, so don't thing it is a simple page turner.
If you love U2, want to know more about their tours, from the inside out, this book is for you. Get ready to read!

Book Description
Building on the work of Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin, Capitalizing on Culture presents an innovative, accessible, and timely exploration of critical theory in a cultural landscape dominated by capital. Despite the increasing prevalence of commodification as a dominant factor in the production, promotion, and consumption of most forms of mass culture, many in the cultural studies field have failed to engage systematically either with culture as commodity or with critical theory. Shane Gunster corrects that oversight, providing attentive readings of Adorno and Benjamin's work in order to generate a complex, non-reductive theory of human experience that attends to the opportunities and dangers arising from the confluence of culture and economics.
Gunster juxtaposes Benjamin's thoughts on memory, experience, and capitalism with Adorno's critique of mass culture and modern aesthetics to illuminate the key position that the commodity form plays in each thinker's work and to invigorate the dialectical complexity their writings acquire when considered together. This blending of perspectives is subsequently used to ground a theoretical interrogation of the comparative failure of cultural studies to engage substantively with the effect of commodification upon cultural practices. As a result, Capitalizing on Culture offers a fresh examination of critical theory that will be valuable to scholars studying the intersection of culture and capitalism.

Not Impressed.......2007-08-14
I have to say that, in my opinion, this is the worst of the TRO's I have seen. The mech designs are uninspired to say the least. Also, there was one primary artist doing the work for this TRO so a majority of the mechs all have the same "flavor," so to speak. What are the odds that the differect houses and the clans are all going to design mechs that look alike?
That being said, there are some designs that keep this TRO from being a complete loss...like the Hauptman and some of the classics redone as Clan upgrades.
I would only buy this if you HAVE to complete your TRO collection.
Customer Reviews:
Meh.......2004-09-13
Two years since the last review on TR3060.
Unless BattleTech introduces an entirely new facet to the game, the TR series will have to die out - there are only so many combinations of weapons and equipment available. There are a lot of "new" designs in the book, but any fan should notice that most are enhanced versions of earlier designs. The book's strength is in the fiction accompanying each design. The art is NOT that good, I wish it looked more like 3025 and 3058. Mind you, some of the designs do look good; most look God-Awful Stupid (TM).
It had it's moments.......2002-05-25
3060 was probably the worst technical readout made. The vehicles were interesting but the mech designs we're laughable. there were a few decent mechs such as the new viking for the IS as well as the nova cat and cougar for the clans. I suggest you go to a store and copy out these 3 mechs and save you money for a good TRO like 3058.
Best Mechs Ever! Good job FASA!.......2000-09-15
This Technical Readout definitely has the best Mechs ever created by FASA. You want proof? When Mechwarrior 4 comes out in November, try piloting the Nova Cat and you'll know what I mean. Also nominated for coolest new Mechs are the Shugenja, the Toyama, the Guillotine IIC, the Canis, and the Blood Asp. The ProtoMechs, although being a good addition to the game, are themselves pretty cheesy (I mean, c'mon, they're really just weird-looking, oversized Elementals). Aside from that, the drawings are much, much better than a certain OTHER TRO (3058,cough,cough) which obscured parts of the Mechs by the positions they were drawn in, which ruined them because you could not see what the entire Mech looked like. I definitely recommend this, because it will allow you play BattleTech using the coolest Mechs ever.
PS: Buy it here at Amazon, because it's a lot cheaper than at bookstores. I learned the hard way. Clan Coyote forever!
Life in cheap. 'Mechs are expensive........2000-03-18
First, to the previous review, I beg to argue. The industry of the Inner Sphere is more than capable of supporting so many new designs-they geared up for rapid and vlouminous production when the Clans first hit. Anyway, TRO:3060 is, in my view, the best of the bunch. The artwork for the 'Mechs is wicked cool, although the vehicle pics leave something to be desired. The 'Mechs themselves show that the IS is slowly adapting to Clan tactics. The number of IS Omnis is astounding, considering that the technology was first pioneered in 3058 by the Combine. The number of Clan second-line 'Mechs and vehicles gives them depth in the storyline. They can no longer be regarded as straight attackers-the existence of machines built only for defense humanizes them.
The best.......1999-07-16
This is the best TRO since 3050. The mech designs are original and unusual, the vehicles are really cool (and unusual) also. I like this TRO because the mechs no longer follw conventioal designs, an hindrance in the previous TROs because designs became repetitive (3055 *yawn*, 3058 *yawn yawn*). The story took an interesting turn that justifies my Warden Position o_O. The ProtoMechs are AWESOME, but I think there should have been more info on them than a *really* short overview ^_^;. The artwork is the best ever seen in battletech, although some of the mechs and ALL the Clan vehicles look wierd, which is a good thing. Some interesting surprises with Inner Sphere Refits (IIC mechs).

OK if you want to stick with templates.......2006-07-28
I bought this book on the same day as I purchased frontpage, in hopes of creating a relatively simple, but original website. No fancy graphics, but a nice design that I could hopefully het frontpage to code for me. What a dissapointment. For example, I attempted to put in a navigation bar. The book covers this decently, but only if you use the pre-made buttons, and doesn't cover how to alter the buttons to look how YOU want. No thanks.
Faster Smarter Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003.......2005-08-02
This book with the title of faster smarter did not prove to live up to its name. Another book pertaining to Frontpage 2003 with the name "FrontPage fast & easy" was a better fit to its name. Both books are from Microsoft Office, therefore, each has its place in the development of Microsoft's fine product.
What a great little book!.......2005-06-27
Normally I do HTML code by hand, lately I've moved to FrontPage. I can't say enough good things about this fantastic little book. It has been very helpful for me every step of the way in my FrontPage implementation. A good starter book with solid design tips.
Written in that other language - Microese.......2005-03-19
I got Front Page at a discount (quote unquote) - no expensive packaging AND no booklet. I have some experience with the programming world but was lost and knew I needed help. This was the first (and worst) place to turn. Like another reviewer, my wife thought this was just what I wanted...and at first I did too. But the presentation was jumpy and worse, it seemed as if the author were addressing a room of Microsoft business folks. Many of the explanations were of the obvious, particularly the review of all the menus. Why not put these in an appendix for later perusal? I was not looking for the dumbed-down Idiots series but I did need something that this did not fulfill. After much searching I found just the one and now am ready to go "on line" with my new site.
Simple, fast and easy!.......2004-07-19
When I took over the responsibility for our internal website, I knew nothing about web design or frontpage. After one on one instrucion from the former website designer, and after trying another book on the subject, without much real help, I came upon "Faster Smarter FrontPage". In very little time, I began to feel more comfortable working with creating our pages. It is well written, easy to understand and follow, and not written above the average person's head. Each time I refer to it, I learn more about structuring and changing a web page. It is not only a great teaching tool, but also a great reference. I highly recommend it to beginners and old hands alike!
