Book Description
There is unprecedented spiritual openness in today’s society, and at the same time, increasing economic pressure on the resources of local churches. The solution lies squarely on the able shoulders of God-gifted volunteers. And they are ready for the challenge!
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good.......2007-10-22
This book by Bill Hybels does an excellent job of inspiring people to become volunteers and encouraging leaders to ask people to volunteer. This work also encourages leaders to support and encourage volunteers. This book is packed with one testimony after another of people who committed themselves to the work of the Church and found fulfillment. The chapters are short and this is an easy read. The testimonies are inspiring. The weakness of the book for me was that there was not enough "how to" information. There was some at the end, but any discussions about what kind of volunteer programs are best in church and which are not are missing. This is a good book in that it is inspiring, but I wish that it had been a little more pragmatic.
Encouragement Through Anecdotals!.......2006-11-08
This combination is great. Not another abstract book with principles of how to do ministry. Rather, Bill Hybels shares stories from the ministry of how ordinary Christians were transformed into true servants of Christ, in their volunteer capacities.
Thank you, Bill. I highly recommend this book to those in ministry.
The Volunteer Revolution : Unleashing the Power of Everybody (Hardcover).......2006-03-15
Pastor Hybels spells out what I think is the call for all Christians: to love one another, and to be the servant. The organization of Christians to do the right thing TOGETHER regardless of denomination I believe is the future of Christianity. This book goes into detail on how we can come together through SERVICE. Buy this for your small group leader or your pastor.
We all need volunteers!.......2005-08-19
Bill again simply tells the story of Willow's need to recruit committed strong leaders. Woven through are personal accounts that motivate the reader to believe we can find those needed volunteers for our churches.
Strong on Inspiration, Weak on Implementation.......2005-04-16
I agree with another reviewer who in essence said this book paints a great picture of the value of volunteerism, but gives little instruction on how to recruit. Just about everyone who takes the time to read this title will admit that volunteer ministry is a very good thing and should be greatly applauded. The problem however, is that those of us who are leaders would appreciate Hybels doing more than just "preaching to the choir." The people needing to hear the message of this book are the very ones who won't be reading it.
I respect Hybels and have benefited enormously from his other writings. This title unfortunately, doesn't fit his previous high standards. While enjoyable and easy to read, this book provides little help to a frustrated leader with few volunteers.

"I hear the Spam ball. / It bounces--porqua, porqua. / A haiku of spring." John Nagamichi Cho--self-described Spam Haiku Archive Master, or "S.H.A.M." for short, and researcher at MIT--has compiled a treasure-trove of uniquely delicious poetry from more than 40 porkphile poets. With piggy prose on everything from Americana: "perfection uncanned / like a beautiful redhead / fresh from her trailer" to philosophy: "I'm pink, therefore I'm Spam," Spam-ku: Tranquil Reflections on Luncheon Loaf is a perfect accouterment for those with a taste for the quirky. --Rebekah Warren
Book Description
Since 1995, John Cho has faithfully harvested and preserved SPAM-related haiku for future generations. Now, for the first time in print, the SPAM Haiku Archive Master (or S.H.A.M.) offers more than 150 of the most delectible SPAM-ku ever prepared--selected from his collection of thousands.
Anyone who likes to eat SPAM luncheon meat, sing about SPAM with Monty Python, or simply relish the poetry that is SPAM's very existence will love sinking his or her teeth into SPAM-ku.

Funniest material I ever read online. I'm still laughing!.......2004-07-24
On August 22, 1995, I happened across spamhaiku.com, the source of this wonderful book, and was hooked in the first few minutes. I was roaring with laughter, tears streaming down my cheeks, in awe of the creativity that had been unleashed. Naturally, I had to try my hand at this art, beginning with Spam-Ku number 552:
I can't stop laughing.
SPAM has become a can of
worms. Please help yourself.
Not content with mere haiku, I upped the ante with this, number 558:
SPAMAPSPAMAPSPAM
SPAMAPSPAMAPSPAMAPSPAM
APS. A palindrome.
Eventually I became thematic, which was inevitable, really. Herewith, a small sample of the output:
16673
New year, new diet.
Cake, pie, bread, whipped cream are banned.
All I eat is SPAM.
16674
SPAM diet works great.
Ninety days with nothing else.
Now on life support.
16675
Doc says, "Do Adkins!"
Prescribes the little blue can.
Then calls mortician.
Years later after much practice and honing of skills, I called for reinforcement, luring another hapless victim into the Spam-Ku lair. Hours of study and a lunchmeat mind meld produced the world's only three-word, 17-syllable Spam-Ku, number 16379:
Postmasticated
porcinitudicity:
Extravaganza!
You asked for my advice, so here goes:
Buy the book and see
you'll be laughing just like me,
then switch to turkey.
Perfection Uncanned.......2004-02-01
John Cho must be a profoundly unusual man to combine the concepts of Japanese verse and Spam. This book is an utter delight for anyone who cherishes the unusual, strange, or surreal. The book contains 162 poems (technically, many are not haiku, but are senryu, but since 'ku' means 'verse' in Japanese, the title is still appropriate) about the most popular spiced pork luncheon meat product the world has ever known.
The book is actually divided into chapters such as "Dreams and Nightmares", Obsession and Addiction", and "Philosophy and Deep Thought." In all cases Mr. Cho, who is the 'Spam Haiku Archive Master' (SPAM) for his Spam-ku website (http://www.spamhaiku.com/spamhaiku/site/), has selected only the tastiest poetic morsels for us to feast on. I have many favorites, but will cite two examples of the finest of the Spam poetry genre. In the section "Epiphany and Portent" there is this gem:
Roseate pork slab,
How you quiver on my spork!
Radiant light, gelled.
While in the section "Anticipation and Desire", this little greasy gem lurks:
How my hands tremble
Applying a light coat of
SPAM-colored lipstick.
All in all this book is perfect for those with a well developed or offbeat sense of humor, or alternately, it is tailor made to annoy anyone who takes poetry way too seriously (which can be fun in and of itself). I am pleased to see Mr. Cho's important contribution to literature in print, and hope for a sequel at some point in the future.
Great humor book, cute poetry book.......2002-05-20
If you want to have a good laugh, try this one out. A book of haikus about Spam can't be anything but funny, and the book's daring makes it somewhat refrshing for a poetry book. The only "meat" an actual poet may draw from it is the invigorating notion that a poem can be about anything if you set your pen to it. Beyond that, it's a humor volume I like to punish poets with at open mics.
Sad sad day...........2002-03-28
It depresses me when a book like this can get such rave reviews form people. This isn't even poetry.
17 silly syllables.......2001-07-02
What a whacky idea to mix spam and the Japanese Haiku! If you are looking for a way to wile away the hours writing sometimes profound and sometimes worthless words, use this little book for inspiration. Then you can go to the spamku's web site and submit some of your best/worst efforts for others to read.

Mark Jenkins writes about music and film for the Washington Post, Washington City Paper, NPR's "All Things Considered," and other outlets. He lives in Washington, D.C.

Customer Reviews:
wow.......2006-11-16
It's a great book but you aren't into the bands and curious about the scene at that time then you will probably be pretty bored.
HARDcore.......2006-08-06
I loved reading this book. I even saw some of my good friends past and present in here. A must have for the DC Hardcore fan, what a great birthday present I give it 6 stars!
A letdown but bought it since it's about harDCore.......2006-05-12
I suspect most people bought this book just because it is about Dischord and the DC scene, and we like the idea of a cool looking book format about the scene. But this book is, overall, a letdown.
Like the author himself, this book is a bit of a bore that seems to glorify certain things without driving a sense of vitality at all. The details can be cool but often times are tedious and painful to read. Let's face it-- no one from outside the scene would find this book tolerable at all.
I am not going to debate what bands were/weren't included. I just found the book to be long and, ultimately, slightly a downer. Disappointing. Steal it from a friend then give it back-- you'll see.
quite a thrilling read.......2006-01-12
I'm just a twenty-year-old college student so I really can't say if this book is "accurate" or not. However, it is a thrilling first-person account of one of the most exciting music scenes in the history of the country. Alternative/punk music icons such as Ian MacKaye, Guy Piccioto, Henry Rollins and Dr. Know are given new life as the book details their rise from rebellious punks to near-living legends. This book is first and foremost a labor of love, and it shows in the writer's passionate and detailed accounts of the experiences (from his own and other sources) that helped shape and influence countless bands to come.
Very well written.......2005-07-18
While I agree with many of the complaints against this book (it being focused on only one element of the D.C. scene and certain bands etc) I do find it to be one of the few and certainly one of the very few well written books on American hardcore music (unlike American hardcore a tribal history for example which reads like it was written by a disgruntled four year old)
Some of the pictures of the early D.C. scene are exellent (how old were Bad Brains in those photos???) and the book well documents the evolution of bands and their members both musically and politically. The main bands being Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Iron Cross, Scream and several others covering their high and low points over the past two decades.
The downside is the heavy focus on a few key bands (I would have liked to read more on other 80s D.C. bands Swiz for example but they receive only about 3 lines (if that) and lables (Dischord being the main focus of the book to the point you would think they were the only label in Washington) and the second part of the book goes way top heavy on Fugazi, Bikini Kill and the effects the whole Nirvana indie music explosion had on the D.C. scene.
This book may have a few faults (and other reviewers have listed them) but it is well written and documented and if you have an interest in the Dischord bands then this is the book for you.
This book shows that punk also had a conscience and an intelligent voice and was not simply a means to "blow off steam" as Steven Blush would have us believe.
Book Description
Examines philosophical aspects of evil by looking at horror films from a feminist perspective
In this book, Cynthia Freeland seeks to counter both aesthetic disdain and moral condemnation toward horror by focusing on a select body of important and revealing films, demonstrating how the genre is capable of deep philosophical reflection about the existence and the nature of evil-both human and cosmic. In exploring these films, Freeland argues against a purely psychoanalytic approach and opts for both feminist and philosophical understandings. Freeland is particularly interested in showing how gender figures into screen presentations of evil. Written for film enthusiasts and students, the book examines a wide array of films including The Silence of the Lambs, Repulsion, Frankenstein, The Fly, Dead Ringers, Alien, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Interview with the Vampire, Psycho, Frenzy, Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, Hellraiser, and many others.
Customer Reviews:
Solidly written, thought provoking look at horror in film.......2005-08-20
This book is extremely accessable and discusses horror in film in a profound way with considerable scope. Anyone who responds keenly to the supernatural in literature and film is bound to enjoy these in depth discussions of many of the finest horror films we have. The author is upfront about her approach, and about her own likes and dislikes, but these admissions do not limit the book in any way. There is much to learn here, much to ponder. For an author like me who believes that horror fiction and film reflect our deepest social and psychological concerns, this book has tremendous value. I am looking for more books by the author.
Really good book on all kinds of horror.......2002-07-16
I found this book to be wonderfully readable and absolutely facinating.
Ms. Freeland's view of the movies she discusses (Frankinstien, Dracula, Interview with a Vampire, the Hunger, The Shining, Eraserhead, the Alien series, the Hellraiser movies, etc.) is very interesting and her perspective on good and evil deserves to be brought to the foreground. I also appreciate her critiques of flat feminist critiques. Noting that sometimes a chainsaw is just a chainsaw.
This book makes a great basis for a number of film festivals. And with the advant of DVD, you can program it right in your own home. Say, what about your book club reading this book and watching the movies? That would be a blast.
Now...If I could only find a book club.
Thorough & insightful, but too academic........2000-05-27
My favorite title of recent memory, "The Naked and the Undead" (a play on Mailer's WWII classic "The Naked and the Dead") is a much-needed review of recent horror films. Too many books on this topic are sadly out of date, incomplete, condescending, or just plain wrong. Philosophy professor Cynthia Freeland, however, dives right into the thick of things, stating that her favorite director is auteur David Cronenberg and that she has little patience for mainstream schlock like Freddy and Jason. "All right," I thought to myself, "my kind of writer."
She covers the entire "Hellraiser" series, the most recent vampire films, and classics like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," "Repulsion," "Them!" "Eraserhead," "Peeping Tom" and "Nosferatu." The chapters range from "Women and Bugs" (the Alien and Species films) to "Monstrous Flesh" and "The Slasher's Blood Lust." Freeland knows her stuff, and her insights are profound and interesting. She considers feminist images in contemporary horror, graphic violence and its impression upon viewers, the appeal of the seductive, aesthetic vampire, and the visionary, intellectual works of Cronenberg ("Videodrome," "Dead Ringers," "The Fly").
The major problem, however, is that she's an academic, and the book reads like a PhD. dissertation. It's not a lot of fun to read, like, say, Stephen King's "Danse Macabre" or Kim Newman's "Nightmare Movies" or the anthology "Cut!" If you're a serious reader as well as horror film buff, then this book is very worthwhile. If you've ever studied film in college this book will be right up your alley. If, however, you don't really call into either category, then this book probably isn't for you.
There is much to be learned from in this book, and I'm very glad Ms. Freeland took such care and patience. I only wish she had approached this book more as an intelligent fan rather than as an academic. So, 3 and a half stars. And kudos for the awesome cover art!

Stovold's Mornington Crescent Almanac 2002
ASIN: 0752844229 |
Book Description
Mornington Crescent is a game whose rules and history are shrouded in myth and legend. This book is a history of the game and a study of the great players who have graced it for nearly a century. It will include testimony from today's great exponents, and hints from the professionals on how to play the game more effectively. The game is a feature on I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, the most listened-to comedy program on British radio.
Customer Reviews:
The only Mornington Crescent Guide you'll ever need! Or get........2000-12-15
Well, I'll start out the game with a bold, unorthodox move: Lancaster Gate. Your turn, and please remember that choosing alternate Sunday-only stations are not valid in the Amazon.com championship versions of the game, that Aldwych Station, though closed, is still a valid choice when backed into one of Mr. Garden's patented cross-hatch ploys, and of course I shouldn't need to remind you that choosing Jubilee Line Extension stations is still regarded as hopelessly amateur; should you choose to counter with Canada Water, you will be met with derisive giggles. Your move.
If the above doesn't mean anything to you, you're not a fan of the bewildering game of Mornington Crescent, and this is not the book for you. Go pick up a Bill Oddie birding book instead. On the other hand, if the above inspired you to snap out "Gants Hill" with authority and a smirk, then sprint, don't crawl, to pick up the only *authorized* Mornington Crescent companion (all others are mere shadows).
Seriously (and at the risk of ruining the joke) this is a humor book based on the popular BBC radio quiz show "I'm Sorry, I Haven't A Clue." British quiz shows like these, far from being a challenge to ordinary citizens to answer tough trivia, are more frequently a showcase for celebrities to show off their comic skills (think "Whose Line is It Anyway" rather than "Who Want to Be a Millionaire"). By far the most cheer-eliciting segment of ISIHAC is "Mornington Crescent," a round-table game in which the panelists must name London Underground stations, and the first to name Mornington Crescent is the winner. Sound simple? Well, it would be...if there were truly any rules other than to be funny while doing so...
If you're a fan of BBC radio comedy and you're in on the joke, this book is a must have, with Mornington Crescent history, Q&As, recipes, profiles, short stories (Charles Dickens versus Lewis Carroll in an especially ruthless and deadly game of MC)--everything a serious player of the game needs to know.
Except the rules.
Well, you can't expect them to give away *all* the answers, can you?

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for beginners.......2004-11-13
My mother is computer illiterate. Sure she knows how to type in Word, but to do anything more than that (such as formatting text), she's clueless. Thats why when we went to the store to find a book for her easy to understand. I went though book after book and finally came upon this one. I had a few criteria for a book: 1) the pictures had to be in full color, 2) the book had to start at the very VERY beginning (such as finding and starting excel) and 3) the book had to baby step through excel. This book has everything for the TRUE beginner. All the pictures are in color and explain every step, so there isn't any confusion as to how you get from one point to another. Each lesson builds on the lesson before it, so there is continuity. When I said the book had to baby step through it, this book does just that- It starts off with the introductory opening excel though the start menu to a more advanced using pivottables and macros (There are even things I didn't know, like how to turn text into speech!) The words are in plain english, so anyone can understand it. Overall, this is a great book for the novice and also for a self-proclaimed expert.
