3 out of 5 stars Nothing to write home about..........2007-04-27

If, by chance, you have never had to put together a resume this book will provide you with excellent step-by-step instruction. There is a section that assists in gathering the essentials of who you are and incorporating that information into a single document. There is also a portion of the book that provides a rather substantial list of "action words" to help you bulk up your resume. The resume samples are fairly decent, but not anything striking. They are definitely professional looking, but they probably won't make you stick out from the pack.

Let me tell you, that I have just read through four resume books specifically aimed at teachers (this book, the one listed below, Resumes and Cover Letters for Teachers, and Real-Resumes for Teachers). If you want the ultimate book, you should take a look at Expert Resumes For Teachers And Educators (Expert Resumes).

I really enjoyed this resume book. It helped me to get my first teaching job and I was even complimented on my resume by my employer. I really found the chapter on what gets left out helpful. It also gives you good action words and short phrases to use. Great for administrators too!

As educators know, it can be difficult to put together a resume filled with all that goes into teaching: classroom, coaching, club advisor, education, licenses, etc. This book not only tells the career educator what to include, it helps weed out unnecessary information. With sections such as Production Guidelines, Tailoring Your Resume, and Resumes for International Teaching, this book is for the teacher seriously looking for a new position. It even has a section on Cover Letters.

Everyone has heard of the Peace Corps, and that's no accident. When the agency was started in the early days of the Kennedy Administration, one of the top priorities was making it known virtually overnight, and some of the most talented advertising professionals in America donated their expertise to publicizing it. With John F. Kennedy's brother-in-law, Sargent Shriver, as director, the Peace Corps represented the high ideals of a crucial decade in American history. Elizabeth Cobbs Hoffman, a professor of American foreign relations at San Diego State University, details the first decade of the Peace Corps, focusing on the struggles to create the agency, the political skill that made it flourish, and the influence of the Vietnam War, which Hoffman refers to as the Peace Corps's "evil twin."

Book Description

The nation was powerful and prosperous, the president was vigorous and young, and a confident generation was gathering its forces to test the New Frontier. The cold war was well under way, but if you could just, as the song went, "put a little love in your heart," then "the world would be a better place." The Peace Corps, conceived in the can-do spirit of the sixties, embodied America's long pursuit of moral leadership on a global scale. Traversing four decades and three continents, this story of the Peace Corps and the people and politics behind it is a fascinating look at American idealism at work amid the hard political realities of the second half of the twentieth century.

More than any other entity, the Peace Corps broached an age-old dilemma of U.S. foreign policy: how to reconcile the imperatives and temptations of power politics with the ideals of freedom and self-determination for all nations. All You Need Is Love follows the struggle to balance the tensions between these values from the Corps' first heady days under Sargent Shriver and beyond to the questioning years of the Vietnam War, when the Peace Corps was accused of being window dressing for imperialism. It follows the Peace Corps through the years when volunteering dropped off--and finally into its renewed popularity amid the widespread conviction that the Peace Corps preserves the nation's finest traditions.

With vivid stories from returned volunteers of exotic places and daunting circumstances, this is an engrossing account of the successes and failures of this unique governmental organization, and of the geopolitics and personal convictions that underpin it. In the end, the question that is most compelling is whether the Peace Corps most helped the countries that received its volunteers, or whether its greater service was to America and its sense of national identity and mission.

4 out of 5 stars A reflection of its time.......2001-07-17

In the 1960s many Americans attempted to redefine their nation's identity both at home and abroad. No institution reflected this attitude better than the Peace Corps. In All You Need is Love Elizabeth Cobbs-Hoffman explores the history of the corps, and reveals, that by tracing its development in the last forty years, one can gain a better understanding on how it became the quintessential institution of social reform in the 1960s. Cobbs-Hoffman begins her narrative by exploring the background of American idealism. She asserts that the United States, since its founding, has perceived itself as a crusading nation whose mission has been to promote the spread of its form of "benevolent" democracy. This idealism, however, has often clashed with the reality that states, like individuals, sometimes act for selfish reasons, and not for the good of others. This contradiction has often made Americans uncomfortable with their role in the world of power-politics, and as a consequence Cobbs-Hoffman asserts that, "Paradoxically when the United States has been at its most expansionist, it has been most subject to idealism. The late 1950's and early 1960's was one such a period. The country, in the twenty years after World War II, experienced an era of unprecedented economic growth, and increased military and political might. This preeminence, however, created conflicting emotions for many Americans, whose pride in this strength, was matched by their historical perception that power corrupted Americans' virtue. Revolted by the consequence of extreme nationalism and racism in Nazi Germany, numerous Americans took to the concept of universalism, and its belief that all humans deserved the same rights, regardless of nationality. McCarthyism, and the overt racism of the 1950's, made Americans grapple with their vision of what kind of country they lived in. Were they becoming just another fascist state; a place where the individual had no power over the vast machinery of an unfeeling state? With the election of the John F. Kennedy in 1960, Cobbs-Hoffman shows how these feelings of unease were coalesced into the foundation of the Peace Corps, a movement that attempted to show the world the altruistic side of U.S. power. Cobbs-Hoffman's history shows that Americans and historians have tendency to divide the world into good and evil, and that the political right and the left have a tedency to percieve each other as diametrically opposed. Cobbs-Hoffman would argue that both are inexorably linked. She calls the Vietnam war the Peace Corps evil twin, and in many ways this is true. Both were initiated with a spirit of naivete and the belief that they could show others American superiority. Each had their view of the world altered by the cultures and realities which they encountered, and often for both it was a humbling experience. In the end, the left's and the right's disdain for the spirit of the sixties reveal that the Peace Corps attained its objective in creating better understanding among Americans and the rest of the world.

    Book Description

The author addresses the neglected issue of the relations between the functioning of powerful state industrial firms and the town under socialism. As they strived for labor force, the manufacturing and mining employers in Central and Eastern Europe became prominent gatekeepers controlling access to scarce goods and services, which reflected a specific labor market segmentation. The distribution of social benefits and burdens they generated enhanced life chances of certain groups by and large at the cost of the underprivileged--women and the elderly in particular. This socialist industry contributed to social injustice and deprivation as well as the reproduction of entrapping spatial settings such as factory colonies and areas reserved for potential expansion. The study reveals a great diversity of mechanisms of industrial control over and exploitation of socialist towns in Poland. Spatial organization of local activities and facilities exhibited the power of industrial gatekeepers, and in several cases became a mediating element facilitating achievement of the firm's objectives. The residents' sense of place was permeated by the company through its multiple involvement outside the factory gates, which could justify its dominant position and conceal sources of social inequalities and conflicts. The legacy of socialist factory paternalism bears heavily upon post-socialist society, which is evident in anti-egalitarian attitudes and social closure attempts demonstrated by the beneficiaries of the gatekeepers' allocation.

Dennis Miller is the bebop king of comedy, the pope of the pissed-off. Ranting Again is his latest collection of rapid-fire riffs on everything from animal rights to the Internet, harvested from his hugely successful TV show. Miller's wit is razor-sharp, and his rants have the controlled spontaneity of good jazz--giving them the energy of a live performance even in book form. Like Lenny Bruce and George Carlin, Miller uses his quick, no-holds-barred delivery to chip away at some of our most ridiculous cultural obsessions. He may occasionally pick easy targets, but he hits them hard and funny. Here he is discussing the perennially touchy topic of violence in the media:

"We're all looking for someone to blame if our kid goes bad, and the media is a defenseless target for the clusterfuck of self-righteous rhetoric that passes for intelligent debate these days.... The truth is, TV isn't the biggest influence on your kids. You are. There's probably more real emotional violence and bad vibes at the average American family dinner table than in an entire season of Highlander, not to mention better acting."

Now, Dennis is not for the faint of heart, and you won't agree with everything he says, but something in here will make you laugh out loud. Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. --Simon Leake

      Book Description

Dennis Miller is back, and he is Ranting Again in this hilarious compendium of wit, wisdom, and righteous outrage.  This is good news for all of us who fume at the country's lack of common sense, and seethe at the absurdity of the daily headlines.

Setting his sights higher and wider than ever before, Dennis Miller is at the top of his game, unleashing his unique brand of scathing wit on anything and everything.  Taking on such targets as illegal immigration, the sobriety movement, the American school system, and men who wear tight T-shirts even though they have big breasts, Miller proves that nobody is safe from his hilarious yet hard-hitting scrutiny.

Showcasing Dennis Miller's trademark blend of wide-ranging allusions, thought-provoking insights, and outrageous opinions, Ranting Again is a brilliant collection that is his sharpest and funniest yet.

1 out of 5 stars Annoying, Very Annoying...But Not Funny.......2003-01-06

I love Dennis Miller. He used to be a blast on Saturday Night Live, with his quirky sense of humor. But, "Ranting Again" is a total misfire. The usual stand-up comic subjects are covered: single life, politics, feminism, driving in L.A., therapy, etc.

I bought this as the 3-CD comedy album, and it has one fatal flaw. It's not funny. In my hours of listening, I think I had a genuine chuckle, but not a laugh out loud har-har.

If you want to get depressed about the state of driving, relations between the sexes, politics or any of the other myriad of subjects covered by Miller, buy this now! Otherwise, skip it and find something funny to buy.

4 out of 5 stars Dennis Miller, I love you!.......2002-09-18

Dennis Miller is either a love him or hate him kind of guy. I find his commentary brilliant and incisive. If you love his brand of humor, I would snap this book up. If you don't like him...go ahead; give him a try again...you know you want to!

This is one of the few books that I consistantly laugh out loud while reading, but it does give you pause to think. (Those who say smoking won't kill you are lying through the hole in their trachea) I find that social commentary delivered with a good dose of humor often is the best way to make ones point without seeming preachy. Miller is the King of this arena. He definitely understands the workings of American society, warts and all, and can absolutely hit the nail on the head every time.

This is a book that manages to deftly walk the fine line of making you think AND entertaining you.

1 out of 5 stars Pay Your Writers ROYALTIES.......2000-11-17

Dennis Miller takes a lot of credit for his rants despite the fact that he has a staff of writers. These rants are lifted from his HBO show and lost most of their intensity in printed form. It does give you a chance to test the integrity of many of his obscure references (calling Dice Clay's profanity "innocuous" is just one of many of Den-den's pretentious mistakes), but it's often hard to figure out what he's really ranting about. Dennis Miller is the most insecure man in showbiz and his constant barrage of obscure references is his way of trying to tell you that he's smarter, more informed and more righteous than anyone else in the world. As he ages, he's becoming more convinced of his own talent, despite all the mounting evidence that he's completely delusional. If you ask me, Bill Hicks said it best about Dennis Miller and all other former comics who've gone on to whore out their talents to the advertising industry: YOU DO A COMMERCIAL ENDORSEMENT, YOU'RE OFF THE ARTISTIC ROLL CALL FOREVER. End of story.

3 out of 5 stars My Second Review..........2000-09-14

OK, I realize, by all of your negative reviews that my previous review that you just do not like it. Well I guess I can change the text a little bit to get on your guys' good side.

The book is midly funny, compared to the "The Rants". It lacks that certain quality of a book that is humour. I guess it is a sequel book, it is a poor copy of the first.

Dennis Miller is a funny/smart kinda guy, but this is just not as good.

Remember, ideas change, that is why they are ideas and not written in stone. So after I did a second look, I found it was a poor attempt.

      5 out of 5 stars A very funny comic,a very funny book..........2000-06-13

Hello, this book is an assortment of Rants from Dennis Miller's award winning show.

This is sort of a sequel book and it is equaly as funny as the first.

In the book there are some very funny and very serious thoughts shared by Miller. He has the right idea with some of the subject matter.

All I can say is if you enjoy his show, and just want to remember waht he said, read this book.

      Well that is it.

"What are the words to that song?" is a common question, and trying hopelessly to remember a nagging, half-finished phrase can sometimes be enough to drive a person over the edge. It's a situation that 500 Best-Loved Song Lyrics, collected and edited by Ronald Herder, attempts to rectify. From "The Aba Daba Honeymoon" (by Arthur Fields and Walter Donovan, 1914) to "Zum Gali Gali" (Israeli work song), it covers scads of folk songs, hymns, and old-time show tunes. In the case of songs with multiple versions, Herder has chosen, as he puts it in his introduction, "the text that is most memorable, that captures the spirit of the original song the way we remembered it, that is truly 'best-loved.'" However, if the lyrics you're trying to remember are from a tune along the lines of "Proud Mary" or the theme song from the Brady Bunch, you're out of luck: in keeping with Dover Publications' standard practice, all of the included words are out of copyright, and that means they must be over 50 years old. But for Christmas carols, patriotic songs (you'll find all four verses of "The Star-Spangled Banner"), folk music, and the kind of old-time popular songs that accompany vintage cartoons from Disney and Warner Bros., this is a very useful little collection. The index is in the front, and all the songs are arranged alphabetically. One caveat: although several songs in foreign languages are provided, translations are not. (So what does "Zum Gali Gali" mean, anyway? You'll have to seek the answer elsewhere.) --Sarah Bryan Miller

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Impressive Collection.......2006-10-23

This book is amazingly comprehensive in the types of songs it presents. It includes hymns, Chistmas carols, spirituals, folk songs, national anthems (British, Canadian and American) and even nursery rhymes. The folk songs are mainly American, but Welsh, Scottish, Irish, French, Mexican and those of other nationalities are included as well. The author has done an excellent job.

Although the coverage is very good, it omits such well-known songs as Mocking Bird Hill and Beautiful, beautiful brown eyes. Let's hope that a later edition will rectify such omissions.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, I never realize how many songs I knew!.......2003-04-14

500 Songs sounds like a lot. It is fun to go through the book and see how many songs you know. I don't know who decided these were the top 500, but they did a good job. It is a book of lyrics only. I wish it had included the sheet music, musical notation. Overall I feel I got my monies worth,. I drag it out every now and then and just sing out load, even if it bothers the cat.

          5 out of 5 stars Lyrical Treasures.......2000-03-01

It is rare to be able to find the lyrics to songs of the past; particularly if you are looking for songs by Berlin, Gershwin, Von Tilzer, Cohan, and so many of the song-writing giants of a bygone era. Most of the songs in this collection are pop standards, spirituals, folk songs, ragtime, and what-you-will. They are here with both their verses and chorus's. What a joy! What a blast from the past! And the price is miniscule compared to the value. I would've paid the price of the book for the lyric to just one or two of the songs in this book. In most cases each song has its publishing date with the author(s) name alongside the title. I was surprised that so many of the songs I've loved were first published so long ago. Treat yourself to a volume you will treasure. Sit down at the old keyboard and sing out!

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for.......1999-12-01

Do you ever find yourself singing an old familiar song and replacing most of the words with la-la-la? Do you just get started belting out an old favorite and you come to the end of the first verse too soon? Do you want to know the words to a song, but don't care about the music? This book is the answer. I can't say that it contains every song you will look for, but I can tell you that when I looked through it, it was like opening a long lost treasure. Many of the songs I had completely forgotten were there with all the verses. What a joy! I will sing all night!

            Book Description

The idea of a common American culture has been in retreat for a generation or more. Arguments emphasizing difference have discredited the grand synthetic studies that marginalized groups and perspectives at odds with the master narrative. Surface and Depth: The Quest for Legibility in American Culture is a fresh attempt to revitalize an interpretive overview. It seeks to recuperate a central tradition while simultaneously recognizing how much that tradition has occluded. The book focuses on the American zeal for knowing or making accessible. This compulsion has a long history stretching back to Puritan anti-monasticism; to the organization of the landscape into clearly delineated gridwork sections; and to the creation of a national government predicted on popular vigilance. It can be observed in the unmatched American receptivity to the motion pictures and to psychoanalysis: the first a technology of visual surfaces, the second a technique for plumbing interior depths. Popular literature, especially the Western and the detective story, has reinscribed the cult of legibility. Each genre features a plot that drives through impediments to transparent resolution. Elite literature has adopted a more contradictory stance. The landmarks of the American canon typically embark on journeys of discovery while simultaneously renouncing the possibility of full disclosure (as in Ahab's doomed pursuit of the "inscrutable" white whale). The notorious modernism of American literature, its precocious attraction to obscurity and multiple meaning, evolved as an effort to block the intrusions of a hegemonic cultural dynamic. The American passion for knowability has been prolific of casualties. Acts of making visible have always entailed the erasure and invisibility of racial minorities. American society has also routinely trespassed on customary areas of reserve. A nation intolerant of the hidden paradoxically pioneered the legal concept of privacy, but it did so in reaction to its own invasive excesses.
