All You Need Is Love: The Peace Corps and the Spirit of the 1960s
Elizabeth Cobbs Hoffman Manufacturer: Harvard University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0674003802 |
Amazon.com
Everyone has heard of the Peace Corps, and that's no accident. When the agency was started in the early days of the Kennedy Administration, one of the top priorities was making it known virtually overnight, and some of the most talented advertising professionals in America donated their expertise to publicizing it. With John F. Kennedy's brother-in-law, Sargent Shriver, as director, the Peace Corps represented the high ideals of a crucial decade in American history. Elizabeth Cobbs Hoffman, a professor of American foreign relations at San Diego State University, details the first decade of the Peace Corps, focusing on the struggles to create the agency, the political skill that made it flourish, and the influence of the Vietnam War, which Hoffman refers to as the Peace Corps's "evil twin."Book Description
The nation was powerful and prosperous, the president was vigorous and young, and a confident generation was gathering its forces to test the New Frontier. The cold war was well under way, but if you could just, as the song went, "put a little love in your heart," then "the world would be a better place." The Peace Corps, conceived in the can-do spirit of the sixties, embodied America's long pursuit of moral leadership on a global scale. Traversing four decades and three continents, this story of the Peace Corps and the people and politics behind it is a fascinating look at American idealism at work amid the hard political realities of the second half of the twentieth century.
More than any other entity, the Peace Corps broached an age-old dilemma of U.S. foreign policy: how to reconcile the imperatives and temptations of power politics with the ideals of freedom and self-determination for all nations. All You Need Is Love follows the struggle to balance the tensions between these values from the Corps' first heady days under Sargent Shriver and beyond to the questioning years of the Vietnam War, when the Peace Corps was accused of being window dressing for imperialism. It follows the Peace Corps through the years when volunteering dropped off--and finally into its renewed popularity amid the widespread conviction that the Peace Corps preserves the nation's finest traditions.
With vivid stories from returned volunteers of exotic places and daunting circumstances, this is an engrossing account of the successes and failures of this unique governmental organization, and of the geopolitics and personal convictions that underpin it. In the end, the question that is most compelling is whether the Peace Corps most helped the countries that received its volunteers, or whether its greater service was to America and its sense of national identity and mission.

Industrial Control Over the Socialist Town: Benevolence or Exploitation?
Boleslaw Domanski Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0275956334 |
Book Description
The author addresses the neglected issue of the relations between the functioning of powerful state industrial firms and the town under socialism. As they strived for labor force, the manufacturing and mining employers in Central and Eastern Europe became prominent gatekeepers controlling access to scarce goods and services, which reflected a specific labor market segmentation. The distribution of social benefits and burdens they generated enhanced life chances of certain groups by and large at the cost of the underprivileged--women and the elderly in particular. This socialist industry contributed to social injustice and deprivation as well as the reproduction of entrapping spatial settings such as factory colonies and areas reserved for potential expansion. The study reveals a great diversity of mechanisms of industrial control over and exploitation of socialist towns in Poland. Spatial organization of local activities and facilities exhibited the power of industrial gatekeepers, and in several cases became a mediating element facilitating achievement of the firm's objectives. The residents' sense of place was permeated by the company through its multiple involvement outside the factory gates, which could justify its dominant position and conceal sources of social inequalities and conflicts. The legacy of socialist factory paternalism bears heavily upon post-socialist society, which is evident in anti-egalitarian attitudes and social closure attempts demonstrated by the beneficiaries of the gatekeepers' allocation.

Ranting Again
Dennis Miller Manufacturer: Main Street Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

Amazon.com
Dennis Miller is the bebop king of comedy, the pope of the pissed-off. Ranting Again is his latest collection of rapid-fire riffs on everything from animal rights to the Internet, harvested from his hugely successful TV show. Miller's wit is razor-sharp, and his rants have the controlled spontaneity of good jazz--giving them the energy of a live performance even in book form. Like Lenny Bruce and George Carlin, Miller uses his quick, no-holds-barred delivery to chip away at some of our most ridiculous cultural obsessions. He may occasionally pick easy targets, but he hits them hard and funny. Here he is discussing the perennially touchy topic of violence in the media:"We're all looking for someone to blame if our kid goes bad, and the media is a defenseless target for the clusterfuck of self-righteous rhetoric that passes for intelligent debate these days.... The truth is, TV isn't the biggest influence on your kids. You are. There's probably more real emotional violence and bad vibes at the average American family dinner table than in an entire season of Highlander, not to mention better acting."
Now, Dennis is not for the faint of heart, and you won't agree with everything he says, but something in here will make you laugh out loud. Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. --Simon Leake
Book Description
Dennis Miller is back, and he is Ranting Again in this hilarious compendium of wit, wisdom, and righteous outrage. This is good news for all of us who fume at the country's lack of common sense, and seethe at the absurdity of the daily headlines.Customer Reviews:
Annoying, Very Annoying...But Not Funny.......2003-01-06
I bought this as the 3-CD comedy album, and it has one fatal flaw. It's not funny. In my hours of listening, I think I had a genuine chuckle, but not a laugh out loud har-har.
If you want to get depressed about the state of driving, relations between the sexes, politics or any of the other myriad of subjects covered by Miller, buy this now! Otherwise, skip it and find something funny to buy.
Dennis Miller, I love you!.......2002-09-18
This is one of the few books that I consistantly laugh out loud while reading, but it does give you pause to think. (Those who say smoking won't kill you are lying through the hole in their trachea) I find that social commentary delivered with a good dose of humor often is the best way to make ones point without seeming preachy. Miller is the King of this arena. He definitely understands the workings of American society, warts and all, and can absolutely hit the nail on the head every time.
This is a book that manages to deftly walk the fine line of making you think AND entertaining you.
Pay Your Writers ROYALTIES.......2000-11-17
My Second Review..........2000-09-14
The book is midly funny, compared to the "The Rants". It lacks that certain quality of a book that is humour. I guess it is a sequel book, it is a poor copy of the first.
Dennis Miller is a funny/smart kinda guy, but this is just not as good.
Remember, ideas change, that is why they are ideas and not written in stone. So after I did a second look, I found it was a poor attempt.
A very funny comic,a very funny book..........2000-06-13
This is sort of a sequel book and it is equaly as funny as the first.
In the book there are some very funny and very serious thoughts shared by Miller. He has the right idea with some of the subject matter.
All I can say is if you enjoy his show, and just want to remember waht he said, read this book.
Well that is it.
Good Day...

500 Best-Loved Song Lyrics
Manufacturer: Dover Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 048629725X |
Amazon.com
"What are the words to that song?" is a common question, and trying hopelessly to remember a nagging, half-finished phrase can sometimes be enough to drive a person over the edge. It's a situation that 500 Best-Loved Song Lyrics, collected and edited by Ronald Herder, attempts to rectify. From "The Aba Daba Honeymoon" (by Arthur Fields and Walter Donovan, 1914) to "Zum Gali Gali" (Israeli work song), it covers scads of folk songs, hymns, and old-time show tunes. In the case of songs with multiple versions, Herder has chosen, as he puts it in his introduction, "the text that is most memorable, that captures the spirit of the original song the way we remembered it, that is truly 'best-loved.'" However, if the lyrics you're trying to remember are from a tune along the lines of "Proud Mary" or the theme song from the Brady Bunch, you're out of luck: in keeping with Dover Publications' standard practice, all of the included words are out of copyright, and that means they must be over 50 years old. But for Christmas carols, patriotic songs (you'll find all four verses of "The Star-Spangled Banner"), folk music, and the kind of old-time popular songs that accompany vintage cartoons from Disney and Warner Bros., this is a very useful little collection. The index is in the front, and all the songs are arranged alphabetically. One caveat: although several songs in foreign languages are provided, translations are not. (So what does "Zum Gali Gali" mean, anyway? You'll have to seek the answer elsewhere.) --Sarah Bryan MillerBook Description

Surface and Depth: The Quest for Legibility in American Culture
Michael T. Gilmore Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0195157761 |
Book Description
The idea of a common American culture has been in retreat for a generation or more. Arguments emphasizing difference have discredited the grand synthetic studies that marginalized groups and perspectives at odds with the master narrative. Surface and Depth: The Quest for Legibility in American Culture is a fresh attempt to revitalize an interpretive overview. It seeks to recuperate a central tradition while simultaneously recognizing how much that tradition has occluded. The book focuses on the American zeal for knowing or making accessible. This compulsion has a long history stretching back to Puritan anti-monasticism; to the organization of the landscape into clearly delineated gridwork sections; and to the creation of a national government predicted on popular vigilance. It can be observed in the unmatched American receptivity to the motion pictures and to psychoanalysis: the first a technology of visual surfaces, the second a technique for plumbing interior depths. Popular literature, especially the Western and the detective story, has reinscribed the cult of legibility. Each genre features a plot that drives through impediments to transparent resolution. Elite literature has adopted a more contradictory stance. The landmarks of the American canon typically embark on journeys of discovery while simultaneously renouncing the possibility of full disclosure (as in Ahab's doomed pursuit of the "inscrutable" white whale). The notorious modernism of American literature, its precocious attraction to obscurity and multiple meaning, evolved as an effort to block the intrusions of a hegemonic cultural dynamic. The American passion for knowability has been prolific of casualties. Acts of making visible have always entailed the erasure and invisibility of racial minorities. American society has also routinely trespassed on customary areas of reserve. A nation intolerant of the hidden paradoxically pioneered the legal concept of privacy, but it did so in reaction to its own invasive excesses.
