Poor Figures.......2007-01-11
The text content of this book is informative, succinct and useful. However the figures are all very blurry and it is almost impossible to get much out of them. This is too bad since it seems that the authors intended to convey a lot of information through the many figures. Until this is fixed, I wouldn't recommend wasting good money on the book.
Good book for design concepts.......2006-06-30
It is agood book to know the design concepts.Although the print is not clear but the website provides most of the Block diagrams.
Recommended reading for anyone developing and designing using LabVIEW.
great content, bad printing quality.......2006-03-16
The content is very helpfull for the design of professional application. The software design approach kills finally the idea that Labview is just a nice and funny toy ! This request a rigorus approach to the programming as in all the others languages and allow to produce efficient and reusable code.
Unfortunately the printing quality is very bad, the figures are unreadable and you need the source code to understand something.
It is really a pitty !
figures are bad, but everything is also online!.......2006-03-08
This book was a quick read, rather short. About half of the book goes over actual programming concepts, and the other half goes over a long design example scenario. The book is written in a fun engaging way, but in my mind the book costs a little too much for such a short read.
Coming in, I was an intermediate Labview user, and the book has opened my eyes to some better ways to program.
For those of you complaining about the quality of the figures, visit the website at authors.phptr.com/watts. Note that there is a typo in the URL on the back cover!
Figures in book are unreadable.......2006-02-25
The book is very well written but the reproduction is horrid. Very few of the figures are readable. It looks like a particularly bad reproduction on a poorly tuned copier. Prentice Hall should refund my money except they refuse to even acknowledge my complaint. I have since found out from a LabVIEW user group that except for an early printing, all of the books are very poorly printed. Unfortunately, the figures contain the most important information. I really wish I could get a clean copy. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK unless you first see the figures!!!! Its vertually useless without readable figures!

Book Description
An extension of Labor Arbitration: An Annotated Bibliography, this volume intends to provide a larger sense of history, of institutional development, and of the abiding questions that have been raised in and about labor arbitration. The editors focus on substantial professional and academic studies of labor arbitration in the United States and Canada, drawing material from books, monographs, analytical articles in professional and academic journals, and selections from the proceedings of the meetings of academic and professional societies. In response to the changing demands made upon arbitrators, the editors have extended their coverage to include alternative dispute resolution and the Americans with Disabilities Act. A large section of the book deals with employment arbitration and matters such as wrongful discharge. Coverage of arbitration outside North America is also expanded in the current volume, which is based upon computer searches of the most widely used data bases and on cover-to-cover searches of the twenty leading journals in the field.

Book Description
“Man’s best friend” is the subject of another fun- and fact-filled book in Potomac's Most Wanted™ series, Dogs’ Most Wanted™: The Top 10 Book of Historic Hounds, Professional Pooches, and Canine Oddities, by Alexandra Powe Allred. Allred provides fascinating details about the history of the canine, from mythological beasts to war and rescue dogs to pampered family pets. With more than seventy top-ten lists on dog trivia, there are more things dog here than at the Westminster dog show in February.
Curious about which breed is right for you? Allred has the facts, with lists on the best breeds for kids, most and least trainable, best and worst watchdogs, and types of dogs working for law enforcement. For you dog owners, Allred has tips on how to keep your dog healthy and what health problems you might share. Dogs are not only our companions but play a role in pop culture as well, and Allred gives full details on Hollywood dogs, all the different Lassies, college-mascot pooches, and tips on how to break your dog into showbiz! She discusses First Dogs of White House lore and famous animated hounds. And because Hollywood doesn’t have a monopoly on celebrated canines, Allred examines the heroic roles dogs have had in war, natural disasters, and everyday bravery.
The old song says, “There was a farmer had a dog and Bingo was his name-o.” If that farmer had a dog book, Dogs’ Most Wanted™: The Top 10 Book of Historic Hounds, Professional Pooches, and Canine Oddities would certainly be the name. Oh!

Customer Reviews:
Ukulele Breakthrough -- making it simple.......2007-04-04
As someone fairly new to the ukulele, a mere 11 months, and I've come across about 300 ukulele players and searched over the internet and purchased books. I also have a small e-mail list of about 25 ukulele friends. I devoted one of my e-mails to the praise and recommendation of this book for presenting the different chord shapes as they are determined by the string where the root note is located.
Calvin Chin has a simple clear style. He presents the chord shapes for the A string in chapter 1 and has songs that practice the chords. The instructions and diagrams are very clear an are just two pages long. Then he uses the same format for the E string, C string and G string in the next three chapters. These first 4 lessons are worth the price of the book. He moves into diminished, augmented, minor 7th's, 6th's, minor 6th's, etc. It is not complex. But does require one to work on muscle memory. This book is full of wonderful stuff. A definite buy for a person that wants to become a better ukulele player. I highly recommend this book.
great book.......2006-10-19
This is really a great book. It's definitely not for beginners. You should have been playing for at least 6 months before you pick up this book. This was the very first ukulele book I bought and I didn't get past the first couple chapters because I couldn't move all over the fretboard. I read all of the instruction without being able to do the excercises and thought the author was nuts if he thoguth I would ever be able to do any of the excercises. I forgot all about the book for about 9 months. Then, I picked it up again and I could actually do the excercises. I'm really starting to learn the ukulele fretboard. The reason I don't give 5 stars is the songs are all so old I don't know any of them and since I can't read music I don't know the melodies, but you can really use any song in the same key to perform the excercises with. If you are serious about your uke, definitely pick up this book.
Tuning.......2006-02-25
This book is written for the soprano and concert ukulele in the GCEA tuning.
Book Description
In the eighty years since Marcel Duchamp drew a moustache on a copy of the Mona Lisa, the dissolving of cultural forms has intensified to the point that there is no longer an absolute, a proper form, anywhere. This generalized breakdown is evident in social and moral codes, in gender distinctions and personal relationships, in politics and economics, in literature, music, dance, painting, and architecture, in our concepts of reality itself.
Is there any sense to be made of this seeming chaos? And if so, can any single theory adequately account for all aspects of the phenomenon? Physicists and mathematicians have informed us that reality is irreducibly complex and plural, unable to be exhausted by any one system of description. Following their lead, Mary Settegast has explored several different ways of looking at the reality of dissolving forms, seeing it as the result of global consumer capitalism; environmental deterioration; the end of a cycle of time; the beginning of a new cycle; a shift in the evolution of human consciousness; and finally, seeing the dissolution of form as a cause for celebration.
Each of these six perspectives is theoretically correct in its ability to explain the breakdown, and each can be supported by the work of twentieth-century artists. Readers are asked to forego the impulse to choose which view they believe to be true and encouraged instead to practice the simultaneous holding of multiple perspectives: Like the Cubist painters of the early twentieth century, who were among the first to recognize the error in a single point of view, we will be trying in these pages to portray our subject from all sides in hopes of capturing it whole.
Customer Reviews:
Explores different ways of looking at cultural forms.......2001-05-23
Mary Settegast's Mona Lisa's Moustache: Making Sense Of A Dissolving World is a fascinating cultural history of the breakdown in art and philosophy of agreed upon absolute and "proper" forms in politics, economics, literature, music, dance, painting, architecture, social codes, moral standards, gender distinctions, and personal relationships. Settegast explores several different ways of looking at the reality of these dissolving social and cultural forms to determine the root causes of this twentieth century phenomena and finding them in the rise of global consumer capitalism, environmental deterioration, millennial time cycles; the evolution of human consciousness; and the widening popularity among the intelligencia of dissolution of form as cause for celebration. Articulate, insightful, iconoclastic, occasionally inspiring, Mona Lisa's Moustache is highly recommended reading for students of popular culture, philosophy, esthetics, art, and ethics.

Book Description
Electronic Media has called Wayne Freedman probably the premier local TV news feature reporter in the country - and he's put those celebrated feature techniques to use in writing everyday news, as well. he's won 41 Emmy Awards, 11 of them for newswriting. And while no book can convey all the lessons he's learned through his years of experience, It Takes More Than Good Looks will give working and aspiring journalists a good sense of how he's found such success - and how they, too, can survive and thrive in the maddening, exhilarating world of television news.
Customer Reviews:
Interested in aspiring to the next level of television reporting? .......2007-09-28
Don't read this book just once. Read it twice, and then maybe even once more. Make sure the principles and teachings of Mr. Freedman are so ingrained in your mind, you apply them in the field, and during the writing process, with ease, despite any pressures or deadlines. Why? Because it takes more than good looks to succeed at television news reporting.
Wayne's the real deal!.......2007-06-06
Wayne Freedman is a rare gift in television news reporting, a polished gem of a reporter with an amazing eye and ear and professional aesthetic. He's a wonderul storyeller with what may be the largest collection of Emmy awards for television reporting on the planet...deservedly so, he's that good at what he does, they should just mail them to him every year.
I'm a former television producer and news director and I've always greatly admired Wayne's work, and his ability to sweep the Emmy awards every time. He's consistently brilliant and can turn the most mundane topic into a memorable visual story. His book is required reading for my television journalism students and should be read and re-read by every aspiring or novice television journalist, along with many veterans. This book makes teaching 'basic training' to up-and-coming video journalists MUCH easier. Not only is this book useful and a peek into a bright creative mind, it's just a good read...entertaining and hard to put down, with lots of great stories and insight! It's a keeper.
It Takes More Than Good Looks To Succeed at TV News Reporting.......2006-11-04
I bought this book for my sister. She completed her education in the journalism field. When she got the book as a gift, she immediately realized it is one of the best books she has ever come across related to her field. She could not put it down and now uses it as her main reference book.
Inspiring, Instructional, Entertaining, and Very Realistic.......2005-10-02
If you're an aspiring television news reporter, or working as one and hoping to move into a major market, read this book. The meat of it is inside the anecdotes.
Freedman describes the process of finding stories, large and small. He writes in detail about interviewing, story structure, and all the finer points of narrative writing. The bookk is packed with helpful hints for performance issues such as stand-ups, live shots, and vocal styles. "If you don't like the way you sound, look at the words you choose," he writes.
The book is idealistic, but competely truthful about succeeding and surviving in an imperfect business. For example, "It's fairly easy to please the boss who hires you. The test is to satisfy that new boss who replaces the old one."
Here's another. "Sometimes we forget our employers pay us, not for doing the perfect story, but for hiding flaws and doing the best story possible within a set of restraints."
That's the real stuff.
I have 15 years experience as a reporter and also teach broadcast journalism. This book is on my syllabus because it does NOT read like a textbook. Its cast of characters includes Bill Clinton, The Pope, Cal Ripken, Jr.---and dozens of regular, fascinating people. The first chapter, in which he outwits the United States Golf Association to expose their cover-up of a broken US Open trophy, is a timeless lesson about how to hustle under daily deadline pressure.
Brilliant........2003-12-27
Here's a "text book" that reads with the thunder of a good page-turner. You'll laugh, you'll cry... and you'll learn. Wayne Freedman is a brilliant visual reporter who's managed to translate his craft -- and his love of a good story -- into print. Best of all, if local news reporters follow his instructions, a lot of us will start watching TV news again!

Customer Reviews:
Don't Buy This Book.......2007-09-30
I bought this book for a Photoshop class and after wasting $40 We found out that there are several versions of this book and our class is on many different books all going different directions. I was stupid to assume that this book was a compilation of several of the Revealed books, that's somewhat true but when I got to chapter 6 of my assignments, surprise! NO CHAPTER 6 OR BEYOND. The books are eclectic and miss many steps along the way costing the reader loads of wasted time figuring out what you should have been instructed to do by the book. Isn't that what we pay for?? If you're an instructor who hates their students, or a student who likes to learn everything the hard way , I highly recommend this book.
You Are Better Off Using the Dummies Series of Books.......2007-06-27
This books was required for a primer glass in graphic design. In the class, we learned to use both Photoshop and Ilustrator, two of the most powerful raster and vector graphics packages available.
The problem with the book is its lack of description, it's lack of explication. Within three pages of the Photoshop section, I was completely lost. This meant a trip to the library to find another textbook that explained what these authors did not. That led me to the CS3 Dummies books, and a far better understanding of the material.
I suggest with all my heart that instructors not use this poorly written book in your classes. You are better off with either the "Dummies" or "Classroom in a Book" series.
You poorly serve your students with this garbage.
There are Two versions BEWARE.......2006-09-02
So I bought this book for a class, only to find out that I had purchased the black and white version, that does not come with a disk.
I guess thats why I only paid $ 20.00 for the book. Un benknownst to me the actual version that I needed was the deluxe Education edition. Who Knew?
As far as a text book...its really no different than any other written aide, which is why I do whatever I can to avoid text book.
If you really want to learn a software program use something like Total Traing DVD packages. I can say from exprience you will not be sorry. Its like being in an actual class and what they teach is not just how the software works but actual applications for the real world.
Its a digital age...dont read it, watch it.
The WORST text book I have EVER had........2006-04-14
This book is an absolute waste of paper. Filled with ugly "designs", it focuses on completely unnecessary details while skipping whole sections of useful information. it seems most concerned with making the student duplicate horrible "projects" exactly down to the pixel... rather than teaching the tools.
Avoid this book! It will drive you insane.
You are better off just using the help system in any of these products... you will learn more...faster...without brain damage.
Someone should have told the author it would print in b&w.......2005-11-07
Apparently no one told Chris Botello his book would be printed in black and white. In chapter 8 it says, "When this book was printed, the CMYK image was printed using all four process inks; the grayscale image was printed using only black ink." Sadly, both images were printed using only black. This isn't a huge problem except in illustrations where he refers to a certain color guide or box. I never had too much trouble figuring out what he was refering to because it's written in a very comprehendible way. The only other problem I had with the book may be related to the color/b&w issue as well. There is nothing differentiating tool names from the rest of the text in a sentence. Perhaps the tools were originally a different color from the rest of the text. We'll never know. This wasn't too much of problem except in sentences like, "Simply float the Type on a Path Tool pointer over the path until a plus sign appears beside the pointer, then click the path." I spent several minutes searching the menus for a Path Tool pointer to float my type over before I realized "Type on a Path Tool" is the full name of the tool. These issues haven't been too much of a problem. I still feel I'm learning the program sufficiently. It justs slows me down a little.
