Not much use for any design work G. Randy Slone's book much better.......2006-03-13

I purchased this book along with High Power Audio Amplifier Construction Manual by G. Randy Slone.If you want to read about
300 pages of information you can obtain free from Mr. Self's website then buy all means by this book because it is a repeat of the blamless amplifier theory, however if you really want a design book with the whyfore's included Mr. Slone's book is the book for you and should rate 10 stars for audio design. I really don't understand why Amazon hyped this book. I should have saved my money I expected more from Mr. Self.

This is the third edition and so the reviews prior to 2002 are for earlier editions. The author makes equipment for recording studios.

The book discusses the different alternatives for circuit topologies used in audio amplifiers and their advantages and disadvantages. There are many SPICE simulation graphs with associated discussions.

Considerations on the book.......2006-02-23

The book is very deep in some topics but is very poor in design formulas. The formulas should be included, explained and can be skipped by the readers who are not keen on mathematics.
Some schematic diagrams are simply not readable as the printing size, or the book format, is too small.

Dissppointed for the Fourth Edition.......2005-08-26

If you have a third edition, you should keep using it. I should have kept the $ in my pockey. :(

The newly added Class-D chapter is rather short and trivial. It is just an introduction to Class-D concept. This can be found easily elsewhere. No research, experimental and test results! Disappointed! Has the author listened to current high performance Class-D solutions (like ICEpower, Hypex)?

The other new chapter, DC servo, does contains test/new results. You will learn some useful techniques.

The author should correct some problems (printing, inconsistency between text and figure) that exist in third or earlier editions. However, he didn't. Why?

Lastly, it is still highly recommeded for new readers.

Recommended reading for anyone who wants to design an amp.......1999-05-13

This book is not a "cookbook" approach, but presents well researched and tested approaches. As such it is guaranteed to offend some people (evaluation of design changes and improvements is scientific, as opposed to subjective). Self uses the book to take a shot at much of the patently mumbo-jumbo in high end HiFi, which is entertaining! The book features the "blameless" amplifier and the circuit is given, but it would have been nice for the PCB layout (or a Gerber file..) to be included so that some quick experimentation can be done. The only minus (apart from that) is that there some areas not treated: Nested Differential Feeback loops being one. A very unique book, collecting together a lot of very valuable information.

Community engagement in building a living democracy.......2002-06-11

This is a compelling read for anyone concerned about making democracy work to the benefit of their entire community. First a Dream tells the heartwarming and instructive story of how the people of Belevedere and Tiburon in Calfornia's Marin County dared to believe that they could build cooperatively a grass-roots community library that reflects and serves their diverse population in extraordinary ways. It is heartwarming to read how their community library, serving two quite different towns, engages and invigorates a remarkable number of their citizens in reading, the arts, and community improvement projects. It is instructive to see what it takes to build such a learning community into the roots of a society: a vision, extraordinary commitment and perserverence, flexibility, imagination and time.

This is one of the better guides I have seen on how constructively to involve an entire community in building its own living democracy. There are exciting and useful lessons here for anyone who is ready to engage in strengthening their neighborhood, town or society.

A True Study in Community.......2002-06-08

It is my good fortune to be the Director of the Belvedere-Tiburon Library, an independent community library created by the citizens of two adjoining municipalities in southern Marin County, California chronicled in "First a Dream". I am very proud of "First a Dream: A Community Builds a Library" and grateful to the people who made it possible. It is the inspirational and instructive story of the development of the library which opened its doors in April, 1997. It is also a study in community-building, local values, public spirit, and long-term commitment. The residents of the communities came together in thought, experience, and action to fill a need they both shared and worked together to finance, build and operate a new library. To achieve this, more than ten years of volunteer time and effort were given by hundreds of people.

The library is a partnership of the two municipalities and reflective and representative of both. It is a community gateway and cultural center, a place of shared responsibilities and benefits. Today there are more than two hundred residents serving on twenty+ committees and each is vested in maintaining the excellence of this library. In creating their own library, the citizens of Tiburon and Belvedere demonstrated something basic and good about people and communities, about social democracy and its power and glory. It shows that local community activists can take matters into their own hands and achieve something remarkable.

this guy has nailed it, no need to go into huge detail simply put this is a book on a par with Motley Crue's The Dirt.
The 70s part is great but when Konow hits the 80s, chuff me in was in heaven.

Not Dated, A very accurate portrate of what happened to metal.......2006-03-15

Unlike other music books, this is not out of date the time it hits the shelf because it ends in the mid-90's when metal lost its mainstream audience.

It is not written with any theogical mentallity, but just stating the facts and leaving the reader to make up his or her judgement. For that it deserves a 5.

I won't give the book away. While well written with cronological format starting with the late 60's and pays attention to the British heavy metal element, specifically with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal; it concentrates on the LA/Hair band scene, which is where the biggest media popularity e.g. MTV surrounding the genre was, and led to its downfall.

The fall of heavy metal was no different than the fall of alot of genres where big business was involved, as well as the audience that was attacted to its rise.

For instance, what was not mentioned in the book was Whitesnake who for years played quality blues metal, yet only made it big when they became hair band with looks, flash but very little substance.

Decent but not great........2005-02-05

The best parts in this book are the stories and anecdotes about the bands or the individuals in the bands. Vince Neil is protrayed as the butt of a joke and David Lee Roth is portrayed as a spoiled rich kid turned professional jerk. The stories of the bands are entertaining, because it allows the reader to see just how ridiculous some people can be. However, the book falls short on many levels. Some of the most talented bands of Metal only receive very small sections of the book. I believe that Iron Maiden has a page. Judas Priest has a paragraph. Motorhead, while very influential is only mentioned in sections. The core of the book is made of the L.A. scene, focusing on bands such as Ratt, Motley Crue and Guns and Roses. While these bands were good, they were not the only Metal around in the 80's.
Another disturbing aspect of the book is that Konow claims that Metal was wiped out by the Seattle scene. This is untrue. Konow ignores that Pantera's album, "Far Beyond Driven" debuted at number one the week it was released. Konow also fails to acknowledge that Slayer released some of their most ferocious work in the 90's. I will say that Metal was not as mainstream in the 90's, however to say that it was dead is preposterous. David Konow has written for Guitar World magazine, which I used to read. The late Dimebag Darrel once wrote columns for the magazine well in to the 90's. Dime once said something along the lines of, "Some people think that Metal is Dead, but Metal ain't all assed up yet." I would say to potential readers, that this book is fair. If you want a better read then first check out, "Sound of the Beast" first. That book covers all genre's of metal fairly well and you get more of a history as opposed to the tabloid feaud-like rivalry that "Bang Your Head" offers.

I had a great time reading this book! Not only does it deal with the Hollywood hair metal scene, it writes about a lot of various bands from other cities and styles that were as big as Bon Jovi & Metallica, and some of them less popular, like Armored Saint. It starts off with the early bands, like Sabbath, Led Zep, Kiss and Alice Cooper and ends with the Grunge movement - it even goes beyond and touches on slightly more contemporary bands. The book is full of very entertaining and shocking stories! It takes a look at how some of these bands formed, went on to success and (in some cases) were destroyed by inner-conflicts. Besides band members they got interviews from producers, promoters, club owners, managers, industry people, etc. So if you are a fan of bands like Twisted Sister, Ratt, Ozzy, Dokken, Guns N' Roses, Malmsteen, Warrant, Megadeth, Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Exodus, Van Halen, Poison, etc. then this will be a great read for you! The only problem I had with this book is that it barely mentions any European bands from the '80s (like Helloween, Iron Maiden, Accept or Running Wild) or does so in passing. This is like reading a history book on North American Metal! Good stuff!

This is an amazing book. If you like heavy metal, this book has inside information on all of the important events and the motivations behind them. I have other books on this subject, documentaries, behind the music episodes, music magazines, and there is info in here that you simply cannot find elsewhere, such a description of a fistfight between George Lynch and Don Dokken in a limo.

If you like Heavy Metal, YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK. I have loaned it to 4 people, and they all loved it. The people who do not like this book simply do not like 80s metal, and they are the fools for buying a book on a genre that they do not enjoy. No one who likes this music would be shallow and pretentious enough to call it "hair metal" when hair had nothing to do with the music. Notice the negative reviews below are from people who use the term. Go figure.

I usually steer clear of web site directory books because they become obsolete very quickly. This book presents more than lists of sites. It contains some unusual and even provocative information concerning whether it is preferable to read in hardcopy or online; it also has interviews with people who create content at the freebie sites and this gave me a fresh perspective on the availability of free resources. The best thing is that isn't chock full of screenshots, it's full of information.

I spend a lot of hours searching the web for work. I bought a copy of this book and it kept disappearing off my desk--borrowed by co-workers. Now I keep it locked in my desk drawer--they'll have to buy their own copies! Well done, Nicholas and Barbara! Hope to see more of your books in print.

I was lucky enough to be given this book as a gift, because my parents know that I often use the web to locate information for school projects. It has tons of useful websites and is well-organized. I definitely recommend it.
