This book is not as good as the authors previous effort Basic Electricity (ISBN 0790610418).

The current book is divided into 5 volumes or parts:

1. Overview, Basic Concepts, intro semiconductors, power supplies, batteries
2. basic amplifiers, audio amplifiers, audio systems, hi-fi, video/if/rf amps + oscillators
3. Transmission: radio waves, antennas, AM, FM, TV transmission
4. Receivers: antennas, AM. FM, TV, video devices
5. digital electronics, computers, microprocessors

Book has lots of diagrams like Basic Electricity but there are many more "block diagram" type drawings. Sometimes they describe what's going on inside the blocks but often these descriptions are too general or assume too much knowledge on the reader's part.

Basic Electricity was much better that way in that they gave an exhaustive description of how everything worked.

Amplifier discussion centers around BJTs with little mention of JFETs or MOSFETs.

Not many exercises to do either unlike the revised and updated version of the Basic Electricity book.

Good points - parts concerning Troubleshooting are very well done just like in Basic Electricity. Topic coverage is broad. Most electronics books these days barely cover any applications seemingly only paying heed to that great device the "computer". Part 2 covers hi-fi stereo electronics. Very good discussion here.

For those who DO want an in-depth discussion get the 24 part series Navy Electricity & Electronics Training Series (NEETS). It's excellent. It devotes the requisite number of pages to decently cover the topics. found on eBay & on the web.

Van Valkenburgh et al. have 2 other books that might be of interest: "Basic synchros and servomechanisms" & "Basic Electronics" both published in 1955. Second book covers vacuum tube based equipment.

In short, "Basic Solid State Electronics" is like a travelogue: sure, you get to see the high points but you don't get enough detail. maybe that's expecting too much from it.

Good for Self Study.......2002-05-27

Yes, 5 stars, but it depends on what you're looking for. This is a very good intro to Electronics concepts and systems. It doesn't go into great technical detail, but I find I understand a topic better if I read a book like this first, then progress on to more sophisticated treatments. It gives you a high-level understanding of the topic and keeps you from getting bogged down in the weeds. There are a lot of pages, but it's a quick read. If you're fairly new to amplifiers, oscillators, transmitters, receivers, etc., go thru this first, then select something like "Art of Electronics" for the follow-up.

Worst electronics book ever!.......2001-06-27

Save your cash, this is a terrible book. It's just a collection of bad circuits with almost no explanation. Most important topics are just casually covered with insufficient detail. The circuits are confusingly drawn and most are poorly designed. Get a good book like "The Art of Electronics", don't waste your money like I did, stay away from this one!

i was in a class musical and i fell in love wiht the music from the play Once on This Island, months later i decided to get this book just so i could sing the songs, it has all of the famous (favourite) songs, waiting for life (a stranger in white), walk with me, and others. the only thing i found wrong was soe of the notes sounded different than on the cd. but oh well, nothing is perfect, they are great songs, very catchy, buy the book. :) -kara

At the same time a reading of Kenneth Burke and of tourist landscapes in America, Gregory Clark's new study explores the rhetorical power connected with American tourism. Looking specifically at a time when citizens of the United States first took to rail and then highway to become sightseers in their own country, Clark traces the rhetorical function of a wide-ranging set of tourist experiences. He explores how the symbolic experiences Americans share as tourists have helped residents of a vast and diverse nation adopt a national identity. In doing so he suggests that the rhetorical power of a national culture is wielded not only by public discourse but also by public experiences.

Clark examines places in the American landscape that have facilitated such experiences, including New York City, Shaker villages, Yellowstone National Park, the Lincoln Highway, San Francisco's 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and the Grand Canyon. Love Ellen is a beautiful story about the unbreakable bond between mother and daughter. No matter how difficult the challenges faced by either Betty or Ellen their love has always remained strong proven in this eye opening book. So many times we read about celebrities lives and are only shown a small portion of their emotions as though they need to hide their most sensitive side from public view. Love Ellen is an exception to that as we see a side of both women as they truly are: sensitive, emotional and very human. Read for yourself the laughter, sadness and tears as you explore their journey together. You will come away with the realization that no matter how difficult your own struggles there is help for you if only you can open your heart and trust. As you get to know the DeGeneres family you will realize they are just as ordinary as the rest of us. I highly recommend this book for those who need help coming out, loved ones needing a better understanding of homosexuality and that it is not a choice, but rather just another side of many individuals and also to fans of Ellen's who just want to explore who she is and how she made some of the most difficult decisions of her life. Description

The book has six parts.
The first part says that because web users are willing to wait for at most eight seconds and many use a 56.6Kbps modem, web pages should be at most 30KB in size.
The second part lists tricks how to write shorter html.
The third part lists tricks how to write shorter css and javascript.
The fourth part discusses graphics and multimedia optimization.
The fifth part explains methodically how to make your web come up high in search engines.
The sixth part details some server-side tricks for Apache.

Comment

This book concentrates almost exclusively on sending fewer bytes from the server to the browser. It gives a large collection of tricks how to write shorter html, xhtml, css, and javascript. Some of these tricks are useful. Others however go against standards, and some seriously go against maintainability. I'd be reluctant to give this book to my team. One may be tempted into shaving off bytes, spending a big effort and yet producing unmaintainable code. Unless one has a strong sense of relevance, one can be caught up in technical dispersion.

If you want to send fewer bytes, standard gzip-compression is far better than eliminating line-breaks and indentation.

The book does not go into server-side programming. It is oriented towards optimization of static pages.
With this orientation, King makes some bad recommendations. For example, he recommends writing javascript without comments, rather then recommending server-side comments that are not sent to the browser.

The book predates AJAX-like techniques.

Who should read it?

The book is useful for the person that writes the html that will be sent to the browser, if that person has a good sense of relevance.

I can't argue with the strengths of the book which is detailed in the number of excellent reviews here, as they are all true. I bought the book based on those reviews, and while they are true, I still feel cheated.

In today's world, where "standards based" coding is becoming more prevalent and adherance to the W3C standards for HTML coding is being recommended, this book just grated on me. While there is a great deal of great information, there are also a large number of "gotchas" to watch out for as well.

The book proposes to use HTML tags without their corresponding closing tags, not to use required elements whenever possible, avoid using quotes in HTML tags, and many other ways of creating "non-valid" code. This will "optimize" your code a bit more by reducing the characters in it, but it will also create problems for you in the future.

In summary, while the book does give alot of good information, it often steers you away from standard code. If you are unsure what is considered "standard" and required for creating valid XHTML/CSS, you are best served skipping this book as it will teach you to create invalid code. If you know enough about XHTML/CSS to ignore those parts, it's a great book.

The bandwidth you will save on a single month will cover the costs of this great reference. Plus, you get a good overview of search engine visibilty.

Covering a wide variety of techniques, this book describes many of the common causes of slow pages and how to avoid or remedy them. While not specific to load testing, it is a valuable reference for those who have the task of making a site faster. Many of the methods provided here are simple but rarely implemented - they should be!

A MUST read for every web designer and developer!.......2004-04-11

When the GUIguy reviews books, it is usually with the intent of reading fairly quickly to get a sense of the author's approach, their writing style, and the value of the content.

When I picked up Speed Up Your Site: Web Site Optimization, an amazing thing happened: I was captivated by the content and the style. Amazing! A first! I found myself reading every word and every line of code, lest I miss some gem hidden within the letters.

Andy King's basic premise is clearly stated: "At current bandwidth-to-CPU speed ratios, bandwidth is the limiting factor." Therefore, optimization of code is vital for a well-received web site.

Sure, that's easy to write, but how do you do it?! The author meticulously goes through many, if not all of the ways code can be streamlined, addressing HTML, XHTML, DHTML, CSS, and even more.

As for style, you can almost hear the author talking; the conversational tone pervades the tome. The book is a delight to read, and the text is peppered with subtle and not-so-subtle humor like "Link to external style sheets site-wide to cache in." Even code snippets are occasionally injected with nostalgia and rib-ticklers. (There is a reference to Burma Shave signs-search the web if you don't know what that is- and even the Emperor with No Close. (sic))

And for those who wonder why all this optimization is important, the author opens with two chapters on the Psychology of Performance, with well-researched excerpts and citations from human factors writings. The forward is even written by usability guru Jakob Nielsen.

There is a companion site (http://www.speedupyoursite.com) that contains all the code along with all the references, chapter summaries, chapter excerpts, color figures, etc. After all, web sites are living documents, and having all this information on a web site allows it to be updated easily.

The only flaw that I found with the book is that there is no accompanying CD. I would love to be able to search the complete text for suggestions and tips that I probably won't remember when I need them-like when I redo my own web sites, a job that I must undertake now that I have read this book.
