Book Description
The first biography on the quintessential alternative rock band Belle Sebastian According to a July Entertainment Weekly article, alternative rock is to music today what Britney Spears was to music in the late 90s. Maybe that's why the indie-pop group Belle Sebastian's fifth full length album sold over 280,000 copies in its first month on sale. Maybe it's their legions of cult-like fans who have followed the group since their first album in 1996 or their presence in such tweener hits as The O.C., The Gilmore Girls and The Gossip Girl series, that has turned this once word-of-mouth sensation into an icon of indie-rock.
Customer Reviews:
Not perfect, but worth reading.......2007-06-17
I'm quite a big Belle and Sebastian fan, so when I saw this book sitting on a shelf at a local bookstore, I did not hesitate to buy it. I liked that Whitelaw was able to interview members of the band (sans drummer Richard). What I found slightly annoying was his evident bias towards certain band members. He tended to place Stuart Murdoch in a sort of demi-god-like, affectionate manner (Stuart M is usually referred to as "The Curious Boy"), while Isobel Campbell tended to be portrayed as a whiner, or some sort of a useless appendage. I thought it quite annoying that he was unable to keep his opinions out of his descriptions of band members or certain scenes.
During certain moments of the book, I felt as if I was reading a tabloid magazine. Take that as you will.
Overall, this is a great book, which gives the reader a great idea of how Belle and Sebastian formed and grew as a band. Your interpretations of Belle and Sebastian songs may differ from Whitelaw's, but it is quite fun to see how different people view different songs.
It's 3 stars, which means wait for paperback or buy used..........2006-03-28
Okay, I love B&S and looked forward to reading this book. However, the meat of the story is constantly obscured by billions and billions of quotes from songs, and with all the member-switching the band has been through the device of inserting a 2-4 page mini-biography on the newest member before then returning to the main plot was disconcerting...not that I really know how I would of got away from that, but it made frustrating reading. The author is not the objective type at all, painting albums I _thought_ were classic with a brush of "Really not their best work at all" and really deriding Isobel (sometimes fairly, sometimes not). Good, but not great.
Pretty good read for fans only...if you can stand the typos and factual errors.......2006-03-23
Anyone who isn't a fan would find this book totally boring. It gives a decent bio of the band. However there are glaring typo's. Whitelaw writes that Isobel leaves B&S after the Toronto show in May of 2001. I was at that show and after some investigating found that it was May 2002. A few pages later He writes something like "As the bus pulled out of Montreal sans Isobel..." Um, hello!? Isobel left the band in Toronto! He also writes that God Speed you black emperor! are an American band, but any hipster worth his weight will tell you that they are from Montreal Canada. I'm sure there are many more mistakes in the book that others have noticed. A bio is all about the facts, you must nail the facts, and Whitelaw fails miserably in this department. Oh, and his alliterations become annoying after awhile.
Dear Catastrophe Author.......2006-01-05
The best review was written below by Peter Arnold. While in total agreement with that reviewer, I just want to add a few things. Mainly, that reading this book feels like reading one very, very long NME review - the word play is suprisingly annoying and difficult to read when one just wants to understand a simple point. This kind of word play is fine for a one paragraph review in a rock & roll magazine, but wasteful within a book format. The little bits which are written in italics are especially wasteful and dramatic.
The author also had a tendency to portray band relationships in a gossipy way. While the dynamics of the band's friendships and romances are at first interesting and an important part of the history, the author tends to go on and on and rehash the same old thing even at the end of the book. He clearly disliked Isobel Campbell which made me wonder, was he emotionally involved with her? Did she scorn his romantic advances? Heehee, now I'm playing like the author!
In short, I would have valued more quotes from the band, none of the author's opinions, and a more straightforward manner of writing. Bottom line; Belle and Sebastian are one of my most beloved bands of all time and despite a frustratingly written book, it was still a pleasure to learn about them.
A great read for B&S fans.......2005-09-29
I was surprised by the Publishers Weekly review Amazon used at the start of this listing. I found the band members remarkably candid in the book. Publishers Weekly found the author "annoyingly reverential" to the band? This book hardly portrays the band as flawless human beings- perhaps they're not flawed enough to provide enough dirt to keep Publishers Weekly interested. I found the book enhanced my appreciation of the band and filled in some biographical details (including the band's influences) that I'd wondered about. Great stuff!

Book Description
Stephen King’s popularity lies in his ability to reinterpret the standard Gothic tale in new and exciting ways. Through his eyes, the conventional becomes unconventional and wonderful. King thus creates his own Gothic world and then interprets it for us. This book analyzes King’s interpretations and his mastery of popular literature. The essays discuss adolescent revolt, the artist as survivor, the vampire in popular literature, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Too much intellectual tinkering, but a few great ideas.......2001-08-07
A fascinating collection of studies on Stephen King, though, by now a little old. The first intention is perfect : to take Stephen King seriously and to study him as a social, cultural and literary phenomenon, particularly in his multimedia dimension.
The first idea is essential : Stephen King is the son of a tradition that goes far back in US history. He is in no way a new phenomenon. He has to be studied as the heir of this tradition. But he melts two approaches together : the horror tradition and the melodramatic (I would prefer social or sociological or even psycho-sociological) treatment of his characters and themes. That's absolutely true of all his novels. We are in the real world, even when it is a fantasy like in the Dark Tower series.
The second idea is just as important : the impact of Stephen King on the modern world is enormous. He sells millions, tens of millions of volumes. His films are blockbuster successes. He touches an enormous proportion of the public. I disagree though with the fact that his main audience would be, on one side, middle class women looking for romance, with a touch of horror, and, on the other hand, teenagers looking for strong emotions. As for teenagers it is a lot more complex. They are looking for direct commerce with death and suffering in a world where such things seem so remote from our everyday life. As for middleclass women, it is totally wrong. Stephen King has capitalized over the decades on his younger public to touch now practically all segments of adult society.
The third idea is that there is a parallel between Stephen King's approach of the cinema, his critical reading of films (Danse Macabre) and Freud's approach of dreams, his reading of drams. This is absolutely dangerous. No we cannot and must not psychoanalyze Stephen King from his books. This is childish. And no, the parallel does not exist : it is intellectual tinkering. We cannot deal with a book or a work of art the way Freud dealt with a dream. The writing of a book is at least subconscious and most of it is conscious. A dream is necessarily unconscious. A dream has a purely pictorial, situational and impulse-driven syntax, whereas a book or a film is a lot more than that : it is language and as such has one syntax. It is situations and images (projected and recreated at times in the imagination of the reader), and these have a twofold syntax : that of the author and that of the reader or viewer. A book can be read against the conscious intention of the author. Finally a book does not reflect the unconscisous impulses of the author, but the subconscious, conscious, and at times but rarely unconscious personal positioning of the author within the contradictions of himself, society and his relations with society.
Finally, the fourth idea is that Stephen King has a fully developed style and this is absolutely right, and that is why his books are selling so much.
Just as Shakespeare was not THE Shalespeare of his times, Dickens THE Dickens of his times, Stephen King is not THE Stephen King of his times. But just as Shakespeare is a universal genius, Dickens another and Whitman (who was nearly nothing in his days) a third TODAY, Stephen King will be such a universal genius in maybe less than fifty years, because he gives us a full picture of America, of its nightmares and its dreams, but also a universal picture of bad and evil at work in both society and man (or woman or children). And this is my conclusion. Stephen King can be disliked by some and loved by others, just like any author was in their days, and he will still be disliked by some and loved by others fifty years after his death, but he will then be an unavoidable author both about today's America and about the universal divided nature of man (woman or children).
Dr Jacques COULARDEAU
I wish S.K. wrote this!.......2000-03-28
It was bad. Don't get it. If Stephen King wrote it it would be 10 times better.

Book Description
The world's best-selling iPod book is back and fully updated with all the new iPods and features in iTunes 7. This book is so popular because it is a book of a different breed. There are basically two kinds of iPod books: (1) The "tell me all about it" kind, which includes in-depth discussions on compression algorithms, debates about analog vs. digital equalizers; and tutorials on how to export your playlist in Unicode format. (2) There's this book. It's not a "tell me all about it" book, it’s a "show me how to do it" book. Award-winning author Scott Kelby shows you step-by-step how it's all done, using the same casual, plain-English style that has made him one of the world's best-selling technology authors. You'll learn how to do only the most important, most requested, and just plain cool things you're going to want to do with your iPodâso you can start having fun with it today. Right now! Each page covers just one topic, complete with full color photos, making it easy to find just what you're looking for fast. Plus, it shows you how to get the most from the iTunes Store, how to watch movies and TV shows with your iPod, how to integrate your iPod into your car, which iPod accessories are hot, how to use photos with your iPod, and everything you need to know about the latest models in the iPod family, including the iPod Nano and the re-designed, tiny iPod Shuffle! It's all here, in the only book of its kind, and you're gonna love it!
Customer Reviews:
Buy this book if you have an Ipod.......2007-09-09
I have read 5 books on the ipod and Itunes. This book is by far the best at explaining the AMAZING power of Smart Playlists. The examples show you how you can really manage music in a way you had never thought of.
In addition, though I thought I would hate the one page per subject concept in the end I admit it was excellent. Succinct, to the point and very useful.
I reference it all the time to find some of the useful tips.
The iPod Book: Doing Cool Stuff with the iPod and the iTunes Store, Third Edition.......2007-08-30
I just received a iPod for father's day. I am retired and when not shooting clay targets I read therefore I immediately downloaded two audiobooks and started reading. I also loaded my favorite song from the fiftys. Since I am a novice I purchased the iPod book and it is everything I need to learn how to use my iPod to the best advantage. I highly recommend this book.
Helpful.......2007-08-19
Very helpful book . Give lots of how to advice but written with humor and not just another boring How to book . The book is easy to read and understand .. you will enjoy it and learn a lot about your ipod without the mannual hassle .
Not a whole lot new here.......2007-08-14
This book is great for the novice user. Lots of good info and easier to use than the Apple website I think. If you are looking for a lot of inside info and hot tips it's not here.
This Book is GREAT!!!.......2007-08-06
This book is GREAT!! For the person that knows nothing about ipods. I knew nothing & I know quite a bit now. It's not for the know-it-all. Just for us tech challenged & you don't have to read the chapters in a row you can look for what you are trying to do and do it. I would recommend this to everyone. It's easy to understand without all that tech stuff. Gives simple examples that you can understand. A # 1 in my book!

Great book, if you never had an Ipod before. Covers the basics simply and easily. If you have any basic questions, buy this book USED, get some great tips, and be ahead of the game with the tips from the book and not the cost of a new book.

Great description of features that are not well described in manual.......2007-01-29
This is a great little book that provides lots of good information about the iPod that you don't find in the limited manual that comes with your unit. I was surprised to see an old aquaintance of mine (Terry White) mentioned as a contributer to the book. He is a great guy who I knew would go places.
