Book Description
Ideal for anyone embarking on or considering a career in human services, counseling, psychology, social work, or any of the other helping professions, this book provides an overview of the stages of the helping process, as well as the skills and knowledge required to be a successful helping professional. Drawing on their years of experience, the Coreys focus on the struggles, anxieties, and uncertainties one encounters on the road to becoming an effective helper. The book emphasizes self-reflection on a number of professional issues and challenges the reader to examine their motives for choosing a helping career, and takes a candid look at the demands and strains they'll face in the helping professions.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2001-01-25
This book was the text my instructor assigned in an interpersonal communication class I took a few years ago. It is very readable, as are all books by the Coreys. It covers a wide range of topics and it uses case examples to illustrate the points. It isn't a counselling book in terms of having alot of exercises on questioning or empathy. It does discuss counselling skills, but it is more concerned with the worker's personal development, in terms of ethics, self-awareness, self-care, etc. The suggested activities at the end of the chapter really help the learning process. My only criticism of the book is that a few of the chapters are a tad long.

Book Description
The authors bring this book up to date with the medical and psychologial advances over the past ten years, and continues to provide nonprofessional as well as professional counselors with all the essential tools they need to respond to people's problems with intelligence and compassion.
Customer Reviews:
Great Information.......2004-04-23
This book is an excellent collection of sound ideas and advice for people who find themselves in counseling roles. While the premise of the book is not to teach you how to become a licensed counselor, and it is not specifically addressed to the professional counselor, the book contains detailed information about the counseling process and pitfalls amateurs should avoid.
For example, one lesson talks about recognizing our motivation towards serving a given person in need of counseling as a potential "rescue fantasy." That is, as counselors we should evaluate why we are involved in trying to provide counseling. Amazingly, when I analyzed it, much of my efforts to help other people were actually expressions of my own fantsies to "save the world." While the authors do not dismiss our fantasies as valid precursors to helping other people, they do help you put these things into perspective.
I highly recommend you read this book if you are interested in helping other people.
An excellent guide for anyone involved in counselling.......2003-10-17
This books provides a soup to nuts guide for the non professional and professional counseller. It's unique in that it answers every question you could possibly have, concisely and simply. A must read for anyone who help others. You'll be glad you read it.
Highly recommended!.......2003-09-10
This thick and information packed tomb of a book is essential for any individual that practices any sort of counseling!
As I deal mostly with people in religious circles (I'm Clergy), I have found this book to be one of the best reference materials that I have. In fact, I have shared and bought copies of it for my colleagues to peruse.
Highly recommended without any sort of reservation.
Compassionate, Wise, Remarkable.......2002-02-28
Have you ever been drawn into a book because you felt like the author was writing especially for you? *On Becoming A Counselor* is warm, human and engaging. It is written for ANYONE who, without extensive psychological training, comes in contact with troubled or anxious people. This contact may be in a work setting, or across the back yard fence: the confused, the suffering, the immature who so often look to others for help.
Mr. Kennedy writes that most of the counseling today is done, not be trained counselors, but by folks like you and me, who find ourselves "chosen" by another to hear a painful story, like it or not; that troubled individuals intuitively know how to seek out those who will listen. The work is especially helpful because it answers the one essential question: What can we really do for another?
From the introduction, Mr. Kennedy writes: "There is no disgrace in not being able to remake people...There is every honor, however, in helping persons move even a few inches closer to self-responsibility, in assisting them to turn in a new a healthier direction in life. The curse of the "amateur" therapists is their determination to change people at all costs, and they frequently blunder, trampling on the sacred places of others' personalities in the process."
*Counselor* provides us with the tools we need to respond to other people's problems with compassion and intelligence, and offers advice on how to take care of ourselves in the process. The added bonus is that Mr. Kennedy is a wonderful writer with a gentle sense of humor. The chapter about people who are resistant to help is called, "I Won't Dance, You Can't Make Me."
Mr. Kennedy has written several books about Catholicism and he is not afraid to ask the tough questions. Please don't discount his wisdom because he is a religious writer. *Counselor* is both secular and intensely spiritual. Kennedy's humanity and compassion come through every word of his remarkable 433 page book.
If you are in any field of counseling, or come across troubled souls, then this book is for you. A real treasure house of wisdom for all of us.

Book Description
With the passing of the Soviet state and its promise of a "workers' paradise," what protections remain for Russian labor? Who is best suited to speak for the interests of the workforce in Russia: the old, established unions with their long history of colluding with Communist managers, or the newer, independent unions? Will labor-management relations develop along European-style corporatist lines? Will they evolve in the more adversarial Anglo-American manner? How can American labor unions productively assist their counterparts in Russia? What role should U.S. government agencies play in strengthening worker representation and fostering a climate where collective bargaining in good faith is possible?
Linda Cook sets out to answer these and other questions related to the problems of labor in the new Russia in this fourth book in the Twentieth Century Fund's Russia in Transition series. She recounts the recent history of Russian unionism: the adjustments that the old union federation (now called the FNPR), tainted by its undemocratic nature and its association with the Soviet regime, had to make in order to preserve its dominance and the rise of independent unions and their contribution to supporting economic reform, which tended to strip away the privileges enjoyed by the FNPR. She also examines the political and cultural barriers to further development of trade unionism, such as the lack of an entrenched legal tradition after seventy years of Communist Party rule and the growth of a dynamic but largely unregulated private sector.
Cook reviews the efforts of U.S. government-supported agencies, in particular the AFL-CIO's Free Trade Union Institute, to offer litigation assistance and policy advice aimed at strengthening the capacity of Russian unions to gather vital information, organize, negotiate, and communicate effectively among themselves and with the broader public. She concludes that, of the services provided by the Americans, the ones that have been the most effective and most widely appreciated by the Russians are those that are self-sustaining, such as training and legal advocacy.

Robert Shelton, a critic for the New York Times in 1961, caught an early Bob Dylan gig at Folk City in Greenwich Village and wrote an effusive review for the newspaper. The coverage in the Times was a huge boost to the career of the then-struggling folksinger, and Shelton and Dylan became friends, seeing each other frequently around the Village folk scene. When Shelton, in the 1980s, finally got around to finishing his full-length biography of Dylan, he could draw upon a wealth of insider stories from the early days. The book is naturally strongest when describing Dylan's early career, from his coffeehouse gigs as a Woody Guthrie disciple to the insanely high artistic peaks of the mid-'60s. A particularly engaging passage concerns a freeform interview Shelton conducted with Dylan as they flew high above the Midwest in early 1966; Shelton's memories of Dylan are essential reading for fans. Shelton saw much less of the notoriously private Dylan as the years passed, and the book loses momentum as he becomes less of an eyewitness and more of a distant observer, though Dylan's story is credibly told up through the mid-1980s. --Robert McNamara
Customer Reviews:
All sides and aspects of a cherished and popular figure.......2003-08-10
Expertly written by Robert Shelton (the New York Times music and popular culture reviewer generally credited for "discovering" Dylan in 1961), No Direction Home: The Life And Music Of Bob Dylan is a faithful and definitive biography of the talented artist and his unforgettable music. An extensively detailed chronicle which explores all sides and aspects of a cherished and popular figure in American music, No Direction Home is a welcome addition to 20th Century Music History Studies collections and "must" reading for all Bob Dylan fans.
Not the Place to Start . . ........2003-01-02
. . .start (of course) with the albums, of course, especially "Freewheelin'," "Highway 61 Revisited," "Blonde on Blonde," and "John Wesley Harding," "Basement Tapes," "Blood on the Tracks," "Bootleg Series Vol 4," and maybe "World Gone Wrong." Then check out "Don't Look Back" on DVD. Shelton's book has a lot of great information about Dylan, but it's not the best organized or most concise biography you'll ever come across (maybe it's the editor who worked on the book's fault [?]). It's also now a bit dated, published in 1986. Clinton Heylin's "Man Behind the Shades" (1991) and Howard Sounes' "Down the Highway" (2001) are both more up-to-date and easier reads. Greil Marcus' "Invisible Republic" (1997)does a better job of placing Dylan's music in a historical context. "No Direction Home" is a sprawling collection of interview excepts, biography, oral history, the author's personal recollections of Dylan, musicology, and literary criticism that never really connects the dots, but there is a lot of great information for the experienced or semi-experienced Dylan enthusiast to wade through
Good Not Great..........2002-08-02
Whether or not this is the BEST Dylan biography is hard to say, there are millions of them out there...certainly it has to be the best-researched, and one of the most heartfelt; Shelton gave Dylan his first great review, "discovered" him, in effect, and though he critically assesses Dylan's subsequent works there's never a doubt that he's Dylan's biggest fan. A midnight conversation on a private jet between Shelton and Dylan in the mid-60's is the best thing in the book, fascinating reading...but there is such a concept as too much of a good thing, and the minutae Shelton indulges in gets tiring. He apparently went to every concert and every party Dylan did, and his insistence on inserting himself into the scene makes me wonder about his objectivity. Maybe Shelton thought he was one of the new journalists. I don't know. But less Shelton would've been helpful. Also, Shelton insists on punctuating almost every paragraph with a hidden line from one of Dylan's songs; for awhile it's clever, but it gets old fast.
The book was out of print for a long time, and that's too bad. I hope it stays in print. It's incredibly packed with facts and interpretations and long quotes both from Dylan and those close to him. It's just TOO MUCH, that's all. But good. A worthy biography of the most potent force in popular music since Sinatra. How's that for a name out of left field?
A wonderful observance from a friend.......2001-05-11
I really enjoyed this book. This is the first book I've read about Dylan so I can't say this is the best because I have nothing to compare it with but I found it very enjoyable and I liked the fact that the author is a friend and who acknowledges that so we know from what bias he is writing, a bias I rather enjoyed because there really is no objective way to look at Dylan- it's all subjective and this book is a great subjective overview. I also enjoyed how the author gave his commentary on Dylan's music and lyrics but left room for other interpretations- I think that's how Dylan wants his lyrics to be interpreted- leaving them open for each individual to have his own opinion. It's also cute how the author uses Dylan's lyrics to name his chapters and sections. I recommend this book to anyone who's a Dylan fan and/or interested in the folk/rock music period of the early 60's especially.
Very Good Dylan Biography.......2000-11-12
This is the second best Dylan biography to date (the first being Clinton Heylin's Behind the Shades Revisited). Shelton is obviously a big Dylan fan (no surprise to those knowledgeable about Dylan), and he tends to cover over Dylan's warts. One nice feature is that Shelton includes thoughtful analyses of Dylan's early songs and albums at appropriate times in the narrative. Heavily weighted toward Dylan's early career but entertaining and very informative.

Orchidelirium is the name the Victorians gave to the flower madness that is for botanical collectors the equivalent of gold fever. Wealthy orchid fanatics of that era sent explorers (heavily armed, more to protect themselves against other orchid seekers than against hostile natives or wild animals) to unmapped territories in search of new varieties of Cattleya and Paphiopedilum. As knowledge of the family Orchidaceae grew to encompass the currently more than 60,000 species and over 100,000 hybrids, orchidelirium might have been expected to go the way of Dutch tulip mania. Yet, as journalist Susan Orlean found out, there still exists a vein of orchid madness strong enough to inspire larceny among collectors.
The Orchid Thief centers on south Florida and John Laroche, a quixotic, charismatic schemer once convicted of attempting to take endangered orchids from the Fakahatchee swamp, a state preserve. Laroche, a horticultural consultant who once ran an extensive nursery for the Seminole tribe, dreams of making a fortune for the Seminoles and himself by cloning the rare ghost orchid Polyrrhiza lindenii. Laroche sums up the obsession that drives him and so many others:
I really have to watch myself, especially around plants. Even now, just being here, I still get that collector feeling. You know what I mean. I'll see something and then suddenly I get that feeling. It's like I can't just have something--I have to have it and learn about it and grow it and sell it and master it and have a million of it.
Even Orlean--so leery of orchid fever that she immediately gives away any plant that's pressed upon her by the growers in Laroche's circle--develops a desire to see a ghost orchid blooming and makes several ultimately unsuccessful treks into the Fakahatchee. Filled with Palm Beach socialites, Native Americans, English peers, smugglers, and naturalists as improbably colorful as the tropical blossoms that inspire them, this is a lyrical, funny, addictively entertaining read. --Barrie Trinkle
Book Description
In Susan Orlean's mesmerizing true story of beauty and obsession is John Laroche, a renegade plant dealer and sharply handsome guy, in spite of the fact that he is missing his front teeth and has the posture of al dente spaghetti. In 1994, Laroche and three Seminole Indians were arrested with rare orchids they had stolen from a wild swamp in south Florida that is filled with some of the world's most extraordinary plants and trees. Laroche had planned to clone the orchids and then sell them for a small fortune to impassioned collectors. After he was caught in the act, Laroche set off one of the oddest legal controversies in recent memory, which brought together environmentalists, Native Amer-ican activists, and devoted orchid collectors. The result is a tale that is strange, compelling, and hilarious.
New Yorker writer Susan Orlean followed Laroche through swamps and into the eccentric world of Florida's orchid collectors, a subculture of aristocrats, fanatics, and smugglers whose obsession with plants is all-consuming. Along the way, Orlean learned the history of orchid collecting, discovered an odd pattern of plant crimes in Florida, and spent time with Laroche's partners, a tribe of Seminole Indians who are still at war with the United States.
There is something fascinating or funny or truly bizarre on every page of
The Orchid Thief: the story of how the head of a famous Seminole chief came to be displayed in the front window of a local pharmacy; or how seven hundred iguanas were smuggled into Florida; or the case of the only known extraterrestrial plant crime. Ultimately, however, Susan Orlean's book is about passion itself, and the amazing lengths to which people will go to gratify it. That passion is captured with singular vision in
The Orchid Thief, a once-in-a-lifetime story by one of our most original journalists.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Orchids and those who love them.......2007-09-16
This is an interesting book about the obsessions and lengths of the people who love and collect orchids. There are ups and downs in this account.
The story is well told. The main character is John Laroche, a huckster in trouble with Florida authorities for poaching orchids from public lands. Orlean tells Laroche's story, while using it as a springboard to examine the various aspects of the obsession with orchids some people have. There are stories of orchids being stolen from growers, certain strains fetching high prices from foreign buyers, and an obsession bordering on madness in collectors of the flower. There are very few lengths to which collectors and poachers will not go to get their hands on prize orchids.
Laroche himself is a complicated figure. On one hand, he is a criminal who has always tried to come up with get rich quick schemes to avoid working. He has a broken moral compass and thinks nothing of doing things to people not accepted by society. But, Orlean also explores the backstory that made Laroche who he is. We learn of his failed marriages, bad family life, and the crummy luck he has experienced. He comes out as being a complicated character. By the end of the book, I didn't know if I should root for or against him.
The main drawback is that Orlean sometimes goes into too much detail about side issues and minor stories. These digressions take away from the general flow of the book rather than enriching it.
This is a good nonfiction book, especially for those interested in environmental matters.
Good Writing.......2007-08-21
I expected this to be more about the Orchid Thief, so I was disappointed somewhat by Ms. Orlean's sashaying into Florida history and Seminole history.
When I came to the conclusion that it was as good a book as I'd heard it to be, I was happily surprised!
I've been introduced to hydroponic orchid growing, and it was important to get a feel of the hobby/art!
FORCED TO READ IT.......2007-07-23
this book really didnt keep my interest. but i had to read it for school. so yea.
Watch "Adaptation" after you read it.......2007-07-22
Actually, watch Being John Malkovich before you read it and Adaptation (Superbit Collection) afterwards.
Adaptation deals with the problems that Charlie Kaufman, played by Nicolas Cage, had adapting this book into a screenplay. It is remarkably true to the book, and Meryl Streep is wonderful as Susan Orlean.
I read the book after seeing the film, and wish I had done it in reverse order.
Like many other reviewers, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but have nothing to add to their comments.
Interesting magazine article with a lot of filler........2007-01-04
This book is interesting yet, as has already been mentioned in other reviews, it probably should have stayed a magazine article. The book, which is already printed in large font, has a lot of sections that are obvious filler to increase the page count. I could forgive these off topic filler sections if they were at least entertaining but unfortunately they are not.

Book Description
Bess, George, and I are heading down to Key Largo, Florida, to enjoy some fun in the sun with my old friend, marine biologist Delia Duke. But it seems that Delia's state park is clouded over with mystery: Someone has been poaching the park's rare butterfly orchids. Their future depends on us!
George seems more interested in searching for treasure in the Catalina, an old sunken Spanish galleon, than in hunting for an orchid thief. My hope is that George, Bess, Delia, and I can save two priceless treasures in one fell swoop.

Here Is...The Johnny Carson Show
ASIN: 1581822650 |
Book Description
On May 22, 1992, Johnny Carson emerged from his rainbow-hued curtain, mimed the famous golf swing for the last time, and said good-night to a nation that had stayed up with him for the previous three decades. Long acknowledged as the king of late-night television, he was stepping down from his throne on The Tonight Show and back into private life.
Based on interviews with Carsonthe only one he's ever granted for a bookand more than fifty major celebrities, including David Letterman, Jimmy Stewart, Bob Hope, Jonathan Winters, Betty White, Jack Paar, Phyllis Diller, and Louie Anderson, this book provides a behind-the-scenes look at the longest-running late-night television show of all time and at the man who made it all happen. It is a revision and expansion of a 1992 book that celebrated Carson's years on the show.
More than 200 photographs, most previously unpublished, commemorate the most popular features and most memorable moments from The Tonight Show in the Carson era. Included are The Mighty Carson Art Players, Carnac the Magnificent, Stump the Band, Tiny Tim's wedding, the infamous interview with Arnold Palmer's wife, Ed Ames's notorious tomahawk throw, and much more.
Chapters cover the history and evolution of The Tonight Show. In addition, featured sidebars on celebrities and common folk who appeared on the show, on Carson's infamous feud with Joan Rivers, on Doc Severinsen (including a selected discography), and the many Public Service Announcements are among the many elements that complement the lively text. MORE THAN 150 B&W ILLUSTRATIONS 16-PAGE COLOR INSERT 8 X 10, 224 PAGES PAPERBACK

What a treat!.......2007-06-10
For those of us who grew up with Johnny Carson it's hard to believe that it has been fifteen years since Johnny last came out from behind "The Tonight Show" curtain and even harder to accept the fact that he is no longer with us. But we're in luck in one way....this wonderful book, compiled by Stephen Cox, brings Johnny back to life in the most comprehensive and nostalgic way. It's a walk down Memory Lane and it is nothing short of wonderful.
From the inception of "The Tonight Show" and its early years before Johnny, Cox takes us through every segment of the thirty-year run we all enjoyed. There are comedians, of course, memorable moments, the monologue and my favorite...Joan Embery and her wildlife companions from the San Diego Zoo. Who of my generation can forget the wedding of Tiny Tim and "Miss Vicki" or the Ed Ames tomahawk throw? (the latter being a perennial favorite of the Carson annual retrospectives)
What is such an added bonus to the book are the dozens of photos that grace its pages. "Here's Johnny!" is a terrific look back at a man who made the nation laugh for three decades and who will always be remembered as the best at what he did. Thank you, Johnny!

If you want to know about Johnny Carson and the things that went on behind the scenes at the Tonight Show, you need to get this book!!! It was great and the photos were wonderful.
carson book.......2006-03-11
Excellent read. For any fan of Johnny Carson and the glory days of the Tonight Show, this is the book for you. It makes you feel like you're actually watching the show again. Enjoyed it thoroughly!
Johnny Has Left the Building, but Not our Hearts.......2006-02-21
Johnny Carson was the late night entertainer of my youth and there will never be anyone to compare - although Conan is great in his own right(that will be another review sometime). This book really takes you back. While I do not know all the "for-sure details"(and some things could be slightly off in this book since I don't keep track of that so much), there is enough substance here to take you right back to watching Johnny in your parents' living room! Like the "Clapper Caper" with Jack Webb. LOVED IT!
Here's Johnny is a must have book!.......2005-07-20
With the passing of this legend, this book is a must-have for all Johnny Carson fans, as well as The Tonight Show fans. You'll feel as though you're sitting in the seat next to Johnny, drinking out of a white mug and elbowing Ed McMahon. Author Stephen Cox really shines with this book! Here's the best Tonight Show book you'll ever read!

Customer Reviews:
Exellent book!.......2006-10-20
This book was above and beyond my expectations when i first bought it. It was not incredibly long, yet very thurogh. It explains everything, packets, the network layers, and the internet backbone and how it all connects. It also shows how to use functions built in on your operating system, like ping, trace route, among others. Highly reccomended!
Joy to read!.......2004-12-30
I read the first revision of this book and it was a joy to read. Each chapter is short and fun. It covers just the right amount of material. It is nice to see books that are well written. Although the book is very introductory, you actually learn a lot!
I should have read this one Years ago.......2004-05-02
4.5 STARS
If you want an intro book to:
- Computer Networking,
- how the Internet (www) works,
- TCP/IP Protocol, layers, and utilities,
- Networking Applications
(with lots of diagrams, eye-friendly page layout, extensive index, end-of-chapter summary, Q&A, terminology) then .... you MUST read this book.
Make sure to read the 3rd edition (c. 2004). This edition has some new chapters and material over the 2nd edition and even discusses recent and emerging technologies, and does not spend time going over obsolete protocols or apps.
NOTE: I think this book deserves a 4 1/2 stars because some material (like Encryption part) could have been explained more elegant and easier. Nevertheless the author does an excellent job at providing further references for more detailed analysis (e.g. RFC recommendations).
