A traditional approach with valuable insight.......2001-08-21
It is obvious that anyone who wants to work in sales or marketing should have a superb resume... after all, if you can't sell yourself to an employer, how could you possibly sell their products or services? Thankfully, books like this one exist... you provide the coal (your education and experience), and Lewis and Corwin will fashion it into a diamond (one gem of a resume!).
The first 80 pages of the book are packed with excellent advice on resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, and job hunting. Some of their methods are unfashionable in the current job marketplace (they focus strictly on the chronological resume format, for example, and always include a "references available" statement), but it's generally a bad idea for anyone new to anything to break with tradition. The rest of the book contains 100 sample resumes, nicely categorized by market segment and job description.
Bottom line: if you're looking for a job in sales, marketing, or management, then you can't afford to miss this book.

When the Romans persuade a Gaulish chief to challenge Vitalstatistix to single combat, no one worries much. But then a flying menhir hits Getaflix and he no longer remembers how to make his magic potion. Can Asterix help restore Getaflix’s memory?
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Some of the jokes are so bad in this one that even some of the characters comment on the fact, in-panel.
A Romanophile ambitious chief is being used as a pawn to take over the indomitable Gauls, who have a big problem. Obelix knocked out Getafix, and he has lost his memory, so Vitalstatistix will have to go in the contest of chiefs with no magic potion.
Menhir in the Big Fight.......2007-01-23
"Asterix and the Big Fight" is the seventh Asterix comic in the series, by Rene Goscinny and Albert Udzero, first published in 1966 in French. It's a pretty good one, with lots of gags and setups along the way.
There's an old Gaulish tradition where if one chief challenges another chief to a fight and wins, the winning chief gets the losers village. The Romans hear about this and get a big Gallo-Roman loving chief called Cassius Ceramix to fight against the chief of Asterix's village, Vitalstatistix. There shouldn't be any threat, but Obelix hit their druid Getafix over the head with a Menhir stone and made amnesia. Getafix can't make magic potion for Vitalstatistix's strength, because he can't remember anything. Chaos and panic follows. Will the Gallo-Romans win?
I like all the colours in this one. Worth a read.
Watch that menhir!.......2005-11-30
Rene Goscinny, Asterix and the Big Fight (Orion, 1966)
One of the earlier Asterix books, this one has the village's leader, Vitalstatistix, called out by a rival village leader who's become a pawn to the Romans for a one-on-one fight. All well and good, being the Vitalstatistix, like the rest of his village, is invincible, as long as he has the magic potion-- the only problem is that, thanks to a small fumble with a menhir, Obelix has transformed druid and chief potion-maker Getafix into a drooling idiot. Another druid is sent to cure Getafix, and-- you guessed it-- another fumble, another menhir, another drooling idiot. Can the boys get Getafix back into shape in order to brew up some potion for Vitalstatistix in time for the big fight?
Predictable, of course-- anyone who's watched two or three episodes of a sitcom knows exactly how to cure Getafix-- but the pleasure, as always, is in the journey, not the destination. Another great way to spend time among the gently madcap. ***
Druid amnesia, Romans, and traitors, where will all this end.......2003-12-10
As a child, I read all of the "classic" Asterix books in Swedish. As an adult and now living in the U.S., I am reading them again to my children, but this time in English. This is an old good classic.
Asterix and Obelix live in a village in Gaul that the Romans failed to conquer. The reason for this is that the village druid knows how make a magic potion that that endows the villagers with super human strength. The Romans attempts to conquer the village by using a Gaulish tenet that states that one Gaulish chief can challenge another chief and who ever wins, rules. The Romans find their Gallo-Roman to do the work for them, and to make things worse Obelix knocks out the druid with a menhir who subsequently loses his memory, a bad start for the Gaulish village, but the continuation is exciting and hilarious. All ends well of course.
In general I find that, children the age 5-13 really enjoy these books, and so do my children. Adults can enjoy these books as well. The Asterix comic books are a great way to teach children ancient history. Naturally, the adult needs to help with the differentiation between fiction and history. From these books, my kids have learned about the Roman Empire, the ancient Greeks, the Vikings, the Goths, the Phoenicians, ancient Gaul, ancient Egypt, and the ancient Mediterranean world in general.
My ten year old started loving these books at the age of eight and he cannot get enough of them. My six year old started liking them at the age of five. Even though many Asterix puns may be a little bit above his head, my younger son still loves these stories.
In my opinion the best Asterix albums are: Asterix and the Normans; Asterix in Corsica; Obelix and company; Asterix the Gladiator; Asterix the Legionary; Asterix and Cleopatra; Asterix and the Goths; Asterix in Belgium; Asterix and the big fight; and Asterix all around Gaul. The last title is a translation from Swedish and might be wrong.
Funny, Excellently drawn, Must Have.......2003-01-26
The Romans are upto no good, this time seeking the help of a rival (but loyal to the romans) Gaulish chief to challenge our indominatble chief Vitalstatistix to a fight. The winner becomes chief of both the tribes. The romans take it upon themselves to take the druid Getafix out of commission. they succeed, to some degree. And herein lies the story. One of the all-time favs with Asterix readers, the dialog is funny, the drawings funnier - a must have, must read, must buy... Pity these comics are not very popular in the USofA. In India it is possible to find Asterix comics in almost every decent bookstore :)

Colorful and witty.......2005-08-23
As with all of the Asterix comics, which I have been reading since I was nine, this is a colorful, funny comic with witty, double-entendre dialogue and a point. The illustrations are vivid and colorful, and the story flows rapidly. This one pokes fun at competitive sports, and especially at boxing and wrestling. Or, it could be viewed as making fun of petty political squabbles, like the friction between the Walloons and Flemish in Belgium, or the arguments over almost-meaningless "differences" between political parties in some countries. If you're collecting Asterix comics, this is a must; if you're collecting esoteric comics, this one is a must; if you're unfamiliar with Asterix comics, this one is probably the best starting point for familiarizing yourself with what this series is all about. I wish that more Asterix comics were more readily available, as I've lost some of mine.
One of the best!.......2002-11-26
I have read asterix for around ten years and this is my second favorite. Obelix mistakenly hits getafix and which makes getafix lose his memory of who he is or how to make the magic potion. When this happens the romans make a plan to concure the village. Will getafix regain his memory in time to save the village from becoming sitting ducks? It is full of all the puns and jokes you expect with a asterix book.

Book Description
From their cult status as the serious hippy's favorite psychedelic band to their final days as the champions of fusion, Soft Machine never played the game by the rules.
The book traces the lives of Soft Machine's members, pieces together the band's serendipitous formation and colorful career, and unravels the truth, mystique, and legends. It recounts the incidents and internal tensions that led to an astonishing 24 different lineups, and places Soft Machine's development in the musical and social context of the time.
Lavishly illustrated with over 80 color photographs, posters, and clippings, Soft Machine includes a full Soft Machine family tree, concert file, discography, and sessionography. It is essential reading for any serious fan of rock or jazz.
Customer Reviews:
Engagingly written; an indispensable historical tome.......2007-10-04
Graham Bennett's book Out-Bloody-Rageous is clearly a labor of love, loaded with valuable historical information and quotes from a multitude of interviews with all concerned parties, a well-written, fun to read history with a fan's sympathetic tone, though not uncritical when the need arises. The biggest revelation for me was how the early Soft Machine had significant cultural ties to a great many artists, writers, musicians and movements; everything and everyone from Alfred Jarry's 'pataphysics, Terry Riley's tape loop experiments, Gurdjieff, Ornette Coleman, Elton John, The Proms, Burroughs, Marsha Hunt, the BBC and "My Boy Lollipop" (and so much more) found their way into this band's swirling universe at some point in time. The in-depth accounts of Soft Machine's disastrous late 60s US tours supporting the Jimi Hendrix Experience are alone worth the price of the book. All at once enlightening, charming and in-depth, this is a must for any fan of Soft Machine, psychedelic rock, jazz-rock and European culture of the 60s and 70s.
A Must-Have History of a Must-Have Band.......2007-03-12
If you love the Soft Machine in particular, and the Canterbury music scene in general, you really owe it to yourself to read this thorough and well-researched book. The fact that Daevid Allen and Kevin Ayers are on the cover should tell you that there is a long explanation of the origins and early history of the band, which make for by far the most fascinating reading. This band was truly an artifact of the mid-1960s London psychedelic culture, before settling down into a long stint as a progressive jazz-rock band. While the band was arguably much better in its later jazz-rock incarnations, there was an innocent rawness to those early days that has rarely been captured elsewhere. After you read this book, you will need to buy the compilation CD of the same name, then you should track down "Jet Propelled Photographs" to complete the picture.
Out Bloddy- Rageous.......2006-11-05
Of all the books on bands and or people I have none more exhaustively then this book. It is very well research, full of the smallest details disogaphies, live gigs and interviews. It is the sort of book you don't have read from the begining either you could pick a section and read from there. The writter obviously loves this band and it shows through out. It is as detailed in the early years as it is in the later years. This is the book for fans and lovers of sixties music. Graham Bennett shows respect for their story and music but also the era. It s a lot of fun reading I am sure you will not be disappointed
A fine biography.......2006-07-03
I'm amazed that there's enough interest in this british progressive Jazz-Rock band,so that someone would do a hardcover biography.Author Bennett accuarately covers the many personel changes that took the group from the progressive psychedelic sounds of the Robert Wyatt era, through to the Jazz-Rock fusion of the Karl Jenkins era, which saw the group continue with no original members for several albums, following the departure of founding keyboardist Mike Ratledge.Bennett has interviewed the majority of the musicians who have passed through the group, notably,Robert Wyatt,Hugh Hopper,Elton Dean,Kevin Ayers,Roy Babbington,John Abercrombie and John Etheridge, but Mike Ratledge wasn't interviewed.Apparently, most of the musicians recall a frosty, uneasy atmosphere in the group, and as many members departed for monetary reasons as for musical reasons. There were clashes between the "free-blowing" Jazzers and the song-oriented progressive rockers in the group, and, for many of the musicians, being in the group didn't pay enough money to live on.An exhaustive index of the shows the group played is included,as are some interesting photos. The list of recording sessions tends to suggest that there is little or nothing in the way of studio outtakes from the group's album sessions, though concert tapes and radio/T.V. broadcasts continue to supply prolific flow of CD's.Bennett's book makes the subject matter well worth reading, and leaves you craving more information. But at least we've got this book, the closest thing to an official biography that you're going to get.Out-Bloody-Rageous that this book exists. If you like Soft Machine, you won't be disappointed.
Hard copy at last for Soft Machine.......2006-01-31
I saw Soft Machine open for Hendrix in Cincinnati years ago. I had never heard of them, but they are the ones I remain active fans of. And by association, Robert Wyatt (never knew "Wyatt" was actually his middle name until I read this book) and Kevin Ayers, Hugh Hopper, etc.
Too bad "Soft Machine: Out-Bloody-Rageous" has such a cheap-looking cover (why use such a grainy b&w photo on a book about such a colorful band?), because what's inside is first rate! I actually skipped to the part about first trio version of the Softs (the band I had seen, first hand), read through Hopper's departure, then skipped back to the original quartet. But it's all good, Then there are the extensive discographies, a listing of every performance and recording session, and a section about what the various members are doing now. It's all there. Throughly researched and engagingly written.
Book Description
How is reality really manufactured? The idea of social construction has become a commonplace part of much social research, yet precisely what is constructed, how it is constructed, and what constructionism means are often left unclear or taken for granted. In this major work, Jonathan Potter explores the central themes raised by these questions. Representing Reality explores the different traditions in constructivist thought--including sociology of scientific knowledge; conversation analysis and ethnomethodology; and semiotics, poststructuralism, and postmodernism--to provide a lucid introduction to several key strands of work that have overturned the way we think about facts and descriptions. Potter illustrates his points throughout with varied and engaging examples taken from newspaper stories, relationship counseling sessions, accounts of paranormal events, social workers' assessments of violent parents, informal talk between program organizers, political arguments, and everyday conversations. Representing Reality offers the student and scholar in social psychology, rhetoric and discourse, and related fields a critical introduction to constructivism.
Customer Reviews:
Phenomenal Book.......2005-01-19
Jonathan Potter's "Representing Reality" is a masterwork on the creation of 'facts' in social life. His work draws from and integrates several areas of related literature including discursive social psychology, rhetoric, discourse analysis, sociology, and ethnomethodology. I was particularly interested in how Potter showed that different assertions of what reality 'is' are often voiced in a competitive, contested climate and how those asserted realities implicitly are created to forestall challenges from other versions of 'what the facts are'. .
I would recommend that readers interested in this area also examine (1) John Searle's (1995) book "The construction of social reality", (2)Stephen Toulmin's work on data, warrants, and claims, and (3) Bernard Guerin's paper in the _Review of General Psychology_ in 2003 ("Language Use as Social Strategy: A Review and an Analytic Framework for the Social Sciences") that features an interesting take on creating and disputing 'readings' or 'versions' of reality based on what are proposed as 'factual data'. These are, of course, recommended in addition to Berger and Luckmann's (1967) seminal book on the social construction of reality in everyday life.
Potter's book is truly a remarkable work. ANY person interested in how different versions of reality are socially constructed should get this book.
An insightful contribution by a leading discourse analyst.......1997-04-24
This is one of my all-time favorite discourse analytic books. Jonathan Potter, a professor in the U.K., illustrates how rhetoric and discourse analysis can come together in provocative ways. The initial two or three chapters are, in my opinion, a bit tedious in their set-up of later chapters, but the analytic sections in the latter half of the book have no equal in this area. Potter's writing is fun to read, and the examples he uses are sometimes humorous. Fans of Potter's other work will not be disappointed
Customer Reviews:
A Truly Useless Book.......2006-01-26
About 3 minutes of information stretched into 18 half empty, double spaced pages dedicated to the author's examination of the notorious Martingale/Double Up betting system, and a couple of variants.
Nothing about Blackjack and nothing about "Determining the Winning Ability of Your Betting System" as the title states. The author seems to think he alone has discovered the amazing fact that this basic progressive betting strategy can actually be analyzed mathematically - and that by employing his brilliant insight, he has uncovered a secret that has evaded all gamblers until now - This is the astounding fact that if you double your bet each time you loose, that after 7 losses you will hit the typical house betting limit (100 times the minimum bet) and "have the Big Loss".
Here are a few typical quotes from this book:
"The first surprise is that a betting system can be mathematically analyzed" [Duh].
"This vision has never before been published and... others do not know it exists for it is the author who developed it!". [alrighty then]
"Money Management is a... somewhat fuzzy subject. This author will not attempt to clear that fuziness." [or anything else for that matter]
And he states at the conclusion of his "Ideal Strategy"...
"During a session one can be dollars ahead so quit before the big loss arrives which it certainly will if you keep playing!"
In fact, save yourself a few more dollars and Don't Buy This Book!

Anyone who's done programming work knows that you spend half your coding time looking for other people's solutions to the problems you're facing in your project. Particularly when you're dealing with times, dates, standard calculations, and other common problems, you find yourself saying, "Someone must have solved this before." And, indeed, someone usually has. Linux Programming by Example is a dense compendium of Linux software solutions--tools, algorithms, and procedures that solve data-processing challenges of the sort that crop up in all sorts of software projects. Though it does not address X11 user-interface programming or network communications much, this book does a great job of communicating recommended practices for command-line interfaces, filesystem manipulation, internationalization and localization, and inter-process communications. Taken together with The Art of Unix Programming, this book will help you solve difficult Linux programming problems quickly.
Unlike a lot of code-oriented books, this one manages to keep its samples concise, and devote more space to discussions of why things are done than to the code that actually does them. This promotes understanding: You can always mess around with the code yourself on your own. Overall, Arnold Robbins does an excellent job of stripping away some of the hacker mystique to reveal the code behind the curtain. This book shows how to work Linux magic. --David Wall
Topics covered: Linux programming in C, mostly at a level concerned with user input from the command line, file I/O, interprocess signalling, and memory management.
Customer Reviews:
Good Introduction.......2007-01-07
This is a good introductory book for Linux OS related programming concepts including memory management, files, IPC, signals and debugging. It does explain the concepts quite well and the code illustrations are very helpful. Its debugging and internalization chapters are noteworthy. As mentioned by others, this book does not cover threads and sockets.
It could be better to provide more complete coverage of the topics such as IPC and memory management. For example, the IPC chapter is limited to pipes and fifos (they are not even explained depth enough).
In short, I strongly recommend it as an introductory book for the topics covered.
Quality book, a keeper.......2006-03-20
I learned about this book from its sister book, Linux Kernel Primer: A Top-Down Approach for x86 and PowerPC Architecture. While the kernel book is not a good one at all, this one is a true gem. The writing is clear, lucid, and the examples are from the real world and thoroughly explained. In contrast, the kernel book gives overly broad and general introduction to a subject and then dives into the source code with disconnected commenting; there is such a big gap between the intro and the source code that it's not readable at all.
The auther Arnold Robinns also wrote a few other great books, including Learning the vi Editor and Learning the Korn Shell. With the achievement of this book, he ranks near the great, late Richard Stevens in terms of writing quality.
Great real world examples.......2005-01-25
Linux Programming by Example: The Fundamentals is a great book that covers three main concepts in Linux programming: files, processes and debugging. In each part the author explains and gives several examples of functions, systems calls and APIs that will help the Linux programmer. He also includes several real world examples of how these concepts are implemented. Here are the some things that I found interesting:
The Good: 1) This book really focuses on the use of standards and good program design. Right from the beginning, the author goes out of his way to make the reader aware of standards from ISO and POSIX and how they apply to good programming and design. Along this line I also like that the author explains the benefits of - and promotes - the use of Gnu software. Being an avid Gnu user myself (as most Linux users are) I agree that Gnu software is generally better software.
2) I feel that knowledge is power, and the author goes along with this idea by showing how some things should *not* be done. He often points out several functions that are available but should be avoided. I appreciated this, and feel that it makes the reader an all-around better programmer. The author also frequently gives extra information and history which helps explain why things are the way they are. This was especially useful when explaining mount points and types of file system.
3) I liked the fact that the author uses real world examples to demonstrate the ideas being presented. I really appreciated the fact that he uses V7 code (older, smaller and less comlex code) to demonstrate his examples. This allowed me to be able to see how the features were implemented in simple code, without being overwhelmed by the modern equivalents. A great example is the V7 echo program - only 23 lines!
The Bad: There weren't too many things that I didn't like about this book, but if my arm was twisted I would say the following: 1) This book is called *Linux* Programming but really it is about Unix programming. I know they are similar, and maybe I am splitting hairs here, but the title could really be *Unix* Programming. Most of this stuff is generic Unix programming, and the author points out the special exceptions not only for Linux but for other Unix variants as well - such as BSD.
2) Don't confuse the word "Fundamental" with "Beginning." This book really isn't for beginning Linux programmers, but rather it teaches basic (or fundamental) concepts that Linux programmers should know and use. The reader needs to be moderately familiar with the C programming language if he or she is to be edified.
A great read, with some excellent examples of well written Linux programs. If you are interested in moving beyond basic Linux programming then you should definitely pick up a copy of this book!
An invaluable resource.......2005-01-06
This is an exceptionally fine book.
Robbins has supplied the reader with a vast number of
programs and a lot of elucidation. This is a primer in
Linux programming, but also serves as a tract on UNIX
programming. The illustrations stem, for the most part,
from actual GNU and Linux code.
This is an invaluable resource for those converting from
another system to Linux.
A new classic.......2004-07-13
I loved this book. It's earned an honored place on my bookshelf, and I'm going to recommend it to people who need information about Linux and UNIX development.
Many computer books are practically obsolete before they ship: within a few months, "Learn Foomatic 4.3 in 21 Days" is in the bargain bin at the Dollar Tree. Some books have longer lives, and a few can remain useful for years. "Linux Programming by Example" (LPE) is in this last category; this book can stand alongside Steven's "Advanced UNIX Programming" as an essential tutorial and reference.
LPE covers everything you'd expect (working with files, processes, signals, users) and some things you might not (internationalization). But it's this book's voice and unique perspective that make it truly a gem. LPE is written in a clear, friendly, authoritative style. As I read, I often felt that I had gained a new understanding of things I've known for years.
The long and twisted history of UNIX has given rise to multiple competing APIs. Perhaps the greatest thing about this book is the way that Robbins cuts through these thickets, explaining your choices, pointing out the best alternatives, and explaining why they're the best. LPE's modern vantage point means it can cover V7, BSD, POSIX, and GNU APIs. The chapter on signals alone is worth the purchase price of the book for the way in which it clearly compares and contrasts the various signal APIs.
