not about writing your will.......2001-04-09
I bought the wrong book, so just to let you know: this is not about making those decisions about what to put in your last will and testament. Unless you want to give to charity,of course, this book is about philanthropy.
CHARITY 101.......2000-12-24
Are you constantly receiving requests for donations? Are you in a quandry about giving? How does one know which causes are worth supporting? Do you find it difficult to decide who is and is not deserving? "The Ethics of Giving and Receiving", is somewhat like a crash course in charity and benevolence 101, in that it explores how to do good wisely. You may or may not agree with the stated assertions, but you will find them interesting. For example, - philanthropy should be linked with justice which creates standards for wise giving; those responsible for their own misfortune should be sent to the end of the receiving donations line. On the other hand, empathy and compassion is needed to guard against being too strict and too judgemental. Join the debate, read the book. It was written for an audience of intelligent inquirers. That's you!

Book Description
A survey of the development of the automobile industry from its origins to the present in a perspective informed by current upheavals in markets, technology and work organization. The volume examines the international diffusion of the Fordist model, Fordism being the manufacture of standardized products using special-purpose machinery and unskilled labour. The book goes on to consider how far the recent changes in the industry mark a break with Fordism and draws on the implications for industrial relations and trade union strategy.

Customer Reviews:
SO very, very very bad.......2007-01-23
This should be a lesson to everyone about how not to write a book. Mr. Falanga is pompous, idiotic, and mysogynistic. But worse than anything else, he is not funny(He certainly thinks he is though)!
If you took away all of Seinfeld's wit and instead gave him a loaded sense of self importance, and then, in addition, had him brag about his amazing life for any number of innumerable pages you would have this book. If you like that, give the book a try.
Seriously...I want the four hours of my life back.
Not like real life in the Chicago suburbs!.......2005-08-30
I usually read, not write, reviews, on amazon.com., but this book was so bad I felt compelled to warn others: don't waste the time, or money on this book! The author comes across as a self-important boor, and his wife as a self-centered shrew. How the author could claim to love his wife, and write about her in a poor light, is beyond me. And I'm embarassed to have people who live elsewhere to get the impression that this is what life is like in the suburbs of Chicago - we're not nearly so shallow. I can only assume that the positive reviewers were friends of the author.
This is the worst book I have ever read!.......2005-03-30
Honestly, this is the first book that was so bad, I couldn't finish it. I thought the concept was clever, but the stories told by the author (using an irritating second person "you" throughout the book)are boring and not funny. The author tells us this book is hilarious, but he is sadly mistaken. The stories are uninteresting, haphazard, and don't really capture the true essence of suburbia. The author brags about all the money he has and lives in a world that is not reflective of the majority of the suburbs. For example, he talks about how Halloween has changed since he was a kid. He says now Halloween parties, catered and served by butlers in tuxes, have replaced kids trick-or-treating in the neighborhood. What? I think in 99% of the suburbs, kids still dress up and trick-or-treat door-to-door. Most of his stories reflect this thinking in his irritating, ego boosting, bragging banter. I never take the time to write reviews, but this book was so bad I felt I needed to warn people. Try buying a book by Dave Barry. He is really a funny author who won't tell you how funny he is!
very even, interesting, not bad, not great.......2004-12-21
this is a good solid bunch of essays about moving to and living in suburbia. nothing all that hilarious, really, but it wasn't dreadful or boring. it was non-threatening, clean humor. it almsot reminded me of something you would find in a reader's digest, or on a spot on NPR. even though i don't live in suburbia, i can appreicate the humor in each situation, but there wasn't anything drop dead hilarious. it is a quick read, great for a pallate cleanser between books. it's a book you can put down and pick up a few days later without feeling like you ruined the flow.
Ick! Please do not give Mark Falanga any of your money!.......2004-11-28
Please do not buy this book. The author is a smug, self-important guy who thinks he is funny. As a recent transplant from Chicago to a northern suburb, I looked forward to this book and was so diappointed. The stories hardly have to do with living in the suburbs (deciding on a religion for you kids?!, fighting for a parking space at the gym?). Please..... This is an insulting piece of dribble from a man who wants to weave into his story how much money he makes, what kind of cars he drives, and how hot his wife is. Don't waste your time.
Book Description
41 of the Russian master's greatest works for solo piano, including the immensely popular C-sharp minor, G-minor, and B-minor Preludes, in authoritative editions.
Customer Reviews:
Ravishing Rakhmáñinov for solo-piano: difficult but very rewarding music beautifully reprinted!!.......2007-02-17
All pianists as well as Rakhmáñinov-lovers ought to have this score in their possession: a steal with excellent reprinting and good size of print (perhaps it could have been a little larger, but it's good enough nevertheless!) - and certainly less expensive than the original printing of Boosey & Hawkes! Get it!!!
Complete Preludes and Etudes-Tableaux.......2006-03-04
I purchased this for my son. He is enjoying thoroughly. Shipping was excellent. It was great to be able to track the item and know when it arrived. Thank you.
Great music, accurate edition, great price........2005-12-01
This book has given me countless evenings of entertainment. Rachmaninoff's preludes and etudes offer a very wide variety of styles and colors over a wide range of difficulty. Intermediate piano students will benefit greatly from learning some of the less challenging preludes and etudes, as these pieces prove indispensable ways to develop a good singing tone and a good ear for bringing out different voices and paying attention to counterpoint.
More importantly, the pieces themselves stand as a testament to Rachmaninoff's compositional creativity and mastery, and are simply a pleasure to play and to listen to.
I found the editing and printing to be quite satisfactory, and Dover's price makes this an essential purchase for anyone seriously studing the art of piano.
Couldn't be better!.......2001-08-03
If you want a book that has all of Rachmaninoff's preludes and etudes-tableaux in one attractive edition, this is the book for you. This is a must-have for any Rachmaninoff lover!
good for the price.......2000-10-24
For the price, this is a good book. But I found the print a little bit light. So if your eyes aren't that great anymore, be aware.

Book Description
Arrested for possession of drugs with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards in the infamous 1967 Redlands bust, Robert Fraser embodied many of the elements that made up Swinging London in the 1960s: pop music, fashion, drugs, art, and cinema. A trendsetter, hedonist, and lousy businessman, he was also the visionary art dealer responsible for introducing Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, and Jim Dine to the London art world. But by the time of his death in 1986 he had become an almost forgotten figure, his sixties vision out of tune with the conservatism of the eighties. In this biography, told through the voices of those who knew Fraser best -- Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Marianne Faithfull, Kenneth Anger, Dennis Hopper, and many others -- Harriet Vyner has resurrected an extraordinary cultural figure.

Book Description
This guide to computer typesetting using TeX is written by Donald Knuth, the system's creator. TeX offers both writers and publishers the ability to produce plain or technical text, especially text containing a great deal of mathematics, comparable to the work of the finest printers. Novice and expert alike will find The TeXbook useful; it is accessible to the beginner, and also contains the details required by experienced users.
Customer Reviews:
not for beginners, but complete and useful.......2006-07-06
If you really want to know TeX, this is the book to have. However, if you are a complete beginner, I'd recommend you first look at Michael Doob's A Gentle Introduction to Tex. It will get you off to a running start and prepare you to profitably read Knuth's book.
If you are fairly sophisticated, you can learn TeX from scratch reading this book. I managed this, whilst at the same time mastering the vagaries of UNIX running on a vax and taking the (old version) of the vi bull by the horns. It was difficult. But you won't likely be facing the daunting technological obstacles I described today.
Dump that hapless Word equation editor and become a TeXpert. Happy TeXing!
Surprisingly readable.......2005-06-29
I'm feeling kind of stupid that I spent time reading other books about TeX. I assumed that this one would be incomprehensible, but nothing is further from the truth. It's readable, yet precise. The exercises are helpful. The jokes really are funny, and not distracting. It's amazing that computer science's most brilliant mind is also it's most brilliant writer (that I have run across, anyway).
I agree with the one reviewer that the organzation is imperfect. But, I can't say I've found a book about TeX that does a better job.
Detailed, but poorly organized.......2002-08-20
While this book is fairly detailed, and covers the method TeX processes lines completely, it is for the most part poorly organized. It seems to be intended more as a tutorial than as a reference.
The more advanced methods are interspersed in an almost haphazard way with the beginning techniques. Simple typesetting problems like creating multiple columns, changing margins, and using a different font size are covered very obliquely, and it takes multiple readings to figure out how to do such things.
However, the section on creating mathematical equations is very well done, and I was soon able to master very complicated formatting. The book also talks about "proper" typesetting--the three different dashes and when to use them, the difference between spacing after an abreviation and a sentence-ending period, etc. I only wish Knuth had included all those great tidbits in a table somewhere--sometimes it can take quite a long time to hunt down the information.
TeX is a wonderful typestting language that is great for anything from math reports to psychology research papers, to book typesetting. Unfortunately this book does a poor job of explaining the language, and is not a good reference for someone who is familiar with it.
Brilliant, but weak as a reference.......2002-06-02
I bought the TeXbook two years ago, but finally spent a few days reading it cover to cover -- and I am impressed. As many others, I started exploring plain TeX because I wanted more from LaTeX. I was surprised to find how simple and, yes, *elegant* TeX is in comparison. I guess TeX is to LaTeX as C is to C++. Certainly do not buy this book if you just want to use LaTeX!
The writing is superb, full of fine detail and more than a few clever jokes. Why can't recent books about modern systems be so delightful? Maybe David Pogue's Missing Manual series comes close, but the topics are not quite as technical.
As a reference, the TeXbook is weak because each command or concept is scattered across so many places: one introductory chapter, one summary chapter, in exercises, in "dangerous bend" passages, and so on. I believe the book is best organized for front to back reading, although probably in two or three passes if you include the dangerous bends. For reference, I prefer TeX by Topic by Victor Eijkhout. It is out of print, but available for download on his web site.
The paperback edition of the TeXbook is spiral bound. I appreciate that it lays flat, but the back pages are always falling out of the binding!
Aaack! run away, newbies!.......2001-02-04
For someone who wishes to make TeX a way of life, ok, this book is probably great. But if you are trying to learn LaTeX so you can typeset a doc the way everyone else does it, check out Lamport's book on LaTeX, and also Goossens. This book is written like a textbook, bringing up everything and never getting to "So you want to do this? Ok, here's how." F'get about it!
Book Description
Puntos de partida boasts a well-deserved reputation as a beginning Spanish book that is consistently reliable. When instructors need a book that won't let them down, this is the text they turn to. The chapter structure is straightforward, consistent, and reflects what instructors actually do in class. The grammar explanations are written in plain English, are easy for students to understand, and contain plenty of examples. The exercises and activities are varied and plentiful, do not require deciphering, and can be counted on to work. The superb supplements package is painstakingly coordinated with the student text, and includes an Instructor's Manual that is a lifesaver to any teacher, especially those with little experience. Puntos de partida fifth edition offers a variety of new features, all sure to please but also sure to work. A new audiotape accompanies the student text, providing listening practice. Several chapters explore new themes, such as pop culture and art. A new culture feature called En los Estados Unidos... focuses on U.S. Hispanics. A beautiful new design makes the text clearer, more attractive, and easier to use. Over half the readings are new to this edition and longer readings are broken into manageable chunks. Finally, an exciting new video, rich in both language and culture, is integrated with the text and incorporated into a new multimedia CD-ROM.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive.......2003-12-09
This is the most comprehensive foreign language book I've seen. It's simple, a 6th grader could teach themselves Spanish with this book. Open it, read it, and memorize it. I had a terrible time with French and was not looking foward to learning Spanish, but I picked it up immediately as I went along with this book. When the semester was over, I spent the summer reading the rest of it at my leisure. As far as the other reviews go, I'm not sure what the problem was. It couldn't be explained any more clearly, perhaps they are moving too fast? Take a day for each page or something, whatever works. If you're not picking it up, it may be your study techniques and not the book. If you want extra practice, get the workbook. Both the workbook and the textbook have the answers to every practice exercise (of which there are an adequate amount) in the back of the book. Maybe the previous reviewers were unaware?
Excellent Text.......2003-07-05
Contrary to other reviews I find this textbook excellent. The chapters lead the student to learn Spanish with a minimal effort at a natural, comfortable pace. Recommended for beginners!
If you are trying to teach yourself ...........2003-02-26
then this book is NOT for you. I tried to teach myself Spanish (I didn't know any) and this book just did not work out because of its poor construction. The concepts are not clearly described and all too often I found myself asking why is this grammar like this or what is the difference between the different tenses. The examples are not very helpful either.
However, I took a private introductory class and then returned to this book. Here, the book has provided some value with its vocabulary which is grouped by themes (festivals, family, etc). So the book has some value for a beginner if you are also receiving extensive instruction from another source.
A poor excuse for a learning tool........2002-12-30
This book is touted as a beginners volume yet it fails to perform as specified. The contents are poorly written and few examples are given to help in the learning process. To further complicate the learning of a new language, Puntos de partida provides very little explanations and direction to ensure sufficient comprehension and understanding of the Spanish language. Unfortunantly, this review can speak for most Spanish text books on the market as my Universities Spanish program has realized. Puntos de partida will not help the beginner to learn Spanish. It will deter the beginner to seek further understanding and learning of the Spanish language. This is unfortunate.
boring.......1999-12-02
Could use some deals of interest in writing this book. Very boring and put's you to sleep
Book Description
Why is TeX so hard to use? Because it is in essence a programming language and so it is best viewed from this perspective. In this book, the author presents a complete course in TeX which will be suitable for users of TeX who want to advance beyond the basics. The initial chapters introduce the essential workings of TeX, including a detailed discussion of boxes and glue. Later chapters cover a wide range of advanced topics such as: macros, conditionals, tokens, leaders, file I/O, the line- and page-break algorithms, and output routines. Throughout, numerous examples are given and exercises (with answers) provide a means for readers to test their understanding of the material. As a result, no serious user of TeX will want to be without this text.
Customer Reviews:
A very good book.......1999-06-17
I read the book and loved it, I am a regular Word User who is not happy with word... sure I can figure out right from the first session what to to with it, but when I get around to what I really wanna do, not just simple functions like changing fonts, I am lost for .... lets call it words. TeX however allows much more. But it suffers from the common plague of people trying to make it wordlike simple. These people do TeX a great disservice, because its true power lies in its complexity, and its flexibility, this book is distinguishibale in that it never takes anything for granted, and explains the printing and formatting process from scratch, in fact its the one true good book of TeX or LaTeX I have seen in the entire long quest of mine for that true book.
The one thing that is wrong with it... is that its VERY VERY expensive, it is worth the price, but still I am under the opinion the author or the publisher, could have realised what a treasure this book is an released it in a more affordable price or version... even if it ment lesser quality paper.
But it is a GREAT BOOK!
