4 out of 5 stars It would be a great addition to interactive tests CDL COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE MANUAL.......2007-05-21

It is a great book that covers many areas of CDL secrets. However, to pass the test you need more. The interactive tests CDL COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE MANUAL offered by AplusB Software Corporation on Amazon, would be a perfect addition to this book. The information presented visually is received and processed by the brain faster than only a written message. People think much faster than they can read, so their minds tend to wander during a reading. The CDL COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE MANUAL, visualised software application helps keep you focused on the information.

2 out of 5 stars Combination Vehicles.......2006-04-08

This book combines Combination Vehicles with Doubles and Triples. They are seperate test. The book does not go into the Trailer Hand Valve (trolley valve, johnson bar); Tractor Protection Valve; Trailer Air Supply Control, which are all required reading for the Combination Vehicle test. Beware if you are taking the CDL in the state of Texas the book does not cover Special Requirements for Texas Commercial Motor Vehicles. That is 16 pages of missing information that you need to know.

4 out of 5 stars Good for Spanish Translation of English Truck Terms.......2006-03-16

I bought this book for my spanish CDL students whose english is limited. I felt it was a good companion to the english CDL study guide. It was helpful for translation of truck part terms that you cannot find in an english/spanish dictionary. I also bought the spanish video that goes with the book and found that useful and informational as well. I would recommend the book and video as a supplement to the english CDL study guide and videos when studying for the CDL permit tests. The only downfall is that if the instructor does not speak english and spanish this may be a problem as the instructor needs to understand both languages to correctly translate the book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, includes info needed for CDL exam, and industry........2003-03-18

I purchased this book b/c I am looking to get into the trucking industry. After I received this book, I was pleased. This book is well-layed out and describes all aspects of the trucking industry and CDL requirements. Each chapter is followed by a series of questions and the authors give tips throughout the book for passing CDL exams. Includes all endorsements, and the book was published in 2001, so you know it is not out-dated. Overall, I am satisfied with the contents and hope to get into the industry.

          Book Description

Do you wonder what your cat is thinking while stalking the tablecloth fringe or racing through the living room on clearly important but ultimately mysterious business? As a mere human being, or “Lap” as they call our kind, you might never guess the complexities of the feline mind. But fear not, dear reader, you are about to be taken into the confidence of a cat.

          The Door
“When we are inside the house we are often thinking of the outside, of how many cats may be walking through our yard, sitting on our fences, leaving scentmarkings for us to find. So we go to the door and wait at the door and wonder, again, what on earth is the purpose of the door.”

          A Paper Bag
“We have spent many hours attempting to discover the secrets of the paper bag, to no avail. Even when we surprise it, leaping from a high place, the paper bag acts exactly the same way, and we find no creature inside. How does that work? By what physical laws does it operate? It is a mystery. And we do love a good mystery. Just not at our expense.”

          In the Sink
“We do not understand or appreciate your fascination with our occupation of the sink portion of the household. The reasons we are here, in the sink—despite the risk of wetness—are obvious, are they not? The sink is cooler than most places in the house. The coolness from the sink surrounds us as no other coolness can surround us. If there was a sink Out of Doors, that would be one less reason for us to come home at night. But there isn’t a sink Out of Doors. So here we are. In the sink. Trying to sleep. Just a nap, you know.”

Hilarious and clever, silly yet profound, We Are the Cat brings you into the inner life of cats, revealing the many joys hidden in a piece of string, the deliciousness of sleeping in a sink or in the sunshine, the endless mystery of what is on the other side of the door, and what our cats really see as they observe us from their perches.

A NOTE FROM AUTHOR TERRY BAIN’S CAT

          Dear Reader,

When we first heard that the “author” of this book—or, as we sometimes refer to him, Scratch—was writing about us, we were nonplussed. But then we gave it some thought. Some timely and careful consideration. And we have come to the following conclusion: We are not inclined to allow him to write a book about us. We have been watching him, and reading what he’s written so far—the book about dogs and such, with references to us scattered about—and we do not entirely approve. (We also would ask why on earth he would choose to write about dogs before writing about cats. This we feel speaks directly to his character, and we therefore must assume that he is more seriously flawed than we previously thought. So, no, he should not write this book.)

It isn’t that we don’t agree with much of what he has written about dogs (though what we have read makes little sense to us. We understand “reading,” and “language,” but the sense it makes is much like dogs themselves—that is, not much sense at all). We would hope that should he write a book about us that we will not be made the butt of his jokes. We are in favor of people knowing us better so as to leave us alone more often (when we want to be left alone), or to appreciate us as they should (when we want to be appreciated). But we are not in favor of a book that does not take us seriously, or that paints a picture of us that is untoward, or that is otherwise not written by a cat. He is not a cat and therefore should not be allowed to write such a book, no matter how seriously he writes about us, no matter how catlike he seems to be at times (or doglike, as it were, which we think should disqualify him altogether). We do not wish him to speak for us. We will speak for ourselves.

          Kind regards,
          Swiper

This book is WONDERFUL. Scratch (I will use his cat-given name) is a fabulous writer who strikes the exactly correct tone. Anyone who has ever lived with a cat will enjoy this book. I have read many cat behavior books, many books on cats biology and genetics, as well as some sentimental memoirs about life with cats. This book, however, encapsulates just about everything with wit and joy.

            Book Description

Supported by strong ratings and a rich history, The Real Deadwood provides background and historical accuracy for the figures depicted on the hit HBO series, and takes a broader look at the times that spawned them. Covering law and order, politics, journalism, and early medicine, and examining some "historical guest stars" who may play a factor in future Deadwood episodes (Teddy Roosevelt was an acquaintance of series protagonist Seth Bullock and made several visits to the lawless town; Bullock turned away Wyatt Earp when he offered his services as a lawman)-The Real Deadwood will allow readers to traverse the unpaved streets of an outlaw town without ever getting their boots dirty.

1 out of 5 stars At best, it is a poorly written high school term paper........2007-05-31

One person reviewing this book wrote that if you're a fan of the Deadwood television series, you should avoid this book. Let me go a little bit further. If you've got any sense at all, avoid this book. It's easily the fluffiest 128 page book you're likely to read this year (or next). The content in the book could fit in a high school student's term paper, and I suspect that is actually how the book may have originated.

It's filled with lots of information that seemed lifted from various web sites I've seen, although I suppose that it is possible that various web sites may have lifted their content from this book, although why anyone would do this, I can't begin to contemplate.

To be perfectly clear, avoid this book. It is a clear attempt to cash in on the popular Deadwood TV series. (The series started in March 2004. This book came out in August 2004.) Go to your local Borders or Barnes and Nobel to glance at a copy before you decide to buy it.

If you are a fan of the TV series, "Deadwood: Stories of the Black Hills" is a far better choice.

If you are into getting down as close as you can to the real history of the town and it's periods of boom and bust, then I highly recommend you consider, "Deadwood: The Golden Years." (Published in 1981, 23 years before the TV show.)

            2 out of 5 stars Disappointing........2006-11-10

The book references the tv show "Deadwood" much too often. I didn't know if I was reading about the "real" Deadwood or the tv version. I was very disappointed.

            4 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-11-10

The book give more insight to the tv show Dead wood....I wish they would not have canceled it....Any way I enjoyed the book quite a bit..and found the grave of one of them...here in St Louis....

            2 out of 5 stars Deadwood Lite.......2006-03-01

If you're looking for a fast, easy read about Deadwood with little detail, insight, or depth, this is the book for you. The book offers nothing new or interesting for those of us already familiar with Deadwood's history.

I also consider the strong tie in to the HBO series (which is, by the way, my favorite show) generally ill advised. The positive aspect of doing so is the author makes it clear early in the book that the series is not completely factual, the writers, producers, etc. do not intend for the show to be completely factual, and the book addresses some of these characters, events, situations presented in the series, and "corrects" the facts. Unfortunately, in a few cases, the author discusses fictional characters/situations from the series, it's important to understand the context and details of the reference, the context and details are not included in the book, so only readers who've watched the series would understand the references. I'm sure there are a lot of people interested in Deadwood and it's history who haven't watched or have no interest in the series. Overall, I found the constant references to the series annoying. I love the series, I wanted to learn more about the real Deadwood, I didn't want to read about the series, I didn't get what I wanted or thought I'd get from this book.

2 out of 5 stars Please, do not wast your time........2006-01-27

This was a very quick read, and not a very detailed book. I would wish the book to go into more detail, and not have so many references to "Deadwood" the HBO show. If I wanted to know all that, I would watch the show.
I would not recomend buying this book. It does not go into detail at all, is very basic, and leaves you hanging.
Once you find a part that actually interest you, it comes to an abrupt end and seems like some of the pages detailing the story fell out.

            Book Description

This book gives you just what you need to know to set up and maintain an email server. It covers setting up the server and the mailserver, as well as extras such as spam and virus protection, and web based email. Written by professional Linux administrators the book is aimed at technically confident users and new and part-time system administrators. The emphasis is on simple, practical and reliable guidance. Many businesses want to run their email servers on Linux, but getting started can be complicated. The attractiveness of a free-to-use and robust email service running on Linux can be undermined by the apparent technical challenges involved. Some of the complexity arises from the fact that an email server consists of several components that must be installed and configured separately, then integrated together. Unlike other approaches that deal with one component at a time, this book gives you a basic knowledge across all the server components, leaving you with a complete working email server for your small business network. Based entirely on free, Open Source software, you will see how to protect your server from spam and viruses, offer web access for remote access, and secure your installation with regular backups.

4 out of 5 stars Linux Email Server.......2007-01-09

Running a Linux email server is a non-trivial task. This book does a better job of explaining the major software components than most things I've found but there were a couple of things about it that I found could use a little improvement.

First, the book could use more discussion about issues external to the core pieces of software. Some discussion of configuring MX records, router ports that need to be opened, etc. would be in order.

Second, there were areas, especially in the "securing your installation" section where it wasn't obvious on the first reading that several options were being discussed and you should choose one that was appropriate for your system. A bit of clarification might be in order but the information you need is all there.

Last, I'd like to have seen one or two complete examples. A simple, bare bones one and a complete "all the bells and whistles" version would be ideal.

In general this book is the best I've found for someone who's never set up an email system before. Using it I was able to set up a basic functioning system.

3 out of 5 stars Lacking complete instructions for setting up virtual mail hosting........2006-11-27

The book does a fine job of giving an overview of the suite of mail servers. The setup steps are introduced from easiest (basic) to more complex (enhanced), allowing the reading to incrementally set up their environment. This is important in that it provides milestones where testing can take place before enhancements are introduced.

I knocked off two stars because the authors failed to give clear instructions for setting up virtual users in Postfix and Courier-IMAP's POP3 and IMAP service. I had to search the web for this information. Virtual users are critical for a modern day email system, and the failure to flesh-out a virtual-user capable system is a major short-coming.

4 out of 5 stars Not For New System Admins.......2006-08-15

I actually got myself in quite a pickle at work introducing them to linux. Immediately they wanted it on our network starting with an email server. First of all, I am a programmer, not a system admin. Second, I use linux on a daily basis at work and home but not for servers. Desperately, I reached for this book for help. Bad idea at the beginning at least. The book's way of going through setting up postfix at the beginning was no help for me and my novice knowledge with servers. I ended up getting everything setup thanks to google and wikipedia howtos. Later I blew dust off this book and picked it up for another go. Now that I understand the basics I am at a comfort level with this book, but still have struggles here and there. This book, however, definitely helped me with setting up squirrelmail and spamassassin. Definitely recommend this book to somebody with a basic understanding of linux and some-what of an understanding of servers.
